Foreign investment in Iran hits zero after war

Foreign investment in Iran has effectively come to a halt following the war with Israel and the United States, with no new foreign investment recorded so far this Iranian year, a senior industry ministry figure said.

No foreign investment has been made so far in the current Iranian calendar year, which began on March 21, Tahmoures Lahouti, Deputy Industry Minister and head of Iran’s Small Industries and Industrial Parks Organization, told the Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA).

“Given the sanctions and restrictions in place, foreign investment is not taking place,” Lahouti said. Domestic investment in industrial development has also declined compared with last year, with exchange-rate volatility, inflation and weakening household purchasing power

weighing on businesses, Lahouti added.

The Iranian year began about three weeks after Israel and the United States launched military operations against the Islamic Republic on February 28.

Lahouti did not provide figures for the decline in domestic investment or specify whether his assessment of foreign investment covered all sectors of the Iranian economy.

The rial has lost roughly 60% of its value against the US dollar since the beginning of the Iranian year, increasing the cost of imported equipment and other inputs for businesses. High inflation and uncertainty over future prices have further complicated long-term investment decisions.

====Industrial employment declines

The deterioration in investment has coincided with significant job losses in industry. About 630,000 industrial jobs were lost in the first quarter of the current Iranian year compared with the same period a year earlier, according to figures from Iran’s Statistical Center.

Separate labor-market data have also shown a sharp decline in the number of workers making social-security contributions. The contraction adds to longer-running problems facing Iranian manufacturers, including sanctions, restrictions on international banking, inflation, currency depreciation and recurring energy shortages.

Foreign investment falls as capital outflows surge

Data from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)shows thatIran was already struggling to attract foreign direct investment well before the war.

In 2016 and 2017, following the implementation of the nuclear deal and the temporary easing of international restrictions, Iran attracted an average of about $4.2 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) annually.After the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions in 2018, the trend reversed, with annual FDI subsequently falling to around $1.5 billion.

At the same time, Central Bank data point to a sharp increase in capital outflows. Iran’s capital-account deficit widened from $6.77 billion in 2017 to $19.62 billion in 2025, nearly tripling over the period. Overall, Iran attracted about $12.7 billion in foreign direct investment between 2018 and the end of 2025, while cumulative capital-account deficits approached $120 billion over the same period.

The gap illustrates that Iran’s problem extends beyond its difficulty attracting foreign capital. The country is also recording substantial capital outflows.

Iran falls further behind regional rivals

UNCTAD data for 2025 show the scale of the investment gap between Iran and some of its regional competitors.

Saudi Arabia attracted $32.6 billion in foreign direct investment last year, while the United Arab Emirates received about $48.2 billion.

The figures underscore Iran’s difficulty competing for foreign capital after years of sanctions and restrictions on international banking and trade.

Lahouti’s comments show that those constraints have now choked off an already limited flow of foreign investment. At the same time, depreciation of the rial, inflation, economic uncertainty and persistent capital outflows have made it more difficult for domestic investors to fill the gap.

Foreign investment falling to zero this year is therefore part of a longer trend. Iran was struggling to attract foreign capital well before the latest war, while substantial capital outflows added to the pressure on investment at home.

At least eight women are facing death sentences in prisons across Iran, including four in cases linked to the nationwide January protests, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) rights group reported on Sunday.

HRANA said the women had been sentenced in separate political, security and protest-related cases on chargesincluding “armed rebellion,” “enmity against God” and “corruption on earth,” offenses that can carry the death penalty under Iran’s Islamic penal code.

The cases were heard by branches of the Revolutionary Courts in Tehran, Isfahan, Rasht and Bandar Abbas, the group said.

The death sentences of Pakhshan Azizi and Arghavan Fallahi have been upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court, according to HRANA.

Azizi, who is being held in Tehran’s Evin Prison, was arrested in August 2023 and sentenced to death the following year on a charge of “armed rebellionthrough membership in groups opposed to the country,” HRANA said. Her requests for a retrial have since been rejected.

Fallahi, also held in Evin, was arrested in Tehran in February 2025 and later sentenced to death on a charge of “armed rebellionthrough membership in groups opposed to the government and armed action.” Her sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court in August, HRANA said.

A third woman,68-year-oldZahra Shahbaz Tabari, was sentenced to death for a second time after the Supreme Court overturned an earlier death sentence and ordered a retrial. She wasconvicted of “armed rebellion through membership and activity in an opposition group” and is being held in Lakan Prison in the northern city of Rasht, according to HRANA.

Four other women — Maryam Hadavand, Mahnaz Chardouli, Leila Abolhasani and Taraneh Rahimi — were sentenced to death in cases connected to the nationwide protests that erupted in January, the rights group said.

