‘Nazi’-inspired US prison guards, American ‘revolution’ and Ukraine conflict: Highlights from Viktor Bout’s RT interview

The Russian businessman described “inhuman” conditions in US jails and ridiculed claims that he armed the Taliban

In his first big interview since release, Viktor Bout, a man the US claimed was a major arms dealer, spoke to RT on Saturday. Bout was returned to Russia on Thursday in a high-profile prisoner swap for basketball player Brittney Griner. During the conversation, the businessman revealed his ways to stay sane while behind bars, spoke about the conflict in Ukraine and on whether he believed the US might be on the verge of an uprising.

Arming the Taliban

Bout served 12 years in American prisons on arms-trafficking charges that he denies. Despite evading Taliban captivity in the mid-1990s, several American media outlets reported this week that he supplied up to 200 Soviet T-90 tanks to the Afghan Islamists. This claim apparently originated in an anonymously-sourced report by Germany’s Der Spiegel in 2002.

“No, I did not have any relations with the Taliban,” he told RT. “The Taliban put a bounty on my head. How can anyone say I worked with the Taliban?”

Regarding the supposed delivery of tanks to the militants, Bout asked how he could have possibly pulled off “200 flights to Afghanistan”and hammered the US media for not providing any evidence to back up this claim.

“Even Soviet propaganda understood that there are some limits,” he said. “You had to at least say some truths."

The plea deal

While Bout maintains his innocence, he said that he accepted a plea deal to serve 25 years because “what was one supposed to do?”However, he said that his attempts to switch lawyers before signing the deal were thwarted by his public defender, who misled him into sticking with her and admitting guilt.

“How can you trust this system when it works against you?” he argued.

Prison conditions

Bout said that guards would withhold food from troublesome inmates and leave harsh cell lighting on overnight, all in what he called a Nazi-inspired bid to “break a person’s will.” He described the quality of food served to prisoners as “inhuman” and said that he “lost a lot of weight” while incarcerated in the US.

However, the “biggest challenge” he faced behind bars was being granted only a single phone call to his family every month.

The prison population

Bout spent much of his time at United States Penitentiary, Marion in Illinois in solitary confinement, before he was housed with the general population of the facility from 2016 onwards.

The majority of inmates were African-American and Hispanic, Bout told RT. He added that “mostly my fellow inmates were sympathetic towards Russia. Or at least if they knew nothing about it, they would ask me questions.”

Bout passed the time by reading and learning several foreign languages, but recalled that drug use was rife among his fellow prisoners. “If it happens in a prison, just imagine what is happening out there on the street,” he said.

On Ukraine

Bout told RT that he sees the sanctions placed against him by the US as an “experiment,” and a warning to his fellow Russians. As such he was not surprised when the West responded to Russia’s military operation in Ukraine with economic penalties.

“I fully support the special military operation,”he stated, arguing that Russia should have sent its troops into Donbass in 2014.

“If I could, I would share the skills I have and I would readily volunteer,” he declared.

Meeting Griner

When Bout learned of Griner’s arrest on television, he recalled that an inmate approached him and told him “this is your ticket back home.” While the businessman said that he didn’t get his hopes up, the two would meet on the tarmac in Abu Dhabi on Thursday during the exchange.

An American revolution?

Asked whether he’d prefer to see Joe Biden or Donald Trump in the White House, Bout compared the two to “Coke Zero and Diet Pepsi,” adding that Russians “pay too much attention to US politics.”

“I don’t believe they’ll have a revolution in the United States,” he said, referring to political division in the country.Bout elaborated, arguing that excessive drug use is making young Americans too passive “to do anything,”while Washington ruthlessly punishes dissent, as it did when it jailed the Trump supporters who protested against Biden’s electoral victory on Capitol Hill last January.

I’ve already written about the narcissism/radicalization cycle that took hold of Elon Musk at some point for whatever reasons

and 'has been accelerating at a rapid pace since he finalized his acquisition of Twitter six weeks ago.

It keeps accelerating, and in two distinct but interrelated ways I would like to note.

