Chief Justice John Roberts spoke publicly for the first time Tuesday about Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s contentious ascension to the U.S. Supreme Court, vowing to protect the Court’s independence and impartiality.
Delivering remarks at the University of Minnesota Law School, Roberts opened by alluding to Kavanaugh’s confirmation. He noted that the justices shake hands with one another before entering the courtroom for oral argument or gathering for private conferences, in keeping with a tradition established by Chief Justice Melville Fuller, who led the Court from 1888 to 1910.
“It’s a small thing, perhaps, but it is a repeated reminder that, as our newest colleague put it, we do not sit on opposite sides of an aisle, we do not caucus in separate rooms, we do not serve one party or one interest, we serve one nation,” the chief said, referencing remarks Kavanaugh made during his ceremonial installation at the White House.
“I want to assure all of you that we will continue to do that,” Roberts added.
He declined to expressly condemn the confirmation process, however, out of deference to the popular branches of government. Though Supreme Court justices are often asked about their confirmations in public, they usually couch their answers in general terms to avoid being seen as unduly partisan
“I will not criticize the political branches,” Roberts said. “We do that often enough in our opinions. What I would like to do is emphasize how the judicial branch is and must be very different.”
“We do not speak for the people, but we speak for the Constitution,” he added.
Roberts explained that some of the Court’s finest moments came when it was at odds with public opinion. He specifically named Brown v. Board of Education and West Virginia v. Barnette, a 1943 decision which found schools cannot oblige students to recite the pledge of allegiance, as examples.
Kavanaugh participated in a session at the high court for the first time on Oct. 9. Normalcy prevailed despite the recent tension, as Kavanaugh and his new colleagues seemed in especially good spirits.

A senior U.S. Treasury employee has been arrested and charged with leaking to news outlets about financial suspicious transactions on former Trump campaign figures Paul Manafort and Rick Gates, accused Russian agent Maria Butina and the Russian Embassy, federal authorities said Wednesday.
Natalie Mayflower Sours Edwards, 40, of Quinton, Virginia, and a senior adviser in the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network or FinCEN, was arrested Tuesday. She faces one count of unlawfully disclosing suspicious activity reports, or SARs, and one count of conspiracy to disclose those reports.
Each count carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
Ms. Edwards is scheduled to appear before a judge late Wednesday.
Prosecutors with the Southern District of New York say Ms. Edwards leaked “numerous” SARs to a BuzzFeed News reporter starting in October 2017 and continuing through this month.
The unidentified journalist wrote roughly a dozen articles that included details from those reports, according to court documents. BuzzFeed reporters Jason Leopold and Anthony Cormier have bylines on stories cited in the criminal complaint against Ms. Edwards.
Ms. Edwards transmitted the reports by taking photographs of them and texting them to the reporter over an encrypted email, according to court documents. She also shared internal FinCEN emails and other non-public reports, prosecutors said.
At the time of her arrest, Ms. Edwards had a flash drive that appeared to have the unlawfully disclosed SARs, a cellphone containing numerous communications over an encrypted application and “other sensitive government information,” prosecutors said.
At the time of her arrest, according to federal prosecutors in Manhattan, she “was in possession of a flash drive appearing to be the flash drive on which she saved the unlawfully disclosed SARs, and a cellphone containing numerous communications over an encrypted application in which she transmitted SARs and other sensitive government information to” the reporter.

University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer tackled the suppression of free speech on college campuses during a discussion in early October.
In the process, he advocated for both freedom of speech and academic freedom on college and university campuses across the U.S.
What are the details?
Zimmer, who has been the school’s president since 2006, spoke at the City Club of Cleveland, in Cleveland on Oct. 3, where he discussed the school’s policy on free speech and expression.
Administration at the University of Chicago — which is well known for its 2015 “Chicago Statement” — is adamant that one of the university’s duties is to uphold the right to free speech in order to foster the ability for constructive discussion.
The school came under fire in January after one of the school’s faculty members invited former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon to speak at the campus. Though students held protests on the campus, demanding that Bannon not be able to visit the university, the school still permitted Bannon to come and speak, though a date has yet to be set.
“It is for the individual members of the University community, not for the University as an institution, to make those judgments for themselves, and to act on those judgments by not seeking to suppress speech, but by openly and vigorously contesting the ideas that they oppose,” a portion of the statement explaining the university’s decision read.
In his speech at the City Club of Cleveland, Zimmer spoke out against people who would end free speech out of “self-righteous, moral, or political indignation, an agenda driven by such moral or political views, and comfort.”
Zimmer added that free speech is necessary — especially on campuses of higher education — because “challenging one’s assumptions inevitably creates discomfort, but a discomfort that is necessary for growth, understanding, and achievement.
“Privileging feelings, to the extent that a child feels they are always entitled to feel good and comfortable, and that the world should be organized around this, is not helpful in this regard,” he added. “And what we are seeing in some cases within high schools and universities is an expectation, and then demands, for such privileging, and then the inappropriate acquiescence to such demands.”
Zimmer also noted that he believes the suppression of free speech is sometimes done to fight for inclusivity, which often results in the opposite effect.
In conclusion, Zimmer reaffirmed his stance against creating “safe spaces” in such institutions for fear of sabotaging America’s youth.

