Trump has come up with ‘frivolous, baseless claims’ of voter fraud: Nevada AG Aaron Ford

The Trump campaign has vowed to fight election results that declared former Vice President Joe Biden as President-elect, “to ensure election laws are fully upheld and the rightful winner is seated,” the campaign said in a statement.

Since Election Day, the campaign has sued Nevada, Georgia, Michigan, and Pennsylvania — battleground states where the margins were razor thin or the election results are still outstanding. The lawsuits have largely focused on disqualifying ballots or preventing vote counts from continuing, but the claims have so far lacked evidence.

“All four of the lawsuits that the Trump administration has filed in our state have been thrown out that I have been participating in,” explained Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford. “They continue to come with frivolous, baseless claims of speculation about voter fraud that's widespread, that ostensibly is changing the results of the election. And we continue to get them tossed out of court.”

One allegation the Trump campaign makes is that dead people voted in the election, said Ford, “but they've not filed a complaint with my office. They continue to operate through the media as a PR stunt to blow up my timeline on Twitter to make it appear as though we're not doing our job, when the fact is, they have not presented a complaint with us that we can even verify, let alone investigate.”

Ford said he was “confident” in the results of the election, and noted that the Secretary of State in Nevada who oversees the election is a Republican, with most counties in the state leaning Republican.

“They have, at every step of the way, attempted to undermine this sacrosanct franchise of voting. We have defeated them at every single turn,” he said, referring to President Trump’s campaign. “And if they have any other tricks up their sleeves, we are prepared.”

The lawful process of voting

The AG said he is ready to prosecute anyone who has committed voter fraud, noting that he is currently prosecuting someone who voted twice in the last election.

“So if they have credible threats or credible proof, we will look into it. And it will be taken care of,” Ford said.

Voting by mail, the AG explained, was made possible to all voters by the state’s legislators to limit voters’ exposure to coronavirus. Given that it was done in accordance with the state’s laws, Ford said he feels “entirely confident in any legal challenge” that might come.

“Which is why we’ve won every single lawsuit that the Trump administration or any of their surrogates have brought against us,” he said, adding that Trump’s intent and effort have been to undermine the election, including “sabotaging the United States Postal Service.”

“I will leave the hysteria and the hyperbole to those who want to undermine this process and do my job, which is to defend the lawful process to ensure that every lawful vote that has been cast is going to be counted,” Ford said.

If you want to wrestle control of your personal data from companies, governments, hospitals and other organizations, a startup called Inrupt could be an ally. The company's idea: store your personal information separately and share only what's necessary with services only when you're accessing them.

Inrupt calls these data collections "pods," and they can be accessed using the company's open-source data storage technology called Solid. You could store fitness data, for example, then share it when your doctor's Solid app requested access. Or you could store your photos in a pod, pay one Solid app provider to pick your best shots, then pay another to print them.

A big name behind Inrupt is Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the world wide web. Berners-Lee, who serves as chief technology officer, co-founded the company with Chief Executive John Bruce. Inrupt has been testing its service with the BBC, NatWest Bank and the National Health Service in the UK, and with the Flanders government in recent months. On Monday, the company made its Enterprise Solid Server, the infrastructure that supports the service, available to any interested customer.

"The technologies we're releasing today are a component of a much-needed course correction for the web," Berners-Lee said in a statement. "Ultimately, this new foundation of trust and cooperation will lead to entirely new business models that actually benefit users as well."

Widespread adoption of Inrupt if it succeeds could mark a turning point for the internet, prompting a move away from apps and services that harvest your data in order to serve personalized ads. The flip side is that many services that are now free to use, like web based email, could end up charging customers fees.

Inrupt's launch comes as privacy becomes a bigger concern in the tech industry, whose reputation has suffered with high-profile scandals like Facebook's Cambridge Analytica affair. Legislation including Europe's General Data Protection Regulation and the California Consumer Privacy Act could tilt the balance toward privacy – and Inrupt business success.

Berners-Lee also is chairman of the World Wide Web Consortium standards group, but Inrupt CTO is his primary, full-time job, Bruce told CNET.

Challenges for Solid and Inrupt include attracting a critical mass of people, businesses and other organizations to embrace it; making it easy enough to use that its benefits outweigh the hassles; and ensuring it doesn't become a new channel for abuse and hacks. Californians sided with corporations on the future of gig work, decided against affirmative action, and nixed both stronger rent control and a new business tax that benefits schools and local governments.

“California is the most misunderstood state in the country,” said the political scientist Bruce Cain, who teaches on the American west at Stanford University. “It has always been that way.”

California continues to produce some of the most influential and oppositional politicians on both sides. The Golden state is home to some of the most prominent conservative voices, including the House minority leader, Kevin McCarthy, and the Trump-allied congressman Devin Nunes. It is also home to the Democratic House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and the House intelligence committee chairman, Adam Schiff – all of whom secured new terms this election.

It still has large swaths of red territory hidden behind a Democratic super-majority in the state house. Vice-President-Elect Kamala Harris, who hails from the Bay Area, is the only California Democrat who has made it to the White House. Before the 1990s, a largely Republican-held California sent Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan to the national stage.

That’s why, Cain said, it shouldn’t be surprising to see some hard-fought congressional seats slipping from Democrats this year. “These were in many instances Republican seats that were held for a decade or two, sometimes longer,” he said. “It didn’t take much to tip it away – those seats were really on loan.”

The sharp ideological divide, embodied by the big battle at the top of the ticket, also encouraged Californians across the political spectrum to weigh in. They said they saw this election as the most consequential of their lifetime and, according to surveys done by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), roughly three-quarters of respondents said they were more enthusiastic about voting than ever before. They were not just Democrats.

“The enthusiasm about voting was similar among Democrats and Republicans,” said Mark Baldassare, PPIC’s President. “We are a blue state, but it meant that Republicans were going to turn out in California even if the presidential election was a foregone conclusion.” The election brought roughly 22 million people to the polls, according to statistics from the California secretary of state – the most in the state’s history—and roughly 88% of eligible residents were registered.

“In what everybody was expecting was going to be a blue wave election, it looks like a few of the seats will turn Republican again,” Baldassare said, adding that focus on the presidential election and representatives also could have clouded concentration and understanding of California’s complicated 12 state propositions.

“This was a particularly challenging year for ballot measures,” he said. Along with the attention-suck from the race for the white house, Californians were thinking about the pandemic, wildfires, and the homelessness and housing crisis. “They looked through the ballot trying to get some sense of: what should I do? What’s going to help the problems that I am seeing now and where are the solutions? Who can I trust?”

California’s propositions give power to voters to determine proposed changes to state law, but all that is needed to get a proposition on the ballot in California is $2,000 and enough signatures to constitute at least 5% of the voting public. (Measures proposing changes to the state constitution require signatures from 8% of the electorate.)
