Western ‘peacekeepers’ in Ukraine not on agenda – German election winner

The deployment ofEuropean “peacekeepers” to Ukraine is not currently an option, Friedrich Merz, head of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the country’s presumptive next chancellor, has said.

Speaking on Friday during the ‘Berlin Round’ session hosted by ZDF and ARD, Merz addressed reports that the UK and France are planning to deploy up to 30,000 peacekeepers to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev.

He agreed with outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz that any such deployment is unlikely in the current circumstances.

“I see it the same way as the chancellor: This question does not arise at all today,” Merz stated. “The first question we must ask ourselves is: Do we continue to support Ukraine so that it can defend itself? In my view, we have not done enough so far; otherwise, this war would not have lasted almost three years by now.”

According to Scholz, discussions about a foreign contingent in Ukraine look like “the fourth step before the first,” insisting that the immediate priority must be “fair peace negotiations.”

Friedrich Merz’s CDU emerged victorious in the recent German federal election, while Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) experienced significant losses. Merz is expected to take office after a coalition government is formed, although the timing is unclear.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the British-French plan would see Western “peacekeepers”in Ukraine protect vital infrastructure, cities and ports, rather than be deployed directly on the front line.

The plan also hinges onwhether London and Pariswould be able to persuade US President Donald Trump to commit to a limited American military role, providing critical support in areas such as air defense, logistics, and intelligence, the WSJ said.

Russia has voiced strong opposition to the potential deployment of Western peacekeeping forces, warning that any unauthorized foreign military personnel in Ukraine would be regarded as legitimate targets.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said Moscow considers NATO expansion towards Russian borders as a “threat,” meaning that the deployment of the bloc’s troops in Ukraine, although under a different banner, would change nothing in this regard.

Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said last year thatthe West might attempt to “essentially occupy Ukraine” under the guise of deploying peacekeepers.

On The War's Third Anniversary, The US Voted Against A UN Resolution Blaming Russia For Starting It

A kind request to Bloomberg and other global assemblers of the weekly data calendars around which so many in markets still pivot: can we please get a geopolitical addition rather than just the numbers and the option of the warbling of endless central bankers? Right now, what political leaders say, especially when they meet, matters far more for markets than a run of the mill number or “jazz hands, yada yada yada” from an expert on monetary policy.

Yesterday, on its third anniversary, the US voted against a resolution at the UN blaming Russia for starting the Ukraine War. Obviously, that’s a slap in the face for Ukraine and Europe, who in the latest White House foreign policy pivot have been left clinging to the fuselage of a departing Airforce One like Afghanis on the runway at Bagram Airbase.

Turkey backed Ukraine’s NATO membership. That’s a very powerful lever behind that cause, but Europe keeps failing to find the second-largest military power in NATO on a map or in any of its discussions.

Moreover, the US is reportedly close to an economic deal with Ukraine which will guarantee it as “free, sovereign, and secure.” This can be seen as predatory from the US side. It’s also the inverse of the ‘invade, then throw hundreds of billions at a country while failing to generate any profit from its resources, then get kicked out’ strategy employed in Afghanistan. It at least appears to cement US economic interests in keeping Ukraine viable despite apparent Russian appetites.

Next German Chancellor Merz, who stated, "Europe may need its own military alliance instead of NATO,” is discussing using the outgoing Bundestag to change the constitution to lift the country’s debt brake, unleashing €200bn in extra defence spending - which would cover a year of two of what would be needed. All Germany, and Europe, would then need to do would be to find the resources to match, including up to 300,000 young men and women prepared to serve at a time when there are fewer and fewer of them, and opinion polls show even fewer patriotic ones.

The US is reportedly considering merging its Pentagon Africa Command into Europe, effectively showing it no longer has the same global focus. For those who haven’t noticed, Africa is right next to Europe, not the Americas. That said, some areas far from it remain key.

An official trip will be possible once the Ukraine conflict is “settled,” according to the US president

US President Donald Trump has expressed openness to visiting Russia, contingent on progress in peace negotiations to end the Ukraine conflict. Trump made the statement during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Washington on Monday.

When asked by a reporter about his plans to visit Moscow, Trump responded: “If all this gets settled down, which I think it will, sure, I would go there, and he’d come here too,” seemingly referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin potentially visiting the US.

Ancient beach on Mars discovered by China's Zhurong Mars rover: 'This strengthens the case for past habitability'

Today, Mars is a chilly desert of rock and dust — but 4 billion years ago, the planet had rivers, lakes and even oceans with sandy beaches.

