Trump moves to scrap trade privilege for India, Delhi plays down impact

WASHINGTON/NEW DELHI (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump looked set to open a new front in his trade wars with a plan to end preferential trade treatment for India that allows duty-free entry for up to $5.6 billion worth of its exports to the United States.

Monday's move comes as trade tensions between the United States and India mount. The United States is trying to rework pacts with a number of other countries as well, including China. Trump has said weak deals have cost millions of American jobs and has vowed to cut U.S. trade deficits.

India played down the impact, saying it was keeping retaliatory tariffs out of its talks with the United States, but the opposition could seize on the issue to embarrass Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of general elections this year.

Trump has repeatedly called out India for its high tariffs, and U.S. trade officials said scrapping the concessions would take at least 60 days after notifications to Congress and the Indian government.

"I am taking this step because, after intensive engagement between the United States and the government of India, I have determined that India has not assured the United States that it will provide equitable and reasonable access to the markets of India," Trump told congressional leaders in a letter.

India is the world's largest beneficiary of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), which dates from the 1970s, and ending its participation would be the strongest punitive action the United States has taken against the country since Trump took office.

Nevada state Senate leader resigns over campaign finance charges

Nevada's state Senate leader has resigned over accusations of financial misconduct, paving the way for the state's highest legislative body to be led by a woman for the first time in state history.

Senate Majority Leader Kelvin Atkinson (D) resigned in a floor speech Tuesday after admitting to using campaign funds for personal use. Atkinson was the first openly gay man and only the third African-American to hold the position of Senate majority leader in Nevada's history.

The Nevada Independent reports that he is likely to be replaced by his assistant Senate majority leader, state Sen. Nicole Cannizzaro (D), who would become the first woman to hold the majority leader title in Nevada.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) condemned Atkinson's conduct in a statement obtained by the Independent, while pledging to work with Cannizzaro.

“I am extremely disappointed in the news that Kelvin Atkinson misappropriated campaign funds for his personal use,” Sisolak said. “This admitted violation of the law goes against the integrity every elected officer in the state of Nevada should uphold. By doing so, he betrayed the trust of the public, and therefore should be held accountable."

“As governor, I look forward to working with legislative leadership, including Acting Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, to ensure our state government operates with the high standards of transparency and integrity that Nevadans deserve," he added.

Atkinson said he would plead guilty to federal charges of misappropriation of campaign funds for personal use, according to the Nevada Independent. It wasn't immediately clear what the charges stemmed from, but a spokesman for Nevada's Democratic Senate caucus called the allegations serious.

"The Nevada Senate Democrats are saddened and disappointed to learn of the circumstances leading to Senator Atkinson's resignation today," the lawmakers said. "The charges against him are serious, and allege conduct that we strongly condemn."

A US government-funded radio and TV station in Miami directed at Cuba has fired eight staff members it says are responsible for a program that aired last year calling George Soros a “non-practicing Jew of flexible morals” who was the “architect of the financial collapse of 2008.”

The Office of Cuba Broadcasting's Radio and Television Marti, sister broadcasters to Voice of America and other US Agency for Global Media outlets like Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia and Radio Farda, ran a three-part report on Soros last May that USAGM Director John Lansing characterized in a Wednesday statement as

"blatantly anti-Semitic."

The reports were broadcast in Spanish with the intent of being distributed across Cuban media, the Washington Post notes.

Lansing said a months-long investigation into the broadcast and the events that led up to its airing concluded the video was "deeply offensive and wholly inconsistent with our professional standards and ethics. OCB should have never aired it."

"A comprehensive human resources investigation of the incident is now complete. One employee and three contractors have been terminated to date, and the agency has initiated the standard disciplinary process for four additional OCB employees," Lansing continued. Four others were terminated immediately after the program was brought to the public light by The Cuban Triangle, a blog about Cuban issues run by an independent investigator, just days after Soros received a bomb threat last October.

"On its face, these reports were anti-Semitic and unjournalistic and violated our high standards of editorial content," Lansing told the Post. "We found the eight people who we felt were the most responsible."

Lansing told the paper the incident was "purely a matter of a rogue journalist who was being supervised poorly that allowed that terrible piece of content to be published," and that "there was no connection to anyone in the Trump administration, period."

