NASA is leading the way to the Moon, but the military won’t be far behind

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Florida—The US military has always been part of NASA’s human spaceflight program.
The first astronauts were nearly all military pilots, and two of the four crew members set to fly around the Moon on NASA’s Artemis II mission were Navy test pilots before joining the astronaut corps.
Artemis II, the first crew mission to the Moon’s vicinity since 1972, is set for launch Wednesday from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Commander Reid Wiseman and pilot Victor Glover, both Navy test pilots, will be at the controls of the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft for the ride to space.
NASA astronaut Christina Koch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen round out the four-person crew.
The mission will depart from NASA property on Florida’s Space Coast, but the Space Force will play an important role in the launch. A range crew from the Space Force will track the SLS rocket as it arcs over the Atlantic Ocean.
Their primary job will be ensuring public safety, with the unenviable responsibility of sending a destruct signal to the rocket if it flies off course.
Thankfully for the astronauts inside the spacecraft, the Orion capsule has an abort rocket to pull it away from an exploding launch vehicle in the event of a catastrophic failure.
An Air Force rescue team is on standby to rapidly deploy and retrieve the Artemis II astronauts if there’s an in-flight abort.
Assuming everything goes well, the Navy has the charge of recovering the Orion spacecraft and its four astronauts at the end of their nine-day flight around the Moon.
These responsibilities are nothing new to the military. The Space Force oversees public safety for every launch from Florida’s Space Coast, whether it’s a military or civilian mission.
The Air Force has a long history of providing rescue support for NASA human spaceflight missions, and the Navy scooped up the Apollo astronauts when they returned from the Moon more than 50 years ago.
Guarding the Moon
What’s new today is that the US military views space as a potential battlefield—a “warfighting domain” in Pentagon parlance.
The great power competition between the United States and China already extends to space. Each nation is developing and demonstrating weapons that could disable or destroy the other’s satellites in orbit, degrading their military capacities on Earth.
Today, potential conflict zones in space are limited to a region between low-Earth orbit and geosynchronous orbit, from a few hundred miles’ altitude up to 22,000 miles.
The Space Force is in the final stages of developing a roadmap for the next 15 years, identifying where the service needs to grow and evolve to respond to changing threats and priorities.
The document hasn’t been released publicly, but Pentagon officials have said it will address the possibility of the Moon or cislunar space, the region of space around the Moon, becoming a theater for military operations.

President Trump signed an executive order in December that, among other things, directs the government to ensure the ability to detect, characterize, and counter threats to US space interests all the way out to the Moon.
Thomas Ainsworth, assistant secretary of the Air Force for space acquisition and integration, believes it is time for the Space Force to expand its reach.
“We do need to begin integrating cislunar capability into the Space Force,” Ainsworth said at an industry conference in March.
“We are serious about that. We are going to be standing up leadership positions and integration points where we can start bringing those technologies in and actually have a plan to execute them going forward.”
A month earlier, in February, the top general in charge of US Space Command shared a similar view.
“This is a location for potential military operations in the future, so at US Space Command, we are very interested in being able to track what’s happening in cislunar space,” said Gen. Stephen Whiting.
“NASA is about to take us back to the Moon with the Artemis II mission, and then the follow-on missions go back to the surface.
The Chinese are operating in cislunar space with some of their launches. And, of course, they have aspirations to go back with humans on the surface as well.”
Military units operating under the auspices of Space Command will turn their attention toward Artemis II as it transits to the Moon.
Whiting said Space Command will use the opportunity to rehearse and refine tactics, techniques, and procedures by tracking the spacecraft’s location and maneuvers.
“Any time we know something is going to the Moon, we’re going to use it,” Whiting told Ars in February.
Space Command is one of the military’s combatant commands. Central Command covers the Middle East, Northern Command operates in North America, and Southern Command is responsible for South America.
European and Africa Commands cover those continents. Indo-Pacific Command is the largest of the military’s terrestrial combatant commands. Space Command covers everything else, from an altitude of 100 kilometers extending out to infinity.
Gen. Chance Saltzman, the Space Force’s senior general who sits on the joint chiefs of staff, said the Defense Department is still figuring out its role as human activity expands in the Solar System.
“As US interests go farther and farther into space, there’s going to be a need to protect and defend those interests,” Saltzman said. “That’s where we get involved.
So, we’ve got to pay attention to exactly what is it that NASA is going to do? How far are they going? What is the PRC (China) doing in cislunar [space]? What are their interests there?”
NASA announced an overhaul of its Artemis lunar program last week. The agency is canceling development of a space station in orbit around the Moon to focus on a permanent base on the surface.
The Moon is big—it has slightly less surface area than the continent of Asia—but it’s not too fanciful to imagine a scenario where different nations or companies might have their eyes on the same piece of real estate.
Some places are more ripe for exploration than others. Near the Moon’s south pole, there are eternally dark craters that harbor water ice deposits, and peaks of eternal light that offer access to near-continuous sunlight.
The Moon has resources that could enable further exploration, and some minerals that might be economically useful if brought back to Earth.
“We want to make sure that we’re not surprised at cislunar space, and that some other actor doesn’t begin to use it for military advantage,” Saltzman said.

