EXCLUSIVE — CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss faced "significant resistance" from staff at Thursday's 9 a.m. meeting about the growing Alaska ballot controversy, network insiders told Fox News Digital.
This is a scandal," Weiss declared to staff.
According to multiple sources on the call, several CBS News staffers pushed back at Weiss' enthusiasm over the bombshell New York Times report alleging Democrats schemed to find a Dan Sullivan to run against incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, in hopes of aiding Democratic opponent Mary Peltola.
Many on the call shrugged it off as routine politics and said Republicans have also engaged in similar scheming.
When Weiss asked for other examples of ballot confusion, "Face the Nation" moderator Margaret Brennan pointed to New Hampshire Senate candidate John Sununu, suggesting that midterm voters might confuse him with his brother, former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu.
CBS News political correspondent Ed O'Keefe also insisted that such tactics are nothing new. Earlier that morning, during his appearance on "CBS Mornings," O'Keefe stressed to viewers that what happened in Alaska "could be a dirty trick, but it's not illegal," adding that "this has happened before, kind of." He pointed to the 2016 Alaska Senate race when former Anchorage mayor Dan Sullivan — no relation to the U.S. Senator of the same name — briefly ran against incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the GOP primary, hoping "name recognition" of the other sitting senator would help his own candidacy.
A separate CBS staffer on the call pushed back against the notion that colleagues like Brennan and O'Keefe were trying to downplay the scandal, telling Fox News Digital they were providing context to the story being discussed…

At this point it’s not funny how this happens. In reality those who follow DC events will note this is almost an exact replay of earlier Lawfare battles surrounding the FISA warrant public release. Same characters, same arguments, same players, same corrupt intents. [Redacted DOJ Filing Here]
In 2017/2018 the issue was corrupt DC interests arguing for the public release of a top secret classified document, the title-1 FISA surveillance warrant used against Carter Page. The warrant was already leaked to the media on March 17, 2017, when the lawfare assembly later wanted to exploit it.
In the 2026 re-run, the issue surrounds the DHS/HSI search warrant executed against Ilhan Omar. The DOJ wants to keep it sealed until the warrant has been fully executed, implying there are alternative parties who have been requested to provide additional information. The Lawfare group want the search warrant details released to the public now so the allied group can organize and exploit public defenses.
Neither the FISA warrant nor a HSI search warrant had/have ever been released prior to full execution therein. DC Judge James Boasberg, a horrible man of intemperate and corrupt disposition, will now decide the release of the latter.

But the fight over whether to unseal the records is being overseen by Chief Judge James Boasberg of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, an Obama appointee and longtime target of Trump.

