Sanctions not working. Israeli settler violence continues unopposed

Australia’s sanctions regime on Israel is not holding many perpetrators accountable for grave human rights abuses and war crimes.

As illegal Israeli settlements and settler violence escalate across the occupied West Bank, Australia has sanctioned only half of those sanctioned by our allies.

Despite Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s recent announcement of additional sanctions, Australia’s response has not only been minimal, slow and ineffective, with any serious sanctions reform in effect ‘vetoed’ by the Israel Lobby.

Amnesty International has just released a major report detailing Israel’s accelerating annexation and ethnic cleansing of the West Bank – particularly the Palestinian Bedouin and herding communities.

The report is It is a detailed and chilling account of Israel’s state-led and state-funded systematic campaign of ethnic cleansing and settler-army violence. Resulting in an “exponential rise in state-backed settler violence

terrorising and expelling thousands of Palestinians to annex land.

Settler escalations ignored

Israeli settlements, considered ‘illegal’ under international law, have increased by 80% since the far-right Netanyahu Government took power, with 102 new settlements established since 2022.

Since October 7, 2023, the West Bank has seen a major escalation in Israel’s State-sponsored ethnic cleansing, including state-led settlement expansion, forced displacement, illegal land confiscations and settler-army violence.

Controversial measures such as the E1 settlement project and new land ownership rules have been designed to undermine the 1993 Oslo Accords, and ‘accelerate settlements’; and importantly, establish “de facto” annexation of the West Bank and, in the words of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich,

bury the idea of a Palestinian State.

Since October 2023, there have been more than 3,000 settler and military attacks across the West Bank— approximately five every day —killing 1,096 Palestinians, around one-fifth of them children.

In January 2026 alone, more than 200 violent settler-army attacks were reported in the Masafer Yatta region in the South Hebron Hills. At least 50 Palestinian villages, mostly Bedouin herding communities, have been totally erased and displaced from their historic lands.

Settlers have seized over 18% of the land designated for a future Palestinian state, with few repercussions.

Abelardo de la Espriella, a conservative political newcomer backed by President Donald Trump, clung to a narrow lead Sunday in Colombia’s cliffhanger presidential election with nearly all the votes counted.

More young Britons believe the UK would be better off as a republic than a monarchy, an Ipsos survey has suggested

Public support for the British monarchy has fallen to its lowest level in over three decades, a new poll has suggested.Just under half of Britons still favor removing the monarchy, with support particularly weak among younger people.

Support for the monarchy has steadily declined since reaching a peak of 80% in 2012and fell to 55% in 2026, according to data published by Ipsos on Friday.The figure is the lowest recorded by the market researchand polling company since it began tracking the issue in 1993 and is well below the long-term average of 71%.

Support hasdeclined across all age groups but is particularly low among Britons aged 18-34where only a third of respondents said they favor the monarchy – roughly half the level recorded in 2013. According to Ipsos,45% of people in that age group would prefer the UK to become a republic instead.

Satisfaction with King Charles and his heir, Prince William, remains high, the poll suggested as 60% and 71% of respondents respectively said they liked the way the king and the prince were doing their jobs.

The monarchy’s popularity took a hit over one of the Royal family member’s long-standing association to late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The now former Prince Andrew, King Charles’ brother, was initially accused in 2014 of being one of the persons the disgraced financier sex-trafficked woman to.

Andrew settled a civil lawsuit with one of the sex-trafficking victims, Virginia Giuffre, in 2022, while still denying all the allegations. In 2026, the British police opened a criminal case against him after a release of additional files in the Epstein case suggested that he allegedly provided confidential government information to the convicted sex offender.

Buckingham Palace commented on the case in February by saying that the Royal family was ready to support the probe“if we are approached by Thames Valley Police”and adding that the king’s “thoughts and sympathies have been, and remain with, the victims of any and all forms of abuse.”

According to a poll conducted by YouGov in April,Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor remains the most disliked member of the family by a wide margin, with over 90% of Britons having a “negative” or “very negative” view of him.

