Drones hit Russia’s Samara oil hub that blends Urals export crude—first strike there since 11 October

Ukraine’s General Staff says the station blends a crude grade that makes up as much as half of Russia’s oil exports.

Drones hit Transneft’s Samara oil pumping and blending station near the village of Prosvet in Russia’s Samara Oblast overnight on 2 November, Ukrainian defense-news outlet Militarnyi reported. It was at least the fifth attack on the site since 2 October.

In September, US President Donald Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to stop hitting refineries, saying there were “plenty of other targets.” If that request is the line, a pumping and blending hub like Samara falls outside it. Yet it handles the crude Russia exports.

As of midday on 2 November, Ukraine had not claimed the strike. On 31 October, Ukrainian officials told the Kyiv Independent that Kyiv had never agreed to halt refinery strikes.

The station was last hit on 11 October, the day Trump announced an “energy ceasefire.” On 27 October, Zelenskyy said Kyiv had stopped hitting refineries for 72 hours after Trump’s announcement, at Washington’s request.

Then, on 30 October, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said that attacks on Russian refineries had resumed after a break. Kyiv has long said it would stop such strikes if Russia stopped hitting Ukraine’s energy system.

Air-raid alerts sounded in the region at 23:19 Kyiv time on 1 November. About an hour later, Russia’s aviation agency restricted flights at Samara’s Kurumoch airport. NASA’s FIRMS satellite fire tracker then logged a heat anomaly at the station before the 06:56 all-clear, Militarnyi said.

Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+ posted video of the blaze. Russian outlet The Insider confirmed the fire on FIRMS maps. Russian Telegram channel Astra wrote that the station was probably attacked, citing black smoke from the direction of the tank farm.

Samara Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev claimed a Ukrainian air attack on the region but named no targets.

Trunk pipelines bring crude to the station from Tatarstan, Western Siberia, and other Russian oil-producing regions. There, oils with different sulfur content are blended into Urals, Russia’s main export grade, Militarnyi wrote.

Ukraine’s General Staff says Urals makes up as much as 50% of Russia’s oil exports. It also says its 2 October strike damaged 11 tanks of 20,000 cubic meters and three of 50,000 cubic meters.

Drone Strike Kills Two Civilians in North Darfur

November 3, 2026

According to Allafrica, a drone strike killed two civilians after hitting a commercial vehicle carrying passengers and goods in Al Malha locality, North Darfur, on November 1.

Darfur Network for Human Rights field monitors reported the incident, shared supporting evidence and confirmed the identities of the two people killed.

The strike occurred in Wadi Majrur near Al Hara, about 210 kilometres northeast of El Fasher. DNHR monitors identified the victims as trader Mohammed Musa Bakheet Takras and driver Ali Ismail Abkar.

Available accounts placed the strike at about 2 p.m. Sudan time, as the vehicle was carrying civilians towards a weekly market.

Reports also referred to other unidentified victims, though their condition and any additional casualties had not been confirmed.

Local accounts attributed the strike to the Sudanese Armed Forces, but DNHR said information confirmed by its monitors did not independently establish who operated the drone.

Al Malha, near the Libyan border, is under the control of the Rapid Support Forces.

DNHR said the incident highlighted risks to civilian travel, commerce and access to essential goods in Darfur. It called on the SAF to respond to accounts linking its forces to the strike and clarify whether it conducted an operation in the area.

The group also urged all parties to protect civilian movement and commercial transport, while saying that establishing the full casualty toll and ensuring medical care for injured people remained priorities.

The report placed the attack in a wider context of civilian harm from drone warfare in Sudan.

The UN Human Rights Office said drone strikes killed more than 1,000 civilians between January and May 2026, while documenting at least 16 strikes on health facilities and 33 attacks on markets during that period.

DNHR noted that international humanitarian law requires parties to distinguish civilians and civilian objects from military objectives and take feasible precautions to reduce civilian harm.

Ericsson is bringing drone detection to mobile networks, analyzing radio signal reflections to identify and track low-altitude objects.

The telecoms infrastructure maker says its Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) tech adds detection to existing mobile networks, closing a security gap in tracking low-flying, fast-moving objects such as drones.

Following tests over the past few months, Ericsson says it will introduce the tech commercially in phases. Small-scale, sensing-only pilots with selected customers will start in 2027, followed by broader deployments from 2028.

CCS Insight research director Ian Fogg, said told The Register:

"While sensing can be used for other things — like tracking boats in a port, traffic patterns or weather conditions — drone detection [in civilian areas] is the most pressing need which cannot easily be solved using other technologies.

"Mobile networks are useful as drone detection solutions because their antennas are already covering low elevations, close to ground level where drones often fly, unlike traditional radar."

Although it is possible to use 5G networks for sensing, a standards-based 6G method could improve precision by letting different suppliers' base stations

"interoperate", alongside a mix of client devices, tracking the "smallest and fastest moving drones in difficult environments," Fogg added.

Small, low-cost drones have emerged as a persistent threat, or at the very least a nuisance, closing down airports due to safety concerns - the latest incident was at Jersey Airport over the Halloween weekend.

Drone activity has also been on the increase near to military bases and other sensitive sites.

Dedicated sensor systems were deployed to cover sensitive sites, and in the UK, military personnel have now been granted the authority to neutralize any unwanted flying intruders.

Scaling detection across larger areas, however, is more challenging, Ericsson said.

Using sensing-enabled 5G radios, edge computing and signal processing, a cell deployment can detect objects and track them across the coverage area, complementing radar and other sensors rather than replacing them.

Ericsson says the tech works by having multiple perspectives from a number of cell tower radio sites. When one transmits a signal, it reflects off the drone and is picked up by multiple receiving sites.

The network then analyses the reflected signals to locate the drone and track it.

ISAC requires sensing-capable radio hardware, dedicated compute resources, and software, says Ericsson. The radios have to meet specific Massive MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out) antenna and spectrum requirements.

AT&T tested ISAC at trials in Arlington, Texas, and with Erillisverkot, a state-owned special purpose company responsible for national critical communications in Finland.

In both cases, the tech demonstrated it was able to detect multiple drones and track their movements, according to Ericsson.

Data from ISAC - we're told - can be securely shared through standardized interfaces with authorized external systems, including security and command and control systems.
