Public Service Announcement about the upcoming Integrated Public Alert Warning System (IPAWS) Emergency Alert System (EAS)/Weather Emergency Alert (WEA) national test on October 3, 2018. [Transcript:] The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), partnering with the Federal Communication Commission, will have a national test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) with radio, TV, cable stations, and wireless carriers at 2:20PM EDT on October 3, 2018. The WEA will be available for 30 minutes while the cell towers broadcasts the national test message. Cell phones that are turned on and near an active cell tower will be able to receive the test message. Your phone should only receive the test message once. Both EAS and WEA test messages will start with “THIS IS A TEST” and end with “No action is needed.” Public safety officials need to make sure when an emergency or disaster happens, they have a process and system that will send out important alerts and warnings to the public. Testing the public alert and warning system once in a while is a way for us to make sure the infrastructure for broadcasting a national message is ready and able to send the message successfully, and help us decide what improvements we may need to make.

Perez’s statement comes as the DNC remains evasive about a domestic abuse allegation against Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, the deputy chair of the DNC.

Palo Alto University professor Christine Blasey Ford accused Kavanaugh on Sunday of drunkenly trying to force himself on her at a party when they were in high school — an allegation Kavanaugh has denied.

Ford’s public accusation came two days after The New Yorker reported the substance of her claim but did not name her as the accuser.

“This is a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land & this serious allegation must be investigated thoroughly,” Perez said in a statement posted to Twitter.

“The American people deserve answers, not a vote that is rammed through by Republicans. There is too much at stake,” Perez added. His statement came after an earlier version of this article noted the DNC’s silence on the Kavanaugh allegation.

The allegation against Kavanaugh puts the DNC in an awkward position, as Perez has avoided saying whether he believes Ellison or Ellison’s accuser.

Ellison is accused of physically and emotionally abusing his ex-girlfriend, Karen Monahan. Like Kavanaugh, Ellison denied the accusation against him. (RELATED: Keith Ellison To Accuser: ‘We Don’t Have To Destroy Each Other’)

The DNC announced on Aug. 14 — just hours before Ellison won the Democratic nomination for Minnesota attorney general — that it would be “reviewing” the Ellison accusation.

But the committee has yet to announce the results of its review and Perez has since deferred to an investigation by the party’s Minnesota arm, the Democratic Farmer-Labor party (DFL).

The DNC has aggressively advocated against Kavanaugh’s confirmation but steered clear of the sexual misconduct accusation until Perez’s tweet.

DNC deputy communications chair Sabrina Singh did not respond to repeated requests for comment on the Kavanaugh allegation.

Like the DNC, the DFL has remained elusive about the details of its Ellison investigation — for example, who exactly is running the investigation, how they’re conducting it and what the status of the probe is.

DFL communications director Ellen Perrault did not return repeated requests for comment on the status of the DFL investigation.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a socialist independent widely expected to run for president as a Democrat in 2020, called on the Senate to postpone voting on Kavanaugh’s confirmation until a full investigation has been completed.

“The allegation from Professor Christine Blasey Ford is a serious one that deserves a full investigation. Neither the Judiciary Committee nor the full Senate should vote on Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court until that takes place,” Sanders wrote on Twitter.

Sanders’ quickness to lend credibility to the accusation against Kavanaugh makes for a clear contrast with his treatment of the accusation against Ellison, one of the senator’s closest political allies.

Sanders said he has “nothing” to say about the Ellison allegation when asked on Aug. 16 and has remained tight-lipped on the issue since then.

The Democratic push to postpone Kavanaugh’s confirmation comes less than two months before the 2018 midterm elections.

Democrats have about a one-in-three chance of retaking the Senate and are strong favorites to retake the House of Representatives in November, according to FiveThirtyEight.

How Dianne Feinstein's Antics Over Kavanaugh Sexual Abuse Allegations Are Harming The #MeToo Movement

If you were to craft a narrative by which to undercut the #MeToo movement, it would be hard to do it better than Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). The #MeToo movement is built on the credibility of the stories told by women who allege sexual abuse and misconduct. That credibility rests hand-in-hand with an eagerness to probe into such allegations – which is why we’ve spent so much time lauding Ronan Farrow of The New Yorker for doing just that.

But the #MeToo movement cannot survive if it is just a series of allegations designed to shield the truth from scrutiny. And that’s precisely what Dianne Feinstein has done here, and continues to do.

According to The Washington Post, Christine Blasey Ford sent a letter to Senator Feinstein on July 30, 2018. She requested in the letter that she be kept anonymous. But Feinstein didn’t forward the letter to the FBI; she didn’t show it to her Democratic Senate colleagues; she didn’t raise the question with Kavanaugh, even in closed session. She did nothing with the letter until after Kavanaugh’s testimony, at which point she dumped news of it in public, forcing Ford to come forward with the actual letter.

All of which doesn’t speak to the credibility of the accuser. It looks like a partisan smear. And today, that partisan smear got even more partisan when Feinstein refused to help set up calls between senators and Ford. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) explained:

Anyone who comes forward as Dr. Ford has deserves to be heard, so I will continue working on a way to hear her out in an appropriate, precedented and respectful manner. The standard procedure for updates to any nominee’s background investigation file is to conduct separate follow-up calls with relevant parties. In this case, that would entail phone calls with at least Judge Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford. Consistent with that practice, I asked Senator Feinstein’s office yesterday to join me in scheduling these follow-ups. Thus far, they have refused… Unfortunately, committee Republicans have only known this person's identity from news reports for less than 24 hours and known about her allegations for less than a week. Senator Feinstein, on the other hand, has had this information for many weeks and deprived her colleagues of the information necessary to do our jobs. The Minority withheld even the anonymous allegations for six weeks, only to later decide that they were serious enough to investigate on the eve of the committee vote, after the vetting process had been completed. It’s deeply disturbing that the existence of these allegations were leaked in a way that seemed to preclude Dr. Ford’s confidentiality. Over my nearly four decades in the Senate I have worked diligently to protect whistleblowers and get to the bottom of any issue. Dr. Ford’s attorney could have approached my office, while keeping her client confidential and anonymous, so that these allegations could be thoroughly investigated. Nevertheless, we are working diligently to get to the bottom of these claims.

This is amazing stuff. It essentially argues that Feinstein is a political show horse, and is trotting out an alleged victim in order to stop Kavanaugh’s ascension. That’s disgusting, and what’s worse, it utterly undermines the credibility of women telling their stories. False allegations undermine #MeToo; so do deliberately-timed, unverifiable allegations carefully protected from scrutiny. Feinstein knows that. But presumably, she doesn’t care, because she would prefer to be popular with her left-wing base – which includes many members of the #MeToo movement too shortsighted to see the impact of such antics.