“We’re involved in the discussions because we have a role to play, but we’re not the lead. NASA’s got it,” Saltzman said. “We’re about to send astronauts back to the Moon.
That’s pretty exciting. So that is going to drive a lot of the system and discussions. I just don’t want to get caught flat-footed when we start to have to protect US interests out there, so we’re along for the ride.”

To be sure, there are no plans for anything like the Moon Marines sent to the lunar surface in the Apple TV series For All Mankind. The military’s initial assignment at the Moon will be much the same role it played in Earth orbit for most of the Space Age: observing and cataloging traffic.
The first military mission to fly to the Moon this century is undergoing development by the Air Force Research Laboratory. Named Oracle, the project will consist of at least two small satellites.
One of them will focus on demonstrating mobility and navigation in cislunar space, while the other will detect and track known and unknown objects around the Moon.
NASA and the Space Force anticipate more traffic in cislunar space as crew missions, robotic orbiters and landers, and international spacecraft travel to and from the Moon.
The number of missions planned to go to the Moon will fall far short of the some-45,000 objects the Space Force routinely tracks closer to Earth.
But observing objects in cislunar space from the Earth is not easy. First, the Moon is a quarter-million miles away, so spacecraft or debris will appear vanishingly faint to sensors near the Earth.
The Moon and the Sun far outshine these objects. Second, using a satellite stationed near the Moon to obtain a fix and vector for an object requires precise navigation, a capability not readily available without reliable GPS signals.
If anyone knows exactly where a satellite is around the Moon today, it is due to the generosity of its operator.
If they choose to, spacecraft owners can provide detailed ephemeris data, revealing their location and movement, but there’s no way to force any operator to publish this information.
Some operators may not want to share their location for competitive or strategic advantage.
There is also the risk of a satellite breakup in lunar orbit that could create a field of space debris. There is currently no way to track such small fragments at lunar distances, raising the risk of damaging or destructive collisions.
If a lunar satellite disintegrated, it could “compromise international science missions and destabilize emerging lunar economic activity,” according to a 2025 report from the Mitre Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that manages several federally funded research centers.
Some generals bring the subject of lunar military operations back to Earth. In 2024, Ars asked Space Force Maj. Gen. Anthony Mastalir, then a one-star general, about the military’s view of the Moon.
He identified a potential adversary’s use of the Moon or orbits around them as a launch point for an attack directed at US assets closer to the Earth.
“We’re not fighting over mineral deposits on an asteroid somewhere. We’re not, right now, shepherding convoys to Mars,” Mastalir said.
“These are terrestrial conflicts that we hope we can deter. We also don’t want them to, although it’s more and more likely that they may, extend into space or even start in space.
“Someday in the future, that may change, but for now, I’d be more concerned just about what these new orbits present, what that does for potential attack vectors to our traditional operating [areas].”

