Warning after one of UK's most commonly prescribed drugs is linked to debilitating bone disease

Thousands of Brits who take drugs for a common hormone condition could be at risk of bone loss, concerning research suggested today.

Roughly one in five Britons are affected by an underactive thyroid, caused by problems with the butterfly-shaped gland in the neck which governs functions from digestion to heart rate and mood.

Yet levothyroxine, pills that cost just a few pence a day to combat the condition, could raise the risk of the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis.

Research has long suggested too much thyroid hormone speeds up bone loss heightening the risk of the disease.

But now, the US scientists who assessed the drug on dozens of patients, found this risk was still raised among those with 'normal' levels of the thyroid-stimulating hormone.

Professor Shadpour Demehri, an expert in radiology at John Hopkins University in Maryland and study co-author said: 'Our study suggests that even when following current guidelines, levothyroxine use appears to be associated with greater bone loss in older adults.'

Dr Elena Ghotbi, study lead author and postdoctoral research fellow at John Hopkins University added: 'Data indicates that a significant proportion of thyroid hormone prescriptions may be given to older adults without hypothyroidism.

'This raises concerns about subsequent excess of thyroid hormone even when treatment is targeted to reference range goals.'

Key European NATO Bases in Reach of Russia's Oreshnik Hypersonic Missile - SputnikGlobe

In his remarks unveiling the Oreshnik missile system on Thursday, President Vladimir Putin warned that Moscow reserves the right “to use our weapons against military facilities of those countries that allow using their weapons against our facilities.”

Russia's new Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile has a 2.5-3 km/s flight speed, a 1-1.2 ton payload, is equipped with multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles, and is designated as an intermediate-range missile, which means a firing range of up to 5,500 km. During its test combat deployment against a Ukrainian military-industrial target Thursday, the Oreshnik was thought to have traveled 1,000 km or more to Dnepropetrovsk from Russia's Astrakhan region.

I’ve just voted against H.R. 9495.

I strongly support thelegislation’s provision that would postpone tax deadlines for Americans who are wrongfully detained abroad, and efforts to go after organizations providing material support for terrorism.

But as Donald Trump continues to make it clear that he intends to weaponize every lever of the federal government to go after his detractors, I have grown more concerned that the discretion it gives an administration to punish its critics could be abused and further empower the incoming administration’s worst impulses.

For that reason,I voted no.

NC Republicans Move To Limit Democrat Governor’s Power Over Elections After Likely Losing Supermajority

Republican state legislators in North Carolina are moving quickly to pass measures to restrict Democrat power over elections after likely losing its veto-proof majority in the state House.

While Republicans will maintain control of both the House and Senate in North Carolina,if election results remain where they are, the party is one seat shy of its veto-proof majority in the House. Additionally, Gov.-elect Josh Stein looks poised to be able to exercise more authority than his Democrat predecessor, Gov. Roy Cooper.

Both chambers passed a bill that would weaken the governor’s ability to oversee elections, in particulartransferring the power of the governor to appoint members of the currently Democrat-run North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) to the state auditor, Republican Dave Boliek.

“The agility of the General Assembly was demonstrated this week as they passed important legislation,placing the state auditor in an oversight role over the state board of elections,” Jim Womack, president of the North Carolina Election Integrity Team (NCEIT), told The Federalist. “This puts the auditor in a good position to conduct an audit of our elections for the first time in history. That should encourage voters. “

Under the bill, the NCSBE would remain an independent agency, but budgeting and appointments would rest under the authority of the state auditor’s office. According to NC Newsline, NCSBE spokesman Patrick Gannon explained the partisan divide on the board would change hands to Republican control, saying, “It would result in a 3-2 Republican split.” The auditor’s office would also be able to appoint the chairs of the 100 county boards of elections as well.

The measure would also make significant changes to absentee voting by enacting more robust security measures for mail-in ballots. Right now, voters who fail to affix a signature to an absentee ballot or who do not have the address of a witness can provide that information up to one week after Election Day. Voters who do not show up with identification also have a long time to prove identity. The new security measures would allow for two and a half days to fix the issues.

Those measures come after the state’s Supreme Court race, which saw the Republican challenger up by 10,000 votes on Election Day but flip in the incumbent Democrat’s favor by just a couple hundred votes well after Election Day. Those votes came from absentee and provisional ballots, and are being officially protested by groups and candidates.

The new law would also limit the amount of time boards of elections can count absentee and provisional ballots. Absentee votes would need to be counted on election night and provisional could be counted up to three days later.

The bill will now head to Cooper’s desk, where he is expected to veto. But a veto override vote would likely happen early December, as one of the outgoing acts of the supermajority.

Human Smuggler Testifies He Brought 500 Indian Migrants Across U.S.-Canada Border in Four Years

An Indian migrant testified that he smuggled more than 500 other India nationals across the U.S.-Canada border during a four-year period. Despite making more than $400,000 in his role in the smuggling operation, the man will be allowed to remain and work in the U.S. in exchange for his testimony.

Rajinder Singh, 51, testified that he participated in a human smuggling scheme that brought more than 500 Indian migrants across the U.S. northern border, the Associated Press reported. Singh said the migrants paid up to $100,000 each for movement along the smuggling trail leading from the Gujarat state in India to the Canadian border with the U.S.

Singh was previously convicted for his role in the human smuggling network and took the stand last week in Minnesota to testify against the alleged leaders of the network, Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel, 29, and Steve Shand, 50, of Florida, the AP stated. Prosecutors say Patel ran part of the smuggling operation and recruited Shand to drive groups of migrants across the Canadian border into Minnesota furin a four-week span.

Singh himself entered the United States illegally three times after being deported on federal charges, the AP stated. He says he is testifying because it is the right thing to do.

Patel’s attorney question questioned Singh’s virtue and said he is testifying in order to avoid yet another deportation. The AP says Signh’s deportation will be deferred and he will be provided with a work permit.

The India migrants would travel to Canada on student visas and would then be smuggled from British Columbia into Washington state. In 2021, the plans changed to cross the migrants into Minnesota instead.

This allegedly led to the deaths of four Indian migrants who froze to death in January 2022, the AP stated. The victims were listed as: 39-year-old Jagdish Patel; his wife, Vaishaliben, who was in her mid-30s; their 11-year-old daughter, Vihangi; and 3-year-old son, Dharmik.

Singh testified that he received a panic-stricken call from one of his smuggling associates who said, “Our work got screwed up. People got caught.” Singh said he later learned of the deaths of the Indian family.

“They are playing with people’s lives,” Singh said of the smugglers. “People died,” the AP stated.