SANTA ANA, Calif. – Special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), this morning arrested eight defendants named in a grand jury indictment that alleges a scheme to send methamphetamine to Hawaii, including nearly 12 kilograms of narcotics made to look like decorative Aztec calendars and statues.
Today’s arrests, conducted with partners from the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Cypress Police Department, follow the filing of a seven-count indictment on October 10. A ninth defendant charged in the indictment was already in federal custody on an unrelated case.
The indictment alleges a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, including an attempted shipment on July 17 of 11.7 kilograms of pure methamphetamine from a post office in Garden Grove. Those drugs were part of a nearly 90-pound shipment that appeared to be colorful, decorative Mexican items, including replicas of the 500-year-old Aztec calendar stone.
“Methamphetamine – no matter how it’s packaged – is a powerful drug that devastates our communities,” said Mark Zito, Assistant Special Agent in Charge for HSI Los Angeles. “HSI will continue to closely collaborate with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners to keep this dangerous contraband from reaching our streets.”
The indictment also alleges that members of the conspiracy, over the past year, sent to Hawaii a package containing about two pounds of methamphetamine and another with nearly five pounds of the drug.
All three of the narcotic shipments alleged in the indictment were intercepted by law enforcement.
The nine defendants named in the indictment are:
Felix Salgado, 28, of Perris, who allegedly obtained wholesale quantities of methamphetamine on behalf of the conspiracy;
Vaimanino Lee Pomele, 49, of Garden Grove, who allegedly orchestrated the drug shipments to Hawaii;
German Bastidas Nunez, also known as “Cheque,” 46, of Moreno Valley, who allegedly supplied narcotics to Salgado and who was already in custody;
Fernando Caballero Rascon, 42, of Garden Grove, who allegedly purchased methamphetamine from Pomele;
James Arnold Borbon, also known as “Dino,” 58, of Garden Grove, an alleged customer of the drug ring;
Moises Rey Avina, 39, of Santa Ana, who allegedly purchased methamphetamine from Pomele;
Gary Wayne Minter, 55, of Victorville, who allegedly used his residence as a stash house;
Alejandra Pomele, who is Vaimanino’s wife; 44, also of Garden Grove, who allegedly delivered narcotics to a customer on at least one occasion; and
Stephen Dgewell Martin, 30, of Anaheim, who allegedly dropped off the shipment containing the methamphetamine disguised as Aztec calendars and statues at the post office.
The eight defendants taken into custody this morning are expected to be arraigned on the indictment this afternoon in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana. If convicted of the charges in the indictment, each defendant would face a mandatory minimum sentence of at least five years in federal prison, and each potentially could be sentenced to decades in prison.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rosalind Wang of the Santa Ana Branch Office.

Portal and Portal+ represent Facebook's attempt to cash in on the smart device craze that was largely started by Amazon and its Echo line. Rather than go out completely on its own, Facebook infused Amazon's Alexa assistant into its Portal gadgets. They are essentially Facebook's versions of Amazon's Echo Show, with the same digital assistant sitting behind the curtain.
Initially, Facebook had said that any data collected through its Portal devices would not be used to target users with ads on Facebook. However, the company has clarified things to say that yes, the data could actually be used for targeted ads.
"Portal voice calling is built on the Messenger infrastructure, so when you make a video call on Portal, we collect the same types of information (i.e., usage data such as length of calls, frequency of calls) that we collect on other Messenger-enabled devices. We may use this information to inform the ads we show you across our platforms. Other general usage data, such as aggregate usage of apps, etc., may also feed into the information that we use to serve ads," Facebook told Recode.
We would have assumed as much, if not for Facebook putting the word out previously that this would not be the case. After all, Facebook thrives on targeted ads. Zuckerberg was upfront about this when testifying to Congress, saying that users prefer to receive ads that a relevant to them rather than random ads, if ads are part of the experience either way.
How this will play out remains to be seen. Facebook's product VP Rafa Camargo also said that while data can be used for targeted ads, he doesn't know if it will actually happen. He also pointed out that the Portal devices do not serve up ads directly. If the data is to target ads, it would be on other Facebook apps.

