Israeli minister storms Al-Aqsa compound and threatens prisoner

Itamar Ben-Gvir, the leader of a far-right party, has sparked a new double scandal

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has led a major incursion into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem.

Ben-Gvir, leader of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, showed up at the compound on Sunday to mark the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Jews call the area around the mosque Temple Mount, as it used to house two Jewish temples in ancient times before becoming the third holiest site for Muslims.

The minister was accompanied by a heavily armed security detail, as well as backed up by crowds of Israeli civilians. A total of 1,143 Israelis breached the compound in several successive groups, according to the Jerusalem Governorate of the Palestinian Authority.

Ben-Gvir was seen brandishing a massive Torah scroll and performing Talmudic rituals while onlookers cheered, footage from the scene shows.

Shortly after entering the compound, Ben-Gvir stirred up further controversy, releasing on X footage of him confronting Hassan Salameh, a high-profile Palestinian prisoner, in jail. Salameh, believed to be a senior Hamas figure, has been held by Israel for three decades over the 1996 terrorist attacks, including a bus bombing.

Footage released by Ben-Gvir shows him alongside multiple guards armed with assault rifles meeting shackled Salameh inside a small room. “I want to kill you. I want to execute you,” Ben-Gvir told Salameh. The encounter left the prisoner “trembled and terrified,” the minister claimed.

The stunt has been strongly condemned by various rights groups as abusive and inhumane. The Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office, for instance, condemned Ben-Gvir’s actions as a “criminal act” and cheap political theatrics.

Weapons stolen from Ukraine front line handed to notorious neo-Nazi unit

The cache was intercepted while reportedly being shipped to criminal groups in the country’s west

Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) has announced the transfer of weapons worth about $100,000 confiscated from an alleged smuggling ring to the notorious Azov Corps.

The cache, including about 17,000 rounds of ammunition, grenades, single-shot anti-tank grenade launchers, land mines and other weapons, according to the Ukrainian agency, was handed over this week, having been seized in May.

A criminal group had used a humanitarian vehicle to transport the weapons stolen from the front line to Ivano-Frankivsk Region in Western Ukraine, the DBR has alleged.

The weapons were intended for sale on the black market, but will instead be used by Azov, the agency said, describing its members as “defenders of Ukraine.”

Azov originated as an ultranationalist Ukrainian volunteer militia amid the country’s bloody armed coup in 2014, before being incorporated into the country’s security forces. The unit has been widely accused of atrocities and war crimes by both Russia, which designated it a terrorist organization in 2022, and Western organizations, including the UN, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International.

Prior to the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022, US lawmakers had sought to restrict military assistance to the unit, citing its members’ far-right ideology. Western governments have since expanded their cooperation with the formation.

Moscow has for years warned that the Ukraine conflict would become a major source of illicit weapons for criminal groups and has alleged that elements within the Ukrainian state could be protecting trafficking networks.

Law enforcement agencies in several European countries have also warned about the risk that weapons from Ukraine could enter criminal markets.

Ukrainian organized crime tends to become joined at the hip with corrupt officials, as showcased earlier this month by the exposure of a protection racket operating in the prosecutor general’s office, which collected fees from scam-call centers.

The accusations by Western-backed anti-graft investigators forced the resignation of Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko. The former key ally of Vladimir Zelensky has fled the country and reportedly resides in Vienna now.

The Man Behind the Machine: Who is Rahm Emanuel, and Could He Go All the Way for the Democrats?

Rahm Emanuel has been a former advisor to the Bill Clinton White House, a Democrat Congressman for Illinois, President Barack Obama's Chief of Staff, a two-term Chicago Mayor, and President Joe Biden's ambassador to Japan. In the last three decades, he has not been outside the halls of power, most recently strongly hinting at a run for the Democratic presidential nomination for the 2028 election.

In a September interview with Rolling Stone, Emanuel said he was “more yes than no” about a potential 2028 presidential run, and has spent just over a year laying the groundwork with podcast appearances on shows like Honestly with CBS News head Bari Weiss and The New Yorker Radio Hour. He has also published several policy papers over the last year, including one suggesting age limits for political office and banning children under 16 from social media.Polling, however, shows Emanuel is far from the favorite among Democrats. Raheem Kassam, Editor-in-Chief of The National Pulse, has previously suggested an ulterior motive for his shadow campaign: Not to win the nomination, but to secure another top spot in the next Democratic presidential regime, possibly as Vice President.