The IDF had previously warned that a missile attack was expected on Seder night, one of the most widely observed Jewish rituals.
According to initial IDF assessments, some 10 ballistic missiles were fired at central Israel, in the largest Iranian salvo on Israel since the early days of the war. Minutes later, sirens again sounded in central and northern Israel, as the IDF detected another Iranian ballistic missile launch, the sixth such salvo of the day.
Around the same time, sirens sounded in the Golan Heights and Galilee due to rocket fire by Hezbollah from Lebanon.
According to the military, most of the incoming missiles were intercepted. Some missiles were allowed to hit open areas, “according to protocol.”

One Iranian missile, apparently carrying a cluster bomb warhead, spread bomblets in central Israel. Rescue forces said damage was caused to homes and cars in the central cities of Rosh Haayin and Petah Tikva. Another bomblet struck a playground in Petah Tikva, causing damage, footage showed. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Mass robotaxi malfunction sparks chaos in Chinese megacity as 100 driverless cabs abruptly stop on motorways causing pile-ups
A mass robotaxi malfunction left passengers stranded in the middle of fast-moving traffic in a major Chinese city, causing major pile-ups.
The 'system failure' on Tuesday affected around 100 driverless vehicles, which are operated by Baidu's Apollo Go, in Wuhan, according to a preliminary report.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
A video verified by Reuters and posted on TikTok's Chinese version, Douyin, showed vehicles stalled on busy roads and obstructing traffic.
Local media reported that some passengers were trapped inside the vehicles for nearly two hours.
Speaking to Shanghai-based newspaper The Paper, a police officer said that while car doors could be opened, passengers were hesitant to get out because of heavy traffic and called the cops for assistance.
Baidu did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
One passenger told Chinese media that their robotaxi stopped after turning a corner. An instruction on a screen read: 'Driving system malfunction. Staff are expected to arrive in 5 minutes.'
After no one showed up, the passenger pushed an SOS button and was told that staff were on their way. The car door could be opened, so the passenger got out on their own.
The accident sparked renewed discussions on Chinese social media about robotaxi safety and readiness.
An Apollo Go robotaxi carrying a passenger fell into a construction pit in Chongqing in August, and in May, one of the cars operated by Pony.ai caught fire on a road in Beijing.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
A widespread power outage in San Francisco at the end of last year also caused Waymo robotaxis to stall and snarl traffic.
Baidu is one of China's largest operators of autonomous driving fleets, alongside Pony.ai and WeRide.
The companies have rolled out commercial robotaxi services across major Chinese cities and have expanded operations into overseas markets, including the Middle East.

The White House later announced that Trump would “address the nation” on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. Eastern time to provide an update on the war.
Trump also declared that Iran’s surviving stockpiles of enriched uranium did not concern him at all since they are buried underground and inaccessible, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu boasted that Israel, during the current conflict, has “smashed” Tehran’s ability to produce nuclear weapons.
The remarks from both Trump and Netanyahu appeared to potentially set the stage for the conclusion of the war, even as the US has been amassing troops for a potential ground operation in Iran.
“No, [the Iranians] don’t have to make a deal,” Trump said in response to reporters’ questions at the White House, which later announced the president will “address the nation” about the war on Wednesday at 9 p.m. eastern time.
“When we feel that they are… put into the stone ages and won’t be able to come up with a nuclear weapon, then we’ll leave, whether we have a deal or not,” he said. “It’s irrelevant now.”
Trump has claimed that the US already obliterated Iran’s nuclear program in strikes last year and said earlier Tuesday that he was not focused on Iranian uranium stockpiles, so it’s not clear what else Trump is looking to accomplish militarily. It also remains unclear if Iran will follow suit if the US unilaterally ceases fire.
“It’s possible that we’ll have a deal because they want to make a deal more than I want to make a deal,” Trump added.
“But in a fairly short period of time, we’ll be finished, and they will not be able to do a nuclear weapon for years,” he continued.

