Why would a new US military base in Poland become a threat to the entire region?

The Russian Foreign Ministry considers the possible installation of a US military base in Poland as a threat to Russia. However, for the military analyst Aleksandr Zhilin, the installation of this base could affect the security of the whole Europe.

Commenting on US President Donald Trump’s statement on the possible establishment of a military base in Poland, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said that positioning that base would mean the destruction of the NATO-Russia Founding Act 1997, which directly prohibits the deployment of substantial fighting forces along the border.

Military expert and retired colonel Aleksandr Zhilin revealed why the base could pose a threat not only to Russia but also to the EU.

“We have repeatedly stated that by establishing military installations in the territory of Eastern European countries, the US eliminates the national security of these countries. Polish authorities force Russia to make some corrections,” he said.

According to the analyst, the missiles installed at the US base in Poland would take very little time to reach Russian territory, so Moscow would have to include Poland in the list of countries against which, in case of extreme threat, a pre-emptive strike is needed. For Zhilin, the installation of the US base in Poland is advantageous only to the US, not to the Polish people.

The military expert said that if Eastern European countries continue to let Americans set up bases in their territory “they could face a critical situation when the US military machine starts operating. The tragedy is that it is very simple to launch this machine, but it is impossible to stop it,” Zhilin said.

According to him, the EU also does not like the US military presence in the region.

“It is clear that plans to set up a military base in Poland are directed against Russia, but not only against it, why, for example, are Germany or France so dubious about this plan? Betting on Poland with the help of the US could challenge the traditional leaders of Europe. This is in accordance with the permanent US principle – divide and conquer,” he explained.

Number of Immigrants Referred To German Security Services Rose Fourfold in 2017

The German government ministry responsible for processing refugees and asylum seekers referred over ten thousand cases of suspicious migrants to the security services in 2017, a significant rise on the previous year.

The latest whole-year figures for the number of reports of migrants suspected of being an endangerment to the national security situation or preparing to use force was 10,597 in 2017, a fourfold rise compared to the 2,418 in 2016. This itself was already a significant rise from 2015, when there were 571.

In the 2018 year to August, there were 4,979 reports made to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz, BfV) by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge, BAMF).

The figures, reported by Germany’s Welt newspaper came to light after a request for information was made to the Federal Government by the centrist Free Democratic Party (FDP).

Responding to the figures, a government spokesman told the paper: “since October 2016 a large number of reports have been received… the majority of which are still under investigation.”

Despite the definite 2017 figure of 10,597, it is not clear how many migrants this relates to, as each individual may have theoretically been reported to the security services more than once. There are also no statistics accompanying these which tell how many of the reports were found to have merit, and how many were unfounded.

This lack of supplementary information is a problem, said senior FDP MP Stephan Thomae, who told the paper: “The Federal Government has to investigate the question of whether there is something behind the increased figures… If the BfV does not even have a statistic about which tip-offs prove to be justified or baseless, the question arises whether the incoming clues are even processed or just [floating around].”

‘Fake News’ BBC Claimed Trump Said War is Coming With Iran

The BBC has belatedly apologised after claiming U.S. President Donald J. Trump said “war will follow” with Iran after imposing sanctions on the Islamist dictatorship.

The President also used Tuesday’s speech at the UN to declare: “In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country.”

EU Court Rules Politicians’ Expenses Can Be Hidden from Public to Protect Their ‘Privacy’ and ‘Integrity’

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled that the expenses of Members of the European Parliament can be kept secret, to protect their “privacy” and “integrity”.

On top of their regular salary, MEPs receive a €4,416 “general expenditure allowance” every month to cover office expenses, and a so-called “subsistence” allowance of €313 a day to cover accommodation and living expenses.

Unlike with travel expenses — which MEPs can also claim, first class — they are not required to provide any invoices or receipts in order to receive these allowances.

Investigative journalists who believed this money was not being used as intended — after apparently uncovering 249 “ghost offices” for which no address was disclosed or where MEPs did not actually appear to be operating — lodged a Freedom of Information request with the European Parliament to try and uncover where it was going, but it was refused.

Efforts to have this refusal overturned have now foundered in the General Court of the CJEU, which has agreed that the European Parliament was entitled to keep the expenses secret, because “[EU] institutions must refuse access to a document where disclosure would undermine the protection of privacy and the integrity of the individual”.

The EU court claimed the journalists had “failed to show how the transfer of personal data at issue is necessary to ensure an adequate review of the expenditure incurred by MEPs to fulfil their mandate”, adding that “the wish to institute public debate cannot suffice to show the need for the transfer of personal data”.

The ruling concluded, finally, that the journalists had not demonstrated that publishing the information would be an “appropriate and proportionate” response.

Some MEPs claimed to be disappointed with the decision, with Finnish leftist Heidi Hautala lamenting that the “Secrecy around MEPs’ expenses only damages the image of the European Parliament and emboldens eurosceptics”.

Her claim that “The majority of MEPs agree on the need for more transparency around their own expenses, but the bureau of the Parliament and President [Antonio] Tajani refuse to act” rings slightly hollow, however — as MEPs could be publishing more details of their expenses voluntarily, and a majority do not appear to be doing so.
