Those targets include Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook and New York Attorney General Letitia James, who both faced allegations of mortgage-related wrongdoing by Pulte.

Trump said that Pulte will serve as acting DNI while continuing to work as FHFA director and chairman of the mortgage groups Fannie Mae

and Freddie Mac. Pulte is replacing outgoing DNI Tulsi Gabbard, who said last month that she would resign June 30.

Tillis told CNBC that Pulte “got removed from his family board the moment the family no longer owned 51%,” and later made such critical statements “that his father and aunt disavowed him having any association with their family trust.”

Tillis was referring to reports that Pulte, a scion of the founder of homebuilding giant PulteGroup, was pushed off the company’s board in 2020 amid disagreements with other directors. The senator also appeared to reference a statement from the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation, clarifying that Bill Pulte, who maintains a highly active social media presence, does not speak for his family “in any capacity.”

“Why do I bring that up? I bring it up because it suggests a temperament that’s probably not right for the DNI role,” Tillis said.

“I don’t believe he’s ever had a security clearance. He clearly has no experience in intelligence, he has no geopolitical experience, no international connections — the sorts of things you would look for” in a DNI, said Tillis.

“He’s got a structural problem. He simply doesn’t have 51 votes on the Senate floor, and he may not even have the votes in [the Senate intelligence] committee, and we just need to tell the president that clearly,” the senator said.

Tillis isn’t the only Republican to voice concerns about Pulte.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., who lost his primary election last month after Trump backed a rival Republican, said during an interview Tuesday at CNBC’s CEO Council Summit that Pulte does not appear “competent” to serve as acting DNI.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told reporters on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, “We don’t need a weaponized DNI, we need professionals there.”

The White House and the FHFA did not immediately respond to CNBC’s requests for comment.

Tillis also on CNBC suggested that Pulte’s promotion could further imperil efforts to get Congress to pass key legislation — some of which has already been jeopardized by other controversies, such as the now-scrapped $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund.”

“They need to understand timing,” he said of the Trump administration. “My God, you put forth this restitution fund when we’re trying to get Homeland Security funded for three years, and you think that’s going to go well in the same week.”

“Then you want to get [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Section] 702 authorized, and you put an incendiary attack dog like Pulte out on the agenda,” he said.

“Whoever these people are in the White House need to get the hell out of the White House,” Tillis said. “I am tired of amateur hour.”

On the night of June 1, 2026, journalist @NickSortor drove to Delaney Hall expecting what he'd seen for ten straight days: hundreds of protesters surrounding Newark's 1,000-bed ICE detention facility, human chains blocking federal vehicles, pepper balls and tear gas, helmets and gas masks distributed from organized supply stations, catered meals arriving on schedule. No negotiation, no vote, no gradual loss of enthusiasm. Some switch had been flipped off.

The natural question is how a protest of that size can be turned off with one message. The answer is that it was never a protest in the way most people understand the word. It was an operation — assembled, maintained, and disbanded through an organizational structure that looks, once you map it, like a military deployment with a nonprofit org chart.

This release includes estimates of the number and rate of job openings, hires, and separations for the

COUNTY EMPLOYMENT AND WAGES – FOURTH QUARTER 2025

From December 2024 to December 2025, employment increased in 169 of the 372 largest U.S. counties, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. In December 2025, national employment increased to 156.7 million, a 0.2-percent increase over the year, as measured by the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program. Buncombe, NC, had the largest over-the-year increase in employment, with a gain of 3.7 percent. Employment data in this release are presented for December 2025, and average weekly wage data are presented for fourth quarter 2025.

Among the 372 largest counties, 346 had over-the-year increases in average weekly wages. In the fourth quarter of 2025, average weekly wages for the nation increased to $1,569, a 4.2-percent increase over the year. San Mateo, CA, had the largest fourth quarter over-the-year wage gain at 11.1 percent. (See table 1.)

California’s race for governor and other key primaries remain unsettled as vote count continues

Republican Steve Hilton and Democrats Xavier Becerra and Tom Steyer have separated from the pack in the governor’s race. Important House races are still too early to call as well.

California’s crowded, protracted gubernatorial primary isgoing to take a little more time to settle.

The race remained too early to call Wednesday morning with less than 60% of the expected vote counted, according to NBC News’ Decision Desk. Three main candidates — former Fox News host Steve Hilton, a Republican, and two Democrats, former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and billionaire activist Tom Steyer — are competing for two spots in the general election, with the candidate in fourth place, Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, running well behind.

Hilton had 28% support in the all-party primary, while Becerra had 25% and Steyer had 20%. Bianco was the only other candidate in double digits, at 11%.

