DOJ sues Minnesota, Minneapolis and St. Paul over firearm purchase waiting periods

The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit Thursday against Minnesota and the cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis over what it calls “unconstitutional restrictions” on firearm purchases.

The lawsuit describes how the state’s “permit to purchase and waiting period regulatory scheme violates the Second Amendment for the more than ninety percent of Minnesota citizens who do not have a carry permit.”

According to the lawsuit, those who wish to purchase a gun for the defense of their homes — and not for public carry — must wait until 30 days after a transferee report is submitted to their local police chief or sheriff.

“Thus, state law effectively creates a 30-day waiting period for Minnesotans, even if a person desires to use a firearm solely for defense of his or her home,” the lawsuit says.

Alternatively, Minnesotans can apply for a permit to purchase, which police have up to 30 days to approve or deny.

“Regardless of whether a Minnesota citizen uses the Minnesota Permit to Purchase process or the Transferee Report process, that person is required to wait up to thirty days to be allowed to purchase a firearm,” the lawsuit says.

Minnesotans with a permit to carry aren’t subject to these requirements. However, the lawsuit notes that the “vast majority of people in the State (over 93 percent) have not obtained a Carry Permit.”

The complaint also alleges that “waiting periods for approvals from chiefs of police in St. Paul and Minneapolis commonly exceed the statutory limit of 30 days,” with some citizens being forced to wait nearly 60 days.

“The Supreme Court held that the home is where the need for defense of self, family, and property is most acute. When a person needs to defend their home, they need to defend it now, not thirty to sixty days from now,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division.

“Law-abiding citizens do not need government permission to purchase a firearm, and forcing a citizen who has already passed a background check to wait up to sixty days to obtain a firearm is intolerable under the Constitution.”

[TRANSCRIPT] – Question: Mr President, you said earlier that the trilateral format negotiations of Russia, the United States and Ukraine could resume after the State Duma elections. The elections have concluded. Where and when could a new round of negotiations take place?

President of Russia Vladimir Putin: As is well known, the Ukrainian side broke off the negotiations that were held in Istanbul. But now – or rather, even before the elections, about 10 days or a couple of weeks ago – it declared its readiness to resume these negotiations. Indeed, we said that negotiations are unlikely to be held before the State Duma elections, and that we will be ready to resume these contacts following them.

James Comey, former FBI director in hot water for a social media post of seashells spelling out 86 47 on a North Carolina beach, will not face arraignment next week in New Bern.

Judge Louise Flanagan, of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, on Friday afternoon pushed the date back to January. Trial would now begin in February. It's the third delay since the summer.

In her order, she wrote, “The court finds that the ends of justice served by granting the requested continuance and setting arraignment in January 2027, outweigh the best interests of the public and defendant in a speedy trial. The gravity of the charges, pending motions, and the need to provide defense counsel additional time to prepare for trial promote need for continuance.”

“While ready to adhere to the current schedule, implicit in the government’s reported statement of no opposition here is its agreement that the ends of justice served by this continuance, for direct benefit of defendant, outweigh the interests of the public in a speedy trial.”

Comey is facing two federal counts of threats against the president.

Comey said he discovered the arrangement while walking the beach. He took down the social media post soon after putting it up, with an explanation that he didn’t know the numbers could be taken as a promotion of violence.

Prosecutors say two minutes before his post, Comey’s wife texted him a screenshot of the definition of 86 – to get rid of or refuse service.

The filing from prosecutors says, “There is no serious dispute that an objective viewer of Comey’s post could read it to mean ‘Kill President Trump.’”

The arrangement was 4 miles down from beachfront property where Comey stayed. Prosecutors say text messages between Comey and his agent after the social media post included the former FBI director’s assertion he didn’t mean for a viral post, yet said, “I’ll be OK if it sells books.”

Comey’s Instagram account had an estimated 200,000 followers at the time, prosecutors say, and the reach to secondary users would be in the millions.

Flanagan had set arraignment for Wednesday and a trial to begin Oct. 21. Before that, arraignment was set for June 30 with trial to begin July 15.

Seeking to curb Iranian influence in Iraq, the US is said to have threatened senior Iraqi politicians with sanctions targeting the Iraqi state, including potentially its critical oil revenues, should armed groups backed by Iran be included in the next government.

Iraq, which has long walked a tightrope between Washington and Tehran, has received a warning to this end from the US, reported Reuters quoting Iraqi officials and “one source familiar with the matter”.