Is It Okay To Celebrate Halloween? For Many Americans, It Is A Time For Blood Rituals And Unspeakable Acts Of Evil
What I am about to share with you is incredibly disturbing. Every year on October 31st, some of the most horrifying acts imaginable are carried out in dark corners and back rooms all across America. In this article, you are going to read about some of those acts. But for most Americans, Halloween is a supposedly “innocent” holiday that is all about dressing up, eating lots of candy and having fun. When I was growing up, I gladly participated in the festivities too, because I didn’t understand what the holiday was all about. According to the National Retail Federation, approximately 70 percent of all Americans celebrate Halloween, and a total of somewhere around 9 billion dollars will be spent on the holiday this year. But most Americans do not understand that almost all of our modern “Halloween traditions” have their roots in a bloody ancient pagan festival known as Samhain.
The origins of Halloween are Celtic in tradition and have to do with observing the end of summer sacrifices to gods in Druidic tradition. In what is now Britain and France, it was the beginning of the Celtic year, and they believed Samhain, the lord of death, sent evil spirits abroad to attack humans, who could escape only by assuming disguises and looking like evil spirits themselves. The waning of the sun and the approach of dark winter made the evil spirits rejoice and play nasty tricks. Believe it or not, most of our Halloween practices can be traced back to these old pagan rites and superstitions.
Of course most Americans have never even heard of Samhain, but for those that are into witchcraft it is one of the most important days of the year. The largest witchcraft tradition in America is known as “Wicca”, and if you do a Google search for “Wicca” and “Halloween” you will quickly discover that it is one of the key dates on their “wheel of the year”…
On the Wiccan calendar, known as the “wheel of the year” it is also the day when the god dies, to be reborn again on the Winter Solstice. Samhain is therefore the day when the veil between the living and the dead is considered thinnest, and is a time to remember people in our lives who have passed away.
You may not personally know any Wiccans, but the truth is that their numbers are absolutely exploding in the United States. According to one recent news article, there were at least 340,000 of them living in America a decade ago…
While the US government does not regularly collect detailed religious data, because of concerns that it may violate the separation of church and state, several organizations have tried to fill the data gap. From 1990 to 2008, Trinity College in Connecticut ran three large, detailed religion surveys. Those have shown that Wicca grew tremendously over this period. From an estimated 8,000 Wiccans in 1990, they found there were about 340,000 practitioners in 2008.
And more recent polling suggests that there are now between 1 million and 1.5 million people that identify as either Wiccan or Pagan currently living in the United States…
Although Trinity College hasn’t run a survey since 2008, the Pew Research Center picked up the baton in 2014. It found that 0.4% of Americans, or around 1 to 1.5 million people, identify as Wicca or Pagan—which suggests continued robust growth for the communities.
So we are talking about a very large group of people.

Veterans and old people get free socialized healthcare—and, for the most part, they love it. Obviously, one of these things is not like the others—the United States has put many students in the position of making decisions that can determine their financial futures when they're teenagers. This has nightmarish consequences: Some 44 million people have $1.5 trillion in student loan debt on the books. And even when young people do get through college and find a decent job, many can't fathom possibly buying a home or taking on other trappings of adulthood when faced with decades of monthly loan bills.
The worst part is that those who sought an elite education on the widely accepted notion that it would help them later in life were basically sold a bad bill of goods.
All that debt provides awfully little payoff in terms of boosted wages, even as it ensnares more and more people and hits youth of color especially hard, according to a new paper released Tuesday by two researchers at the left-leaning Roosevelt Institute. Research fellows Julie Margetta Morgan and Marshall Steinbaum concluded that more and more debt hasn't significantly boosted income for college grads—it just seems that way because high school grads without BAs are making less than they once did. They also found that looking at decent rates of repayment by student debtors is a misleading way to look at the scale of this crisis. And thanks to workers lacking the power they once enjoyed in an increasingly skill-obsessed economy, young people are often being pressured into getting extra degrees on their own dime (which is to say by taking on more debt) for minimal payoff.

In notables the above post was referred to as "more pedophile symbolism in children's movies". I've read the book, and there's no way Pet Sematary is a children's movie. Also the Indian graveyard in the book was laid like a spiral, so I don't think that has pedo associations. Spirals have multiple meanings, and I think the original spiral was related to descent to (and ascent from) death.
However those people in animal masks in the trailer are most definitely not in the book. I find the child with the rabbit head particularly concerning. Someone deliberately included that bit of symbolism in the movie without regard for plot logic.