Emanuel was in contact with Gov. Blagojevich at the time, although was never charged with any wrongdoing, and newly unsealed FBI files released this month show that Obama was aware of Emanuel and Blagojevich discussing giving the seat to Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan. According to Blagojevich, this was in exchange for her father, then Illinois House Speaker, supporting his budget and healthcare package. As a result of the scandal, Blagojevich served seven years and 11 months in prison, until he was pardoned by President Donald J. Trump in 2025.

Following the Blagojevich affair, Emanuel sought and won the Chicago mayoral race in 2011, serving two terms as the mayor of America’s “homicide capital.” Under Emanuel, there were 19,000 shootings, 4,000 murders, and an average of 541 murders per year from 2011 to September 2018. This was up from an average of 463 murders the year prior to him taking office.The fatal shooting of 17-year-old black teen Laquan McDonald in 2014 by Chicago police was Emanuel’s most high-profile scandal after the city refused to release dashcam footage of the incident for over a year. The video did not get a public release until a judge ordered it in November of 2015. McDonald had been shot 16 times by police, with the city agreeing to a $5 million settlement with his family shortly before the footage emerged.The New York Times labeled the affair a “cover-up” in 2015. The Chicago Sun-Times also noted in a 2020 report that Emanuel conveniently agreed to the settlement a week after the April 2015 mayoral runoff, and approved it before any lawsuit had even been filed.

Ukraine admits failure to plug $27 bn defense gap

Kiev has so far found just $7 billion through austerity measures and reallocations, Prime Minister Sergey Koretsky said

Ukraine and its Western backers still have not found a way to cover the unexpected $27 billion hole in this year’s defense budget, Prime Minister Sergey Koretsky said. Despite the funding gap, Koretsky urged Ukrainians to “gain optimism” – while announcing plans to raise VAT next year.

The scope of the defense gap became clear in late August after Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s 40-day PR pressure campaign on Russia, which involved long-range strikes on energy and civilian infrastructure. The escalation triggered a response from Russia, including attacks on military-related logistics, most notably the key port of Odessa.

Zelensky’s request to Kiev’s European backers to plug the gapreportedly caught them off guard, with EU officials privately questioning whether Ukraine is spending efficiently or overstating its needs==.

Publicly, Brussels has still not endorsed the figure of $27 billion. EU Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis said there are “open questions,” while insisting on a “detailed assessment.”

Speaking to TSN on Sunday, Koretskysaid the $27 billion gap is part of the $155 billion total military-related budget this year. He acknowledged that there has not been substantial progress in talks with European nations on the issue.

“The question is that through our joint efforts, we have not yet found coverage for these expenses.”

He noted, however, that Ukraine managed to find $7 billion for military needs by cutting current expenses and reallocating resources.

Though the $27 billion shortfall should formally be covered by the end of the year, Zelensky warned that much of the money is needed sooner, saying drone orders for early 2027 must be paid for in October and November.

The prime minister alsoacknowledged that the conflict with Russia has “shaken” everyone and called on Ukrainians to “stock up on patience” and “gain optimism.” He also confirmed that the draft 2027 budget includes a 1% VAT increase, and acknowledged that this is an unpopular decision.

“Unfortunately, there are no other sources,” he said.

Ukraine has already raised several taxes and excise duties this year, including doubling the profit-tax rate on banks to 50%.

As Kiev struggles to fill the defense gap this year, total military-related needs are expected to rise from $155 billion this year to $175 billion in 2027, according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. On Monday, First Deputy Finance Minister Roman Yermolychev stated that around $70 billion would have to be met through partner funding.

The EU has tied much of the funding to Ukraine’s progress in adopting reforms, including governance and tackling corruption, as several measures remain stalled in the parliament.Brussels also signaled this week that around €20 billion in budget support is available for Kiev this year, but warned that “timely implementation [of the reforms] is key to enabling the [EU] Commissionto proceed with the corresponding disbursements as planned.”