The US warning was delivered repeatedly over the past two months by the US Charge d’Affaires in Baghdad, Joshua Harris, in conversations with Iraqi officials and influential Shia leaders. The message was also conveyed to some heads of Iran-linked groups via intermediaries.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa al-Sudani has also met earlier this month with US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack, in Baghdad. The focus of the meeting seems to have been on Syria and US decision to transfer ISIS detainees from there to Iraq, said analysts.

According to INA, the Iraqi premier highlighted “a constructive partnership between Iraq and the United States in combating terrorism” alongside cooperation on economic development, sustainable growth and supporting bilateral and regional efforts for prosperity in Iraq and the region.

Since taking office a year ago, Trump has acted to weaken the Iranian government, including via its neighbour Iraq.

The US president has pursued a maximum pressure campaign against Iran, with Iraq often caught in the crossfire as Tehran has used it as a vital economic lung.

Iran views Iraq as vital for keeping its economy afloat amidst sanctions and long used Baghdad’s banking system to skirt the restrictions, US and Iraqi officials have said.

Successive US administrations have sought to choke that dollar stream, placing sanctions on more than a dozen Iraqi banks in recent years in an effort to do so.

But Washington has never curtailed the flow of dollars from the oil revenues of Iraq, a top OPEC producer, sent via the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to the Central Bank of Iraq.

The US has had de facto control over oil revenue in dollars from Iraq, a top OPEC producer, since it invaded the country in 2003.

For the last 23 years, the United States has held effective control over the country’s oil revenue in dollars, giving Washington extraordinary leverage over Baghdad’s affairs, with implications for regional dynamics involving Iran.

Oil is Iraq’s most important revenue source, accounting for some 90% of the state budget. This gives Washington significant sway over the country’s economic and political stability. When the Iraqi government asked US troops to leave the country in 2020, Washington reportedly threatened to cut Iraq’s access to the New York Federal Reserve funds, with Baghdad ultimately backing down.

While the Iraqi government has gained more control over its financial affairs since the early years of the US occupation, the ongoing relationship highlights the enduring influence of the US on Iraq’s economic landscape, even as the country seeks to assert its sovereignty and independence.

“The United States supports Iraqi sovereignty, and the sovereignty of every country in the region. That leaves absolutely no role for Iran-backed militias that pursue malign interests, cause sectarian division, and spread terrorism across the region,” a US State Department spokesperson told Reuters.

The US spokesperson did not answer Reuters questions about the sanction threats. Trump, who bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities in June, threatened to again intervene militarily in the country during protests last week.

Among the senior politicians to whom Harris’ message was passed were Prime Minister Sudani, Shia politicians Ammar Hakim and Hadi Al Ameri, and Kurdish leader Masrour Barzani. The conversations with Harris started after Iraq held elections in November in which Sudani’s political bloc won the single-largest bloc of seats but in which Iran-backed militias also made gains, the sources said.

The message centred on 58 members of parliament views by the US views as linked to Iran.

“The American line was basically that they would suspend engagement with the new government should any of those 58 MPs be represented in cabinet,” one of the Iraqi officials said. The formation of a new cabinet could still be months away due to wrangling to build a majority.

When asked to elaborate “they said it meant they wouldn’t deal with that government and would suspend dollar transfers,” an official said.

Iran has long supported an array of armed factions in Iraq. In recent years, several have entered the political arena, standing for election and winning seats as they seek a slice of Iraq’s oil wealth.

“Serious threat”

Renad Mansour, director of the Iraq Initiative at London’s Chatham House think tank, said armed groups were increasingly benefiting from positions in Iraq’s massive bureaucracy and so took the threat of cutting dollar flows seriously.

“The US has significant leverage,”‌ he said. “The threat of the loss of access to US dollars, which is how Iraq’s economy functions through the sale of oil, has made it very concerning.”‌

One of the people Washington objects to is Adnan Faihan, a member of the powerful, Iran-backed political and armed group Asaib Ahl al-Haq (AAH), who was elected first deputy speaker of parliament in late December, the Iraqi official and the source with knowledge of the matter said.

They said the US opposed Faihan’s appointment to the post. In a sign the pressure campaign was working, AAH leader Qais al-Khazali communicated a willingness to the Americans to remove Faihan as deputy speaker, an Iraqi official told Reuters. Faihan currently remains in his position.

In the last government, AAH held the education ministry, and Iraqi officials say it is seeking to participate in the next government, too. AAH was a key group in a sophisticated oil smuggling network generating at least a $1 billion a year for Iran and its proxies in Iraq, sources previously told Reuters.

