NASA Tests FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Ball Trionda In ISS Microgravity Experiment | Video

Houston: The official match ball for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Trionda, has reached space, with astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) conducting experiments to study football dynamics and ball performance in microgravity.

Sharing images and details of the experiment, in a post on Instagram, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said the ISS crew recreated a 2019 study using the Adidas-made Trionda football to examine how balance and centre of mass affect a ball's movement.

"The official FIFA World Cup ball went to space," NASA said, adding that sports engineers carefully measure and optimise a football's centre of mass and balance to ensure predictable movement during play.

According to the space agency, the crew repeated the experiment to demonstrate the effects of good and poor balance in football. The findings have helped researchers better understand how embedded technologies, including match-ball sensors, can influence performance on the field.

"Helping to improve the beautiful game is just one of the ways NASA science done on the International Space Station makes life better for people on Earth," NASA said in the post.

The Trionda is the official match ball of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and was developed by Adidas.

According to FIFA, the ball's name is derived from the Spanish phrase meaning "three waves", symbolising the first-ever FIFA World Cup to be jointly hosted by three nations - Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Its design features red, green and blue colours representing the three host countries, while a four-panel construction with fluid geometry forms a triangle at the centre of the ball, reflecting the unity of the host nations.

The ball also incorporates symbols associated with each country, including a maple leaf for Canada, an eagle for Mexico and a star for the United States.

FIFA said Trionda includes several technological innovations aimed at improving performance, including deep seams for enhanced flight stability and embossed surface details that improve grip in wet conditions.

The ball is also equipped with advanced connected-ball technology, featuring a 500Hz motion sensor chip that transmits real-time movement data to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

The technology is designed to assist match officials with decision-making, including offside calls and other key incidents during matches.

The experiment marks a unique intersection of sports science and space research, with the World Cup's official ball becoming the latest sporting equipment to be tested aboard the ISS.

The summer solstice occurred at 4:24 a.m. EDT (0824 GMT) on June 21, as Earth's north pole reached its most extreme tilt towards the sun in its yearly orbit, bathing the northern hemisphere in its light.

As such, June 21 marks the start of astronomical summer, which is calculated based on the position of Earth relative to the sun, as opposed to meteorological summer, which is based on temperature and runs from the beginning of June through to the end of August.

How much daylight you receive depends largely on your latitude. According to veteran meteorologist and Space.com columnist Joe Rao, it's all a question of latitude.

"At the equator, the time from sunrise to sunset is about 12 hours. At temperate or mid-northern latitudes (approximately 40 degrees north) the length of daylight lasts about 15 hours," said Rao in an article for Space.com

The effect of Earth's tilt is even more pronounced 66.5 degrees north of the equator in the Arctic Circle, where the sun won't set below the horizon at all, heralding a full 24 hours of daylight, often called the midnight sun.

(AFP) —King Charles III will reveal his personal tax bill in a bid to improve transparency, Buckingham Palace confirmed to AFP on Sunday, as royal finances come under increasing public scrutiny in Britain.

British monarchs are legally exempt from paying certain taxes, though they have paid some duties voluntarily for decades.

They also have no obligation to disclose their private tax bills, but recent scandals surrounding the disgraced former prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor have thrust the royal family’s finances into the spotlight.

Charles began releasing his personal tax information when he was heir to the throne, but will become the first monarch to disclose it.

“The decision to do so as Sovereign has come at the express wish of the King himself,” a palace spokesperson said in a statement released late Saturday to a limited number of British media outlets.

It added that the move was “part of the adaptations carried across” since Charles acceded to the throne in 2022.

“Our aim is to explain all elements of royal finances in a way that further enhances clarity and accessibility, while also placing it in its historical and constitutional context.

“To put it simply: we continue to modernise and evolve.”

Charles’s tax information will be shared on Thursday as part of the release of annual royal financial accounts, the BBC reported.

The head of the royal family gets money from various sources, including the publicly-funded Sovereign Grant as well as private duchy income worth tens of millions of pounds more.

The grant — an annual government payment to cover the costs of official duties by working royals —has increased markedly in 2025-2026, to £132.1 million ($175 million), compared with £86.3 million the prior financial year.

Meanwhile,Charles received £26.8 million in private income from the Duchy of Lancaster in 2024-25.

Profits from thehistoric duchy — a large, diversified portfolio of land, property, and investments managed like a modern business — funds personal expenses and some official duties.

It is the main source of private income for the head of the monarchy, with the heir — currently Charles’seldest son William, Prince of Wales — benefiting from a similar arrangement with his Duchy of Cornwall.

Under UK law, monarchs do not have to pay income, capital gains or inheritance taxes.

While people on Earth enjoy the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, China's Shenzhen-23 crew – Zhu Yangzhu, Zhang Zhiyuan and Li Jiaying (also known as Lai Ka-ying) – remain busy working at the space station at an altitude of more than 400 kilometers.