Hadavand, 45 and a mother of two, was arrested in connection with events in Pakdasht, southeast of Tehran, on Jan. 8 and sentenced to deathon charges including allegedly participating in the killing of two Basij members, deliberately setting fire to a religious site, damaging public property and assembly and collusion against national security, according to HRANA.

Chardouli, held in Qarchak Prison, was tried on charges including“attacking a mosque with a Molotov cocktail,” “participating in gatherings” and “assembly and collusion,” HRANA said.

A Revolutionary Court in Isfahan sentenced Abolhasani, a mother of two teenage daughters,to death on a charge of “enmity against God”== after her arrest during protests in Shahin Shahr on Jan. 8. HRANA said a source close to her family had previously said the case stemmed from her presence at and filming of a fire at a shop, while judicial authorities accused her of involvement in the blaze.

Taraneh Rahimi was among 10 defendants sentenced to death and 11 years in prison in a case involving 16 people arrested over the January protests in Isfahan, known as the “Isfahan Shohada Square” case. The defendants were each sentenced to death and 11 years in prison on charges including “enmity against God through carrying a bladed weapon,” destruction of public property and assembly and collusion, the group said.

The eighth woman, 32-year-old Sevda, also known as Marzieh Ebrahimi Shamsabadi, was sentenced to death in Bandar Abbas on acharge of “corruption on earth”in a case HRANA said was linked to security developments during the war.

She also faced accusations including insulting Iran’s Supreme Leader,conducting media activity deemed contrary to national security, carrying out intelligence activity for hostile governments and photographing a military site and sending images to Persian-language media abroad.

HRANA said five of the eight cases were still at the initial trial or appeal stages.

The group also highlighted the case of Bita Hemmati, who had been sentenced todeath in connection with the January protestsbefore the Supreme Court overturned the sentence in June and ordered a retrial. HRANA said the outcome of the new proceedings remained unclear.

Separately, Varisheh Moradi, who had beensentenced to death on a charge of “baghi,” or armed rebellion, over alleged membership in an opposition group, had her sentence overturned by the Supreme Court in December 2025 and was granted a retrial. Her case remains unresolved.

Araghchi says Iran prepared for ‘doomsday war’

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that Iran was “fully prepared” for war with the United States to resume and would stand firm even if it led to a “doomsday war,” adding that Tehran remained open to diplomacy.

“We are fully prepared for the war to be resumed,” Araghchi told NBC’s Meet the Press. “We stand firm in the face of any new aggression, even if it comes to a doomsday war.”

“At the same time, we stand ready for diplomacy. It is up to President Trump to choose,”he added.

Araghchi said Iran was still awaiting an official US response through mediators to the proposal despite Trump saying he had rejected it. Under the plan, he said the Strait of Hormuz would reopen on the sixth day after agreed US steps, followed by talks on a final agreement on the seventh day.

Araghchi added that Iran’s stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% could be considered in future negotiations if Washington demonstrated “goodwill” and a “real determination for a peace.”

Asked why Iran needed uranium enriched to 60%, Araghchi said it was for “peaceful purposes” and argued that the enrichment was within Iran’s commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

“We have not violated NPT,” he said. “We answered that question in the past during the negotiations, and we can do it again.”

New reports detailing warnings conveyed by Egypt and the UAE before the massacre shatter PM’s claim the security establishment kept him in the dark; if anything, it was the other way around

An investigation into the Egyptian warning conveyed to Israel days before the Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023, published over the weekend in The Atlantic, has added another crucial piece to the puzzle.

The article, published Friday night, confirmed previous reporting that the Egyptian warning was conveyed to Israel by Abbas Kamel, the then-head of the country’s intelligence and at the time one of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s closest associates.

According to The Atlantic, a chartered Cessna jet linked to Egypt’s intelligence service landed at Ben Gurion Airport on September 26, 2023, and took off again 67 minutes later.Kamel had flown in on “a most sensitive mission.” An Israeli source quoted by The Atlantic said Kamel’s blunt message was: “Gaza is going to blow up in your faces,” without specifying an exact date.

The first journalist to report the Egyptian warning, just two days after the October 7 massacre, was Smadar Perry of Yedioth Ahronoth.

Perry’s revelation was met with a barrage of absolute denials, including from the Prime Minister’s Office. But she stood by her reporting, and after Netanyahu’s office denied it on October 9, 2023, she added details indicating that Kamel had been the messenger and cited senior Egyptian officials confirming the report.

It is now becoming clear just how accurate Perry’s reporting was, and how frustrated the Egyptians were by Israel’s indifference to the clear warning they had conveyed.