Michigan Democrat Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed directly solicited support for his campaign inside Islamic centers whose imams and guest speakers called America the “the House of Shaitan [Satan]” and urged Allah to “take the worst revenge upon” Zionists, according to a review of their videotaped services.
Experts said the video evidence, first uncovered by the Middle East Forum and verified by Just the News, could open the door to potential investigations into the nonprofit status of places of worship and provide a stark reminder to voters in the final days of the 2026 election about El-Sayed's ties to other controversial activists, who include Hasan Piker.
El-Sayed is locked in a close contest with former Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., for Michigan's open Senate seat. The contest is expected to be one of the most competitive of the cycle.
Throughout the contest, El-Sayed has taken flak for his ties to Piker, a prominent Twitch streamer who has said America “deserved” 9/11, among other sensational statements. President Donald Trump has called El-Sayed a “terrorist sympathizer.”
The El-Sayed campaign did not respond to a request for comment from Just the News, and has denied his familial relationships to the Muslim Brotherhood and to radical Islam in general, with supporters such as former President Obama calling the issue "Islamophobic."
In March before the Democratic primary, El-Sayed visited the Islamic Center of Detroit, a nonprofit organization that offers both Muslim religious services and engages in charity work in the community.
El-Sayed was welcomed to the pulpit by one of the mosque’s leaders during a Ramadan prayer service, during which he solicited signatures from the congregation so that he could qualify for the Michigan Democratic primary, according to a recording reviewed by Just the News.
The host introduced El-Sayed as “our beloved brother Dr. Abdulrahman,” using his full first name, and El-Sayed spoke to the room in a livestreamed meeting and asked the congregation for their support.
Meeting ended with call for God to take “revenge” upon the Zionists
“I have to get on the ballot to be able to get your vote, inshallah [God willing]. So my team is here in the back. You’ll see us on the outside […] If you’re a registered voter in the state of Michigan, we need your signature to get on the ballot, so I ask that you’ll give us a signature,” El-Sayed told the congregation. “Please don’t leave here without doing that.”
Later in the same Ramadan livestream, a leader reads the closing supplication in Arabic, which called for God to take “revenge” upon the Zionists and to foil their plans. It is not clear whether El-Sayed was still in attendance when this closing prayer was sung.
“O our Lord, the Zionists have spread corruption in the land. Your forbearance has deceived them, so show them Your power, O Compeller. They killed our brothers and sisters, so take the worst revenge upon them,” the leader sang, according to the video.
“Lie in wait for them, our Lord. Raise no banner for them in the lands of the Muslims […] and foil their plans in every time and place,” he continued.
The Arabic language prayer was translated independently by the Middle East Forum and confirmed by Just the News using Google’s translation application.
The Islamic Center of Detroit did not respond to a message submitted to its online contact portal.
Lawmaker, experts raise legal concerns over charity laws
El-Sayed's whistle-stop political tour through Muslim nonprofits is already raising legal questions.
Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas, asked the IRS late last month to investigate one Michigan nonprofit that hosted a fundraiser for El-Sayed. “The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) reportedly engaged in prohibited activity on behalf of Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed,” Self wrote on X . “I sent a letter to @SecScottBessent requesting the IRS investigate and complete a full review of ISNA’s tax-exempt status."
J. Christian Adams, a former top Justice Department civil rights and elections lawyer who now runs the Public Interest Legal Foundation, told Just the News that the El-Sayed video clips raise serious legal issues since religious organizations that enjoy 501(c)3 tax-exempt status are prohibited from directly advocating the election or defeat of federal candidates.

Gregg Roman, the executive director of the Middle East Forum, told Just the News his group reviewed video footage from three dozen Muslim mosques and centers in Michigan and found 938 "extremist" statements. He said some of the groups that hosted such speakers also received taxpayer funds.

Islamic Center of Detroit speaker labeled America ‘the House of [Satan]’ and said country was founded on Islamic tradition
Rhetoric calling on “Allah” to commit violence against Zionist Jews and likewise praising terrorists appeared other times at the Islamic Center of Detroit, which hosted El-Sayed and cooperated with his campaign drive.
For example, in March 2024, less than a year after the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel that launched a war in Gaza, a religious leader said there, “O Allah, grant victory to your soldiers, the mujahideen, everywhere. O Allah, grant victory to our oppressed brothers in Gaza,” according to a translation provided by the Middle East Forum.
That same month, leaders of the Islamic Center called on “Allah” to “count [the Zionist aggressors] one by one and kill them all, scattering them, and leave not one of them” and “Tear them apart with every tearing with which You have torn Your enemies, in support of Your allies.” The leaders of that same center would later host El-Sayed, and allow him to use the congregation to collect signatures to get on the Democratic ballot.
In January 2025, Dr. Zulfiqar Shah, an Islamic scholar, told the congregation that as Muslims in the United States they were living in the “House of Shaitan,” or House of Satan.
“So my respected brothers and sisters, I request you, as Muslims living here in America, in the house of Shaitan […]” Dr. Shah said, before urging them to “reclaim the narrative” and show how the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were ultimately based on Islamic tradition.
Shah is no stranger to controversy. In 2009, the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT) reported that in 2001 Shah — then president of the Islamic Circle of North America – led a chant at its annual conference saying "Our way, our way, is jihad, jihad," and added that Shah advocated violence in Kashmir. A search by Just the News does not disclose any retraction or correction to that IPT article.
“I’m expecting some rough time during the next four years, so it is important for us to be able and ready to say no, this is not a Christian country, this was not built by the judeo-christian tradition. It was built actually against it. It was built upon the Islamic ideology,” Shah added.
MECCA hosted El-Sayed after its founder said "the Zionists are in full control" of U.S. government
Eleven days before the primary, the imam of another Michigan Islamic center used his Friday sermon to urge worshipers to send El-Sayed to the Senate.
Sayed Saleh Qazwini founded the Muslim Educational Community Center of America (MECCA), a tax-exempt nonprofit in Canton, in 2022. On July 24, he told the congregation that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and “the Zionists” control American politics, then turned to the Senate race, according to the center’s livestream.
“Who was it that pushed for the war with Iraq? Who was it that pushed for the war with Libya? Who is it that pushed for the wars all over the Middle East? AIPAC and the Zionists that are in full control of the government here. Full control of the government here,” Qazwini said.