Judge Considers Monsanto Appeal, Jurors Demand Court Respect Verdict

Learning that a judge may overturn their historic decision to hold the chemical company Monsanto-Bayer accountable for manufacturing cancer-causing weedkillers, several jurors are demanding that their verdict in a case decided in August be upheld.
Gary Kitahata and Robert Howard are among the jurors who unanimously found that Monsanto was liable for $289 million in damages, to be paid to former school groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer after spending years using Monsanto’s products at his job.
In two separate letters written in recent days, Kitahata and Howard appealed to California Superior Court Judge Suzanne Bolanos this week after she announced her consideration of a retrial and indicated she might overturn nearly all of the damages the jury awarded to Johnson.
“We hope the judge in this case will not be pressured by Monsanto-Bayer, but will instead respect the jury’s decision and rule in favor of public health, not corporate profits.” —Katherine Paul, Organic Consumers Association
While Bolanos argued the plaintiff’s legal team did not prove Monsanto knew about the dangers of its product, Kitihata told the the San Francisco Chronicle on Monday that the judge “had a chance to raise these questions during trial and even during jury deliberations. Kitihata and the other jurors found that Monsanto owed $250 million to Johnson in punitive damages as well as $31 million for shortening his life expectancy. Bolanos said in a public hearing last Wednesday that she may overturn both sums, leaving Johnson with $8 million. The judge is expected to reach a decision by next Monday.
In a statement to Common Dreams, Katherine Paul, associate director for the Organic Consumers Association, denounced the judge’s consideration of a severely reduced verdict for Monsanto’s benefit.
“It’s unfortunate that the court is willing to consider overturning the verdict of 12 jurors who carefully and thoughtfully made their decision based on factual evidence,” Paul said. “We hope the judge in this case will not be pressured by Monsanto-Bayer, but will instead respect the jury’s decision and rule in favor of public health, not corporate profits.”
After a six-week trial involving testimony from medical and scientific experts, the jury found that Monsanto had sold glyphosate-based products to Johnson’s school district even though it knew the chemical could cause cancer.
“You may not have been convinced by the evidence, but we were,” Kitahata wrote to Bolanos in his letter. “I urge you to respect and honor our verdict and the six weeks of our lives that we dedicated to this trial.”
The possibility that the jury’s “unanimous verdict could be summarily overturned demeans our system of justice and shakes my confidence in that system,” wrote Howard in his own letter.
Glyphosate was classified by the World Health Organization as a “probably human carcinogen” in 2015, the same year Johnson as diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and a year after a previous diagnosis of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Johnson’s case was just the first to go to trial out of more 4,000 lawsuits against the company, with plaintiffs across the country arguing Monsanto’s products contributed significantly to their cancer diagnoses.

New Haven police said emergency responders saw at least 15 overdoses since Thursday afternoon, and possibly up to 22. At least two people have died. The city is warning residents that there is a batch of tainted, life-threatening heroin on the streets
In the suburbs of Long Island, NY, heroin use is an increasing problem. According to www.suburbanheroin.com a website devoted to the heroin epidemic on Long Island states that in 2012 – 2013 more than 242 people died from heroin use. Long Island is home to some of the wealthiest communities in New York State which goes to show that heroin is affecting all neighborhoods rich and poor. The NBC news report said that the CDC admitted that heroin has become an epidemic since 2002

Now the question is why heroin use has dramatically increased since 2002? Washington claims that Mexico is the source of the heroin that is flooding U.S. streets “with 10,500 hectares under poppy cultivation in 2012” while Afghanistan had “224,000 hectares” according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in a 2014 report but the numbers tell a different story. Mexico’s heroin trade is small in comparison although it has been increasing its production capabilities.