Theinfluence of the British monarchy abroad has also declined in recent years, with some former British colonies considering severing their remaining ties to the Crown.Barbados became the most recent Caribbean nation to become a republic in 2021 while remaining within Britain’s Commonwealth.

A survey conducted by former Conservative Party deputychairman Michael Ashcroft in 2023 suggested that six of the 14 overseas countries within the Commonwealth realm – including Canada and Australia – would prefer to ditch the monarchy.

Ipsos research carried out earlier this year, with fieldwork 5-11 March 2026, updates our long-term trends on public attitudes towards the monarchy, and shows that while the majority still support the institution, this has fallen to its lowest level since the series started 33 years ago amidst a growing age gap in views.

-55% of Britons say they would favour Britain becoming a monarchy, 27% a republic, and 18% don’t know.

-While monarchists outnumber republicans 2:1, this is the lowest level of support Ipsos has recorded for the monarchy since the series began in 1993 (the previous low was 60% in 2021)

-This is particularly driven by a change in views among young people. Just 33% of 18-34 year olds support a monarchy, compared to 45% who prefer a republic. Older people remain staunchly monarchist, with 74% of those aged 55+ supporting a monarchy, just 14% a republic.

-However, satisfaction with the way King Charles and Prince William are doing their jobs remains high, at 60% and 71% respectively, and 60% still believe the monarchy has an important role to play in the future of Britain.

Monarchy or republic?

Since 1993 Ipsos has asked the British public whether they would prefer Britain becoming a republic or remaining a monarchy. Every time we have found that a majority of Britons favour a monarchy, but this year at 55% is the lowest level of support we have recorded in that series (the previous low was 60% in November 2021, against a long-term average of 71% support). Still only around 1 in 4, 27%, want a republic, but this also matches the previous high of 28% in May 2023, and is above the long-term average of 19%. 18% say they don’t know.

There are also clear age differences, with young people today much less supportive of the monarchy than young people in the past:

- 18-34 year olds: 33% support a monarchy, 45% a republic, 22% don’t know. This 33% support for the monarchy is less than half the peak of 74% support among people aged 18-34 in 2013 just after the Diamond Jubilee, and even lower than young people nearly 20 years ago when 58% of 18-34s then supported the monarchy.

- 35-54 year olds: 51% support the monarchy, 28% a republic, and 21% don’t know. Again this is down from the high levels of support during 2012-13 when 78% of middle-aged people then backed the monarchy, and slightly lower than the 60% support 21 years ago in 2005.

- Those aged 55+: 74% support the monarchy, 14% a republic and 12% don’ t know. While this is also slightly lower than the peak of 86% in 2012, unlike other age groups older people today are as supportive as 55+ year olds back in 2005, when 75% supported the monarchy.

Satisfaction with the way that King Charles and Prince William are doing their jobs remains high.

King Charles: 60% say they are satisfied with the way Charles is doing his job as Monarch, broadly in line with his ratings since he became King (24% are dissatisfied). However, these ratings are lower than Queen Elizabeth II used to get, who averaged 79% satisfaction between 1992 and 2022. Satisfaction stands at 38% among 18-34s, 59% among 35-54s, and 76% among those aged 55+.

Prince William: Satisfaction with Prince William is even higher at 71%, with just 14% dissatisfied (although this is still lower than his peak as Duke of Cambridge in 2012 when 89% were satisfied with the way he was doing his job). Satisfaction stands at 47% among 18-34s, 73% among 35-54s, and 87% among those aged 55+.

Looking to the future

Six in ten (60%) of Britons still say the monarchy has an important role to play in the future of Britain, while 30% does not. While this still shows a majority expect the Royal Family to be an important part of British life, this is slightly lower than previously recorded in 1999-2000, when an average of 67% felt the monarchy had an important role to play in the future. Again there are differences by age, with only 4 in 10 (38%) of 18-34 year olds believing the monarchy still has an important role to play, rising to 62% of those aged 35-54 and 74% of those aged 55+.

Gideon Skinner, Senior Director of UK Political Research at Ipsos, said:

Ipsos’ latest research on public attitudes to the monarchy reveals an ongoing trend that the Royal Family should not ignore. While the majority of the country remains pro-monarchy, and outnumbers republicans by 2:1, support for the institution is the lowest we have measured for 33 years. This is underpinned by a growing age gap in views, with younger generations now more republican than monarchist, and even middle-aged people much less supportive than at the peak of the Royals’ popularity in the Diamond Jubilee year of 2012.

The monarchy still has its strengths, and King Charles and especially Prince William remain personally popular with satisfaction ratings that most politicians could only dream of. But to turn this trend around will require convincing young people in particular that the monarchy still has an important, relevant role to play in the future of the country.

Ipsos interviewed a representative probability sample of 1,062 British adults aged 18+, via the Ipsos UK KnowledgePanel. Data was collected between the 5th -11th March 2026. Panel members are recruited via random probability sampling, by sending letters to randomly selected addresses, which invites them to join an online panel. This approach means every household in the UK had a known and non-zero chance of being selected to join the KnowledgePanel.

Those who are digitally excluded are provided with a tablet and free, restricted data connection. A sample of 2,226 adults aged 18+ were invited to take part in the survey. The sample was stratified by nation, age, qualifications and vote at the 2024 general election (as collected immediately after the election). The achieved sample was weighted in two stages:

Design weights were applied to correct for the unequal probabilities of a person being selected for a survey, notably residents in smaller households have a higher chance of being selected.

Calibration weights were applied through rim weighting to correct for differential non-response. Data was weighted to the adult population profile on age and gender, Government Office region, ethnicity, qualifications, work status and work sector (public sector/other), social grade (office coded), number of cars in household, constituency type, and newspaper readership (print and digital). Population targets were obtained from the 2021/22 Census, ONS population estimates and other large-scale probability surveys.

All polls are subject to a wide range of potential sources of error. Note that this is a new methodology implemented since June 2025. It involves a new form of data collection (online random probability panel instead of quota telephone survey), and an updated weighting scheme. This means that comparisons with previous waves need to be made with caution.

IDF captures Hezbollah drone factory and launch site hidden inside south Lebanon mountain

MAJDAL ZOUN, Lebanon — Buried beneath a hilltop village in southern Lebanon, just kilometers from the Israeli border, the Hezbollah terror group built an underground drone “airbase” from which it launched Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles at Israel.

The subterranean facility, guarded by massive steel blast doors, was built in the past decade with direct Iranian assistance, including planning and funding, Israeli military officials told The Times of Israel during an organized media tour of the site last week.

Journalists were brought into Lebanon at dusk, so that the visit to the tunnel would take place under the cover of darkness — an attempt by the military to mitigate the possibility of Hezbollah attacks on members of the press.

As the sun set over the Mediterranean, reporters were driven in a convoy of Humvees along the Lebanese coast before heading east toward Majdal Zoun, some six kilometers (3.7 miles) from the Israeli frontier.

With just the moonlight and glowsticks to illuminate the way, soldiers led the group to the tunnel’s main entrance, which was accessible from the ground level on the north side of the mountain.

The tunnel and surrounding area, which was delineated as part of the southern Lebanon security zone buffer area in an updated IDF map Thursday, were captured this month by a reservist commando and paratroopers formation.

The operation took place amid a porous ceasefire in which both Israel and Hezbollah have continued to attack each other.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, the tunnel runs several hundred meters into the mountain, reaching depths of 29 meters (95 feet) under Majdal Zoun — including beneath a mosque.

The IDF has uncovered similar Hezbollah tunnels in southern Lebanon in the past, but commanders said this one was built to a “much higher standard,” comparable with an underground Iranian missile factory in Syria that the military raided in September 2024.

Soldiers and officers were made available to the tour on condition of anonymity, in line with military protocol.

Inside the tunnel, which was wide enough for a standard vehicle to drive through, Hezbollah had assembled Iranian-made drones using parts smuggled into Lebanon, according to the army.

Iran, which has invested heavily in drone development and production, has long been understood to supply its Lebanese proxy group with missiles and other arms meant to be used against Israel.

After capturing the tunnel, soldiers found around 50 UAVs with warheads of around 30 kilograms (66 pounds) of explosives apiece, officers said.