EU intensifies defense and military buildup push

The bloc has approved five industrial projects ranging from drones and missiles to military space capabilities, with Ukraine joining four of them

The EU has greenlit a slew of new joint defense-industrial initiatives, with Ukraine joining most of them, as Brussels presses ahead with its defense buildup despite Russia’s warnings against the bloc’s “rabid” militarization.

The initiatives are part of the European Defense Projects of Common Interest (EDPCIs), large-scale industrial programs pitched as a way for groups of countries to jointly develop, manufacture, and deploy military capabilities too big or complex to tackle alone. The projects fall under the €1.5 billion European Defense Industry Program (EDIP), one of the EU’s mechanisms for expanding weapons production.

The Council formallyendorsed the first five megaprojectswithin the framework on Monday, including:

• Drones and counter-drone systems (DECODER): scaling up and deploying military drones, along with systems to detect and neutralize UAVs;

• Maritime and seabed defense (IMSD): creating joint systems to detect and respond to threats at sea and on the seabed;AD MORE: Canada and UK could merge war chests to fight Russia – media

• SPACE: expanding military space capabilities, including missile-launch early warning, satellite communications, intelligence, and surveillance;

• Integrated air and missile defense (EU-FIAMD): linking participating countries’ air and missile defenses, early-warning capabilities, and command systems;

• Eastern Flank Watch (EFW): strengthening defenses along participating countries’ eastern territories.

On average, 18 member states will be involved in each project.

The European Commission has already earmarked €325 million to support the five initiatives. While the money has not yet been handed out, the decision on Monday makes the projects eligible to apply for this funding and opens the door to further EU financing later.

The initial sum is only a fraction of Brussels’ longer-term ambitions: EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius earlier put their combined funding at around €190 billion ($216 billion) by 2036. He hailed the decision as a “major breakthrough” aimed at closing critical gaps in the EU’s defenses.

Ukraine will take part in four of the five initiatives despite not being an EU member, only sitting out the space initiative.Brussels has been steadily drawing Kiev deeper into its defense-industrial system, arguing that European manufacturers should use Ukraine’s battlefield experience to develop new weapons and technologies.

The European Commission said it will help participating countries get the projects running and coordinate their work. Brussels has also left the door open to more initiatives under the framework in the future.

The EU believes its military buildup is needed to counter what it describes as a growing ‘Russian threat’. Moscow has dismissed the claims as “nonsense,” accusing European governments of using them to justify bloated military budgets and continued weapons supplies to Ukraine. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev slammed the EU’smilitarization as “rabid.”

At the UN General Assembly last week, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed speculation that Russia plans to attack NATO or EU states, accusing European governments of preparing for a conflict with Russia, pointing to their stated goal of boosting military readiness by 2030 and the vast sums being poured into weapons production.

2/ The article was published June 17, 2025, but its subject suddenly deserves another look.

Sen. Ted Cruz was warning about a nuclear EMP attack against the U.S. electrical grid and the catastrophic secondary effects that could follow a prolonged nationwide blackout.

And today the U.S.-Iran conflict is still ongoing, even as negotiations continue.

That makes Juan’s choice to include this particular video especially interesting to me.

3/ The Washington Examiner article states that Iran is among the countries the Pentagon has regarded as potential EMP threats, along with Russia, China and North Korea. Cruz’s warning went beyond an ICBM.

He said: “They would not need an ICBM to do it…” He then described the possibility of delivering a nuclear weapon by ship/container, or placing one aboard a satellite and detonating it at altitude to produce an EMP capable of disrupting the electrical grid.

4/ And this is where the PREPARATION portion of that separate video becomes important.

A major EMP is not merely about losing your lights.

Federal planning documents acknowledge potential consequences involving:

• electrical power

• communications

• computers/electronics

• transportation

• water infrastructure

• other critical systems

CISA specifically treats high-altitude EMP as a national critical-infrastructure concern.

DHS documentation states that FEMA manages the Emergency Alert System specifically so the American public can be notified during a national emergency — including an impending EMP event.

It also says FEMA developed EMP-hardened Primary Entry Point communications facilities so the President can communicate with the nation during emergencies, including EMP scenarios.

So EMP + nationwide emergency communications is not an invented technical connection. It is part of federal preparedness planning.

Massive SpaceX rocket explodes in a fireball as it hits ocean following test flight

SpaceX’s Starship exploded as it hit the ocean after reaching orbit for the first time.