New York County: An unlawfully present Mexican national, was arrested by local authorities for Assault 2nd, Assault 3rd, and Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation. He A detainer was issued, but was not honored and he was released. He subsequently plead guilty to Assault 3rd. On Feb. 26, ERO deportation officers arrested him in Manhattan. He is currently detained in ICE custody pending a removal hearing before an immigration judge.

Queens County: An unlawfully present Mexican national, was arrested by local authorities for Assault 2nd , Act in Manner Injure Child Less Than 17, Escape, Harassment 2nd: Physical Contact. The victim in this case was under the age of 11. A detainer was issued, but was not honored and he was released. On Feb. 6, ERO deportation officers arrested him in Kew Gardens. He is currently detained in ICE custody pending a removal hearing before an immigration judge.

Queens County: An unlawfully present Mexican national, was arrested by local authorities for Criminal Contempt: Disobey Court. A detainer was issued, but was not honored and he was released. We need to go back to 1890 to understand what has taken place. An article in the official Vatican periodical La Civilta Cattolica dated 23 Oct. 1890 reveals how Catholics perceived Jews 126 years ago. The article confirms that a satanic cult, Cabalist Judaism, has colonized humanity by leveraging their control of credit and Freemasonry. Society is indeed “satanically possessed.”

Our political and cultural leadership are “straw men” — fronts for the Cabalist (i.e. Illuminati Jewish) central bankers. This is why our “leaders” are such perverts, criminals and non-entities. To ensure they toe the line, they are filmed in compromising sexual situations. To ensure the whole rotten structure doesn’t collapse, the bankers have erected a police state, using terrorism (which they instigate) as a pretext. “Democracy” is an elaborate charade.

Multiculturalism and diversity, feminism and homosexuality, Muslim and Latin in-migration are employed to divide and destabilize. Most people “go along to get along”, to collaborate in their own enslavement.

The 1890 article begins by decrying the “invasion of Israelites into every sector of public and social life” in Europe and Russia. Christians are rallying to stop “the spread of this plague” and “its most pernicious consequences.”

The House Democrats’ “Rebuke” of Rep. Ilhan Omar is a Fraud For Many Reasons, Including its Wild Distortion of Her Comments

GOP Congressman Steve King has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for sixteen years, yet Democrats – who controlled the House for four of those years and now control it again – never formally rebuked or condemned him until last month (they did so at the same time that Republicans removed him from his Committee assignments due to a long history of white supremacist remarks).

By extremely stark contrast, Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar – the first black Muslim woman ever elected to the Congress – has served in the House for a little more than two months, and House Democratic leaders have already formally condemned her once and are preparing to so again, this time even more harshly and officially, on Wednesday.

On February 11, the House Democratic leadership, responding to statements made by Omar about large donors and AIPAC driving pro-Israel policies, issued a joint statement condemning Omar for what they called her “use of anti-Semitic tropes,” adding that her “prejudicial accusations about Israel’s defenders” are “deeply offensive.” They then demanded: “We condemn these remarks and we call upon Congresswoman Omar to immediately apologize for these hurtful comments.”

Omar then issued a statement of her own in which she “unequivocally apologized” for unintentionally invoking “anti-Semitic tropes,” but made crystal clear that “the problematic role of lobbyists in our politics” – whether it be AIPAC, as well as the NRA or the fossil fuel industry – was one she would continue to aggressively address and combat.

The Congresswoman quickly made good on her promise to continue speaking out about AIPAC’s toxic influence, the destructive and immoral support given to Israel by the U.S., and the subordination of Americans’ Constitutional rights and the country’s national interests to that foreign nation.

Speaking last Wednesday in Washington at a town hall meeting with several other progressive House members, Congresswoman Omar was asked about the use of the “anti-semitism” label to shut down debate over Israel. In reply, she said: “I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is OK to push for allegiance to a foreign country.”

That remark created a new outburst of anti-Semitism accusations against Omar, initially provoked by New York Magazine’s Jonathan Chait, whose column carried the most sensationalistic and misleading headline possible: “Ilhan Omar Accuses Israel Hawks of ‘Allegiance to a Foreign Country.'”

That, in turn, led numerous AIPAC-supporting Democratic House members to again denounce her for anti-Semitism, leading to this exchange with a Democratic House colleague who had accused her of “prejudice” and “bigotry”:
