New Initiatives Aim to Create Welcome for Refugees in Minnesota

—At a time when our nation’s proud tradition of welcoming refugees is continually at risk of being tarnished, several innovative Minnesota-based organizations have received funding for nine local projects to serve the local refugee population. The initiatives include new networking and training opportunities for refugees, establishing community gardens, and forums for telling the stories of refugees through art.

“Now more than ever, supporting local organizations that have fresh ideas for sharing information about refugees with their neighbors is critical,” said Melanie Nezer, Vice President for Policy and Advocacy at HIAS. “The projects in Minnesota will help dispel the misinformation about refugees that is so prevalent these days and we hope that successful projects will be replicated in communities across the country.”

Years of corruption and neglect have severely damaged production, leaving infrastructure in need of massive long-term reinvestment.

Bloomberg writes that despite Venezuela holding the world’s largest proven crude reserves, experts estimate restoring its oil system would require approximately $10 billion in investment every year for the next decade.

Industry participants say interest in the country is real, but the recent removal of President Nicolás Maduro alone is not enough to unlock capital. Companies want clarity on whether a durable government will emerge, whether contracts and the rule of law will be respected, and whether US political support for their presence in Venezuela will extend beyond Trump’s term in office.

The White House has already engaged multiple energy companies in early-stage talks, according to a US official. Administration officials say the private sector is prepared to move when conditions stabilize.

“All of our oil companies are ready and willing to make big investments in Venezuela that will rebuild their oil infrastructure,” White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said.

Appeals Court Agrees To Fast-Track Challenge To $100,000 H-1B Visa Fee

A federal appeals court on Jan. 5 agreed to expedite a business group’s appeal of a court ruling that upheld the Trump administration’s decision to increase the fee for H-1B visas for employees in specialty occupations to $100,000.

Washington-based U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell issued a ruling on Dec. 23, 2025, declining to block the fee increase. Howell also granted summary judgment in favor of the Trump administration.

The H-1B program allows U.S. employers to temporarily hire foreign workers in occupations that require “the theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge and a bachelor’s degree or higher in a directly related specific specialty (or its equivalent) as a minimum for entry into the occupation in the United States,” according to a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) web page.

Specialty occupations covered under the program include engineering, mathematics, architecture, medicine and health, education, law, and accounting.

Before the policy change, the fee ranged from $2,000 to $5,000, depending on the employer’s size.

Plaintiffs filed an appeal of Howell’s decision with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on Dec. 29, 2025. They included the Chamber of Commerce—a business federation with about 300,000 direct members—and the Association of American Universities, which represents 69 U.S.-based research universities, both of which had sued to block the policy.

The plaintiffs said in a motion to expedite the case filed with the appeals court on Jan. 2 that a ‍speedy review was necessary to preserve employers’ rights ahead of the annual H-1B visa lottery scheduled to begin in March. The Trump administration did not oppose the quicker timeline.

On Jan. 5, the D.C. Circuit granted the plaintiffs’ motion to expedite the case.

Democrat Charlotte Sheriff Now Under Investigation for “Mafia-style” Intimidation and Corruption

District Attorney Spencer Merriweather has formally requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to probe allegations of attempted extortion and corruption against Democrat Sheriff Garry McFadden.

The investigation follows a removal petition filed Monday in Superior Court by Democratic State Rep. Carla Cunningham and four former Sheriff’s Office employees. The filing accuses the two-term Sheriff of “mafia-style” intimidation, bribery, and willful misconduct.

On Monday, District Attorney Merriweather confirmed he has asked the SBI’s Professional Standards Unit to investigate the claims before his office decides whether to proceed with the removal petition. The DA’s letter to the SBI specifically requests an investigation into:

Hatch Act violations (regarding improper political activity).

“No sheriff should ever suggest that a legislator’s safety depends on how she votes,” Cunningham said in a statement. “I was afraid and the intimidation affected me.”

Beyond the legislative threats, the petition, joined by former Chief Deputy Kevin Canty and other ex-staffers, paints a picture of a chaotic and hostile administration. Additional accusations include:

Misuse of Public Funds: Allegations that McFadden used office credit cards for travel upgrades and directed deputies to ferry guests to bars and strip clubs using official vehicles.

Retaliation & Favoritism: Former employees claim McFadden fostered a “Team Sheriff” culture, launching internal affairs investigations against “perceived enemies” while protecting loyalists. One allegation suggests a detention officer was promoted because she acted as a “de facto informant” for the Sheriff.

Jail Safety: The petition cites dangerous understaffing at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center, alleging staff levels dropped from 1,300 to roughly 770 under McFadden’s tenure. Former Sgt. Marcia Crenshaw Hill alleges relaxed policies for inmates contributed to an environment where she was stabbed in the neck by an inmate in 2020.

The US has backed a $7.4bn investment in a critical minerals processing plant to be built by Korea Zinc as Washington tries to counter China’s dominance over the supply chain for strategic metals.

Korea Zinc, the world’s biggest zinc smelter, said the US government had asked the company to build the facility to address growing supply-chain risks for materials essential to industries from cars to defence.

The plant will produce antimony, germanium and gallium — elements used in semiconductors and electronics — as well as non-ferrous metals such as zinc, lead and copper and precious metals includinggold and silver.