The uncrewed Starship launched around 8.46am ET from SpaceX's Starbase complex along ​the Gulf of Mexico near Brownsville, and was scheduled for a 10-hour mission around the Earth.

However, SpaceX cut Starship’s flight short after an engine unexpectedly shut down during its climb to orbit.

Footage showed the 40-story Starship flip into position for a gentle splashdown at 11.58am ET, only to erupt in a huge fireball seconds after hitting the water.

SpaceX spokesperson Dan Huot said during the livestream: 'Starship has landed.

'As you saw, not quite a soft splashdown as we had on the last one, but it's Starship in the water nonetheless.'

While the SpaceX team did not confirm Starship had exploded, onshore cameras captured the booster exploding near the middle.

Some have deemed the mission a 'complete failure,' but the goal was to send the massive rocket to orbit, and that is exactly what occurred on Monday.

At two minutes and 34 seconds into the flight, Starship executed a successful hot stage to separate from the Super Heavy Booster 21, which completed a landing burn above its target splashdown in the Gulf.

Shortly after, the SpaceX team announced that one of the three Raptor engines on the rocket shut down, nearly scrubbing the orbital mission.

About 20 minutes later, mission control gave the go-ahead to attempt orbit, drawing cheers across Starbase, and about five minutes later, Starship reached the target.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman congratulated SpaceX on the successful launch, saying on X: 'Gorgeous launch, getting Ship to orbit and managing every step in a safe, responsible, and especially inspirational way.

'NASA, along with the rest of the interested public, is excited to help where we can and for Starship missions to become routine!'

About eight and a half minutes after the burn, a dispenser in the rocket's nose began releasing 26 third-generation Starlink satellites, each with 10 times the capacity of its predecessor.

As of 9.54am, Starship had deployed its payload of Starlinks, and about one hour later, SpaceX announced the craft's early return.

'Flight teams will deorbit Starship safely to our pre-cleared area of the Pacific Ocean after 3 hours in orbit,' the Elon Musk-owned company said on X.

Starship appeared to splash down as planned, but seconds later, a massive fireball erupted, sending pieces of the spacecraft flying.

Successful Earth flyby improves Juice’s course to Jupiter

The European Space Agency’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) skimmed the very outer edge of Earth’s atmosphere on 28 September, using the gravity of our home planet to alter its route to Jupiter using very little fuel.

The flyby deflected Juice by an angle of 20° compared to its pre-flyby path and increased its velocity by 3.5 km/s.

In the four weeks before the flyby, spacecraft operators only had to give Juice one tiny nudge (out of six opportunities set aside) to put it on exactly the right approach trajectory to make the most of Earth’s gravity.

They have been tracking the spacecraft extra carefully since 17 August, and will continue to do so until 10 October.

Juice’s closest approach was at 13:45 CEST (11:45 UTC) on 28 September. As Juice flew just 8640 km above the Indian Ocean, it snapped a series of images with its onboard monitoring cameras.

“The flyby required ultra-precise navigation in real time. Thanks to our very careful planning, we used only a small amount of the propellant reserved for this flyby,” says Angela Dietz, Juice’s Spacecraft Operations Manager.

“This gives us more to use at Jupiter to carry out observations of the planet’s icy moons.”

Earth as a testbench

While the main goal was to alter Juice’s trajectory, the flyby also provided a third opportunity to test out Juice’s science instruments on a real surface in space – with the first being during the spacecraft’s 2024 lunar-Earth gravity assist, and the second during the 2025 observations of Comet 3I/ATLAS.

Colleagues from ESA's spacecraft operations, science operations and technical centres spent months working hard with the external teams working on Juice's 10 science instruments to plan which instruments to switch on and when.

Thanks to their efforts, the team has been able to squeeze out as much operational time as possible considering tight spacecraft resources.

“Juice's journey to Jupiter provides only a few opportunities to calibrate and validate the instruments under well-understood environmental conditions,” explains Juice project scientist Claire Vallat, who led the effort.

“Given the limited time available and operational constraints, instrument activities sometimes have to be prioritised, for example when Juice was in Earth's shadow this morning, and relying on battery power alone.

During this flyby, calibration activities were prioritised based on their relevance to preparing the instruments for their work at Jupiter, while also considering whether an opportunity is unique or can be scheduled later in the journey.”