I have further determined that the material proposed for redaction by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a cover letter dated January 17, 2021, remains classified.
My decision to declassify the materials described above does not extend to materials that must be protected from disclosure pursuant to orders of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and does not require the disclosure of certain personally identifiable information or any other materials that must be protected from disclosure under applicable law.

MECCA did not respond to an email request for comment from Just the News.
Qazwini reminded his congregation about elections at Friday prayers on Aug. 7, three days after El-Sayed won the primary by fewer than 14,000 votes. He told the congregation that AIPAC had spent “70 to 80 million” on the primary “just so Abdul El-Sayed does not get elected,” and tied that spending to Israel’s wars, according to the center’s livestream.
“Today Israel and the Zionists, they killed hundreds and thousands of children. They bombed hundreds and thousands of homes, and that is something that is not popular. And you can’t come and pay people money to view something unpopular as popular,” the imam said.
Muslim religious leaders invoked Gaza to stump for El-Sayed
“This is just the primary. There is the general election, and now they’re probably going to be spending much more,” Qazwini added. “But as long as people are alert, as long as people are awake, as long as people participate in the election, people go out and vote and exercise their right to vote, then they will not be able to steal the election.”
El-Sayed also appeared alongside Qazwini in August at a campaign-season event at Christ Episcopal Church in Dearborn, Michigan.
Prayers asking God to punish Jews and “Zionists” come up again and again at MECCA’s services, according to a catalog of 27 statements the Middle East Forum compiled from the center’s own videos.
In July 2024, an imam closed a sermon by praying for “our brothers, the mujahideen, in Gaza and in southern Lebanon, in Yemen, in Iraq.” Those are the fronts where Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis and Iran-backed Iraqi militias were fighting Israel at the time.
El-Sayed associate prays in public: "O Allah, take the worst vengeance upon the Jews"
The State Department designates Hamas and Hezbollah as foreign terrorist organizations, and it redesignated the Houthis in 2025.
“O Allah, send down Your anger, Your vengeance, and Your punishment upon the Jews, upon these criminal Zionists. O Allah, take the worst vengeance upon them, O Allah,” the cleric said, according to a translation provided by the Middle East Forum.
The same imam prayed in similar terms in June 2026, less than two months before the primary: “O Allah, take revenge on Israel and those who help it. O Allah, send down upon them Your wrath and punishment this very hour.”
Qazwini labeled the late supreme leader of Iran a martyr. On March 1, 2026, he led the congregation in a prayer for the soul of Iran’s supreme leader, saying that “Sayyid al-Khamenei […] became a shaheed [martyr] in the way of Allah.

There Are 15,000 Ant Species on Earth. Blame the Asteroid That Killed the Dinosaurs