The first is that Musk is now in near constant dialogue with the most rabid conspiracy theorists and anti-Semites in the digital space.

He’s jumped head first into the “globalist”/pedophile vortex which was at the heart of the “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory and later the entire Qanon movement.

He now accuses former Twitter management of intentionally allowing the platform it to become a breeding ground of pedophilia and child sex trafficking.

He claims he’s shutting the offending accounts down after previous management refused to do so.

These accusations have become so totalizing that yesterday Musk drew a rebuke from former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey,

who has been one of Musk’s bigger supporters during the takeover.

South Korea urges EU to team up against US

Seoul’s trade minister says Washington’s actions will have a discriminatory impact on South Korean and European producers

Seoul and Brussels should coordinate their responses to a large-scale subsidy package adopted by the US, South Korean Trade Minister Dukgeun Ahn said on Friday in an interview with EURACTIV.

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), a $430 billion climate protection and social investment plan adopted by the US Congress in August, is designed to battle inflation and reduce energy prices, as well as tackling climate change.

However, it also includes massive subsidies for US-produced electric cars and batteries, sparking major concerns that European and South Korean manufacturers will be significantly disadvantaged.

Ahn said South Korea and the European Union should work together to develop a response to the IRA, which was passed by Congress in August. The EU believes that the law violates competition rules, as it provides incentives for buyers of American electric vehicles.

“We have huge room for the EU and Korea to work together and to make the [IRA] system more compatible with the WTO, so as not to cause unnecessary trouble for strategically important parts of our industry,” Ahn said.

However, he expressed doubt that the law could be changed in the short term.

Ahn suggested the EU and South Korea could work with the US administration “to minimize the discriminatory impact of the IRA,” which offers generous tax breaks for US companies that invest in clean energy and significant subsidies for domestic electric vehicles, batteries and renewable energy projects.

“In case it becomes obvious that they cannot do anything or if they don’t show any willingness to work with us to find a proper solution, we will have to find another alternative,” he said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had previously called for “action” and increased state aid for its own companies in response to the US measures. Bernd Lange, head of the European Parliament’s Trade Committee, said the EU should file a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the act.

EU nations multiply trade with Russia – RIA

Some member states have boosted trade turnover by more than 200%, the news agency says

Three quarters of EU member states boosted their trade turnover with Russia in the first eight months of 2022, RIA Novosti is reporting on Saturday, citing data collected from the bloc's various national statistics departments.

Russia’s trade with Bulgaria and Greece reportedly soared 240% and 230% respectively, while trade turnover with Slovenia doubled during January-to-August period this year. At the same time, Austria and the Czech Republic boosted their trade with the sanctions-hit nation by 80%. Meanwhile, Russia’s trade turnover with both Hungary and Italy surged 70%. Belgium and Cyprus also registered increases, of 60%.

All-in-all, 20 out of the 27 bloc members saw a year-over-year increase of 34% in mutual trade with Russia. In monetary terms the trade turnover surged to €177.3 billion compared to €132.4 billion recorded for the same period a year ago.

At the same time, Russia’s mutual trade with Malta saw a dramatic decline of 80%, while both Denmark and Sweden reduced their trade with the nation by 49%. Luxembourg’s trade turnover with Russia also declined, by 28%. Drops in Russia’s mutual trade with Finland and Lithuania totalled 7% and 6% respectively. Portugal reduced its trade turnover with the nation by 3%.

Trade between these seven countries and Moscow amounted to €14.2 billion, against €17.3 billion a year earlier.

As a result, Russia-EU trade turnover saw an increase of 28% in January-August 2022 compared to the same period a year ago, and amounted to €191.5 billion. Of these, EU exports to Russia totalled €36.2 billion, while imports from Russia amounted to €155.3 billion.

Thus, the EU's trade deficit for the first eight months of the current year amounted to €119.1 billion, reaching its highest since 2008, when it amounted to €151 billion for the entire year.