Data from China's Zhurong rover recently revealed the first evidence of one of those long-lost Mars beaches, finding shallow sandy slopes perfectly preserved about 33 feet (10 meters) beneath the Martian surface.

Ground-penetrating radar aboard the rover measured thick layers of sand, sloping gently upward toward the rocky shore, as if washed up by ocean waves.

"The structures don't look like sand dunes. They don't look like an impact crater. They don't look like lava flows.

That's when we started thinking about oceans," Michael Manga, a University of California, Berkeley, professor of earth and planetary science and co-author of the study, said in a statement.

"The orientation of these features are parallel to what the old shoreline would have been.

They have both the right orientation and the right slope to support the idea that there was an ocean for a long period of time to accumulate the sand-like beach."

Zhurong spent a year, from May 2021 to May 2022, trundling along the base of a steeply-sloped rock outcrop at the edge of a wide, flat plain.

From the rover's point of view on the ground, it's hard to tell, but this ancient shoreline on Mars seemed to lie inside a 2,050-mile-wide (3,300-kilometer-wide) impact crater called Utopia Basin.

Utopia Basin is, in fact, the largest known crater in the entire solar system. Scientists had speculated Utopia Basin might once have held an ancient ocean, and they thought the escarpment overlooking Zhurong's route might once have been its shoreline.

And indeed, based on data from Zhurong, which researchers on Earth are still poring over, that speculation was right.

Along Zhurong's 1.2-mile (1.9-kilometer) route, its ground-penetrating radar beamed radio waves 262 feet (80 meters) down into the Martian ground.

The way those radio waves reflected back to the instrument revealed underground features they came into contact with, like the boundaries between layers of rock and sediment.

Thirty-three feet (10 meters) beneath the surface, the radar revealed smooth, gently-sloping layers of sand, several yards thick.

Those layers appear to run parallel to the rocky cliff, and they rise toward that cliff at a shallow 15-degree slope — which is typical of beaches here on planet Earth.

The buried beach could represent the first evidence of a true ocean from Mars' ancient past, and its presence means the Red Planet must have had an ocean for millions of years — long enough to leave behind the thick layers of sand Zhurong's radar measured.

And that ocean must have been fed by rivers, the scientists reason, as those rivers would have dumped sediment into the ocean. Waves would eventually have spread that resulting sediment along the shore, forming a beach that'd have been strikingly familiar to us.

"Shorelines are great locations to look for evidence of past life," Benjamin Cardenas, a geoscientist at Pennsylvania State University and co-author of the study, said in a statement.

"It's thought that the earliest life on Earth began at locations like this, near the interface of air and shallow water."

(It's not known exactly where or how life on Earth began, but shorelines like this one are a possibility, along with hydrothermal vents on the deep ocean floor.)

The discovery was a stroke of geological luck; Zhurong's beach would probably have eroded away into something unrecognizable over the last 3.5 billion years if it hadn't been buried beneath those 33 feet of rocky, dusty debris from asteroid impacts, volcanoes and dust storms.

"This strengthens the case for past habitability in this region on Mars," Hai Liu, a professor with the School of Civil Engineering and Transportation at Guangzhou University, a co-author of the study and a core member of the science team for the Tianwen-1 mission, which included China's first Mars rover, Zhurong, said in the statement.

Slovakia ought to seek aid repayment if Western nations do the same, a senior member of parliament has said

Slovakia has a right to seek repayment for the aid it has provided to Ukraine if Western nations like the US, Germany, and France take similar steps, a top Slovak MP has stated.

Andrej Danko, chairman of the Slovak National Party and a key figure in the ruling coalition, opined in a Facebook video on Monday that Bratislava has the right to demand repayment of its €3.5 billion ($3.8 billion) contribution.

Reflecting on reports that Washington is negotiating a deal in which Ukraine could hand over 50% of its critical minerals as compensation for US aid, Danko questioned what the EU would receive in return for its assistance.

I'm concerned that many people do not understand the historical and institutional context in which the DOGE labor reforms are unfolding. They look at this as if these are some random, chaotic, arbitrary, strange, and even cruel measures to impose on a devoted civil service.

The reality is very different, and I'm not even sure that Elon entirely understands this. For more than a century, even dating back to 1883, the civil service has grown and grown without check from the elected branch, either the presidency or the legislature . The bureaucracies have ballooned from a few to 450 or so. The bloat and absurdities have grown too.

Get this: no one has ever known what to do about it. Not Coolidge, not Hoover, not Nixon, not Reagan, not Clinton, no one. No president has been able to crack this nut. The only reforms ever to have made it through are those that make the administrative state bigger, never smaller.

