U.S. Forces End Operation Inherent Resolve Mission in Iraq

TAMPA, Fla. — U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) completed the orderly departure of U.S. forces and equipment from Erbil Air Base, Sept. 30, marking the end of the Operation Inherent Resolve mission in Iraq.

The move from Iraq is part of a planned transition to a U.S.-Iraq bilateral defense relationship. Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) remains operational and is now headquartered in Jordan as U.S. forces continue the counter-ISIS mission in Syria alongside Coalition partners and the Syrian government.

CJTF-OIR has advised, assisted, and enabled partner forces in the fight against ISIS in Iraq and Syria since CENTCOM established the unit in 2014.

“Job well done to the tens of thousands of American service members, diplomats, and civilian personnel who answered the call in Iraq,” said Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander. “Because of your grit, sacrifice and professionalism, ISIS no longer poses a systemic threat to Iraq’s national security and Iraqi security forces, including the Peshmerga and other Iraqi Kurdistan Region security forces, now possess the capacity, leadership, and operational independence to unilaterally manage threats to their homeland.”

American and Coalition forces began departing federal Iraq last October as part of a transition that culminated into the removal of personnel and equipment from Erbil Air Base in September.

Located in northern Iraq, Erbil Air Base served as the main operational hub for CJTF-OIR and hosted most of the 1,500 American and Coalition forces supporting counter-ISIS operations.

“As we step back and hand full primary responsibility for Iraq’s security to the Government of Iraq and the brave people of Iraq, U.S. and Coalition forces stationed across the region will remain ready to respond to any ISIS threats that arise,” said Cooper. “Maintaining our vigilance and readiness is essential to protecting the U.S. homeland and strengthening regional security.”

Pentagon Shake-Up: Pete Hegseth to Cut 20 Percent of Admirals and Generals — Just Months After Defense Secretary's Controversial Firing Spree

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is preparing to announce a 20 percent cut in the number of military jobs reserved for generals and admirals, two Pentagon officials confirmed Tuesday.

The plan is part of his longer effort to shrink the Pentagon's senior leadership layer and send more authority to commanders. Hegseth is expected to make the announcement Wednesday during a State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.

Fewer Star-Rank Jobs

The plan shrinks the number of positions that require a general or admiral.

Army, Navy and Air Force leaders, along with officials who manage joint assignments that cut across the services, have been told to finish the reductions by Jan. 1, 2027.

The jobs are called billets, which are an authorized slot on an organizational chart, and the kind of job that is supposed to be filled by a one-star officer or higher.

Generals serve in the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Space Force, while admirals serve in the Navy. Together they are often called general and flag officers.

Cutting 20 percent does not, by itself, require the Pentagon to fire one in five officers who currently wear those ranks. Some of the jobs will be downgraded, and in those cases, a colonel or a Navy captain could fill a post that used to require a general or admiral.

The new target doubles the 10 percent overall reduction Hegseth ordered last year.

That earlier directive also called for a 20 percent cut in active-duty four-star positions and a 20 percent cut among National Guard general officers.

Hegseth Wants to Continue Reduction

Hegseth is doubling an earlier reduction target.

The announcement arrives after an already unusually fast turnover at the top of the armed forces.

Since Hegseth took office, he has fired or pushed out more than two dozen senior military and civilian leaders and blocked promotions for dozens of other officers who had been selected by service boards.

Those moves have included the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and several service chiefs.

Embrace Reforms or Step Aside

Hegseth has already removed senior leaders and stopped other officers from moving up.

Last September, Hegseth summoned hundreds of generals and admirals to Quantico and told them to embrace his reforms or step aside.

This year, commands have been told to send junior officers and enlisted troops who meet fitness rules, including waist-to-height standards, and who keep "impeccable" grooming and uniform appearance.

Some of those service members are expected to work out with Hegseth as part of the visit.

Federal law already limits how many general and flag officers may serve on active duty.

The services now have to decide which headquarters positions can shrink or drop a rank without weakening command of current missions.

Congress may later have to decide whether the underlying statutory caps need to change.

Well, here we are.==

A viral post breaking down SNAP, Medicaid, and federal income taxes by race has been a hot topic on X for reasons that are pretty obvious once you see the numbers.

According to the post, 24.9 percent of Black households receive SNAP compared with 18.5 percent of Hispanic households, 8.5 percent of Asian households, and just 7.9 percent of White households. The Medicaid numbers follow a similar pattern, while the federal income tax figures suddenly swing dramatically in the opposite direction.

On its face, that’s one helluva contrast.

Those numbers definitely tell a story… they just don’t tell the same kind of story, and if you’re a regular Revolver reader, you know we like to dive in and see what’s really going on… and in this case, it got pretty interesting.

The SNAP and Medicaid figures are real enough to track down. In fact, the Economic Policy Institute recently published virtually those exact numbers using Census Bureau data from 2023.

For Medicaid, the breakdown looked like this.

Those numbers are awfully close to the viral post, but there’s one little catch, though, because these percentages are easy to read the wrong way.

That 7.9 percent SNAP figure doesn’t mean White households make up only 7.9 percent of everyone on SNAP. It means that out of every 100 White households, roughly 8 received SNAP, compared with about 25 out of every 100 Black households.

That’s still a massive difference, but it’s worth explaining because those percentages are easy to misunderstand. The Medicaid numbers are calculated the same way.

The tax numbers, however, get a lot muddier. The X post claimsWhites pay 75 percent of federal income taxes, but weirdly enough, there’s no neat IRS chart that backs up that racial breakdown.

Why? Because the IRS doesn’t even ask taxpayers their race or ethnicity.

the Treasury Department says so directly:

“The IRS does not collect information on race and ethnicity on tax returns, so to facilitate analysis of disparities in tax policy,the Treasury Department has developed an approach to impute race and ethnicity in tax data, which it will continue to refine.”

If the IRS doesn’t collect race or ethnicity on tax returns, it obviously can’t just pull up a spreadsheet and tell us exactly what percentage of federal income taxes was paid by each racial group.But it makes you wonder, why don’t they collect that data?

Treasury actually explains that problem further:

“However, it is challenging to perform such analysis by race and ethnicity because there is no single data source with both tax and race/ethnicity information. Tax liability does not depend on race or ethnicity, and this information is not collected on tax returns.”

Still, you have to wonder if there should be a better way to track this. If we’re going to have endless debates about who pays what and who gets what, having more reliable data would seem pretty useful, right?

So, as you can see, tax numbers are harder to nail down, but that doesn’t mean they’re wrong… honestly, they sound pretty spot-on. But since the IRS doesn’t collect race on tax returns, researchers have to estimate these figures using other demographic and financial data.

Interestingly, very similar estimates have been circulating elsewhere, so these numbers aren’t completely out of left field.They’re just not official IRS figures.

So yes, these numbers are very telling indeed. They tell us which US households are living off of the American taxpayers, and it’s likely not a surprise anybody.
