Sputnik tested the president's leadership, and just as during D-Day, Eisenhower rose to the challenge.

To speed up U.S. satellite endeavors, he green-lighted the use of a special Army rocket, the Jupiter C, to launch America's first satellite, Explorer I, which lifted off from Cape Canaveral in January 1958, just four months after Sputnik.

Eisenhower used a new electronic medium—television—to give two live primetime addresses on "Science in National Security," during which he tried to allay fears that the U.S. trailed the Soviet Union in these arenas.

(Eisenhower later became the first president to win an Emmy, awarded for his use of television.)

Eisenhower signed the National Defense Education Act, which encouraged students to study science and engineering in college and graduate school.

He created a new Presidential Science Advisory Committee and appointed the first-ever presidential science advisor, James Killian, the president of MIT.

All chief executives since Eisenhower have had science advisors, keeping presidents — who rarely come from science backgrounds — current with developments in the modern, technological world.

Perhaps the greatest action Eisenhower took after Sputnik, came in July 1958. That month, he signed legislation creating NASA.

The new space agency gave direction to America's efforts in the cosmos and brought order to the chaotic welter of competing rocket projects that the Pentagon — where all of the nation's space activities had resided — tried to control.

In 1959, NASA announced Project Mercury, an ambitious program to send humans into space, and by the end of Eisenhower's presidency, the U.S. had launched 31 satellites, whereas the Soviet Union had just 9.

As a five-star general, President Eisenhower yearned to harness science to bolster America's defenses. He approved the first U.S. spy satellite, Corona, which monitored Soviet defenses and military installations.

He also presided over the development of new ICBM rockets, which maintained a precarious Cold War balance of power with the U.S.S.R. through the concept of mutually assured destruction.

These 1950s developments were all grounded in the blossoming of science that occurred after WWII, the effects of which we witness on the Space Coast today. Here, NASA looms large, as do defense contractors.

The Florida Institute of Technology, a STEM school founded in 1958, bears eloquent testimony to science's preponderant importance here. As president, Eisenhower encouraged science's place in the White House and the nation.

The D-Day meteorology reports, dramatically depicted in Pressure, strengthened his appreciation of science. In a real sense, science helped to win World War II.

But once in the White House, Eisenhower, who entitled one volume of his presidential memoirs Waging Peace, used science to achieve peace, helping to keep the Cold War "cold" and win it.

These legacies benefit Space Coast residents — and all Americans — more than eighty years after D-Day.

“Our adversaries are constantly working to take away our military and economic advantages in the space domain. To defend our nation’s interests in space, the Space Force must do more than grow, we must evolve to meet the challenges of this new era,” Saltzman said.

The speed of change and the importance of space are unchanging realities, Saltzman said in explaining why the 130% increase in the Space Force’s proposed budget is necessary.

“The Space Force we have today is not the Space Force we will need in the future,” he said.

By Senate standards, the hearing moved along at a brisk pace, ending in 90 minutes. Among the topics raised by senators were multiple questions about drones and base protection and how Ukraine’s expertise can be used to better defend against those threats.

Meink told senators the department is already studying the lessons learned from the war in Ukraine. Other questions touched on tankers and the expected delivery rate for the new KC-46 tanker, as well as how CCAs will be delivered and used. Senators asked about the reliability and readiness of the F-35, a plane Wilsbach said is performing well in the Iran conflict.

Several senators expressed concern about Congress failing to produce and pass a spending plan and having to rely once again on a continuing resolution that reverts spending to current levels.

Meink said being forced to operate under a CR “would have significant impacts on readiness,” operations and necessary modernization.

All three leaders highlighted a critical, but often less glamorous, focus on acquisition reform to ensure every dollar is spent wisely and with speed.

In that regard, Meink, Wilsbach and Saltzman each mentioned giving more authority to portfolio acquisition executives to make decisions and act more independently so projects move with less bureaucratic weight and more speed.

“We are empowering our new portfolio acquisition executives, and their teams, with the authorities, resources, and talent they need to accelerate capability delivery,” Meink said.

“We have delegated nearly every authority we are legally allowed to do so down to the PAEs. We are re-aligning portfolios to match mission outcomes.

Our end state is all DAF acquisitions aligned within the PAE structure to ensure consistent, simplified, and rapid decision-making across the Space Force and Air Force.”

For the Space Force, Saltzman emphasized that the 6-year-old service continues “creating some of these innovative capabilities for new missions from the ground up.”

That effort includes “investing in all categories of counterspace systems necessary to deter and defeat aggression in space.

“Additionally, we are aggressively pursuing more resilient space architectures that can withstand attacks and continue to operate through extended conflict,” he said, describing the budget request as “a generational opportunity to position the force to meet the rapidly expanding threats and demands of the nation.”

Saltzman also signaled that the near term is a pivot point for the country’s newest military service. “The Space Force has laid the organizational foundation, defined the compounding threat, and delivered the blueprint required to counter it.

“Now,” he told senators, “we must build those structures and systems to ensure domain superiority for years to come.”

Murray,born in 1943, is perhaps best known for his work at the American Enterprise Institute.

Murray explains to van Maren that while the United States hasalways had rich people and poor people, ithasn’t had “a new upper classwhich saw itself asculturally distinct from the rest of America.”(You just need to have to see the rich that were very happy with Charlie’s shooting death to understand that)

Murray argues thatwhat makes the elites of today radically differentfrom those of the past is thatthey are isolated from the rest of the country, and that their family life, leisure time, andbasic cultural norms are not in stepwith middle- andlower-class Americans, whomthey view with condescension and derision__.

“I’m not talking about a left liberal upper class versus a different kind of conservative upper class.I’m talking about a difference in culture,” Murray explains.

“The new upper class is likely to be very dismissive of the traditional two-parent familiesin their writings [yet they] still get married in large numbers and they have their children within marriage and they behave, in terms of child upbringing, very responsibly.” (Statistics show they have a much higher divorce rate.)

That sort of reality is “very alien in low-income America, where you have very high proportions of children being born out of wedlock, people not getting married,” he said.

“Very low-income people,” Murray continued, “have dropped out of participation in the basic institutions of American life.” Previously, “there were all sorts of ways in which people with low incomes were full participants inAmerican society…that's changed.”

Some of the most obvious differences betweenthe new upper class and ordinary Americans is that they listen to NPR, watch some television but not much, and get married in their 30s. They also go on vacation, but not in places like Northern Minnesota. Rather, they go scuba diving.

“They show very little interest in trying to become less isolated from the rest of the country,” Murray argued.

“How has this change come about?” van Maren asked the conservative sociologist during their 45-minute exchange.

Murray said anumber of factorshave contributed, but thatultimately shiftsin theentertainmentindustry,university admissions, andeconomic policieshave all played a role.

Ridiculing organized religion, looking down on laborers who work with their hands, and a general de-emphasizing of the importance of family have also led to the chasm between the new upper class and the new lower class.

Murray saysAmerica is sorely in need of someone who can restore it to the original vision the Founding Fathers laid out for it.(PDJT came)

“Highly secular societies are going to break down,” he said.America needs a leader who can “start to restore some of the institutions … and make a huge change in the middle… but you can’t manufacture great people, male or female, just because you need it. REPORT: Here Are The Names Being Floated to Trump for Director of National Intelligence

President Trump is currently interviewing a few different people to replace Tulsi Gabbard as the Director of National Intelligence.

Bill Pulte, the federal housing regulator, is currently serving as the Acting DNI, however, President Trump said Pulte will not be in the role permanently.

According to Semafor, GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik, Deputy Director of the CIA Michael Ellis and others are in the running to replace Pulte.