The drones appeared to be of the same type used in attacks on Israel, such as a deadly October 2024 strike on the Golani Brigade’s training base. They can typically fly 200 to 500 kilometers (125 to 310 miles), enough to reach all of Israel, according to IDF officials. Military analyst Fabian Hinz identified the UAVs as an Iranian drone design, known as the Qasef in the service of the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.

The capture of the tunnel marked the first time that the IDF had access to fully intact Iranian drones of this kind, providing the military with valuable intelligence, one officer told The Times of Israel.

The drones, in various states of assembly, were placed on display along the tunnel’s concrete walls for journalists on the tour to see.

The Iranian negotiating team refused to take part in a planned joint photo opportunity with the US delegation before talks in Geneva, a source close to the negotiations told Tasnim News Agency.

The source said US officials and organizers had planned a handshake and group photo between the two sides, but the Iranian delegation declined to participate. “My first message to President Trump is first to congratulate him for his action on peace,” Sall said in a phone interview ahead of a recent trip to Washington.“He’s a peace builder, even if sometimes we have some problems today with Iran, but what he did is huge on one year of peace in the world, around the world, and he has to continue this process to be and to stay a peace builder.

Sall is one of several candidates to succeed António Guterres as Secretary General of the United Nations. Security Council members and then gain enough support from leaders around the world to win. Whoever wins will take over in January and serve a five-year term. Sall, whose nation Senegal is very close with France, has support from the French and makes clear he has close relations from his time as president with all of the major world leaders especially the permanent Security Council members, which are the called the P5 of the United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom. The fact that Sall is openly embracing the idea of “MUNGA,” or “Make the UN Great Again,” is a significant development that closely mirrors what Trump and his team are trying to do at the behemoth world diplomacy forum that they argue has lost its way. Late last year, Trump’s U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz sat for a lengthy exclusive interview with Breitbart News on the floor of the UNGA to detail the vision for MUNGA — Making the UN Great Again — in which he explained a lot of this has to do with spending cuts and eliminating woke or redundant mandates.

Sall, in his interview with Breitbart News, openly embraced that vision. After more than six months of study and deliberation, the Pulitzer Prize Board has decided it will not revoke the foreign reporting prize awarded in 1932 to Walter Duranty of The New York Times.

In recent months, much attention has been paid to Mr. Duranty's dispatches regarding the famine in the Soviet Union in 1932-1933, which have been criticized as gravely defective. However, a Pulitzer Prize for reporting is awarded not for the author's body of work or for the author's character but for the specific pieces entered in the competition. Therefore, the board focused its attention on the 13 articles that actually won the prize, articles written and published during 1931. In its review of the 13 articles, the Board determined that Mr. Duranty's 1931 work, measured by today's standards for foreign reporting, falls seriously short.KEK!!In that regard, the Board's view is similar to that of The New York Times itself and of some scholars who have examined his 1931 reports. However, the board concluded that there was not clear and convincing evidence of deliberate deception, the relevant standard in this case. Revoking a prize 71 years after it was awarded under different circumstances, when all principals are dead and unable to respond, would be a momentous step and therefore would have to rise to that threshold.

The famine of 1932-1933 was horrific and has not received the international attention it deserves. By its decision, the board in no way wishes to diminish the gravity of that loss. Vance Lands in Switzerland for Iran Talks as Strait of Hormuz Tensions Boil

Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland on Sunday morning for the first direct U.S.-Iran talks since the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

The negotiations will play out against a backdrop of rising tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and renewed fighting between the Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorist group and Israel threatened to upend the fragile diplomatic process.

Speaking before departing, Vance saidthe talks would focus on advancing negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and shoring up the fragile ceasefire in Lebanon, where escalating violence forced the postponement of the discussions from Friday.

“I think we’re going to hopefully make progress on the nuclear issue, make progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue,” Vance told reporters. “Those are the two big things that I think we’re going to be focused on.”

Vance said the initial meetings were aimed at establishing the structure of negotiations, while technical-level discussions could continue in Switzerland after the high-level talks conclude.