Donald Trump may be remembered as the most honest president in modern American history.
Don’t get me wrong, Trump lies all the time. He said that he “enacted the biggest tax cuts and reforms in American history” (actually they are the eighth largest) and that “our economy is the strongest it’s ever been in the history of our country” (which may one day be true, but not yet). In part, it’s a New York thing — everything is the biggest and the best.
But when it comes to the real barometer of presidential truthfulness — keeping his promises — Trump is a paragon of honesty. For better or worse, since taking office Trump has done exactly what he promised he would.
Trump kept his promise to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, something his three immediate predecessors also promised yet failed to do. He promised to “crush and destroy ISIS,” and two years later he is on the verge of eliminating the Islamic State’s physical caliphate. He promised to impose a travel ban on countries that he saw as posing a terrorist threat, and after several false starts the final version of his ban was upheld by the Supreme Court. He promised to punish Syria if it used chemical weapons on its people, and, unlike his immediate predecessor, he followed through — not once but twice.
Trump pledged to nominate Supreme Court justices “in the mold of Justice [Antonin] Scalia,” and now Neil M. Gorsuch and Brett M. Kavanaugh sit on the high court. Trump also pledged to fill the federal appellate courts with young, conservative judges, and so far the Senate has confirmed 29 — more than any recent president at this point in his administration.
Trump vowed to pass historic tax reforms and signed the first major overhaul of the tax code in three decades. He vowed an unprecedented regulatory rollback, with a strict policy to eliminate two existing regulations for every new regulation. In his first year, he achieved $8.1 billion in lifetime regulatory savings and is on track to achieve an additional $9.8 billion this year.

Only in a few rare instances has he backtracked on a campaign pledge — such as when he admitted that he was wrong to promise a complete withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan and reversed course. I’m glad he did.
But whether one agrees or disagrees is not the point. When Trump says he will do something, you can take it to the bank. Yes, he takes liberties with the truth. But unlike his predecessor, he did not pass his signature legislative achievement on the basis of a lie (“If you like your health care plan, you can keep it ”) — which is clearly worse than falsely bragging that your tax cut is the biggest ever.
The fact is, in his first two years, Trump has compiled a remarkable record of presidential promise - keeping. He’d probably say it’s the best in history — which may or may not end up being true. It’s too soon to tell.

everyone has been speculating about these mysterious alerts but today twitter has released a massive public data set of supposed "russian bot" tweets.
it should be strongly considered that the alerts that went out were part of an attempt to forge a record of fake activity tied to this narrative release.
in this scenario twitter would have tried to create a record of alerts and activity to attribute to "russian bots." most likely a part of their system was supposed to filter these messages out but that system failed and so users ended up seeing them.

All of the above-referenced post is true, with one HUGE CAVEAT: the Office of the Pardon Attorney has to be used for the public records laws to take effect. The President has inherent authority to simply sign a document himself and issue a pardon. The Office of the Pardon Attorney is an explicit creature of the Executive – it is governed by regulations promulgated by DOJ. See U.S. Const., Art. II, Sec. 2 (“[the president] shall have Power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment”); 28 C.F.R. §§ 0.35, 0.36.
I'm not even sure that the Congress could pass a law requiring pardons to be conducted in a certain way. Based on the way the Constitution is worded, the power is absolutely in the hands of the president and it is for the executive to determine the manner in which pardons are granted and whether or not they are made public. It has been customary that they are made public, but there is no legal obligation that they be made public, or that the Office of the Pardon Attorney even be read into a specific pardon. The only reason FOIA comes into play is WHEN the Office of the Pardon Attorney is used. There is, however, no constitutional or other legal requirement that the Office of the Pardon Attorney be used.
What this means is that HUSSEIN probably wrote himself a SECRET PARDON that read something like this: I, HUSSEIN, hereby pardon myself for all offenses against the United States from [insert date of birth] to [insert final day as president].

As tuition has risen over the last several decades in the U.S., student loan debt has ballooned. This paper investigates the individual and societal effects of student loan debt by focusing on trends in student debt and labor market outcomes. Findings include:
• More education has not led to higher earnings over time.
Given rising student debt and postsecondary attainment, we would expect to see improvements in earnings. However, the distribution of earnings in the labor market has remained relatively unchanged over time. And to the extent that individuals see an income boost based on college attainment, it is only relative to falling wages for high school graduates.
• Student debt is a burden for a growing share of young adults.
Traditional metrics, such as median student debt over time and the median debt payment-to-income ratio, fail to consider the changing distribution of debtors or the changes in the ways that borrowers repay their loans. Once these factors are accounted for, the data show that many more Americans have debt, and the burden of that debt is more significant now than for previous generations.
• Credentialization better explains these dynamics than the “skills gap.”
Although the country’s populace is becoming more educated, each educational group is becoming less well paid. This is a result of declining worker power, which allows employers to demand a higher level of educational attainment for any given job, not a broken link between workforce skills and labor market demands.
• These trends have had particularly negative impacts on Black and brown Americans.
Credentialization is compounded for people of color, who already have to pursue more education than their peers for the same or similar positions. Given that people of color have less individual and community wealth, students of color take on a disproportionate amount of student debt, further contributing to disparities in debt by race and exacerbating economic disadvantages.
