Who Gets the Vaccine First? Furious Lobbying by Interest Groups

Companies, unions and industry trade associations are lobbying governments to include their workers in the next round of virus vaccines.

The chief executive of Uber, the ride-hailing company whose six New York lobbying firms include Albany’s best connected, wrote last week to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo with an ask: priority for its drivers in the next round of coronavirus vaccinations.

Days later, the president of New York’s largest transit union spoke about the same topic with the chairman of the state transit authority, a Cuomo appointee. Not to be outdone, the Hotel Trades Council, a hospitality labor group with an aggressive political arm, urged the state’s health commissioner in a letter on Tuesday to give priority to its members.

Even a presidential elector had hoped to chat with the governor about who was getting vaccine priority — after they both took part in New York’s Electoral College vote.

Among state capitals, New York’s has long stood apart as a venue for favor trading and behind-the-scenes deals. Now, as the coronavirus rages and vaccines remain in short supply, the pandemic has been thrust squarely into the maw of Albany politics.

A state official described the next stage of vaccine prioritization as “the big fight.”

“Everyone is chasing the same thing now, and it really is remarkable,” said James E. McMahon, a veteran Albany lobbyist who represents a school bus company and other firms interested in early vaccination. “The need was there and then there’s the vaccine and all of a sudden, people are saying, ‘Oh Jesus, we’ve got to get in line now.’”

Apparently attuned to the atmosphere,Mr. Cuomo made several pronouncements this past week that his administration would not be swayed by interest groups.

“There will be no political favoritism,” the governor said in a news conference on Wednesday, a message he repeated on Friday.

The question of where groups of workers stand in the line for vaccines has yet to be resolved in New York or in a majority of other states, according to a review by the nonprofit Kaiser Family Foundation. The federal government is expected to issue final recommendations on who should be deemed essential soon. But it is largely up to states to prioritize vaccine distribution among those workers.

Some states, like Illinois, are awaiting further federal guidance for allocation beyond the initial vaccine supplies.

Yes, this is true. I think it would make coins very valuable again. I am thinking a penny would be worth $1, a dime would buy a decent restaurant lunch and so on. This would be a huge and instantaneous closer of the "wealth gap".

Our farmers market (I don't go there now that it was "corporatized") used to allow you to buy $5 wooden coins that you could carry over year to year. I guess some of the farmers didn't have the option, initially, to accept "electronic money" and lot of people didn't carry cash. So you could get these "coins" with your debit or credit card.

Got me thinking about money and alternative currencies, etc. I've been revisiting this idea recently. Simple solution to me is to use the cash we already have except for the trackable larger bills. Make coins great again!

I wish I could say this idea was my own. I had a funny experience once when I gave someone a dollar or some small amount as a tip. Had the impression: "You are giving them a lot of money." ??? Strongly felt that small bills, even the coins would become very valuable. This would be a great help to the poor, many of them probably, like me, have scads of pennies lying around the house.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) -Facebook has taken down content that spread lies in Israel against coronavirus vaccinations as the government seeks to drum up supportfor the programme, the Justice Ministry said on Sunday.

Such “fake news” included arguments that vaccines would be used toplant government tracking chips in recipients’ bodies, to poison them and thus cull the population or to subject them to medical experimentation, the ministry said in a statement.

A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed that four Hebrew-language groups had been taken down as part of the company’s policy against “spreading misinformation regarding the vaccines”.

Israeli officials say the country has enough vaccines on order by year’s end to protect the most vulnerable 20% of the population and then lift some coronavirus curbs, but worry that turnout might be dampened if people get false information about the innoculations.

Israel began administering vaccines to medical staff on Sunday. At Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, dozens of doctors and nurses danced as they prepared to receive their injections.

Next in line are elderly Israelis or those in high-risk groups. The wider adult population is slated to get shots in early 2021.

I think China has a big, big problem. The social control necessary to keep communism going deliberately destroys families. Families produce children.

I don't know about human cloning, etc. But families are vital to humanity. The US birthrate has been attacked via social engineering, Gardasil vaccines, etc. However, we are not very far removed from our Judeo-Christian heritage. With massive numbers of women discovering that their "jobs" are gone from "COVID-19" the centrality of our families may be revived.

I've seen the examples of families discovering that one parent working outside the home can be less expensive than having two parents do so. Think everything from convenience food use, to dry cleaning, to day care, etc. I've also seen the benefits of home schooling allowing not just a good education for the children, but also great flexibility in how the family lives. For example, try shopping for just two children during "back to school season". Now imagine a family with 6 children doing the same. Modern society makes having more than one or two children such an ordeal. It doesn't have to be that way.

As for financing the "American dream", which to me at least is more about forming a family than about material wealth:

American manufacturing has strong potential for a "revival". We can be a lot smarter about it, though. I'm thinking of "open book management" (Great Game of Business) as well as awareness of the environmental risks. Many, many young people can support themselves out of high school with manufacturing jobs (and others can be entrepreneurs, tradespeople, etc). In the development of vaccines against coronaviruses like SARS-COV-1 and MERS in the early 2000’s, researchers found evidence of a serious problem. Teams of U.S. and foreign scientists vaccinated animals with the four most promising vaccines. At first, the experiment seemed successful as all the animals developed a robust antibody response to coronavirus. However, when the scientists exposed the vaccinated animals to the wild virus, the results were horrifying. Vaccinated animals suffered hyper-immune responses including inflammation throughout their bodies, especially in their lungs.

This issue is well known. Early in the COVID-19 scenario, Dr. Peter Hotez, of Baylor College of Medicine, testified before Congress about the dangers of accelerating coronavirus vaccine development, saying “(The) unique safety problem of coronavirus vaccines” was discovered 50 years ago while developing the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccine.”

He went to register that this “‘paradoxical immune enhancement phenomenon’ means vaccinated people may still develop the disease, get sicker and die.”….

Researchers had seen this same “enhanced immune response” during human testing of the failed RSV vaccine tests in the 1950s. The vaccines not only failed to prevent infection; 80% of the children infected required hospitalization, and two children challenged with the RSV died (see Openshaw, 2005). In April of 2020, Hotez told CNN, “If there is immune enhancement in animals, that’s a showstopper.”