In California, all candidates run on the same primary ballot in the primary and the top two vote-getters, regardless of party, move on to the general election.

It’s difficult to say when it will be clear which two candidates advance to the November general election, however, due to the state’s protracted vote counting.

And with millions of ballots left to count, other key races in California remain uncalled as well, including the second runoff spot to face Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass one on one in November, several House races that could help determine the majority next year and more.

In the governor’s race, all three candidates rallied supporters around the state as the evening drew on.

“We’re not there yet, but it’s looking good,” Hilton told allies. “It looks very much as if Californians really will have the chance to vote for change in November and take our state in a new direction, a fresh start for our state, which is long overdue.”

But while Hilton was narrowly in first place when he spoke, Democratic candidates were capturing the majority of the votes.

Becerra looked back at his own “underdog story,” from his immigrant family to his bid for governor, which took some time to catch fire.

“Almost immediately, he’s counted out, an afterthought, overlooked by many, outspent by a ton, even called along the way to drop out and save us the trouble,” Becerra recounted to his supporters. “Well, guess what? The underdog stayed in the fight. Like my parents, I never gave up.”

Steyer struck ahopeful note in his election night speech despite a deficit in the vote count.

“It might take some time to figure out where this is going, we’re going to wait till every ballot is counted, we’re going to give democracy a time to work, and we know we finished really strong,” Steyer said. (Steyer and Dems know they are losing but CA cheats. If Steyer etc win, another example of why even have elections there.)

Major battleground districts

GOP Rep. David Valadao’s district has been one of Democrats’ top targets for years, but two Democrats are locked in a close race for the second spot in the November general election against the incumbent.

School board member Randy Villegas, who won support from national progressives, has a slight lead over state legislator Jasmeet Bains, 30% to 26%, with less than half of the expected vote tallied in the 22nd District. Valadao is comfortably in first place.

Munster and Kwe were inspected and interviewed by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials upon their arrival. CBP officers observed Kwe and Munster traveling with a large black plastic case. We propagated measurement uncertainty through a million Monte-Carlo realizations using the empirical post-2018 low-discrepancy CNEOS error model (reported in a 2025 paper, accessible here).

No realization yielded a bound heliocentric orbit, giving a statistical confidence on the interstellar origin of Polar-IM of more than 99.9997%. The Monte-Carlo statistical confidence corresponds to a 12.82-σ margin-to-scatter ratio under the adopted error model.

The telescopic discoveries of the interstellar objects 1I/`Oumuamua, 2I/Borisov, and 3I/ATLAS, demonstrated that large interstellar objects transit the inner Solar System.

Population models predict many more meter-scale interstellar objects entering at rates potentially detectable with existing monitoring networks.

Although these small bodies evade telescopic detection, they can reveal themselves as fireballs when they enter Earth’s atmosphere and generate a fireball as a result of their friction on air.

The inferred velocity of Polar-IM is very reasonable for an interstellar origin.

Polar IM is the most robust interstellar meteor in the CNEOS catalog so far, as our analysis identifies its interstellar origin with a statistical confidence of over 99.9997%.

The reported Polar-IM coordinates place the event over the South Atlantic Ocean, east of Argentina. The impact energy is modest, only 0.086 kiloton TNT equivalent, and the reported altitude is high, 90.5 kilometers.

These two facts make material recovery less straightforward than in the impact site of a larger, lower-altitude bolide such as the 2014 interstellar meteor, IM1, where I led an ocean expedition in June 2023 that resulted in chemical analysis of recovered molten fragments (as reported here). The Polar-IM event may have fragmented high in the atmosphere, and any surviving material would require a fall-ellipse calculation before the feasibility of a search could be assessed.

Given its impact energy and speed, Polar-IM had a mass of about 150 kilograms and a diameter of roughly half a meter.

The first follow-up priority is therefore a higher-fidelity reconstruction rather than an expedition, with a goal to: (1) produce targeted uncertainty-inflation and tail-sampling tests for the velocity errors required to cross the threshold for interstellar identification; (2) back-integrate the trajectory with a more detailed Earth-Moon-Sun model; (3) refine the inbound velocity vector; and (4) if warranted, model atmospheric entry, fragmentation, and wind drift to estimate a fall footprint. Independent validation is especially important because it is the main way to test a gross-outlier failure mode.

Any ground-based optical, infrasound, seismic, satellite, or regional fireball-network observation from 2026–04–01 at 02:13:14 UTC could help verify the velocity measurement of Polar-IM and test its interstellar origin.