Our planet is covered in ants. Researchers now say their ascendance escalated 66 million years ago, powered by retrovirus-like “jumping genes.”
People typically think of the city-sized Chicxulub asteroid’s devastating collision with North America 66 million years ago as simply a mass extinction event—which, of course, it was for dinosaurs.
But a growing body of research is making the case that the pall of death and darkness left worldwide in Chicxulub’s wake proved to be a boon not just for tinier scurrying mammals but also for giant fungi, exotic deep-sea lifeforms, and now the sprawling colonization of Earth by ant kind.
Today, over 15,000 species of ants dot the globe, their queens ruling over a vast empire hidden underground (and also within dead trees or other suitable venues).
Evolutionary biologists and genomics researchers, collaborating between Germany, China, and Denmark, have now identified several independent bursts in ant species’ diversification dating back to the early Paleogene just after Chicxulub hit.
Their new study attributes ants’ biodiversity boom to retrovirus-like transposable elements of DNA, sometimes called “jumping genes.”
“The asteroid impact had dramatic consequences for the environment,” the study’s lead author, Lukas Schrader, a professor of molecular evolutionary biology at Germany’s University of Münster, said in a statement.
“We have now found the genomic mechanism that connects these ecological upheavals to the subsequent rapid diversification of the ants: transposable elements.”

Scientists used to think of transposable elements (TEs) as effectively “genomic parasites,” given this DNA’s tendency to spread from host to host, seemingly as an end unto itself, without offering any clear evolutionary advantages.
Some TEs, studies have shown, are even suspected of contributing to diseases themselves, including some cancers and neurological disorders.
But biologists have more recently detected comparable spikes in species diversification, sometimes with the promise of new ecological niches or improved hardiness, in the lineages of various animals, including primates and bats.
One 2021 study on sub-Saharan Africa’s urban mosquito species Anopheles coluzzii, for example, discovered that TEs had helped these little bloodsuckers protect themselves against insecticides.
“I think we’re going to see more and more cases where TEs help explain cases of rapid adaptive changes,” as Schrader told The Scientist back in 2022, during an earlier phase of his research into how these viral genes benefit ants, meaning all insects in the family Formicidae.
Schrader and his co-authors cross-compared the genomes of 163 ant species sampled from a dozen of the 16 Formicidae subfamilies known to still exist today.
This reconstruction of these species’ evolutionary history helped generate something like a timeline of major jumping gene activity across the past 100 million years.
It revealed that, among other features, TEs helped spur the generation of new odorant receptors (ORs) and gustatory receptors (GRs) critical to ants’ use of chemicals to communicate and perceive their surroundings.
“Thus, TEs likely provided the raw genetic material facilitating diversification, while the ecological opportunities generated by the extinction event determined how this variation could become consequential,” Schrader’s team explained last month in the journal Science Advances.
Ant history
Beyond the boost that TEs provided to ant species back during the Paleogene, these virus-like genes have also continued to boost ants’ evolutionary resilience in the modern era.
Schrader’s work with his colleagues at the University of Münster’s Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity, as well as with their collaborators abroad, found that those ant lineages they traced with the highest number of jumping genes also tended to produce a more diverse number of descendant species today.
Schrader’s team acknowledged that there are still some unknown factors, including the possibility that some extinct species of ants may have “exhibited different patterns of TE activity,” which might have altered this study’s assessment of how jumping genes have helped ants adapt.
There’s also the mystery of ant kind’s origins before this study’s 100-million-year framework: “[We] cannot exclude the possibility of yet unknown TE bursts having affected the earliest history of ant diversification,” the researchers said.

By bringing together fatality management specialists, horizontal construction engineers, preventive medicine teams, and chaplains, the exercise sought to determine if modern earthmoving equipment can meet the demanding timeline requirements of a mass-casualty environment. Beyond sheer speed, a primary objective of the exercise was to verify that these temporary interment methods successfully preserve remains in an intact state, ensuring that subsequent forensic and anthropological teams can safely disinter, identify, and ultimately repatriate every fallen Soldier once hostilities cease.

Oct 30 (Reuters) – Pentagon officials have in recent weeks asked several NATO countries to tone down their rhetoric regarding the threat posed by Russia, arguing that some statements by European leaders and officials have undermined continental security, four people familiar with the matter said.
Among the nations that have received messages urging them to keep public statements in check are Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity. It was not clear if the messages, which were delivered in bilateral meetings, were conveyed to other European governments.
The US requests come as the Trump administration restarts an effort to press for a negotiated end to the full-scale war in Ukraine, now well into its fifth year. The latest push has blended incentives for Russia – including sanctions relief – with pressure on Ukraine to halt its attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.