Khazali was sanctioned by Washington in 2019 for AAH’s alleged role in serious human rights abuses, related to the killing of protesters in Iraq that year and other violence, including a 2007 attack that killed five US soldiers. At the time, he dismissed the sanctions as unserious.

Iraq holds the bulk of proceeds from its oil export sales at a Central Bank of Iraq account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Though it is a sovereign account of the Iraqi state, the arrangement gives the US practical control over a critical choke point of Iraqi state revenues, making Baghdad reliant on Washington’s goodwill.

“US efforts to achieve stability in the region are focused on ensuring states retain their sovereignty and can achieve security through mutual economic prosperity,” the US State Department spokesperson said.

The move to pressure Baghdad with a possible suspension of dollars takes place as the US begins marketing Venezuelan oil, which followed the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in Caracas by US forces and his transfer to New York to be put on trial in relation to drug charges.

The US Department of Energy has said all proceeds from Venezuelan oil sales would be initially settled in US-controlled accounts at globally recognised banks.

A citywide manhunt led to the arrest of two suspects who New York City police say emerged from a manhole just outside a hotel where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regularly stays during the UN General Assembly.

The suspects’ trip into New York’s underground predawn Wednesday appears to have nothing to do with targeting the hotel, where Netanyahu was expected to stay the next day, police said. It’s instead part of a citywide crime pattern of individuals going into the sewers, looking for valuables and scrap metal that are swept into the system, police said.

Two Queens men, Kevin Rodriguez, 26, and Samuel Reveron, 25, were charged with criminal trespass. They were released on Friday morning after an arraignment in Manhattan criminal court.

Brian Kennedy, an attorney for Reveron, denied any connection between his client’s alleged conduct and the United Nations or any international government officials. It’s “entirely plausible” that someone might go into the sewers looking for valuables, Kennedy told CNN. “Desperation leads to great efforts.”

CNN has reached out to Rodriguez’s attorney for comment.

Because of the heightened security around the UN General Assembly and the proximity of the underground incursion to a highly sensitive location, authorities prioritized identifying the individuals and determining why they were beneath the hotel in the pipes and tunnels of the city’s sewer system.

The NYPD and US Secret Service reviewed videos, license plate readers and other tools to try and identify the intruders, officials said.

The investigation involved the use of a combination of modern police technology and old-fashioned shoe leather, according to law enforcement officials.

Detectives pulled video from the major case unit going door-to-door along Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, where witnesses said three men were seen getting into a pair of vehicles just after 4 a.m.

When a picture of the license plate of one of the cars was developed, it was entered into the NYPD license plate reader system. The system gave detectives a pattern of the car’s travels, including when it arrived and when it departed the Park Avenue location. It also allowed detectives to learn the registered owner and to pull body cam video of him from prior car stops for traffic violations.

Detectives went to the location where the vehicle was registered and staked out the car until the suspect approached the vehicle and was taken into custody. It is not clear whether the two suspects were arrested together or separately. Additional suspects are being sought.

The arrests fit into a pattern of incursions into the city’s sewer and underground tunnels over the past few months, where citizens have taken cell phone video of people going into manhole covers or coming out of them during predawn hours wearing hip waders and boots. Detectives say in a number of cases where arrests were made the suspects made statements that they were just looking for valuables, including gold chains, rings, or other metals such as copper that can be resold.

In the end, a case that set off alarm bells to the NYPD and the US Secret Service about national security, and the potential for foreign agents or terrorists, ended with some high-end detective work leading to an unglamorous motive.

The White House has removed CNN’s access to Air Force One for President Donald Trump’s Saturday flight to Knoxville, where he is scheduled to attend Tennessee-Texas, and replaced it with Real America’s Voice and Lindell TV.

CNN White House correspondent Alayna Treene announced the replacement during an appearance on the network with Anderson Cooper and was not very pleased with the change.

The liberal network was originally scheduled for the television pool rotation that day, the slot networks use to shoot video that other outlets are free to air.

Friday night’s White House guidance left CNN off the plane.

“The White House is now preventing CNN from carrying out their TV duties,” she said. “It’s unclear what’s going to happen to [the pool coverage] now.”

“We did hear our outside lawyer representing CNN, Politico, and MS NOW say earlier today that he believed the restoration of the outlet’s access included the White House pool, but clearly this White House is keeping us from doing so,” Treene continued.

“We know that they are definitely singling us out here.”

CNN later wrote that “no outlet” was listed as a replacement, taking a clear shot at Real America’s Voice and Lindell TV.

