Israel Continues to Shoot Children in the Head During the Gaza Ceasefire

Bahaa Abu Al-Ajeen, 32, set out with his 3-year-old son Rayan to check on their family home east of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza at approximately 5:00 pm on June 14. According to Bahaa, the area appeared safe and deserted. He said there were no visible soldiers, no gunfire, and no drones overhead.

“The area was safe. If I had felt any danger, I would never have gone there,” he said.

After inspecting the house and leaving the area, Bahaa said he was shocked to see Israeli soldiers emerging from a nearby building.

“My son was in my arms and crying intensely from fear,” he recalled. “It was the first time I had ever seen him so frightened.”

According to his account, he decided to move away from the soldiers in an attempt to calm Rayan and walked approximately 500 meters from the area. Bahaa said that after he had distanced himself, the soldiers began shouting at him to stop. He stated that two shots were fired in his direction but did not hit either him or his son, prompting him to stop out of fear for their lives.

“After I stopped, one of the soldiers knelt down and fired directly at my son,” Bahaa said. “The bullet entered the back of Rayan’s head and exited through his left eye. Moments later, another bullet struck my left leg. When I saw them kill my son, I screamed and asked them, ‘He is a child. Why did you kill him?’”

Bahaa said he attempted to call an ambulance using his mobile phone, but the soldiers confiscated it and prevented him from seeking medical assistance. According to Bahaa’s testimony, Rayan bled for approximately seven minutes before dying from his injuries. He said he pleaded with the soldiers to save his son, but they refused.

Hours of Pain

Bahaa stated that after he was wounded and his son was killed, soldiers dragged him while he was still holding Rayan and took him to what he described as a military-controlled area near the Kissufim crossing. Upon arrival, he said, the soldiers took Rayan away from him and left him bleeding on the ground.

By that point, Bahaa said his left leg had been nearly severed. He recalled hearing soldiers discussing whether his leg should be amputated.

“I heard one of them speaking Arabic and saying that my leg was beyond saving and should be amputated,” he said.

The discussion left him terrified. Later, according to Bahaa, soldiers loaded him into an Israeli military vehicle. During the journey, he asked about his son.

“They told me that Rayan was dead,” he said.

Bahaa stated that soldiers then placed Rayan’s body in a black plastic bag and handed it to him.

“At that moment, I wished they had killed me and let my son live,” he said.

The largest US power grid failed for a third straight year to secure enough future supply commitments to ensure reliability for the future amid a historic boom in data center demand.

PJM Interconnection, the largest US power grid (Regional Transmission Organization), which serves 67 million customers in 13 states and Washington, DC, said its auction to procure power for the year starting June 2028 fell 6.8 gigawatts short of what it will need to guarantee system reliability during demand spikes, in a statement released Tuesday. The shortfall is equivalent to almost seven traditional nuclear reactors.

The result ramps up pressure on a grid that’s home to Virginia’s Data Center Alley, the biggest concentration of data centers in the US, and has borne the brunt of criticism for the struggle to manage the AI boom and sufficiently protect customers from soaring costs. Attention now shifts to an emergency procurement mechanism later this year that aims to shift the burden of ramping up power generation to hyperscalers.

6.831 Megawatt Shortfall

PJM Interconnection today announced the results of its 2028/2029 Base Residual Auction (BRA), which secured 138,318 MW of unforced capacity generation (UCAP) and demand response to meet projected electricity needs for the more than 67 million people across 13 states and the District of Columbia, which fall under the RTO's umbrella.

Regions under the Fixed Resource Requirement (FRR) acquired an additional 10,864 MW in UCAP, for a total of 149,182 MW in UCAP available to serve forecasted peak electricity demand, plus a reserve margin. UCAP represents a generation resource’s maximum output adjusted for its estimated ability to reliably perform at times of highest system risk. The capacity of the resources procured in the auction, plus FRR resources, is short of PJM’s reliability requirement by 6,831 MW, meaning that the committed supply is less than what would be required to meet the one-event-in-10-year reliability standard (and with electricity-guzzling data centers popping up almost daily these days, the one-event-in-10-year has become a daily occurrence).

Little public information exists about SLIC, which grew out of an earlier Israeli government-funded junket for American politicians. The group’s website has only a basic contact form, and its nonprofit registration has not yet appeared in the official database, which usually takes a few months. The June 2 event was not reported anywhere except for a Facebook post (and identical Instagram post) by SLIC cofounder Michael Gottlieb, a Democratic state legislator in Florida.