The American Color Revolution
Much has been said on X about Data Republican’s drop of an impending color revolution being plotted by leftist agitators, former USAID administrators, and former flag officers of the U.S. Military. I ask you to read her thread for yourself, but a quick rundown of the events is thus;
On March 25, 2026, a Zoom call was held that outlaid the plot against the government. This call was recorded and Data Republican published it in a series of X posts starting on October 19.
The outcome of the 2026 midterms appears to be irrelevant; If the Democrats win one or both chambers of congress, they will declare the color revolution, “the will of the people.” If they lose, they will declare Trump must have cheated.
Nationwide violent protests are planned. Multiple leftist organizations are planning riots in multiple U.S. cities to cause so much unrest and destruction President Trump is forced to invoke the Insurrection Act and call in the military to restore order.
Multiple red lines or triggering events were discussed. As DR outlines in her post on the 19th:
Any effective election fraud investigation
If a new (D) congressmember is delayed being sworn in on Jan 3 due to accusations of cheating
If the blue wave fails to materialize and Republicans win too many elections
If Trump moves against the activist judges
If Trump invokes the insurrection act against violent protestors
Once one of these red lines is crossed, Multiple blue state governors will declare the federal government to be illegitimate, and attempt to call a new constitutional convention and create a new United States government. This will not follow the legal Article V process of calling a convention where 2/3 of the states’ legislatures call for the meeting and vote on constitutional amendments. This will be a handful of blue states trying to forge a communist utopia while in open defiance of federal authority and constitutional law.
We don’t know how many governors are involved, but it has been reported that J.B. Pritzker of Illinois and Gavin Newsom of California have expressed interest.
Balkanization of the United States is an acceptable outcome; the conspirators of this plot don’t necessarily want or need a united Communist government in the USA, multiple micro nations where U.S. states once stood is fine with them.

Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman has been named in a key leadership role at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), days after winning the prestigious Stephen Hawking Medal.
Wiseman has been appointed as the deputy director, who will be responsible for the strategic leadership, stewardship, and continuous improvement of laboratory operations.
He has also assumed the role of an associate vice president at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and will begin his duties on November 30, 2026.
Notably, Wiseman and Artemis II Pilot Victor Glover have moved away from active spaceflight to an emeritus status to help future astronauts prepare for upcoming missions.

Wiseman is a former U.S. Navy Captain who led the Artemis II mission that launched on April 1.
With Glover and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, he journeyed 695,081 miles during the lunar flyby—traveling farther from Earth than any humans in history and breaking the distance record set by the Apollo 13 crew in 1970.
He joined NASA’s astronaut corps in 2009 and flew on his first space mission in 2014, serving as a flight engineer aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for Expedition 41 and spending 165 days in space.
Artemis II was his second spaceflight, in which he spent nearly 10 days flying around the Moon and back. Wiseman also once lived in a habitat on the ocean floor for eight days in 2016 while commanding NASA’s 21st Extreme Environment Mission Operations expedition.
“I’ve explored the furthest reaches of what a human can explore at NASA — and there were truly no words in the English vocabulary to describe seeing the Sun disappear behind the Moon from deep space.
But that experience was really the jumping off point to go do the impossible things that Caltech and JPL dream, dare together, and do for NASA and the nation,” Wiseman said after his appointment.
This comes just days after he won the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication at the Starmus VIII festival alongside his crewmates Glover, Hansen, and Koch. Apart from Wiseman, Koch has also taken on a key leadership role at NASA.
Earlier this month, she was announced as the acting deputy chief engineer at the agency to fill in for the incumbent Katherine Van Hooser. Koch will begin her service on November 1, and she will oversee the engineering and technical aspects of the agency's projects and programs.

