Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer reportedly said that House Republicans went “too far” in removing Democratic Rep. Cynthia A. Johnson from committee assignments after she threatened Trump supporters.

Australia abandons Covid-19 vaccine due to false HIV positives

Australia has cancelled the production of a locally made Covid-19 vaccine after trial volunteers falsely tested positive for HIV, meaning the drug could interfere with diagnosis of that virus.

Antibodies generated by the jabs developed by the University of Queensland (UQ) and biotech firm CSL led to trial subjects wrongly testing positive for the virus that causes AIDS. Further trials have been stopped.

Scientists said the results were a blow to Australia's vaccine development and was likely to force the country to buy more doses of imported shots.

"While this is a tough decision to take, the urgent need for a vaccine has to be everyone's priority," said UQ professor Paul Young.

Australia has ordered a total of 140 million shots from different suppliers, to inoculate its 25 million people, making it one of the most highly stocked countries in the world.

"We want to ensure that Australians … have full confidence, absolute full confidence that when it gets the tick, they can get the jab, and they can make that decision for themselves and for their families, confidently,” said Scott Morrison, prime minister.

Prof Sarah Palmer, from the faculty of medicine at the University of Sydney, said: “Sadly, this is a set-back for the development of Covid-19 vaccines. Generating a false positive for HIV is entirely unexpected for this vaccine, but underscores the critical necessity of testing the safety of newly-developed vaccines in large numbers of volunteers.”

She said the Australian government, which was a major backer of the UQ vaccine effort, would have to consider funding other alternatives, including imported vaccine from firms such as Pfizer and Moderna.”

Australia's strict quarantine regime has seen the country quash earlier outbreaks and its tally of 28,000 infections is far fewer than in many other developed countries

Its success in keeping a lid on infections has meant the country is not racing to start vaccinations like countries in Europe and jabs are not scheduled to begin until March.

CSL, had been under a contract to produce 51 million doses of the UQ vaccine, and will instead produce an extra 20 million doses of the Oxford vaccine being developed with Britain's AstraZeneca.

US Pentagon signals it will stop supporting CIA’s counterterrorism mission

THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT of Defense has reportedly notified the Central Intelligence Agency that it plans to terminate most of the military support it provides for the spy agency’s counterterrorism operations. Some of these changes may occur as early as January, according to reports published on Thursday in several US news outlets.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the CIA incorporated an increasingly expansive counterterrorist mission into its list of activities. But it has relied on Pentagon resources to support many of these activities, for things like transportation, physical security, logistics, and even execution. The Pentagon’s role in these activities tends to be crucial, given that they usually take place in active combat zones or other dangerous locations around the world. They therefore require heavy military protection.

However, President Trump has been implementing his plan to withdraw American military forces from warzones such as Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq. These troops provide logistical and material support to CIA missions in some of the world’s most dangerous regions. Additionally, the Department of Defense has been signaling for quite some time its intention to focus less on counterterrorism and more on what experts refer to as “near-peer competitors” —namely China and Russia.

According to reports, Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller sent a letter to CIA Director Gina Haspel, in which he informs her of the Pentagon’s decision to make drastic changes to its support for the spy agency’s counterterrorism operations. It is believed that some of these changes will take place as early as January 5, 2021. It has also been reported that this decision marks the culmination of a so-called “pet project” of Acting Under-Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Ezra Cohen-Watnick, a Trump political appointee, who was placed in his current position by the president following November’s election.

Two Georgia Correctional Officers Indicted for Civil Rights and Related Offenses for Assaulting Inmates

Yesterday, a federal grand jury in Macon, Georgia, returned a 4-count indictment against former supervisory correctional officer Sergeant Patrick Sharpe, 29, and former correctional officer Jamal Scott, 33, of the Valdosta State Prison (VSP) for their roles in using excessive force against inmates incarcerated at the facility.

The indictment charges Sharpe and Scott with conspiring to assault, and aiding and abetting one another in the assault of, inmate F.G., in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 241 (conspiracy against rights) and 18 U.S.C. § 242 (deprivation of rights under color of law). Specifically, the indictment charges that on Dec. 29, 2018, Sharpe instructed Scott and another correctional officer named Brian Ford to assault inmate F.G., despite the fact that F.G. was handcuffed and compliant. In response, Scott and Ford struck F.G. multiple times in the body, resulting in bodily injury to F.G. Brian Ford previously pleaded guilty on Nov. 9, 2020, to depriving F.G. of his civil rights.

