Sally Yates, whose career in the Department of Justice spanned about three decades, will lead an independent review on how Cornell University responds to sexual harassment, assault and misconduct on campus, the university announced Tuesday.
The decision comes in the wake of national outrage over allegations made by a former Cornell student last month that she was gang-raped and plied with drugs at a fraternity in 2024.
New York Attorney General Letitia James is also investigating the allegation. A spokesperson said staff from the attorney general’s office have “spoken with the Tompkins County District Attorney, Jane Doe’s attorney, and several candidates for outside counsel to support the investigation.”
The independent probe headed by Yates will look into how the university responded to those allegations and whether the school followed its policies and procedures, according to the university.
More broadly, the review will examine Cornell’s policies and practices spanning from prevention to response. It will include how reports are investigated, how disciplinary decisions are handled, and how students are supported, the university said. The investigation will also look into the role and response of campus police, and its coordination with other law enforcement agencies and prosecutors. Yates did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

So on and so forth, pick anything. Is this trying to make you prideful? That is poison.
This can count for LA, video games, TV shows, movies, and especially content that we see online because a lot of people are being used by Satan and by their own flesh they are driven to make stuff that are trying to feed the the desires of the flesh, the evil desires of the flesh because people keep wanting more of it.
People keep wanting to watch it. And we can't succumb to that.
We have to walk by the spirit.
And that's why it's so important to be in the word of God each and every single day and to monitor the content that we do watch for entertainment.
I personally think entertainment is great. I think video games, movies, TV shows, all that stuff, books are good things.
And I know sometimes they can people call them a waste of time, but I think that it's good especially in the age of doom scrolling.
Anything to keep you from doom scrolling.
If you spent all day, especially obviously as long as you meet your obligations and to your loved ones and to your own livelihood, but if you spend a few hours playing a video game, that is not time wasted.
That is time where you got to entertain yourself and it kept you away from doom scrolling on the internet.
But of course you have to make sure that that video game that you're playing isn't causing you to sin either.
So, an example of this is I was reading manga the other day and I loved the story.
I was so into it and then right at the very end of the first book there was a no-no scene.
I'll just say it was a no-no scene and it was relatively gratuitous.
And it made me just feel so icky. I was like, "Ugh, I want to know what happens in this story. It was just one scene, so maybe I can go ahead and buy it."
And then I was like, "No, I just I felt so much conviction in my spirit to just throw it away.
Throw it away. Don't read any more of it.
There is a ton of content out there that we can read that is wholesome, that will make us feel positive, that will make us want to be better people, or that can teach us life lessons, right?
That might show bad things, but not in a gratuitous way that is sinful, right?
But maybe you'll learn a lesson. Like, "Oh, here's Death Note for example.
Here's a lesson on on psychopathy and how that can mess with people."

This is how I see it:

‘Painful to Watch’: Victor Davis Hanson Nukes ‘Highly Emotional’ Tucker Carlson for Questioning If UK ‘Benefitted’ From Defeating Hitler