NASA’s Voyager 1 Conserves Power, Resolves Brief Communications Pause

NASA’s Voyager team is celebrating two recent developments with the Voyager 1 spacecraft: In September, they successfully completed a months-long effort to stretch the spacecraft’s diminishing power supply.
Then, on Oct. 20, an unexpected loss of communication with the spacecraft resolved itself after 48 hours, before the team sent commands to the spacecraft to troubleshoot the issue.
In early September, engineers successfully turned off three devices on the Voyager 1 spacecraft and substituted them with three lower-power alternatives.
Nicknamed the “Big Bang,” the energy-saving effort was completed about six weeks after the mission team performed the same swap on Voyager 2. The Big Bang will enable Voyager 1’s remaining science instruments to operate longer than previously anticipated.
The Voyagers get their power from radioisotope thermoelectric generators, which convert heat from decaying plutonium into electricity.
With the plutonium supply continually depleting, both probes lose about 4 watts of power each year. Almost a half-century since Voyager launched, the spacecraft power margins have grown thin, requiring the team to conserve energy by shutting off nonessential devices and systems.
The Big Bang was unique because it required the swaps to occur simultaneously.
The six devices help keep the spacecraft warm enough to operate in the frigid expanse of space, and only by swapping all three could the team both reduce the amount of power Voyager 1 uses and ensure that heat is properly distributed on the spacecraft.

In recent years, the dwindling power supply has forced the team to turn off two science instruments. The mission launched in 1977 with 10 dedicated science instruments, some of which were turned off after the spacecraft’s planetary encounters.
Some instruments were left on to study the outer region of the heliosphere, a bubble of particles and magnetic fields created by the Sun.
Now, the Voyagers are traveling through interstellar space, the area outside the heliosphere, and are the only spacecraft to ever study this region directly.
Without performing the Big Bang, the mission would have needed to turn off another instrument on Voyager 1 as early as summer 2027.
Brief signal loss
But between now and summer 2027, the team is at the ready for more surprises like the one they recently encountered when they briefly lost contact with Voyager 1 on Oct. 18 and 19.
NASA’s Deep Space Network — large antennas at three facilities around the globe used to communicate with spacecraft at the Moon and beyond — was unable to detect a radio signal from the probe, which is 16 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth, during two scheduled communications attempts, 24 hours apart. The spacecraft’s signal reappeared 24 hours later, on Oct. 20, and the team has maintained communication with it since then.
Engineers still are investigating what caused the communication loss. The team has so far determined that one group of thrusters went offline and their backups turned on.
Such a swap is programmed to occur automatically if the spacecraft computers detect something amiss with the active thrusters.
This automatic response is known as fault protection and directs the spacecraft to put itself in a safe, or stable, configuration and pause normal operations, giving engineers time to diagnose the issue and take action.
“This is the first time we’ve seen the spacecraft do something like this, but we are also at a point in the mission where we have to expect the unexpected,” said Kareem Badaruddin, Voyager mission manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.
“We’re relieved to be back in contact with Voyager 1 and are eager to understand what happened.”
Historic milestone
As the investigation continues, Voyager 1 is speeding at 38,000 mph (61,155 kph) toward a major milestone: On Nov. 18, the spacecraft that has traveled farther than any other human-made object will be 16.09 billion miles (25.89 billion kilometers) from Earth — the equivalent of one light-day, or the distance that light can travel in one day. That means that the radio waves used to communicate with the probe take 24 hours to reach it, and the radio waves carrying the spacecraft’s return message take another 24 hours.
“If you want to say ‘hello’ to Voyager, you send your message and then you go home and you wait two days before you finally get a response,” said Suzanne Dodd, Voyager project manager at JPL.
The spacecraft will not detect any change in its environment when it passes one light-day, nor will anything change aboard the spacecraft.
The milestone’s significance is in its demonstration of the vastness of the universe and the endurance of humanity’s most distant explorer.

Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kans., this week said that President Donald Trump's decision to cancel a planned rally in Kansas this weekend was the result of his strong polling performance.
Marshall is facing an unexpectedly close race for reelection in a typically red state. His contest against Democratic nominee Adam Hamilton is set for Tuesday.
Trump abruptly canceled a rally with Marshall in favor of virtual events, which Marshall told reporters was because “I think that I’m doing so well in the polls that he’s got, probably got better places to spend his time."
The party of the president typically loses ground during the midterms, but Trump has sought to defy historical trends and retain control of both chambers. Polling, however, appears skeptical of that prospect.

