Illinois police officer charged with possessing child pornography

SALEM, Wis. — An Illinois police officer residing in Wisconsin was charged Thursday with 10 counts of possessing child pornography.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force led the investigation. The following agencies provided valuable assistance: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI); the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office; Ontario Provincial Police; Tower Lakes Police Department (Illinois); Prairie Grove Police Department (Illinois); and, Lake County Sheriff’s Office (Illinois).

On May 27, 2020, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Mark A. Paglini residence in Salem, Wisconsin.

Paglini was later arrested and booked in the Kenosha County Jail.

As in any criminal proceeding, Paglini is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This is an ongoing investigation; anyone with information is encouraged to call the HSI Tip Line at 1-866-DHS-2-ICE.

This investigation was conducted under HSI’s Operation Predator, an international initiative to protect children from sexual predators. Since the launch of Operation Predator in 2003, HSI has arrested more than 25,000 individuals for crimes against children, including the production and distribution of online child exploitation material, traveling overseas for sex with minors, and sex trafficking of children. In fiscal year 2019, more than 3,500 child predators were arrested by HSI special agents under this initiative and more than 1,000 victims identified or rescued.

HSI encourages the public to report suspected child predators and any suspicious activity through its toll-free Tip Line at 1-866-DHS-2-ICE or by completing its online tip form. Both are staffed around the clock by investigators. From outside the U.S. and Canada, callers should dial 802-872-6199. Hearing impaired users can call TTY 802-872-6196.

Klobuchar: ‘It Is a Lie’ I Declined to Prosecute Police Officer Involved in Floyd Death

Friday on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) said it was “a lie” that as the chief legal officer of Hennepin County, MN she declined to charge Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for his role in the shooting death of Wayne Reyes in October 2006.

Chauvin is the police officer seen on video with his knee on George Floyd’s neck for several minutes.

Klobuchar said, “Honestly, yesterday, when these reports came out about this officer, I was with our community, and my number one focus was the city that was burning. And now I have this opportunity to address this. Let me start with the specific case. This idea that I somehow declined a case which has been reported on some news blogs and then sent out on the internet against this officer is absolutely false. It is a lie. I don’t know what else to say about it than it is a lie.”

She continued, “The case was investigated. That investigation continued into a time where I was already sworn I the U.S. Senate. I never declined the case. It was handled and sent to the grand jury. My successor’s office said it was not my place to make decisions because the decision was made when I was in the U.S. Senate. In fact, nine months after I was in the Senate is when it went to the grand jury.”

She added, “Now let me address the bigger issue. I have said repeatedly back when I was the county attorney, cases we had involved with officer-involved shootings went to grand jury. That was true across our state and many jurisdictions across the country. I think that was wrong now. I think it would have been much better if I took the responsibility and looked at the cases and made the decision myself. But let me make this clear, we did not blow off these cases. We brought them to a grand jury, presented the evidence for a potential criminal prosecution, and the grand jury would come back with the decision. That is how we handled the cases. That aside, I want to move forward. And I think the best way we move forward is, one, prosecutors taking responsibility themselves.”

'They Broke Their Word': Trump Says Hong Kong No Longer Autonomous From China

During a Friday press conference at the White House, US President Donald Trump declared that "Hong Kong is no sufficiently autonomous to warrant the special treatment that we have afforded the territory" and is therefore subject to a number of restrictions.

"We will be revising the State Department’s travel advisory for Hong Kong to reflect the increased danger of surveillance and punishment by the Chinese state security apparatus," Trump noted.

The US president's comments concerning Hong Kong come just a day after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made a similar assertion to Congress.

Pompeo argued that "Hong Kong does not continue to warrant treatment under United States laws in the same manner as US laws were applied to Hong Kong before July 1997."

This position follows the Chinese parliament's passing of a resolution to draft a security law that would prohibit secessionism in Hong Kong.