Victor Davis Hanson can’t believe how far Tucker Carlson has fallen.
The veteran conservative pundit skewered the former Fox News anchor for questioning if the United Kingdom “benefitted” by defeating Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany in World War II, which Carlson had asked during a bizarre interview last week that instantly went viral.
Hanson, on the Tuesday episode of his podcast for The Daily Signal, said Carlson made pathetic and ahistorical points throughout his interview with Jacob Rees-Mogg, a member of the Conservative Party in the UK.
“It was painful to watch,” Hanson said. “Because I used to know Tucker and I liked him — I still like him. But obviously, something’s happened to him.”
Carlson’s interpretation of WWII was “completely wrong” and failed to understand why it was imperative for Winston Churchill to stand up to Hitler, Hanson argued. He also said Carlson routinely botched easily-checkable figures from the war, like how many people died in certain battles, and glossed over how much of a threat Nazi Germany was to the West by 1940.
“Tucker was highly emotional, spewing out all sorts of misinformation,” Hanson said, adding it looked especially bad when compared to the Rees-Mogg’s “sober” delivery.
If you missed it, Carlson asked if fighting the Second World War was worth it for the UK last week.
Here’s a look at the back-and-forth exchange that followed:
REES-MOGG: Hitler would’ve taken as much as he could’ve done, as he was showing.
CARLSON: Well, Hitler said that 15% was once Germany and it was given to Poland at the Treaty of Versailles. That was German territory with Germans in it. That was his case. And by the way, that was true.
REES-MOGG: Except the Polish borders had been cut up by–
CARLSON: I’m certainly not here defending Hitler. I’m just saying the idea that Hitler just randomly rolled into Poland is a lie and everyone believes it because they know nothing about the actual facts. But the truth is, Germany had big pieces of it carved off, including part of Prussia and it was given to this other country. It infuriated the Germans. Maybe it shouldn’t have, but it did. And that was the justification for it. The U.K. had nothing to do with it at all And–
REES-MOGG: Well, we had a treaty of alliance–
CARLSON: –they destroyed their empire and their country fighting this war that they still pretend was a good idea, but it wasn’t.
REES-MOGG: It was fundamental. It was the classic good-versus-evil.
CARLSON: Has the U.K. benefitted from it?
REES-MOGG: We did the right thing.
CARLSON: Is it a better country than it was?
REES-MOGG: To have defeated Hitler? Yes.
CARLSON: So, the U.K. is a better country now? It’s a healthier country now.
REES-MOGG: Otherwise, we’d all be speaking German.
CARLSON: Who cares?
REES-MOGG: I do.
CARLSON: There are a lot of people in Britain who can’t speak English. So, it would be nice to have like, at least a European language spoken in your country.
REES-MOGG: No, I see no advantage speaking German over any other language. We want to speak English, thank you so much.
Hanson said Carlson didn’t understand Britain didn’t have much of a choice — the Nazis would have taken over the island if the UK didn’t fight back. He added Carlson acted childish while debating the topic.
“Almost everything he said in that interview was false,” Hanson said. “Once again, he has these little quips, and then he starts chuckling and trying to make fun of this guy, Rees-Mogg, but he really knew history… I don’t know any fair-minded person that didn’t think that severely damaged Tucker’s reputation. He couldn’t laugh his way, or fudge facts, out of that.”
He continued, “And one of the subtexts, again, if you listen to it very carefully, the subtext is: the Jews, the Jews, the Jews.”
Hanson’s criticism stands out, considering he was one of Carlson’s go-to guests when he was a star at Fox News. But Hanson has been baffled by Carlson’s post-Fox News content,with Hanson saying last week Carlson has “done a lot of strange things” since exiting the channel.

Russia’s emerging Rassvet satellite network – often described as a “Starlink rival” –could provide Moscow’s military with sustainable communications and data to attack any target in Ukraine at will, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has warned.
Speaking to The Economist last week, Schmidt noted that while Ukraine was initially seen as the main innovator in the conflict, Russia had largely closed that gap while pressing its advantage with far greater resources.
Schmidt noted that one of these domains is Russia’s Rassvet satellite project, which he suggested was about a year from maturity. “Once that network is in place, it is more or less unblockable,” he warned, adding that this could let Russian forces “hunt anywhere” inside Ukraine.
The ex-Google CEO also weighed in on the idea of granting Ukraine access to Starlink over Russia, which could allow Kiev to rely on Elon Musk’s satellites to target oil refineries and civilian infrastructure, calling it “really a political decision.”
“It’s really a government decision. And the US government needs to grapple with this question,” he said.
Developed by private Russian aerospace firm Bureau 1440, part of the IKS Holding conglomerate, Rassvet debuted in 2023 with the launch of three experimental satellites. The network is designed to offer speeds of up to 1Gbps with latency below 70 milliseconds and to operate at an orbit of around 800 km – higher than that of Starlink to balance the number of satellites against an increased coverage area.
This year, the company launched a total of 32 satellites, after six experimental spacecraft sent up in 2023 and 2024, with plans to have 292 satellites by some time in 2027.
On Tuesday, the company also unveiled a line of user terminals, some of which claimed speeds of up to 700 Mbps. The Ukrainian outlet Militarny suggested that some of the showcased terminals could eventually be fitted to strike drones.
Russia’s deployment of Rassvet has sparked major concern in Ukraine across the spectrum. In July, satellite communications expert Vladimir Stepanets told Militarny that the first satellite group provided at least two stable “communication windows” over the country daily, each lasting more than an hour.
Ukraine’s military intelligence separately told Janes it had recorded Russian forces using Rassvet communications over Ukraine for “several hours” by late July and warned the system could support real-time reconnaissance and strike-drone operations.
Vladimir Zelensky’s technology adviser, Sergey Beskrestnov, also warned that a fully deployed Rassvet could become a “small catastrophe” for Kiev as it would provide Russia with online control of strike drones and missiles.
Zelensky himself told the Financial Times last week that he had repeatedly asked US President Donald Trump to sanction companies involved in Rassvet development and production while warning that the network could become operational “by the end of this year or early next year.”Trump has not publicly responded to the request.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who now serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council,said that attempts to “block” Rassvet would amount to destroying it and could trigger “full-scale space warfare.”