Martian light shows

The MAVEN mission discovered several types of auroras that light up when energetic particles plunge into the atmosphere, bombarding gases and making them glow.

The MAVEN team showed that protons create new kinds of auroras at Mars. On Earth, proton auroras only occur in very small regions near the poles, whereas at Mars they can occur everywhere.

Mars’ atmosphere sputters into space

To better understand how Mars lost most of its atmosphere, MAVEN measured atmospheric sputtering for the first time at any planet. The team did this by observing argon, which is a noble gas, meaning it rarely reacts with other constituents in the Martian atmosphere.

The only significant way it can be removed is by atmospheric sputtering, a process where ions crash into the Martian atmosphere at high enough speeds that they splash gas molecules out of the atmosphere, much like doing a cannonball into a pool.

The team used 11 years of data to reveal the presence of sputtered argon at high altitudes in the exact locations that the energetic particles crashed into the atmosphere, showing sputtering in real time.

Understanding Mars’ dusty secrets

In 2018, a series of dust storms created a dust cloud so large that it enveloped the Red Planet.

The MAVEN team studied how this “global” dust storm affected Mars’ upper atmosphere to understand how these events affected the escape of water to space.

It confirmed that heating from dust storms can loft water molecules far higher into the atmosphere than usual, leading to a sudden surge in water lost to space.

Chasing comets

In addition to Martian science, MAVEN contributed to NASA’s effort to observe comet 3I/ATLAS at Mars.

Over the course of 10 days last year, the MAVEN team designed a new observing campaign to capture 3I/ATLAS by taking multiple images of the comet in several wavelengths, much like using various filters on a camera.

Then it snapped high-resolution UV images to identify the hydrogen coming from the comet. By studying a combination of these images, scientists can identify a variety of molecules and better understand the comet’s composition and history.

During the mission’s lifetime, MAVEN’s science team produced more than 800 publications, and additional publications are planned.

In addition to science, the MAVEN spacecraft was an instrumental player in NASA’s Mars Relay Network, communicating data from Mars rovers to Earth. It also holds the solar system record for most data relayed from another planet in a single day.

Path to a lasting ceasefire in Lebanon is obscured by new strikes

The path toward a lasting ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah remained unclear as hostilities continued in Lebanon.

An Israeli strike Wednesday hit a car on a busy highway just south of Beirut, hours before the second day of talks between Lebanon and Israel in Washington were set to take place.

The strike in Khaldeh came without warning, and it was not immediately clear if the person targeted was killed.

Israel and Lebanon on Monday reached a U.S.-brokered agreement in which Israel would not strike Beirut’s southern suburbs and Hezbollah would end its attacks on northern Israel.

The agreement was made hours after Israel announced that it was going to launch strikes across the sprawling urban neighborhoods near the Lebanese capital in what would have been the most intense strikes since a nominal ceasefire went into effect on April 17.

The State Department said progress was made during the first day of talks on Tuesday. Lebanon hopes to widen the scope of the ceasefire so it becomes comprehensive across the country. Israel wants to disarm Hezbollah immediately before the Israeli military ends its operations in Lebanon and withdraws its troops from dozens of villages and towns.

Not long after the strike on Khaldeh, the Israeli military said it intercepted what it called a hostile aircraft coming from southern Lebanon, but it did not immediately blame Hezbollah. Hezbollah has not claimed a cross-border attack since the agreement.

Israeli military warning rattles coastal city

Israeli strikes over southern Lebanon continued, especially in and around the battered cities of Tyre and Nabatiyeh. Two overnight strikes near Tyre, a coastal city, killed four Syrians and two Palestinians.

Israel warned the Christian neighborhoods in Tyre that Hezbollah members were among them. Many Lebanese Shiite Muslims fled to those areas in recent days because they were spared from the aerial bombardment along the Mediterranean coast.

After the warning, the Lebanese army deployed to the Christian district of Tyre in an effort to prevent Israeli attacks there and to show that Hezbollah has no armed presence in the area.

Israel launched an invasion of southern Lebanon days after the latest war was sparked on March 2, when Iran-backed Hezbollah fired rockets toward northern Israel in solidarity with Iran. Israeli troops have pushed deeper into Lebanon over the past week, as Hezbollah continues to claim rocket and drone attacks.

The latest round of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has killed 3,468 people in Lebanon and displaced 1.2 million people. According to Netanyahu’s office, at least 27 Israeli soldiers and a defense contractor have been killed in or near southern Lebanon. Two civilians have also been killed in northern Israel.

Hezbollah’s use of hard-to-detect fiber-optic drones has been deadly for the Israeli military, which is struggling to respond.