Fed Tapers Daily Treasury Purchases To Just $4.5 Billion Per Day

From an initial $75 billion per day when the Fed announced the launch of Unlimited QE in mid-March, the US central bank first reduced its daily buying to $60 billion per day, then announced a series of consecutive 'tapers' as follows:

$50 billion per day

$30 billion per day

$15 billion per day

$10 billion per day

$8 billion per day

$7 billion per day

$6 billion per day

Then, after again shrinking the average daily POMO to $5 billion last week, in its latest just published schedule, the Fed unveiled that in the coming week it would purchase "only" $4.5BN per day, or a total of $22.5BN for the week. The Fed is continuing the practice of incremental tapering, and providing a weekly preview of its purchasing operations, which in the coming week will amount to just $22.5BN in TSYs, up $2.5BN from the current week which however was one day short due to the Monday holiday.

Somewhat surprisingly, for the second week in a row the Fed decided not to taper its daily MBS buying, which will average $4.5 billion per day next week, the same as last week, and matches the buying of Treasuries for the :

Mon: $4.47BN vs no purchases on Monday's holiday

Tue: $4.545BN vs $4.23BN

Wed: $4.47BN vs $4.770BN

Thur: $4.4545BN vs $4.230BN

Fri: $4.47BN vs $4.770BN

Cap #2 summarizes all the Fed Treasury and MBS buying completed and scheduled since the relaunch of QE on March 13.

Cap #3 is the FRB's balance sheet.

In aggregate, the Fed will buy a total of $45 billion of TSYs/MBS next week and ever closer to spark concerns that the Fed is no longer monetizing all the Treasury issuance, of which there is and will be trillion in the coming quarters.

But not yet: once again there was no reaction in yields, with the 10Y trading at 0.66%, after the announcement, exactly where it was last week, and 2bps above where it was trading at exactly this time one week ago, and unchanged from 2 weeks ago.

In Russia collusion hoax, Rod Rosenstein must be held accountable for his flagrant misconduct

ormer Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is a master of prevarication and deflection. He holds an M.S. in BS and a Ph.D. in vacuous excuses. He’s a professor emeritus of duplicity and deception. As a prodigious suck-up, he’s the Eddie Haskell of lawyers.

We can expect Rosenstein’s skill set to be on full display Wednesday when he finally and belatedly appears before the Senate Judiciary Committee as its first witness in an investigation into the origins and evolution of the fallacious Trump-Russia collusion probe.

During his ignominious tenure at the Justice Department, Rosenstein was at the center of the Russia hoax, pulling the investigatory levers of manipulation over an imaginary collusion conspiracy that eventually went bust. But not before incalculable damage was done to the Trump presidency, government institutions, and America’s faith in our system of justice.

Before his departure from the Justice Department in May 2019, Rosenstein consistently spurned most attempts by Congress to explain his inexplicable actions and shady tactics. He was a profile in cowardice. Perhaps now he will be held to account. It won’t be easy.

Rosenstein holds an M.S. in BS and a Ph.D. in vacuous excuses.

When the truth is at issue, Rosenstein is as slippery as an eel. He’s deathly allergic to personal and professional responsibility. Everyone else is to blame. When in doubt, deny it ever happened. In Rosenstein’s orbit, integrity is a mythical platitude.

FBI Investigation Was Illegitimate

Rosenstein’s testimony comes at a critical juncture. Just recently, the FBI document that launched the Trump-Russia Witch Hunt was declassified and made public. The FBI Electronic Communication (EC) dated July 31, 2016, identifies not a single scrap of plausible evidence that justified the bureau’s investigation of the Trump campaign.

Under FBI regulations governing the opening of a formal probe, the agency is required to present specific articulable facts and credible evidence in support of a crime. None was stated in the EC. Hence, there was never a factual predicate nor a reasonable basis that warranted what then-FBI Director James Comey’s bureau was doing.

Moreover, there was no reliable intelligence information to merit a counterintelligence probe, which was a cleverly contrived cover for a criminal investigation.

Undeterred, then-FBI agent Peter Strzok engineered what can only be described as a “phantom” EC record to target the Trump campaign with a baseless investigation in search of a crime.