Countless cabinet secretaries have come and gone, always with the intention of making a change but leaving saddened, demoralized, outwitted, outgunned, and ultimately devoured.

No president has seriously taken on this problem because they simply did not know how. The unions are powerful, the intimidation from the deep institutional knowledge is overwhelming, the fear of the media as been powerful, and every single president comes to power vaguely feeling threatened by the intelligence agencies. The industries that have captured every single agency were also far too powerful to unseat or control.

This combination of institutional inertia has blocked serious reform for a full century. No one has dared. No one has even had a theory or strategy about what to do about this problem. It had become so terrible that most people in politics have simply surrendered, like homeowners who know there are rats in the basement and bats in the attic but long ago gave up trying to fix the issue.

All this time, the American people have felt themselves ever more oppressed, weighed upon, taxed and regulated, spied upon, brow beaten, and otherwise overwhelmed. Voting never made any difference because the politicians no longer controlled the system. The bureaucracies ruled all.

The Biden years underscored the point. We didn't even need a conscious and present executive. We only needed a figurehead to pretend to be president, just like the Soviet premiers in the old days. The institutions ran everything and the people controlled nothing.

How to deal with this? Trump alone figured it out in his last term: he simply took charge of the agencies in a limited way. There were screams of horror and plots galore. They performed a long stream of clever schemes to destroy him and show him who is boss, which is not the democratically elected president but the forces behind the scenes.

The job of the president, goes the message from all the insiders, is to PRETEND to be in charge but not actually do anything meaningful. Shut up, mug up, obey, and disturb nothing, let the administrative state do its thing without oversight or disruption, and then you will get your honorary library and bestselling autobiography and go down in history as great.

Trump refused the deal and look what happened.

Four years have gone by and Trump is back again, this time with a determination to slay this beast, one that he knows all-to-well. The efforts of DOGE and MAHA and MAGA are epic in scope, breaking a century of pathetic acquiescence toward the deep, middle, and shallow states, at last using moral courage to confront the problem head on, come what may.

They are profoundly aware that they MUST act fast and with some degree of ferocity, even recklessness, else we will default back to the status quo of leaders who pretend to be in charge while the embedded system runs things behind the scenes.

It has been this way for TOO LONG. The voters this time have demanded change, and mustered the faith to believe that change is possible. This is precisely what DOGE is attempting, to make good on a promise, a promise that for once the voters actually believed was credible.

They simply must succeed. There might never be another chance. The way of failure is the path everyone knows the US was on, toward economic stagnation, political scolerosis, and eventual irrelevance in the unfolding of the next stage of social evolution.

SpaceX's Starship megarocket will fly again this week, if all goes according to plan.

The company is planning to launch Starship, the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built, for the eighth time on Friday (Feb. 28), Elon Musk said via X yesterday (Feb. 23).

The 403.5-foot-tall (123 meters) fully reusable vehicle will lift off from Starbase, SpaceX's launch and manufacturing facility in South Texas.

The company has not yet announced a target launch time, but you'll almost certainly be able to watch it live whenever it happens; SpaceX has livestreamed all seven of Starship's flights to date.

The most recent flight took place on Jan. 16.

That mission was a partial success; SpaceX successfully caught Starship's giant first-stage booster, known as Super Heavy, with the "chopstick" arms of the Starbase launch tower as planned.

Ship, the rocket's 171-foot-tall (52 m) upper stage, was supposed to deploy a payload for the first time on Flight 7 — 10 mockups of SpaceX's Starlink internet satellites — circle much of the globe and then splash down in the Indian Ocean about an hour after launch.

That didn't happen, however; the upper stage broke apart over the Atlantic Ocean about 8.5 minutes into flight, apparently due to a propellant leak.

SpaceX has not yet laid out the mission goals for Flight 8, but they're likely to be similar to those for Flight 7.

Over then long haul, SpaceX aims to catch Ship with the chopsticks as well; this recovery strategy will make inspection and reflight of the entire vehicle quite efficient, according to the company.

Musk has said that SpaceX wants to catch Ship for the first time in early 2025, but it's hard to imagine that happening on Flight 8, after the stage suffered a problem on Flight 7.

Iran Says Israel’s Nuclear Weapons Are a ‘Grave Threat’ to the World

Iran's foreign minister made the comments at the UN's Conference on Disarmament in Geneva

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the UN’s Conference on Disarmament in Geneva that Israel’s nuclear weapons pose a “grave threat” to the world.