It’s been a lot of work, but an Earth flyby is actually relatively straightforward compared to Juice’s upcoming 35 flybys of Jupiter’s giant moons Ganymede, Europa and Ganymede.

For the Europa flybys, for example, discussions on instrument operations started 10 years ago and will continue until Juice flies past Europa in the early 2030s.

The Earth flyby is a great opportunity to calibrate instruments, figure out how best to work with them in space (where they always work a little differently to on Earth!), and develop data analysis tools.

But the icy moon flybys will be the real deal, and Juice needs to be ready to collect the best possible scientific data.

During the Earth flyby, Juice spent several days flying through the magnetotail – the part of Earth’s magnetic field that stretches out away from the Sun.

This has provided an excellent opportunity to measure magnetic fields and charged particles far from our planet. Meanwhile, the European-Chinese Smile mission has been watching the northern lights and measuring magnetic fields and particles close to Earth.

Together, Juice and Smile's observations provide a unique opportunity to connect activity in the distant magnetotail with what is happening at Earth's poles.

We expect to publish images and spectra collected by some of Juice’s instruments in the coming weeks, after they have arrived on Earth and been evaluated by the teams of scientists working on the instruments.

This includes high-resolution images of the Moon and Earth from Juice’s scientific camera, JANUS.

Next stop: one last hello to Earth

In January 2029, Juice will meet Earth one last time, coming back for a third flyby of our home planet to put it onto the final track to meet Jupiter in 2031.

Exclusive: Jack Smith’s Office Bent Its Own Rules to Rush Software Purchase Days Before Indicting Trump

Former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office bent its own purchasing rules to acquire forensic video software days before its indictment of President Donald Trump regarding the 2020 election, according to Justice Department records released by the Oversight Project.

The documents, obtained through the Oversight Project’s Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, land before Smith testifies Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee concerning his lawfare against Trump.They raise new questions about whether his office followed appropriate legal and ethical standards and what video Smith needed so urgently.

The records show that on June 26, 2023, Smith’s Litigation Support asked Axon Investigate, a component of Axon Enterprises, for its services “for converting all types of video and audio files including lots of proprietary types we receive.”

The “proprietary” video or videos and audio Smith sought have never been identified. But law enforcement officials showed little restraint in their lawfare of Trump.

Most notoriously, FBI agents raided Tump’s Mar-a-Lago home in August 2022, even ransacking Melania Trump’s wardrobe, acquiring surveillance footage.

The opaqueness of Smith’s lawfare is striking, even years later. Smith’s work with Axon is no exception.

When Smith’s office asked for its pricing to aid in its video and audio conversion, Axon replied, “[w]e do not publish the cost of licenses/software,” the document shows. And the Department of Justice still withholds every price as Axon’s confidential information, so taxpayers cannot see what they paid.

Smith’s partisan investigation of Trump “likely” cost taxpayers more than $50 million, Fox News estimated, based on DOJ reports.

At the time of his office’s request to Axon, Smith was clearly motivated to move fast. His office had indicted Trump for retention of classified documents days earlier on June 8, and it was heading towards its next indictment.

On July 12, weeks after that initial request to Axon, Smith’s office’s Records Officer, the official responsible for its records, told Axon to ship overnight, writing, “[w]e are in desperate need of this software.”

The next morning, on July 13, Axon’s federal inside sales representative, Christina Zeman, appeared willing to move forward, responding via email, “[p]leasure meeting you. I will be assisting with placing your order,” adding that she looked “forward to working with you.”

But minutes later, Smith’s executive officer Ariel McIntyre paused the order, citing the office’s approval process.

“As Jack [Smith] mentioned in our budget briefing, he supports more strict requirements than DOJ’s standard policies,” she wrote. Deviating from it, she added, was something “I’m not ok with.”

In another email that morning, she wrote that she needed “to crack down on our processes” and had “a lot less leeway in the audit now that I have staff.”

It is not clear what McIntyre referenced by “the audit.”

Yet later that morning, she authorized the purchase “prior to creating the UFMS obligation,” referring to DOJ’s Unified Financial Management System, because the card was not linked to the finance system “and the purchase is urgent.”

