Mainstream media figures adopt Trump’s narrative that House Judiciary Committee investigation into him is a “fishing expedition”

Mainstream media figures are discussing the House Judiciary Committee document requests – which the committee sent to 81 figures and entities connected to President Donald Trump and his administration – within the framework of the White House’s narrative that the move is a “fishing expedition.”

Here are some examples of mainstream media figures and outlets acting as stenographers for the Trump administration’s pushback to the investigation:

CNN political analyst (((David Gregory))) said of the various investigations of Trump, “I do think the president is potentially strengthened by all of this, by it being overly broad, by looking like Democrats are simply after the president.”

CNN political analyst (((Rachael Bade))) said on New Day, “This is so expansive and so broad that it just – it raises questions of what are they going to do, where are they going to go, and does this actually hurt their own investigation because they are asking for so much?”

CNN anchor (((Alisyn Camerota))) told Rep. Lou Correa (D-CA), who serves on the Judiciary Committee, that “the debate is oversight or overreach, and do you really need documents from 81 people and entities to get to the bottom of something?”

CNN anchor (((Erica Hill))) called some of the document requests “somewhat dramatic” and asked her guest, “Do they risk, perhaps, in some instances going too far on this?”

While discussing the document requests on MSNBC, Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski said, “There is a real, if you’re a Democrat, concern about overreach.”

MSNBC anchor (((Andrea Mitchell))) adopted the White House’s frame, asking Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) whether Democrats are “going too far? Are they getting into the realm where they’re going to give the president a lot of ammunition to play the victim?”

NBC and MSNBC Senior Politics Editor (((Beth Fouhy))) said, “I’m very puzzled by the politics of this,” adding, “We were assured when Democrats took the control of the House that they were not going to do a quote-unquote ‘fishing expedition’ to bring Trump down, that their investigations would be very targeted, very focused – they wanted to do the work of the American people. … I can understand the reason to go after 81 people from the legal perspective, I don’t see it from the political perspective; this looks like it’s a fishing expedition. It’s certainly something that Fox News and the president’s supporters can define as a fishing expedition.”

Los Angeles Times opinion writer (((Michael McGough))) published an op-ed with the headline “House Democrats are going on a Trump fishing expedition,” arguing that the “timing of Nadler’s announcement raises the question of whether the Democrats already have concluded that Mueller won’t deliver the goods” and that “will play into arguments by Trump supporters that Democrats are moving the goal posts.”

CNN senior political commentator (((David Axelrod))) wrote on Twitter, “Maybe I’m missing something, but the hazard of an omnibus document demand by House judiciary versus discreet, serial ones is that, however legitimate the areas of inquiry, the wide-ranging nature of it is too easily plays into the ‘witch-hunt’ meme.”

The Washington Post’s write-up of the document requests included the line “The extensive scope could bolster claims by Trump and Republicans that congressional Democrats are seeking to undermine the president and cripple his 2020 reelection effort rather than conduct a disciplined, fact-finding inquiry.”

Company offers to build 234 miles of border wall for $1.4 billion

A U.S. company is offering to build 234 miles of President Trump's border wall for just $1.4 billion, a fraction of the $8 billion the Trump administration is hoping to use for that project.

Fisher Sand and Gravel Company's President and CEO Tommy Fisher said the government is overpaying and that for $4.31 billion, he can build the wall and incorporate paved roads and border technology plus warranty.

"Our whole point is to break through the government bureaucracy," Fisher told the Washington Examiner. "If they do the small procurements as they are now … that’s not going to cut it."

Of the $8 billion Trump is hoping to spend, he already has $1.375 billion of that amount from Congress, which can only be used to build fencing in the Rio Grande Valley. Trump is seeking to repurpose another $3.1 billion in defense funding for more border wall and $3.6 billion more through his emergency declaration that Congress and the courts will challenge.

Fisher said that the roughly $1.4 billion is enough to build 20 miles of levee wall in the Rio Grande Valley, plus another 214 miles. That pot of money, however, can only be used in the Rio Grande Valley, according to the bill Congress passed approving those funds and was only expected to be used for about 55 miles of steel slat fencing.

The Army Corps of Engineers is not ready to start looking at how to spend the $8 billion that Trump is hoping to spend on the wall, a representative told the Washington Examiner last week. The corps is considering how to spend money Congress gave DHS last fiscal year and has not requested bids from the private sector because it's still in the procurement process.

Replacement and new wall projects have struggled to get underway in Trump's first two years in office. Just 35 miles of wall have gone up in that time. The Army Corps of Engineers has procured around 75 miles but has not awarded $900 million for the project of the $1.35 billion that was in the 2018 omnibus.

DHS officials and several lawmakers are expected to visit the site of his border wall construction site in Arizona next week.

GOP chairman eyes move to lock in Trump's Iran deal withdrawal

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) said Tuesday he’d like to include language in the annual defense policy bill that codifies President Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.

Inhofe was speaking to reporters in his office about a congressional delegation trip last month that included stops in Germany, Israel, Kosovo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Algeria.

Throughout the trip, Inhofe, a Trump supporter, said he found that countries such as Iran were “waiting Trump out."

“They think he’s going to be defeated,” Inhofe said. “The Iranians are waiting to reestablish the deal that [former Secretary of State] John Kerry made, and they’re all assuming that he’ll be out of office.”

To address that, Inhofe argued, Congress needs to codify what it can of actions Trump has taken, particularly support for Israel’s military and the withdrawal from the Iran deal.

“Both of those thing we can pass in the Senate,” Inhofe said. “It’s not going to be quite as easy to pass in the House. … I’ll be doing that, and we’ll be addressing that.”

Pressed further on whether there will be something in this year’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to make Trump’s Iran deal withdrawal permanent, Inhofe said, “mhm.”

Asked for elaboration by The Hill, a spokeswoman for Inhofe said putting language in the NDAA codifying the Iran deal withdrawal is a goal of his, but that he’s flexible on the exact form since his priority is ultimately getting the NDAA passed.

Such language would likely be a nonstarter in the Democratic-controlled House, with which the Senate will have to negotiate to get the NDAA to the president’s desk.

Trump announced last year he was withdrawing the United States from the 2015 nuclear deal and reimposed all the sanctions that had been lifted as part of the deal.

The agreement, reached by the Obama administration with Iran, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, China and Russia, gave Iran billions of dollars in sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program.

Regional experts have said Iran continues to abide by the terms in the nuclear deal in part because they are hoping Trump is a one-term president and that his successor will return to the accord.

International inspectors said last month Iran remains within the key limits of its nuclear activities imposed by the deal.

DAMASCUS – Russia will seek to have the U.S withdraw refugees from the Er-Rukban camp in southern Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on March 6th.

He drew attention to the fact that this camp serves not only to save people who are now essentially isolated, but also to realize the interests of foreign states illegally present in the Arab Republic. He went to explain that the refugees being held at the camp are not refugees, but prisoners.