Documents obtained by Drop Site News under the Florida Sunshine Law outline SLIC’s aims: to set up a system to distribute pro-Israel “model legislation” to state lawmakers around the country. When reached by phone, Gottlieb insisted that the organization was entirely his own initiative, though he acknowledged that the Israeli government funded the launch event.

SLIC is maintaining a Dropbox account to share language for bills, according to the launch event invitation obtained under the Florida Sunshine Law. The linked account is not available for members of the public to view.

“I believe I’m the only person who has contributed so far,” Gottlieb said, referring to the draft legislation his organization is pitching lawmakers. Gottlieb mentioned two specific examples of future proposals he had in mind: “Some states have had Shari’a law bans, so somebody could put that there if they wanted, and there are Judea and Samaria bills.”

Earlier this year, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill against applying Islamic law in Florida, stating that “we shouldn’t have people in this country that hate this country.” The state legislature is currently considering a bill to ban calling the West Bank by anything other than the Israeli nationalist term “Judea and Samaria,” which Gottlieb insists is the correct name.

“Anybody could contribute anything to it,” Gottlieb added, referring to the Dropbox account. “It wouldn’t necessarily have to be Israel-focused or Jewish-focused or antisemitism-focused. You could put it in there for anybody to see.”

Gottlieb’s Facebook post claims that 75 lawmakers from 35 states have joined SLIC so far,and the launch event invitation promises to release a directory, with the option for members to remain anonymous due to “antisemitism and doxxing issues.” Emily Gise, a Republican state legislator from Oklahoma, is listed as vice chair on the invitation. Jeremy England, a Republican state legislator from Mississippi, is listed as treasurer. Neither responded to requests for comment. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the invitation explains, “SLIC will not as an organization take a role in lobbying for candidates or legislation, instead we will serve as a vault so that members can access this information and utilize it for their states, as they deem appropriate.”

The U.S. tax code limits the political lobbying that 501(c)(3) organizations can engage in. While nonprofits are absolutely forbidden from campaigning in elections, they are allowed to attempt “to influence legislation” by contacting lawmakers, as long as it is not a “substantial” part of their activities, according to the Internal Revenue Service. However, the IRS gives nonprofits wide latitude to “educate” the public about specific issues without it counting as lobbying.

Home Office announces move that officials say comes close to proscribing group as a terrorist organisation

The UK will ban support for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Keir Starmer said on Monday, in a move that officials said came close to proscribing the military group as a terrorist organisation.

The prime minister announced his government would designate the branch of the Iranian military under a new National Security Act, enabling law enforcement to take action against anyone deemed to be providing it with support.

The IRGC’s designation comes after years of wrangling over whether it should be officially proscribed, given its centrality to the Iranian government machinery. It has the potential to further undermine relations between London and Tehran just as the US and Iran resume hostilities.

It was announced alongside similar designations for the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right (IMCR), which has been blamed for attacks on Jewish targets in the UK, and the Russian GRU Volunteer Corps, an international branch of Russian military intelligence.

Starmer said: “We have already taken tough action against the Iranian regime and those linked to it, and against Russian operatives and networks targeting our country. These new powers will make it easier to prosecute and lock up anyone carrying out their dirty work here in Britain.

“Anyone acting on behalf of those who threaten our national security should be in no doubt that there is no place for you in Britain. We will find you, and you will face the full force of the law.”

Shabana Mahmood, the home secretary, said: “Iran and Russia are using proxies and thugs to do their dirty work on our shores. I have rapidly designated three groups so those working for them will be tracked down and put behind bars.”

Ministers have debated proscribing the IRGC for years.

In 2023, the government decided not to list the group as a terrorist organisation, choosing instead to hit it with additional sanctions amid concerns about the diplomatic fallout of a full proscription.

Officials warned at the time that proscribing the IRGC would be likely to lead to the expulsion of the UK ambassador to Tehran, removing an important route of communication to the Iranian government.

But ministers said on Monday they had been prompted to act in part because of recent threats to British targets. They included plots to assassinate two Iran International TV journalists in the UK, as well as cyber-attacks on infrastructure in Britain, Australia and Canada.

Designating the three organisations introduces new criminal offences for people who support, assist or receive a benefit from them. If anyone conducts espionage or sabotage on their behalf, they would face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