Israeli DM Says All of South Lebanon Will Be Occupied, Villages Leveled ‘In Accordance With Gaza’
UN Aid Chief warns world isn’t ready for such a large expansion of the occupied territories
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has declared that Israel would formally occupy the whole of Lebanese territory south of the Litani River, and will commit to a policy of totally leveling the villages along the border of the occupied territory and northern Israel.
Katz had talked up an occupation in everything but name last week, talking of creating a “buffer zone” out of that territory, and saying no Lebanese civilians would be allowed to return to that part of Lebanon.
The pretense of a “buffer zone” seems to be fading fast among Israeli officials, with Katz now talking of Israel simply gaining occupational control over the region, and destroying the southernmost villages “in accordance with the Rafah and Beit Hanoun model in Gaza.”
Katz reiterated that the return of any Lebanese displaced into the occupied south will be “completely prohibited” and claimed this would effect some 600,000 Lebanese civilians. Israel has already destroyed all the bridges spanning the Litani River, so anyone who fled north earlier is effectively locked out of returning at any rate.
Human Rights Watch noted that the policy amounted to both forced displacement and wanton destruction, which are considered war crimes under international law. The Israeli offensive continues, however, with the IDF reporting four of their troops were killed and two wounded in fighting.
That Israel’s actions in Lebanon amount to war crimes appears to matter less and less, as Israel has openly deliberately attacked and killed journalists and health care workers repeatedly in the course of the war, rounding out the first month of the conflict by attacking and killed two UN peacekeepers.

Scientific Research Group With The Goal Of Finding Alien Civilizations May Have Found An Important Pulsar Near Our Galaxy’s Black Hole Instead, And It Could Be Used For Testing Einstein’s Relativity

When it comes to studying outer space, there is plenty to learn. Of course, for most people, looking for aliens is about the coolest thing that can be done.
The Breakthrough Listen Galactic Center Survey is part of a scientific research program that looks at radio waves from space with the hope of finding evidence of alien civilizations.
While they haven’t heard anything from aliens quite yet, they did notice what they believe to be signals from a pulsar that they think is located at the center of our galaxy, near the massive black hole.
They wrote up their findings in a study, which is published in the Astrophysical Journal. Their hope is that other astronomers can confirm their findings, and then that the pulsar can be used for future tests.
The pulsar that they found is known as a millisecond pulsar because it spins hundreds of times per second. The signal has been measured to repeat every 8.19 milliseconds.
Perhaps more importantly is the fact that it appears to be located near Sagittarius A, the supermassive blackhole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy.
Sagittarius A is huge. About 4.3 million times as massive as our sun. That amount of mass has a lot of gravity, and it would therefore influence the signals from the pulsar in some important ways.
In a statement on the find, co-author Slavko Bogdanov from the Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory, said:
“Any external influence on a pulsar, such as the gravitational pull of a massive object, would introduce anomalies in this steady arrival of pulses, which can be measured and modeled.
In addition, when the pulses travel near a very massive object, they may be deflected and experience time delays due to the warping of space-time, as predicted by Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity.”
If their findings are accurate, the tests that could be run on it could help to improve the understanding of General Relativity as a whole.
Needless to say, the authors and many other astronomers and physicists are excited about the potential.

The Department of Homeland Security's top spokeswoman on Wednesday announced her departure from the role after roughly six weeks in the post.
"I joined [DHS] with a genuine passion for supporting [Donald Trump] in his decisive and effective policies to secure our homeland, be a voice for the precious Angel Families, and an advocate for the men and women of [ICE]," Katie Zacharia posted on X.
"I look forward to continuing that work in other capacities. God bless America, God Bless President Trump, and I am grateful to be alive during the presidencies of [Donald Trump]," she added.
Zacharia had replaced Tricia McLaughlin, who left the post after a year. Though she did not give a reason for her departure, the Daily Beast reported that Zacharia's ties to Corey Lewandowski, the alleged lover of ex-DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, were the catalyst.
Speaking to Just the News in a phone interview, Zacharia denied the Daily Beast report and stated that she first met Lewandowski, Noem, and McLaughlin in a February 2026 meeting to discuss a public-facing media role in the administration.
The Daily Mail, citing a source, reported that much of Zacharia's initial work, however, involved "menial tasks such as fielding email inquiries."
Zacharia said that her decision to leave the role was largely motivated by the strain that regular travel to-and-from California placed on her family. She further added that, prior to her departure, she had the opportunity to congratulate DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin on his confirmation and that she maintains strong support for his work and that of Border Czar Tom Homan.