The indictment also charges that on Sept. 24, 2018, Sharpe assaulted inmate M.B. by striking M.B. in the face and head with handcuffs wrapped around his fist, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 242, and then making false statements to Special Agents with the FBI about his conduct, in violation of 18. U.S.C. § 1001.

The maximum penalty for the deprivation-of-rights and conspiracy offenses is 10 years of imprisonment, and the maximum penalty for the false statements offense is five years of imprisonment.

An indictment is merely an accusation, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The FBI conducted the investigation. Trial Attorneys Katherine G. DeVar and Nicole Raspa of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, are prosecuting the case, with assistance from Criminal Chief Michael Solis of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia.

Online child sexual exploitation is a global crime that demands a continued global response. And yet an expansion of the “ePrivacy Directive” slated to take effect in the European Union this month may prohibit tech companies from using some of the most powerful tools available to detect child sexual abuse material and grooming by predators, making it easier for children to be exploited without detection. We commend Senators Cotton, Loeffler, and Boozman for introducing a resolution that encourages the EU to preserve companies’ ability to detect and prevent child exploitation, consistent with the Voluntary Principles to Counter Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse.

Since discovering the major role Venus plays as the day star in the nativity story in 2014, I’ve prided myself in seeing how close to sunrise I can still see the star before it fades into the white morning sky. I’ll be discussing this issue in more detail in an upcoming lesson.

I want to share what I noticed on this morning’s walk as it relates to what was discussed in lesson 2 regarding atmospherics and the visibility of stars. Lately, I’ve been starting my walks 30-40 minutes before sunrise after it becomes light enough to see where I’m going. Today’s walk started earlier, at 6:15 (it was significantly darker than usual but still light enough to see) about an hour before sunrise because I wanted update and mark the spots and references where I can normally observe Venus along my route. During the summer when Venus didn’t change position on a daily basis (and when it wasn’t obscured by smoke) my reference points remained pretty consistent for a week or more. But now, Venus’ location in the morning sky at specific times changes almost daily.

As I began this morning’s walk, it was clear skies with no clouds. The sky was perfectly dark blue as it lightened toward the eastern horizon and Venus was shining brilliantly in the SE sky (about 15 degrees above the horizon) while the crescent moon, higher and about 30 degrees to the west, shone brightly as well. About five minutes into the walk it happened. Remember, it was about an hour before sunrise and still pretty dark. As I observed the panorama of the sky from east to south, it struck me that nothing else was visible in that bright, dark sky except Venus and the Moon. Not a single star. During the summer, Sirius, the brightest star, was occasionally visible in the SW sky at the start of my walks, but by this morning it had already settled below the western horizon. I looked around to the north to see if any of the stars in the northern constellations, the Big Dipper or any stars in the western sky were visible. Nothing. So, there I was, out in the middle of a beautiful, clear, cold morning, nearly an hour before sunrise and the sky was virtually empty. I thought about the photo of the night sky over Masada presented in lesson 2 and how full the night sky was of God’s glory. But, here in Mountain Ranch on a dark, clear morning, nearly an hour before sunrise, all of God’s glory had faded into the early morning light, all except for the Christ star, Venus and the Moon. When my gaze returned to Venus, shining ever so brightly, it appeared as if it would never diminish or go away and - I could feel Christ’s presence. It seemed that the Lord, through the star, was reminding me that while everything else may fade away, He was saying, “I am your rock, and your salvation. I will never fade away”. It brought to mind the words of a hymn, Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full at his wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and Grace. Christ, through Venus, provided that glory and grace for me this morning.

I share this with you because I know there are some who might be skeptical about the Christmas star story and possibly the words I’m about to present, even though they are based on a literal interpretation of Scripture. So, I would very much encourage those with doubts to take advantage of this opportunity to observe the morning sky and determine for yourself whether or not Venus could be the Christ or Messiah star. I recommend that you find a spot with a good view of the eastern and southeastern sky, then spend some time observing Venus and the morning sky (preferably between 6-6:30 AM). After checking out the morning sky turn your attention back to Venus, and while gazing at the star, ask yourself this question, “If I were God, and could choose any celestial object as a sign to let the world know that Christ, our salvation, had entered our world and that it would become a perpetual reminder of Christ’s presence with and in us and that He will never leave or forsake us, what celestial object would I choose?” I’m reminded of the promise God gave Noah when He established the rainbow as His covenant promise to never again destroy the world with water. My hope and prayer with these next few lessons is to make the case that God not only chose Venus to be the Christ Star, but that He was fully capable of temporarily turning the Christ star into the Christmas Star as well.