During the past week, the Shenzhou-23 crew carried out a series of scientific experiments across multiple disciplines.

They used the space-based Raman spectrometer for their research on microbiome and nutritional metabolism, analyzing metabolites in urine samples to study how the gut microbiome changes during long-duration spaceflight and how it affects nutrient metabolism.

The trio also conducted behavioral experiments in visual motion processing and microgravity intuitive physics to explore how gravity influences visual information processing and the mechanisms behind the impacts of long-duration flight on intuitive physical perception and its recovery.

In addition, the astronauts carried out studies on in-orbit emotional recognition and evaluation, as well as testing of emergency decision-making capabilities, to understand the changing rules of emotional states and emergency response abilities.

Besides scientific experiments, the crew also performed maintenance tasks, including replacing experimental samples in fluid cabinets, disassembling and reassembling phase-two experiment modules, installing the infrared thermal imaging device, and processing downlink samples related to space-based symbiotic research on aquatic organisms and plants.

First in-orbit medical rescue training

Last week, the crew carried out their first in-orbit medical emergency training since entering orbit, focusing on adapting rescue procedures and force application techniques to a microgravity environment.

On the station's platform systems, they measured cabin airflow, temperature and air cleanliness, collected microbiological samples, inspected and maintained regenerative life-support systems, checked low-temperature storage equipment, and replaced a door in the core module's sleeping compartments.

For health management, the astronauts completed vision, intraocular pressure and fundus examinations. They also used a bone-loss countermeasure device for protective exercises.

The televised press conference took a nasty turn when Zelensky criticized Trump’s efforts to mediate a settlement with Moscow rather than increase military support for Kiev.

Zelensky was eventually “asked to leave” the White House, while the deal was signed without much fanfare two months later.

Zelensky, who has since held several meetings with Trump to mend ties and even started wearing a custom all-black, military-style suit jacket, remains “somewhat traumatized by his train crash” almost a year later, according to Politico.

A massive overnight barrage of Ukrainian drones has successfully struck the TES-Terminal-1 oil facility in the occupied Crimean port of Kerch.

The high-stakes operation has dealt a significant blow to the military logistics backbone supporting Russian forces on the peninsula.

The targeted facility serves as a vital artery for Moscow's war effort, managing the receiving, storage, and transshipment of petroleum products between rail lines, storage tanks, and maritime tankers.

Crucially, the terminal also refuels vessels and powers the ferry crossing over the Kerch Strait, connecting mainland Russia to occupied Crimea.

Following the strikes, multiple large fires broke out at the port terminal, forcing regional authorities to completely suspend civilian fuel sales at Crimean gas stations to preserve dwindling stocks for state and military use.

The strategic strike was part of a broader, coordinated campaign by Ukraine's Unmanned Systems and Special Operations Forces targeting assets roughly 300 kilometers behind the front lines.

In addition to targeting maritime fuel hubs on both sides of the Kerch Strait, the wave of drones successfully knocked out key Russian air defenses shielding the area, damaging four radar stations belonging to advanced S-400 systems and destroying two Pantsir missile units.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that targets in Russia’s Krasnodar region and in annexed Crimea had been attacked.

In a Facebook post, Zelensky said that “last night, our long-range sanctions were applied against the occupiers’ military logistics, oil industry and air defense systems.

Facilities on both sides of the Crimean Bridge were hit: maritime logistics used for transporting oil in Krasnodar region and an oil depot in temporarily occupied Kerch.”

Zelensky also added that Russian military logistics facilities were struck, along with four radar stations that are part of S-400 systems and two Pantsir air defense systems.

The controversy began over the weekend when the X account “Republicans Against Trump” sought negative comments about Trump’s 80th birthday on Saturday.

“Donald Trump turns 80 today. Any birthday wishes?” the account asked.

An account bearing the name Bob Greene responded with a message that quickly went viral online.

“A nice stroke that turns him into a drooling, pooping blob in a wheelchair unable to speak,” the account wrote.

The exchange was screenshotted and shared by the X account Libs of TikTok,which identified Greene as the board chair of Rocky Mountain PBS.

Libs of TikTok later posted what it said was a response from Rocky Mountain Public Media. According to the statement, the organization said it was aware of Greene’s post.Rocky Mountain Public Media said Greene’s comment did not reflect its values or opinions.

It further stated that “this level of discourse is never constructive to our collective efforts to strengthen the civic fabric of Colorado.” The message was signed by Christina “Chris” Dayyani and included gender pronouns in the signature.

UPDATE: @PBS confirms to me that Board Chair Bob Greene violated their social media guidelines when he wished for Trump to get an illness with a permanent disability.

We asked if he will face consequences or accountability for these comments, and they did not respond.
