The mystery of the Murray-Darling’s vanishing flows

It might be the biggest whodunnit — or what-dunnit — in Australia.

More than 2 trillion litres of water — enough to fill Sydney Harbour four and a half times — has gone missing from our largest and most precious river system — the Murray-Darling Basin.

And it’s happened in what was already one of the driest periods the basin has seen.

According to an investigation by some of Australia’s top water scientists, shared exclusively with the ABC, 20 per cent of the water expected to flow down the rivers from 2012-2019 was simply not there. That’s despite almost $7 billion being spent to protect the health of the system’s rivers and ecosystems that rely on them.

Was it stolen? Was it lost? Has climate change made it go up in steam? Or was it simply never there in the first place?

There are clues scattered up and down the rivers but one simple message is clear in the scientists’ findings. For the first time, they provide evidence that the Murray-Darling Basin Plan — the most expensive environmental program in Australia’s history — is delivering much less water than was expected.

And the implications could be huge.

It covers a seventh of the continent, is home to nearly 10 per cent of Australia's people, and produces a third of our food.

This enormous network of rivers, creeks, wetlands and valleys is what's known as the Murray-Darling Basin.

To save the struggling river system, by 2019, federal and state governments had spent $6.7 billion, recovering 2.1 trillion litres of water to put back into the rivers.

At the beginning of this medical psy-op, Dr. Anthony Fauci told the world that millions would die in the US of COVID-19, which of course didn't happen. Yet, the media worldwide is still reacting like it did.

Over and over again we are told by the CDC and WHO via the controlled media, "More cases are being reported", "Cases are on the rise" and "There's been a surge in cases". The non-stop repeating of these phrases is a form of brainwashing. It is meant to put us in a state of fear and panic where we no longer have the ability to think for ourselves. We become helpless obedient sheep.

We are meant to believe that all cases represent very sick contagious people that are in our community, that can infect us and/or our loved ones. This is not a reality. While someone may be genuinely sick from this virus. Most people didn't even know they had the virus, many had mild symptoms, and near 80% of deaths were elderly people with pre-existing conditions. The recovery rate is over 99%. It was recently announced by the CDC that 6% of the 153,504 deaths recorded actually died from COVID-19, that's 9,210 deaths, the other 94% had 2-3 serious health conditions with advanced age.

Keep in mind that the virus peaked (in deaths) in April and morphed several times since, with a death rate on par with a regular flu season. This is why we hear mainly of cases today (August 31st) and not many deaths.

WHAT DO "CASES" REALLY MEAN?

Let's look at testing. The inventor of the RT-PCR Diagnostic Panel or PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test was a scientist named Kary Mullis. He said the PCR should never be used as a tool in "the diagnosis of infectious diseases."

Why is that?

The process is very complicated but simply stated, the PCR test does not look for the virus and is non-binary, meaning it actually doesn't determine a false or positive reading. It looks for tiny strands of foreign non-human DNA, which are then compared with various partial viral DNA, these tiny strands are then cycled or amplified several times, creating possibly a billion or more copies of the original sample. The problem is, the more you cycle, the more you have false positives.

The PCR test cannot determine viral load, so you may have a tiny strand of non-active viral material in you, and depending on the amount of cycling, you could test positive. That's a problem.

It should be noted that SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19 has never been isolated 100% thus no gold standard or passing Koch's postulates - a series of 4 conditions that must be met to establish an infectious agent as the cause of a particular disease or condition. So what does the PCR test look for, if we don't know exactly what we are looking at?

Britain is not entering a second wave of coronavirus infections and the young, mildly-affected people being diagnosed in rising case numbers are not likely to trigger a rise in hospitalisations, experts say.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock yesterday warned that the UK 'must do everything in our power' to stop a second surge of people going into hospital with the coronavirus, which he said was starting to happen in Europe.

But experts told MailOnline Mr Hancock's comments were 'alarmist' and that there is currently 'no sign' of a second wave coming over the horizon. The data shows hospital cases are also not rising by much in Europe, contrary to the Health Secretary's claim.

As of yesterday there were only 764 people in hospital with Covid-19 in the UK, just 60 of whom are in intensive care. This is a sharp drop from a peak of 19,872 hospitalised patients on April 12.

The falling number of hospital cases comes despite infections having been on the rise since lockdown restrictions were lifted at the start of July. Experts say this is because the groups getting infected and diagnosed now are completely different to those at the start of the pandemic.

Scientists say it is younger people driving up infections and they are less likely to get seriously ill and end up in hospital. For that reason, hospital cases and deaths will not necessarily follow higher cases, and there may not be a deadly wave like the first.

Another 1,295 people were diagnosed with the virus in Britain yesterday, following 1,406 the day before, and the seven-day average number of daily cases is now 1,339 – a 27 per cent increase on last Tuesday and the highest since June 11.

Professor Carl Heneghan, a medicine expert at the University of Oxford, said: 'There is currently no second wave. What we are seeing is a sharp rise in the number of healthy people who are carrying the virus, but exhibiting no symptoms. Almost all of them are young. They are being spotted because – finally – a comprehensive system of national test and trace is in place.'

When you visit your doctor, you might assume that the treatment they prescribe has solid evidence to back it up. But you’d be wrong. Only one in ten medical treatments are supported by high-quality evidence, our latest research shows.

The analysis, which is published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, included 154 Cochrane systematic reviews published between 2015 and 2019. Only 15 (9.9%) had high-quality evidence according to the gold-standard method for determining whether they provide high or low-quality evidence, called GRADE (grading of recommendations, assessment, development and evaluation). Among these, only two had statistically significant results – meaning that the results were unlikely to have arisen due to random error – and were believed by the review authors to be useful in clinical practice. Using the same system, 37% had moderate, 31% had low, and 22% had very low-quality evidence.

The GRADE system looks at things like risk of bias. For example, studies that are “blinded” – in which patients don’t know whether they are getting the actual treatment or a placebo – offer higher-quality evidence than “unblinded” studies. Blinding is important because people who know what treatment they are getting can experience greater placebo effects than those who do not know what treatment they are getting.

Among other things, GRADE also considers whether the studies were imprecise because of differences in the way the treatment was used. In the 2016 review, researchers found that 13.5% – about one in seven – reported that treatments were supported by high-quality evidence. Lack of high-quality evidence, according to GRADE, means that future studies might overturn the results.

The 154 studies were chosen because they were updates of a previous review of 608 systematic reviews, conducted in 2016. This allows us to check whether reviews that had been updated with new evidence had higher-quality evidence. They didn’t. In the 2016 study, 13.5% reported that treatments were supported by high-quality evidence, so there was a trend towards lower quality as more evidence was gathered.

There were a few limitations to the study. First, the sample size in the study may not have been representative, and other studies have found that over 40% of medical treatments are likely to be effective. Also, the sample in the study was not large enough to check whether there were certain types of medical treatments (pharmacological, surgical, psychological) that were better than others. It is also possible that the “gold standard” for ranking evidence (GRADE) is too strict.