The following morning, on July 14, Zeman, the federal inside sales representative, wrote to Smith’s office, “[r]eceived and I have submitted your order.”

It is not clear from the documents what happened to facilitate the purchase or who approved the apparent exemption, but Axon shipped its license dongles, the devices Smith sought, five days later on July 15.

On August 1, 2023, just two weeks later, Smith indicted Trump again, this time alleging he sought to overturn the 2020 election.

Although Smith took steps to limit public viewing into his investigations of Trump, others outside of DOJ might hold answers.

Bridge section collapses in Russia after Ukrainian strike

Over a dozen train cars derailed after a series of drone strikes on railways in Bryansk Region, according to the local governor

Ukrainian drone strikes have damaged a railway bridge and tracks at three locations in Russia’s Bryansk Region, causing several trains to derail, acting Governor Egor Kovalchuk said on Monday. No injuries have been reported, he added.

Part of a bridge collapsed on the Dyatkovo–Lyudinovo rail section, sending ten cars off the tracks. A separate strike in Unecha District derailed another 18 empty freight cars, according to Kovalchuk.

Repair work at the Unecha site will begin after Russian National Guard personnel inspect the area.

A third attack also damaged tracks in Navlya District, but did not disrupt train traffic or cause injuries, the governor said.

Russian railway authorities have since confirmed that train service in the region has been temporarily disrupted and announced that buses have been organized to compensate while repairs at the damaged site have already begun.

Kiev has increasingly targeted Russian railways in recent months. In June, a drone struck the locomotive of a Moscow–Simferopol passenger train, killing the assistant driver and injuring the driver.

That same month, another drone struck the cabin of a commuter train at Peschaniki station in Bryansk Region, injuring the assistant driver.

Another strike damaged a train cab in the town of Suzemka in March, though no one was injured and service ultimately continued.

Just last week, a Ukrainian drone also attacked a passenger train in Samara Region, more than 500 km from the Russia-Ukraine border. Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said on Friday that the strike damaged the electric locomotive and the first car of the train, but that it did not derail and there were no injuries reported among the passengers.

Moscow has long accused Kiev of resorting to terrorist tactics and deliberately targeting civilians and non-combatants in an attempt to spread fear among the Russian population and out of desperation over suffering repeated battlefield setbacks.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said earlier this month that Kiev’s foreign backers have created a “monster” that could eventually go rogue and endanger the lives of Western civilians while conducting terrorist attacks.

Russia has responded by intensifying its own strikes on Ukrainian military infrastructure and defense facilities, as well as severely disrupting Ukrainian shipping through the Black Sea and fuel supplies in other parts of the country that Moscow considers important to Kiev’s military logistics.

The Crown Royal brand of Canadian Whiskey will not be impacted as it is shipped in bulk raw liquid to the U.S. where it is bottled, packaged and distributed. The Supreme Court ruled last year that while tariffs against products can -under certain conditions- be subjected to congressional approval, but when it comes to trade friction – bans of products outright are legally within the power of the President.This ban on Canadian alcohol will impact approximately $854 million (usd) in imports. Initially, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported that Russian forces hit a nonresidential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district, sparking a fire.

“An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has crashed into a non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district, in the capital’s city center. A fire has broken out,” Klitschko said in a Telegram post.

The Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+ reported that the building attacked was the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Local Telegram channels reported seeing a large column of black smoke rising over the city.

Some channels also claimed that people remained inside the burning building and that people were attempting to escape through windows. These reports have not yet been independently verified.

Oleksandr Sazanovych, head of the Shevchenkivskyi District State Administration, said on Telegram that he was at the scene of the day-time assault.

“Unfortunately, there are injuries and fatalities. All emergency and relevant services are working at the site. I ask residents not to approach the scene and not to interfere with the work of the services,” he wrote, adding that the information was being verified.

Sazanovych did not specify the exact location of the impact, but he published several photos clearly showing that the building is part of the National Academy of Sciences.

Moreover, Ukrainian outlet Ukrinform has published footage showing rescuers assisting victims at the site of a Russian drone strike.

Later, President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the Russian strike, confirming that the damaged building belongs to the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences.

“A rescue operation is currently underway; the fire is being extinguished, and a search is being conducted for people who might have been inside the building. All services have been deployed,” he wrote.
