The Threat to Nancy Pelosi’s Speakership Is Suddenly Serious

Following House Democrats’ first full meeting with both their departing members and incoming members-elect, reporters asked Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan---who’s organizing a suddenly serious opposition to Nancy Pelosi’s bid for speaker—whether he and his allies would really follow through with the effort that’s driving such a rift within the caucus, on its first day in charge, during its first vote.

“Yes,” he said. He didn’t miss a beat.

Ryan claims that his group has members numbering in the “mid-20s” who are adamant that they would not support Pelosi in a floor vote for speaker. Of those known publicly, it’s about an even split between incumbents who’ve sought to overthrow Pelosi for years and new members who ran on a pledge not to support her. Since Pelosi can only suffer about 15 or 17 defections, and if this group’s resolve is as firm as its generals insist it is, she would not have the votes. On Tuesday night, Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton, one of Pelosi’s most persistent thorns, said with “100 percent” confidence that Pelosi would not have the numbers to become speaker, as did Texas Rep. Filemon Vela.

At some point prior to the Nov. 28 caucus vote determining the party’s nominee for the post, the rebels plan to release a public letter with the signatures of members who would not vote for Pelosi. (An early copy of the letter, obtained by HuffPost Wednesday, already had 17 signatures with more in the wings.) Ideally, they say, Pelosi would see the writing on the wall, bow out of the contest before the caucus vote, and allow House Democrats to nominate someone else who could get 218 votes, thereby avoiding an embarrassing spectacle on the floor.

Minds can change---but those close to Pelosi say that she will never do that.

“Pelosi has been clear she’s taking this to the floor,” one senior Democratic aide said. “She just elected the [most] diverse House of Representatives in history, and she’s not going to be deterred by five white guys.” Her strategy is to win the closed-door caucus nomination on Nov. 28, present the choice as a binary between her and Republican leader Kevin McCarthy, and turn the pressure to a boil, daring Ryan’s group to block her on live television.

With each side expressing 100 percent confidence in their ability to succeed, the first House Democratic majority in eight years is headed toward a game of chicken that could play out on the House floor. Just how a majority loves to kick off a fresh congressional session in power.

U.S. Army Reserve pilots Deployment Assistance Teams for RFX units

TRENTON, N.J. - The U.S. Army Reserve recently launched Ready Force X units to allow Soldiers to deploy under shorter time constraints. While the units prepared for their new roles as RFX units, a stop-gap emerged and presented the Army with an opportunity to do what it does best, adapt and overcome to its surroundings.

The four readiness divisions of the U. S. Army Reserve developed a concept of a Deployment Assistance Team Command and Control Cell. These cells will allow units to focus on assisting Soldiers and placing them where they need to be in a timely matter.

This is where the DAT cell plays such a crucial role; they focus on getting equipment from the RFX unit home locations to the various ports and vessels where deploying Soldiers will be able to obtain their equipment in a timely fashion once they are boots on ground overseas.

The commanding general for the 99th Readiness Division explains to troops within the first DAT cell how the planning team came up with the proof of principle.

"You're going to come here, your unit will form, and be here for a few days, whenever that is, and then [the unit will] go leave to where their particular mobilization site is," said Maj. Gen. Troy Kok, the Commanding General of the 99th Readiness Division. "But you still have this thing, called equipment, but [the unit] does not have the time or capacity to be able to load it and ship it, and that is the driving factor for what we're doing here today."

While the team has not been officially set, it is testing its capabilities through a series of exercises. The exercises have several scenarios that a unit may face, or assets required of the unit while deployed.

"This exercise simulates a single unit trying to deploy that has vehicles and equipment in three separate locations that need to get to the port for onward movement," said Sgt. 1st Class Jon Campbell, a materials handling operator assigned to the DAT for the exercises.

With the possibility for failure looming over the team, between vehicle change outs, and maintenance issues, the exercise overall proved successful for all involved.

"We were successful in all three locations, in assisting in getting the equipment moved from point a to point b, simulated," said the Rockland, Massachusetts native. "Given the circumstances, of having so many people from so many different units, with a particular handful of skills, they picked the right team for the right job and we got it done."

As the U.S. Army Reserve continues to define this proof of principle, Kok says that the goal is to have a team located within each readiness division to ensure that units are ready and capable to fulfill their mission when the time comes.

The panel, hosted by Luckey, took place at the annual Association of the United States Army Annual Meeting and Exposition held in Washington, D.C. The overarching theme included how the U.S. Army Reserve, alongside the Active and National Guard components, is preparing to fight and win America's future wars as one, well-oiled machine.

"This is about going to high-end, contingency operations in the most contested environment in the history of civilization and having to surge -- in our case, that's [mobilizing] 42,000 to 45,000 Soldiers very quickly," said Luckey. "The Army's never had to fight that way before."

What does it take for the Total Army to operate in a constantly-changing, complex battle space?

Contributing panel members who addressed this question included Lt. Gen. Christopher Cavoli, the commanding general of U.S. Army Europe, Lt. Gen. Michael D. Lundy, the commanding general of U.S. Army Combined Arms Center and Lt. Gen. Aundre Piggee, the deputy chief of staff for U.S. Army logistics.

The U.S. Army Combined Arms Center is planning major training events for the Total Army that will involve multiple units, starting at the brigade level and higher, simultaneously mobilizing and operating under the same Army doctrine -- but under very different scenarios, said Lundy.

This will help identify shortfalls in capabilities, particularly with respect to setting up a theater in a combat environment, perhaps on multiple fronts.

"An often, overlooked aspect of a well-set theater is what the Army Reserve puts into [it]," said Cavoli. "My demands are more dynamic than the Active Component has the elasticity to fill. Gen. Luckey is so generously working with us to ensure what they [U.S. Army Reserve] do now, since the situation has changed, is helping us to set the theater."

Generating the decisive combat power required to win the nation's wars is Luckey's top priority. Two years into his tenure, he is shifting the culture of America's Army in order to be the most capable, combat-ready and lethal reserve force in the Nation's history.

"Frankly, I take it very personally," said Luckey. "We're making sure we're able to get after it and making sure this component of the Army is ready to roll when we've got to move."

SAVE BILLIONS EVERY YEAR

Let me tell you how to save the country BILLIONS every year while lifting people off of welfare.

The current system allows beneficiaries of the welfare system to earn up to a certain aount

of money every month. I think it's around $700 or $800 bucks a month.

Once these people make more than that amount they are kicked off of their benefits.

THIS SHOULD NOT BE.

THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE

Once a person makes more than that $800 limit instead of being kicked off the government should

simply deduct the overage from their benefits check.

So if a person made $925 that month simply deduct the extra $125 from their next check.

This would ENCOURAGE people to work more and not fear losing their benefits.

Once the person starts making the total amount of his benefits check for say six months THEN they should terminate the benefits.

This way the governent would spend less money every month

and those receiving the benefits wouldn't be scared of losing everything the first time

they make more than the allowed amount.

That system enourages people not to work.