Ukraine ramps up crackdown on Orthodox Church

The nation’s domestic security agency raided more than a dozen religious sites in Kharkov Region

Ukraine’s domestic security agency, the SBU, conducted a new series of raids on Orthodox Christian churches in northeastern Kharkov Region on Saturday. The operation, which targeted 14 religious institutions, comes amid Kiev’s crackdown on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) over its alleged links to Russia.

The SBU directorate in Kharkov Region claimed it had conducted “counterintelligence activities” as part of the agency’s efforts to “counter the subversive activities of Russian special services in our state.”

The raids are also meant “to prevent the use of religious communities as a cell of the ‘Russian world’” the SBU noted in a post on Facebook, adding that it was searching for individuals who may be undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty as well as for various prohibited actions.

These raids coincided with similar efforts in Kiev Region. On Friday, SBU agents inspected a small monastery in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, identifying 16 “suspicious figures.” The agency claimed that their presence there was illegal.

A similar operation took place in the part of Russia’s Kherson Region currently under Ukrainian control. During the raid on a premises in the Kherson diocese, the SBU claimed it found an unregistered gun, a Russian golden coat of arms, as well as “materials glorifying Russia.”

Ukrainian authorities have been engaged in a campaign against religious institutions allegedly linked to Moscow for months now, raiding Kiev Pechersk Lavra, the country’s main Orthodox Christian monastery, in late November.

The crackdown was supported by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who last week announced new measures seeking to ban religious institutions deemed to have links to Russia in a bid to safeguard the nation’s “spiritual independence.”

His principal target is the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which has been historically tied with Russia, but declared independence from Moscow after it launched its military operation against the neighboring state in late February.

Ukraine has long experienced religious tensions, with a number of entities claiming to be the true Ukrainian Orthodox Church, challenging the authority of the Moscow Patriarchate. The two main rival factions are the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), which is considered by the Russian Orthodox Church to be schismatic.

Russia hands UN details of Ukrainian attacks on civilian targets

Moscow has harshly criticized Western arms shipments to Kiev, claiming they are used to kill civilians in the region

Russia has submitted a letter to the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly offering a detailed description of recurring Ukrainian strikes on civilian targets in Donbass. The document also heavily emphasizes the role the Western-supplied weapons have played in these atrocities.

This comes ahead of a Security Council meeting expected to be held on Friday about Moscow’s initiative to discuss Western arms shipments for Ukraine, First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Dmitry Polyansky said on Telegram. The letter was drafted by the Donetsk-based public organization ‘Fair Protection’, he added.

The NGO appeals to the UN “in connection with the catastrophic humanitarian situation” in Russia’s Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, which was caused by “the inhumane shelling of the civilian population” by Kiev’s forces.

The document offers a compilation of at least a dozen major Ukrainian attacks on Donetsk and neighboring towns between late May and early December. All the destruction and casualties outlined in the report are “mainly due to the supply of weapons to Ukraine from Western countries,” the letter claims.

According to the document, in the past two weeks alone, Kiev’s forces “daily, [and] with special ferocity attack chaotically crowded places of the central districts of Donetsk, Makeevka, Gorlovka, Yasinovataya and Elenovka.” As a result, 22 civilians have been killed and 83 wounded, the report claims.

Since February 17, Ukrainian armed forces have bombed 8,897 residential buildings and 2,113 civil infrastructure facilities in Donbass, including 106 medical and 424 educational institutions, the letter says.

“The obvious purpose of these inhumane acts by Kiev is to terrorize Donbass civilians and cause maximum damage to civilian infrastructure,” the document claimed.

Apart from other weaponry, the attacks used NATO-grade 155mm artillery and US-made HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System), according to the report. The West has also provided Ukraine with Caesar and PzH 2000 self-propelled artillery systems that use shells of the same caliber.

Given the recurring bombardments, ‘Fair Protection’ appealed to the UN Security Council “to consider taking immediate measures” to prevent “these massive war crimes by the armed formations of Ukraine” as well as to put an end to supporting Ukraine with weapons used in attacks.

Russia has repeatedly warned the West against pumping Ukraine with weapons, arguing that this will only prolong the conflict and “bring more suffering” to the country.