"Happy New Year!" No, wait, this is not a fireworks display. This image shows Nebula Pa 30, observed with the Gemini North Telescope in Hawai'i. It is likely the remnant of an old supernova explosion: separate historical records by Chinese, Japanese and Arabic astronomers tell of a "guest star" that appeared in the sky for 185 days in the year 1181. It is believed that this bright new point of light came from the supernova that caused the fireworks in Pa 30. Astronomers don't know exactly what happened in this unusual explosion, classified as a Type Iax supernova, but it is thought to be caused by the merger of two white dwarfs. The mysterious central star in the image is extremely hot and produces a strong wind, possibly forming the radial filaments. Look closely at them: those pearl-like knots stringing the filaments are 4 light-days in diameter. Bolivian police arrested Attorney General Roger Mariaca and Santa Cruz regional prosecutor Alberto Zeballos on Wednesday night, two days after the United States revoked their visas and accused them of corruption linked to drug trafficking.

Amazon Delivery Drivers’ Smart Glasses Will Photograph Homes and Passersby
Amazon delivery drivers will soon wear smart glasses that take pictures almost constantly, sending them to the company for analysis by people and an AI system. Bloomberg columnist Dave Lee described the plan on Wednesday.
The glasses will photograph whatever is in view, which includes neighbours and front yards along a delivery route.
The Verge, in a story by Stevie Bonifield, said Bloomberg's reporting puts the total at several thousand captures during a single driver's typical shift. Amazon plans to upload them to an AI platform called Wellspring.
What the Glasses Do
Amazon has said the glasses let drivers scan packages, see walking directions in their line of sight, capture proof of delivery and receive pet alerts, all without using a phone. The company announced them almost a year ago.
The photos are expected to be about the same quality as the quick pictures drivers already take when they leave a package, The Verge reported.
Privacy Protections Amazon Describes
Viraj Chatterjee of Amazon told Bloomberg the company's systems will blur people and license plates before images reach human reviewers. He said Amazon uses the data to improve deliveries and that surveillance was never the aim.
Amazon also confirmed to Bloomberg that law enforcement could obtain the glasses' images with a warrant. The company has not said how long it will keep them.
Customers Have No Stated Way to Opt Out
Asked whether customers could opt out of having their property photographed, Chatterjee told Bloomberg that Amazon had not thought about it.
Customers also appear to have no way to view images of themselves or their homes, or to ask for them to be deleted, The Verge said.
The devices may capture people and homes without their consent, and the glasses could add to the pressure on drivers to move faster.
Drivers Already Work Under Cameras
The Verge noted that AI cameras inside delivery vehicles have drawn complaints from drivers, who said the system failed to register fastened seat belts and pushed them to pull over just to drink coffee. Footage from those cameras has also leaked online.
Lee wrote that he expects Amazon to face another privacy backlash, and that the company believes customers will welcome faster, more reliable deliveries.

