The chance of the Vatican being hit by a meteorite today — February 24, 2026 — is effectively zero.
No imminent threats: NASA and other space agencies monitor near-Earth objects (NEOs), and there are no known asteroids or meteoroids on a collision course with Earth today, let alone targeting Vatican City.
Meteor showers ≠ impacts: While meteor showers occur regularly (e.g., Lyrids in April 2026), they consist of tiny particles burning up in the atmosphere — not dangerous impacts.
Size and odds: Most meteorites that reach Earth are small and land randomly. The odds of one striking a specific 0.49 km² area like the Vatican are astronomically low — far less than 1 in millions on any given day.
Vatican’s role: Ironically, the Vatican Observatory studies meteorites and planetary defense, emphasizing science over fear. It even holds a Martian meteorite in its collection.
In short, there is no risk of the Vatican being hit by a meteorite today.