The Atlantic report was joined on Saturday by a New York Times report corroborating Shlomi Eldar and Ruti Yuval’s revelation, published two weeks ago in Haaretz, about another warning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received at around the same time, from United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed.

The Times report was based on conversations with two separate sources who confirmed that the two leaders spoke and that, during the conversation,an unequivocal warning was conveyed that Hamas was planning a significant offensive move, although no date was specified.

It appears that the source of both warnings was former Palestinian Authority minister Sufian Abu Zaida. A member of the secular Fatah party that controls the PA in the West Bank and serves as a bitter, often violent rival to Hamas, Abu Zaida is considered very close to another senior Palestinian figure, Mohammed Dahlan.

Dahlan is the former powerful Fatah security chief in Gaza who was ousted by Hamas in a bloody 2007 coup. He later became a fierce rival of PA President Mahmoud Abbas and was forced into exile in Abu Dhabi, where he now lives under bin Zayed’s protection.

Last Thursday, Abu Zaida acknowledged in a televised interview in Egypt that he had conveyed warning messages directly from Hamas’s Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar — the mastermind of the October 7 massacre — who dictated them to him word for word. The sheer irony that Sinwar used a loyalist of his ousted Fatah rival to send a message to Israel highlights the highly unusual nature of this backchannel.

The backdrop to the secret communications channel was growing frustration within Hamas over the actions of Israel’s hard-right government. Pressure on Palestinian security prisoners was mounting as National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir deliberately worsened their prison conditions. Hamas was also seething over the erosion of the status quo on the Temple Mount, whose security also falls directly under Ben Gvir’s responsibility.

In addition, the quiet negotiations brokered by then-US president Joe Biden’s administration between Saudi Arabia and Israel were beginning to gain momentum, something that greatly worried Sinwar, heading a terrorist government dedicated to Israel’s destruction, and wary of any regional normalization process that would help cement Israel’s status.

The Hamas leader feared that Saudi Arabia, the central power in the moderate Sunni world, would not condition a historic normalization deal with Israel on resolving the Palestinian issue, and would settle instead for only a general statement about a “future solution.” From Sinwar’s perspective, in such a scenario it would become very difficult to return to serious, practical discussions about Palestinian statehood.

Through the channel opened with Abu Zaida’s mediation, Sinwar, via his envoy Ghazi Hamad,conveyed a demand for the release of several dozen Palestinian security prisoners in exchange for calm.

The Prime Minister’s Office responded on Saturday night to the weekend reports with yet another sweeping denial. But as time passes,more concrete evidenceis accumulating to indicate that Netanyahu, and/or someone very close to him, received warnings about Hamas’s intentions and actively chose not to update the IDF and the Shin Bet.

The New York Times said it has the minutes of a security discussion held on October 1, 2023 — after both warnings had been received — during which neither warning was brought up. According to the minutes, Netanyahu opposed a proposal to eliminate senior Hamas figures and asked to preserve calm in the Gaza Strip in order to advance the Saudi diplomatic track.

In other words, if this matter is eventually investigated by a state commission of inquiry with access to the minutes and the people involved, a picturemay emerge that is opposite to the prime minister’s persistent “they didn’t wake me up” narrative.

In that picture, by failing to pass the warnings on to the heads of the security establishment, it was Netanyahu who failed to grab them by the lapels — not the other way around.

Bill Gates is back on the Sunday-show circuit spreading doom and predicting a massive reduction in the human population.

In an exclusive Meet the Press interview set to air this weekend, the Microsoft co-founder told Kristen Welker that artificial intelligence is "certainly powerful enough to drive events that… cause a billion deaths" - then used the line to demand federal legislation, law-enforcement monitoring, and an end to industry self-regulation.

Gates is touting AI as a species-level emergency, and calling for handing over total control to politicians and a new class of global inspectors.

Welker put the extinction question to him directly: "Do you believe AI is powerful enough to end all of humanity?"

Gates answered: "AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths, you know, so even though it's pretty hard to get to 100%, there's never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools."

"Pretty hard to get to 100 percent." He almost seems disappointed by that.

Gates did not describe a rogue machine deciding to wipe out the species. He framed the threat as people using the newest models as a weapon - then immediately converted that warning into a Washington to-do list.

Asked whether self-regulation was enough, or whether it had to come with legislation, Gates said: "No one thinks self-regulation is enough, so there needs to be legislation passed in Washington. Absolutely. You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like and that has to be a required thing and it will be a little bit of overhead for the industry but not a dramatic slowing of what they're doing."

Three days earlier, Gates was on CBS Mornings laying the metaphysical groundwork. Comparisons to past technologies, he said, miss the point. "Most of society is still not aware of how quickly it's moving," he told Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell. "AI is almost an evolutionary event."