Alien ‘phoenix planet’ was born from the ashes of a dying star

In ancient mythology, the phoenix was a miraculous bird with a cyclical pattern of life and death, perishing in flames only to rise again from the ashes. Astronomers have now found a world that rightly can be called a phoenix planet.
Researchers said this exoplanet, as planets beyond our solar system are called, appears to have been born from material expelled into space during the death throes of a star a bit larger than the sun, and now orbits the highly compact stellar remnant that was left behind, called a white dwarf.
It is classified as a second-generation planet, meaning it did not form from the swirling disk of material surrounding a newborn star, as Earth and other first-generation planets did, but rather from the leftovers of a doomed star.
“This is the first example of a planet forming around a white dwarf,” said Jamie Williams, a doctoral student in astrophysics at the University of Warwick in England and lead author of the study published this week in the journal Nature Astronomy.
The white dwarf is located about 250 light-years from Earth, near the constellation Cetus. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, 9.5 trillion km.
The planet is a gas giant perhaps slightly more massive than Jupiter, our solar system’s largest planet. It orbits the white dwarf every 4.4 days at only 4% the distance between Earth and the sun.
It is so close that the blazingly hot white dwarf’s extreme ultraviolet radiation is causing the planet’s outer atmosphere to evaporate, with a portion then falling into the white dwarf.
The planet’s chemical pattern points to its second-generation origin.
It is rich in niobium, copper and zinc, the type of elements that certain dying stars cast off when they expand in their death throes, indicating the planet formed from a disk of this expelled material that surrounded the stellar corpse.
“In myths, a phoenix is born again from its own ashes. In the case of this planet, it is born again from the ashes of its dying host star, and therefore the planetary system is reborn.

The researchers used data from the orbiting Hubble, TESS and FUSE telescopes, and hope to use the James Webb Space Telescope to confirm their conclusions.
A small number of potential second-generation planets previously have been identified orbiting pulsars, a rare type of neutron star, another type of stellar remnant.
“White dwarfs are much more common than pulsars, and over 95% of stars in the Milky Way will evolve to become a white dwarf. Therefore, there would be many more second-generation planets around white dwarfs than around pulsars,” Williams said.
While the newly discovered planet would be inhospitable for life, another second-generation planet potentially could be habitable.
“If a gas giant formed around a white dwarf, then a rocky planet could form, too. White dwarfs cool predictably over time and as they get cooler, their cooling slows.
So if a second-generation rocky planet formed close enough to the white dwarf then it could remain in the habitable zone for billions of years,” Williams said.
A second study published in the same journal describes another exotic celestial phenomenon roughly 300 to 500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Taurus.
Researchers used the Zwicky Transient Facility at Palomar Observatory in California to discover a red dwarf star about 8% of the mass of the sun in a tight orbit with a brown dwarf, an object too small to be a star and too big to be a planet.
The brown dwarf is about 30 times the mass of Jupiter and a third of the mass of the star.
These two companions orbit each other every 87 minutes at slightly more than half the distance between Earth and the moon, and the star’s gravitational pull appears to be siphoning material from the brown dwarf.
The researchers detected a hot spot on the star’s surface where this material appears to be landing.
“This is the first observed example of this phenomenon,” said Aaron Householder, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate student in astrophysics and lead author of the study.
“The two objects are so close together that the entire orbit would fit inside the sun,” Householder said.

Satanic invocation causes uproar at city council meeting
OTTUMWA — An invocation at the beginning of Tuesday's Ottumwa City Council meeting overshadowed everything else that took place over the course of 80 minutes.
Resident and former council member Matt Dalbey read a satanic prayer — capped off by "Hail Satan" — to kick off the meeting at City Hall, leading to a reaction from New Life Center pastor Rick Bick during a contentious opening few minutes of the meeting.
In a private message, Dalbey said the prayer is used by the Satanic Temple of Iowa, of which he is a member, "but has nothing to do with the belief in a satanic deity."
The Satanic Temple of Iowa is "a resolutely non-theistic" religious organization that follows seven core tenants, according to its website.

Soon after Dalbey left the podium and after the council and staff recited the Pledge of Allegiance, Bick had his turn, and out of turn with the meeting's protocol of speaking on agenda items.
"Let's just reverse this curse that was put on our city. That 'Hail Satan' is not welcome here," Bick said.