Vance said he expected to remain in Switzerland “for a day or two” and indicated that the initial round of meetings would be focused on laying the groundwork for broader negotiations that could extend beyond the high-level discussions.

President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff had already arrived in Switzerland ahead of the talks. Vance said he had spoken with both men and that, “My understanding is that things are going well.”

A high-level Iranian delegation also traveled to Switzerland on Saturday.Iranian media reported that the delegation is being led by parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, senior security officials, and central bank and oil officials.

Pakistan and Qatar, which helped mediate the interim agreement between Washington and Tehran, are also participating in the discussions. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir departed Islamabad for Switzerland on Saturday accompanied by a high-level delegation.

The talks were originally scheduled to begin Friday but were delayed after a new escalation in Lebanon threatened to derail the diplomatic process.

Iran said Saturday that it had closed the Strait of Hormuz because of Israeli military operations in Lebanon, accusing the United States of failing to uphold commitments contained in the memorandum of understanding, which calls for the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.

Iran’s top military command described the closure as the “first step” in response to what it characterized as breaches of commitmentsby Washington and Israel. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy also warned ships not to approach the strategic waterway.

The United States quickly disputed Iran’s claim that it had effectively shut the strategic waterway.

“Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz. Traffic continues to flow, and U.S. forces are monitoring the situation to ensure this remains the case,” U.S. Central Command spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins said.

An official from the Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorist organization told The Associated Press that Tehran would not reopen the strait unless Israel publicly commits to a comprehensive ceasefire in Lebanon and ends military operations there.

Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter said Fridaythat Israel “remains firmly committed to an immediate ceasefire” and that “if Hezbollah honors the agreement and ceases its hostilities, they will be met with quiet.”

Israeli officials said Hezbollah launched more than 50 projectiles at Israeli forces overnight and that five Israeli soldiers had been killed in southern Lebanon over the previous 48 hours.

Trump also weighed in on the growing dispute over the strategic waterway, writing Saturday on Truth Social that there would be “NO TOLLS in the Hormuz Strait for 60 days during the Cease Fire Period.”

The president added that no tolls would be imposed afterward either, “unless they are imposed by and for the United States of America, should the deal not be completed, for services rendered as the Guardian Angel to the countries of the Middle East.”

The interim memorandum signed last week established a 60-day negotiating window aimed at reaching a broader agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and other unresolved issues.

Vance also argued that Washington enters the talks from a position of strength, saying on Fox & Friends that “the United States wins either way” and that the outcome of negotiations is “very much up to the Iranians.”

“Do they want to behave better? If so, great. If they don’t want to behave better, the President of the United States still has a whole lot of options from here,” he said.

Fellow panelist Tom Dupree, a former principal deputy assistant attorney general, agreed,saying it probably would ultimately take a constitutional amendment to end birthright citizenship in the United States, adding that many courts held that the 14th Amendment set that standard.

“I think the administration knew going into this that this was going to be a heavy lift for them, precisely for that reason,”Dupree said. “Judges year after year, decade after decade, have said that birthright citizenship is enshrined in our Constitution. “I think, from oral arguments, it seemed to me that they were going to say that ‘federal election day’ means election day, and having this debacle in California — extending the counting for so long — only sort of reaffirms the logic of that,” Turley said. “Now, this is for federal elections. So for dual election — state and federal — it can get a little bit wicked if you want to try to give people extra time. But if the Court rules that ‘Election Day’ means election day, those ballots have got to be in on that day.”

Republicans expressed skepticism after socialist Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman pulled ahead of reality star Spencer Pratt on the strength of “late ballot drops.” Dupree, who worked in the Office of Legal Counsel at the Justice Department, said the ruling could have another effect.

“It definitely would call into question the permissibility of early voting. I think for this case, this decision, it only concerns those late-arriving ballots, so I think this decision is going to be somewhat narrow in that sense,” Dupree said. “But you’re absolutely right that if the Court says ‘Election Day’ means Election Day — everything’s got to be done on this one particular day — arguably it would call into question early voting because those are coming in before Election Day.”