Israel is estimated to have somewhere between 90 and 300 nuclear weapons, and its nuclear arsenal gets very little attention since both the US and Israel do not acknowledge its existence. Israel is not a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), meaning its nuclear weapons program is not subject to inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Araghchi called for the world to put pressure on Israel over its secret nuclear weapons program. “The international community must hold this regime accountable, and demand that it renounce the possession of nuclear weapons, accede to the NPT as a non-nuclear-weapon party, and subject all its nuclear facilities and activities to the comprehensive IAEA Safeguards,” he said.

Aragchi also condemned threats from Israeli officials related to Israel’s nuclear weapons. In November 2023, former Israeli Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, who recently resigned over the Gaza ceasefire deal, said dropping a nuke on Gaza was an option for Israel. “We categorically condemn this illegitimate, illegal, and irresponsible action and position,” Aragchi said.

Last year, Avigdor Liberman, a member of the Israeli Knesset and leader of the Avigdor Liberman, said Israel may have to stop Iran’s nuclear program with “non-conventional” means, a veiled reference to Israel’s nuclear weapons.

“It is not possible anymore to stop the Iranian nuclear program with conventional means,” Liberman said. “And we will have to use all the means that are available to us. We will have to stop with the deliberate policy of ambiguity, and it needs to be clear what is at stake here.”

While Israeli and US officials are constantly hyping up the threat of Iran developing nuclear weapons, there’s no evidence Tehran has decided to build a nuclear bomb, a fact recently acknowledged by the CIA. Unlike Israel, Iran is a signatory to the NPT and is subject to IAEA inspections.

SpaceX completes investigation into Starship Flight 7 mishap

Propellant leaks created by an unexpectedly strong harmonic response caused the loss of SpaceX’s Starship vehicle on a test flight last month as the company prepares for its next launch.

In a statement released Feb. 24, SpaceX provided new details about the seventh Starship/Super Heavy test flight Jan. 16, which ended with the Starship upper stage breaking apart over the Caribbean.

According to SpaceX, there was a flash in the aft section, or “attic,” of Starship near one of its six Raptor engines about two minutes after the vehicle separated from the Super Heavy booster.

That was followed by a pressure rise in the section that suggested there was a propellant leak.

A second flash followed about two minutes later, after which there were “sustained fires” in the attic.

“These eventually caused all but one of Starship’s engines to execute controlled shut down sequences and ultimately led to a loss of communication with the ship,” the company stated, with the last telemetry received about 8 minutes and 20 seconds after liftoff.

SpaceX noted that telemetry was lost before the autonomous flight termination system on the vehicle was triggered. That system instead activated about three minutes after the loss of communications with the vehicle.

The company concluded that the most probable cause for the loss of Starship was a “harmonic response several times stronger in flight than had been seen during testing, which led to increased stress on hardware in the propulsion system.”

That increased stress caused propellant leaks that could not be fully vented from the attic and allowed the fires that led to the engine shutdowns.

As part of the investigation, SpaceX performed an extended static fire of the Starship built for the next mission, Flight 8, firing its engines for 60 seconds in the Feb. 12 test.

“The 60-second firing was used to test multiple engine thrust levels and three separate hardware configurations in the Raptor vacuum engine feedlines to recreate and address the harmonic response seen during Flight 7,” the company stated.

“Findings from the static fire informed hardware changes to the fuel feedlines to vacuum engines, adjustments to propellant temperatures, and a new operating thrust target that will be used on the upcoming flight test.”

SpaceX said it is also adding vents and a gaseous nitrogen purge system to reduce the flammability of the attic section of the current version of Starship. SpaceX is moving ahead with the next Starship mission, Flight 8.

That is scheduled to launch as soon as Feb. 28 from the company’s Starbase site at Boca Chica, Texas, pending the Federal Aviation Administration’s approval of SpaceX’s investigation into Flight 7.

SpaceX said that Flight 8 will have many of the same objectives of Flight 7 that were not demonstrated, including deploying four mass simulators of next-generation Starlink satellites as a test of the vehicle’s payload deployment system.

Starship will also test new technologies to protect it during reentry, such as metallic tiles with active cooling.

As with the previous flight, SpaceX will attempt a “catch” of the Super Heavy booster back at the Starbase launch tower.

The booster includes changes such as upgraded avionics and power distribution systems, as well as an upgrade to igniters for the Raptor engines to address an issue on Flight 7 where one of 13 engines shut down at ignition during its boostback burn to return to the launch site.

“Starship’s seventh flight test was a reminder that developmental progress is not always linear, and putting flight hardware in a flight environment is the fastest way to demonstrate how thousands of distinct parts come together to reach space,” SpaceX stated in its summary of Flight 7.

“Upcoming flights will continue to target ambitious goals in the pursuit of full and rapid reusability.”