“The move — announced Friday night in a White House note that lays out the president’s schedule — represents the Trump administration’s latest salvo against CNN and the broader White House press corps. No outlet was listed as replacing CNN, meaning there will be no television pool coverage of his trip,” CNN claimed.

Last week, Trump banned CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House complex, accusing them of “FICTION and LIES.”

KARMA POURS AGAIN: Anti-Trump Wisconsin Brewery That Promised Free Beer the Day President Trump Dies Now Says Its Madison Taproom Will Likely Close

The far-left Wisconsin brewery that spent years marketing itself as a celebration of President Donald Trump’s death is watching the tap run dry.

Minocqua Brewing Company owner Kirk Bangstad now says his Madison taproom will likely shut its doors by the end of the year after the Wisconsin Department of Revenue revoked the company’s alcohol permits, according to Fox News.

Madison station Channel 3000 first reported Bangstad’s admission that the East Washington Avenue lease expires at year’s end and that he cannot carry the rent through a winter legal fight. He owns the Minocqua building and says that location can limp through the off-season. Madison, he says, cannot.

The brewery has said the state is targeting it because of its political views.

The dispute follows state allegations that beer transported from Illinois was brought into Wisconsin without required permits and tax payments.

The brewery disputes the state’s action. Wisconsin’s Department of Revenue told Fox News that an appeal hearing is scheduled for November 18 and the revocation will not take effect until the appeals process is complete.

The controversy began in January, when the brewery posted that it would serve “free beer, all day long the day he dies,” a remark widely understood to refer to Trump.

As The Gateway Pundit previously reported, Bangstad posted on the company’s Facebook page (his Facebook post has now been deleted) to share his outrage that the latest attempt on President Trump’s life didn’t succeed.

He even dusted off the company’s disgusting “free beer all day the day he dies” promotion, with posts reportedly lamenting “we almost got #freebeerdays” and mocking the “marksmanship” of whoever tried to take out the President of the United States.

But that’s just the surface of Bangstad’s insane liberal activities. He previously founded the Minocqua Brewing Company Super PAC and has poured millions into electing Democratic politicians, judges, and liberal causes across the state.

He also personally sued to keep Trump off the Wisconsin ballot in 2023 and 2024, filing complaints with the Wisconsin Elections Commission and dragging the case into court in a desperate attempt to disenfranchise millions of Wisconsin voters.

In June, state agents and local police inspected the brewery and seized cases of alcohol. The state said it had been discussing compliance concerns with the company and its legal counsel for months.

In July, TGP reported that Wisconsin had issued notices revoking permits for the brewery’s Minocqua and Madison locations, while the company could continue operating during its appeal.

Ukraine’s largest steel producer, ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog, has halted productionafter repeated Russian missile strikes caused extensive damage to the plant, the company announced on Friday.

The Russian Defense Ministry has said that Moscow is targeting Ukrainian military and defense-related facilities and supporting infrastructure in response to Kiev’s escalating long-range attacks on Russian energy and industrial sites.

The steelworks, located in the central Ukrainian city of Krivoy Rog,also includes iron ore mining operations. Before the escalation of the conflict in 2022, it produced 4.9 million tons of steel annually.

ArcelorMittal said the facility had been hit four times over the past five weeks, most recently on September 21. The strikes caused extensive damage to production facilities, leaving the company unable to restart operations “in a safe and sustainable manner.”

CEO Mauro Longobardo said the companywould focuson preserving the plant’s infrastructure so production could eventually resume. ArcelorMittalexpects to take a charge of around $1 billion due to the reduced value of the facility and its equipment.

Theshutdown follows stoppages at Zaporozhstal and Kamet Steel, both owned by Ukrainian metals giant Metinvest. Together with ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog,the three plants accounted for about 90% of Ukraine’s steeloutput before Russian strikes brought production to a halt, according to the Financial Times.

“As of today, [Ukraine] doesn’t have a steel industry anymore,” Aleksandr Vodoviz, head of the CEO’s office at Metinvest, told the FT, adding that repairs could take “days, weeks, months, or years.”

The Russian Defense Ministry said this week that it had struck the Krivoy Rog steelworks and other industrial facilities involved in Ukrainian military production. Other recent targets cited by the ministry include drone production and storage sites, power infrastructure, bridges, ports, warehouses, and logistics hubs.

A day before the latest strike on the steelworks,Ukraine launched its largest drone attack on Moscow, killing several people and hitting a major oil refinery.

Russia has condemned strikes on civilians as acts of terrorism, while maintaining that its forces only target military and defense-related facilities.