Ghostly Cat’s Head Nebula Lurks Within Sight of NASA’s Hubble, Webb

Like a spectral form rising out of a cold mist, NASA’s Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes have captured a hauntingly dynamic star-forming scene. It lies within the vast Carina Nebula, a diffuse star-forming region located about 7,500 light-years away from Earth.
The small, select area both telescopes observed is nicknamed the Cat’s Head Nebula because of its resemblance to a cat sitting with its back toward the viewer. The “head” of the cat is turned to the right, revealing a glowing eye.
Though the Cat’s Head Nebula is a temporary scene that will eventually disperse as stars form and evolve over time, the region is packed with information.
Hubble and Webb’s complementary views of the Cat’s Head Nebula are helping astronomers learn more about the elusive, chaotic, and complex process known as star formation.
The distinctive “cat’s head” shape of the nebula was likely sculpted over time by the intense ultraviolet radiation and winds from massive stars in the Carina Nebula.
As this stellar feedback erodes the surrounding gas and dust, denser material within the feline-shaped pillar resists erosion, at least for now.
Hubble’s visible-light view reveals an opaque, dark brown pillar of dust. The cat’s glowing red eye may indicate a young star that is still partially embedded in dust.
A ridge of hazy yellow seems to follow the edge of the filament’s right side. This bright rim is consistent with gas illuminated and ionized by ultraviolet radiation from nearby massive stars, potentially driving a process known as photoevaporation.
The diffuse material surrounding the pillar glows blue and cyan above, shifting to yellow, orange, and red toward the bottom.
Hubble’s filters capture light emitted by oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur, along with starlight scattered by dust. These color variations reveal a complex mix of excited gas, dust, and stellar illumination.
Piercing Through Dust’s Darkness
Webb’s near- and mid-infrared images each offer different pieces of information to help create a more well-rounded understanding of the Cat’s Head Nebula.
While the nebula’s overall structure is similar to the visible-light Hubble image, the filament becomes more transparent, and its complex surface structure becomes discernable in near-infrared light seen by Webb.
On the cat’s left are ghostly wisps of dust and gas, delicate structures exposed to radiation from nearby massive stars.
Webb’s near-infrared view reveals a dense scattering of stars, shown in blue and yellow. Even in infrared light, some stars are still enshrouded in dust to various degrees.
The cat’s eye remains conspicuous. The telescope’s high-resolution imagery even shows faint background galaxies, offering a partial view through our Milky Way galaxy and beyond.

In mid-infrared light, emission from warm dust and carbon-based molecules excited by starlight outlines intricate structures within the nebula.
Changes in local conditions and compositions lead to variations in color and brightness. Delicate globules and strands to the pillar’s left are particularly evident in this mid-infrared view.
To the right of the pillar, a bright light source is shown as yellow in the mid-infrared image.
Likely an infant star embedded in dust, it lies against reddish emission from surrounding material. A narrow filament appears to cross the source, although the image alone cannot establish whether the two are physically related.

A NASA astronaut has publicly said that extraterrestrial life exists during an interview where he warned of a possible military showdown in space.
Winston Scott, who flew on two space shuttle missions in the 1990s, told Jesse Watters Primetime he was confident humans were not the only intelligent life in the cosmos.
'I do believe there is life someplace else out there in the universe. Now, whether or not it’s visiting us here on Earth or not is a topic of discussion. I think E.T. is out there some place,' Scott said.
Scott explained that the math surrounding the search for extraterrestrials overwhelmingly favored their existence, simply because there are billions of planets in the universe – some must have evolved similar to Earth.
'We can’t be the only one that has intelligent life,' he added.
Scott's comments came days after the Pentagon released a new batch of declassified UFO files, including reports from witnesses who claimed they saw beings known as ‘skinwalkers’ and government agents who tracked a mysterious craft over the US.
The astronaut also gave a grim warning about the current state of America's space race with China and Russia, noting that weapons have already been placed in orbit above Earth and may be needed in a war between the world powers.
'We live in a world where we have to be prepared to defend ourselves militarily. We hope we don’t see conflict and combat in space but I would not rule it out,' Scott admitted.
