The Grebulons are a tragicomic alien race whose collective amnesia and obsession with Earth's trivialities provide the "bleak" ending to Arthur Dent's sandwich-making days on Lamuella.
1. The Amnesiac Reconnaissance
The Grebulons are a missing reconnaissance fleet that has been dormant for millennia. Their ship was struck by a meteorite that was "neatly" aimed—it destroyed the specific part of the computer meant to detect meteorites, as well as the Central Mission Module containing their memories, identities, and orders.

The Result: They landed on the tenth planet of our solar system, Rupert, with absolutely no idea who they were or what they were supposed to be doing.
Their New Mission: Since their only remaining instruction was to "monitor something interesting," they settled into an eternal loop of watching Earth television and radio broadcasts.

2. Infatuation with Earthly "Culture"
Living in a base on the frozen planet Rupert, the Grebulons became obsessed with Earth's consumer habits and shallow interests:
Lifestyle: They furnished their ship with waterbeds, hi-fi systems, and bean bags, and developed a taste for McDonald's hamburgers and chicken nuggets.
American Express: They actually had a P.O. Box in New Hampshire to collect Earth goods, which they paid for using an American Express card.
Astrology: Their Leader became deeply enamored with astrology, eventually hiring an alternate-reality Tricia McMillan to map out horoscopes for Rupert.

3. The End of the Sandwich Era
The destruction of Earth (and Arthur's peace) was not the result of intergalactic malice, but a "misguided" interpretation of the stars:
The Horoscope Motive: The Grebulon Leader, a "classic Taurus," found his astrological chart ominous. Believing his fortunes would only improve if Earth—an annoying astrological body—was removed, he ordered its destruction.
Vogon Manipulation: It is revealed that the Hitchhiker’s Guide Mark II (secretly a Vogon tool) used "reverse temporal engineering" to ensure the Grebulons carried out the demolition.
The Aftermath: The Grebulons destroyed every version of Earth in all realities, finally fulfilling the Vogons' original bypass order. The Leader's only real regret was that there was "nothing on TV anymore".
