The Renewed CDC Eviction Moratorium Is an Unlawful Powerplay and Fundamentally Damages More Than Just the Rule of Law

On August 3, 2021, the Biden administration – through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) — re-instituted a rental eviction moratorium after an earlier moratorium issued by the Trump administration CDC expired at the end of July. Incredibly, the government took this action although it knows full well that the moratorium is unlawful and is sure to be struck down by the courts. The Biden administration’s action is nothing more and nothing less than a gross abuse of the government’s regulatory power: the assertion of supremacy over the rights of citizens regardless of the legality of the action.

Indeed, as even CNN reported, President Biden “did not sound particularly confident his administration’s new freeze on evictions would hold up in court when he explained the move in the East Room this week. Instead, he said the new ban, even if challenged, would at least ‘give some additional time’ for billions in unspent housing relief dollars to reach those in need.” Left unsaid by Biden was that the motive for renewing the moratorium was to appease the left wing of his party, which was clamoring for the renewal. In other words, for the left, the renewed moratorium is purely a cynical exercise in political expediency. For the right, it is also an entirely unacceptable violation of the rule of law and the proper functioning of government.

Those kinds of issues are normally resolved in the courts and, indeed, litigation over the initial moratorium had been wending its way through various federal courts since 2020. One case finally reached the Supreme Court in June on a petition asking the Court to remove a stay of the trial judge’s decision that the moratorium was unlawful. On June 29, 2021, the Supreme Court clearly signaled that a majority of its members agree with the district court that the moratorium exceeds the CDC’s authority. In ordinary circumstances, that would have caused the Court to vacate the stay and let the trial court’s order striking down the moratorium take effect. But because the moratorium was set to expire only one month later, Justice Kavanaugh — who was the swing vote — decided it would be more disruptive to lift the stay immediately than to let it expire in due course.....

Billionaire-backed mining firm to seek electric vehicle metals in Greenland

COPENHAGEN, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Mineral exploration company KoBold Metals, backed by billionaires including Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, has signed an agreement with London-listed Bluejay Mining (JAY.L) to search in Greenland for critical materials used in electric vehicles.

KoBold, which uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to hunt for raw materials, will pay $15 million in exploration funding for the Disko-Nuussuaq project on Greenland's west coast in exchange for a 51% stake in the project, Bluejay said in a statement.

Shares in BlueJay traded 26% higher on the news.

The license holds metals such as nickel, copper, cobalt and platinum and the funding will cover evaluation and initial drilling.

Oil Tumbles After Report Biden Will Call On OPEC To Boost Oil Output

Remember when Trump would blast OPEC on twitter, demanding the cartel boost output to lower the price of oil? Well, now that gasoline prices are well above $5/gallon for the first time in a decade, this is yet another Trump idea that is being adopted by the Biden administration and this morning, oil plunged dropping more than a $1 after CNBC reported that taking a page right out of the Trump twitter feed, the White House "will call on OPEC and its oil-producing allies to boost production in an effort to combat climbing gasoline prices, amid concerns that rising inflation could derail the economic recovery from Covid-19."

According to the report, officials from the Biden Administration spoke with representatives from OPEC’s de facto leader Saudi Arabia this week, as well as with representatives from the United Arab Emirates and other OPEC+ members.

The White House said the group’s July agreement to boost production by 400,000 barrels per day on a monthly basis beginning in August and stretching into 2022 is “simply not enough” during a “critical moment in the global recovery.”

“We are engaging with relevant OPEC+ members on the importance of competitive markets in setting prices,” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in the statement obtained by CNBC. “Competitive energy markets will ensure reliable and stable energy supplies, and OPEC+ must do more to support the recovery.”

The only issue is that unlike the Trump admin, which held Saudi Arabia in highest regard and where the Crown Prince would actually listen, when it comes to the Biden admin which has done nothing but bashed Riyadh, we are confident that the Saudis will do absolutely nothing in response, especially since oil is already sliding amid concerns that rising delta cases will lead to a steep demand drop at a time when OPEC+ is already increasing supply on a monthly basis. Still, Biden has to do something: after all gas prices are soaring as demand for petroleum products returns, with the national average for a gallon of gas stood at $3.186 on Tuesday, according to AAA, up from $3.143 a month ago. Over the last year, prices are up by just over $1. In May, the national average crossed the $3 mark for the first time since 2014, and as every politician knows, the fastest way to lose any election is at the gas pump.

“The president recognizes that gas prices can put a pinch on the family budget,” a senior White House official said. “He’d like his administration to use whatever tools that it has to help address the cost of gas, to help bring those prices down.”

Meanwhile, despite recently agreeing to gradually boost output gradually amid concerns of uneven demand in a world still plagued by a pandemic, OPEC+ is still withholding about six million barrels per day from its pre-covid output levels, which it plans to gradually return to the market. The group’s latest meeting ended in disarray after the UAE took issue with its baseline quota, briefly sending the oil market into turmoil. The group eventually came to an agreement later in July.

In response to the CNBC report, Brent futures tumbled 1.6%, although we doubt that this move will last, especially after the latest API data showed that motor fuel stockpiles fell by 1.11 million barrels last week, pushing prices 2.7% higher on Tuesday. That would be the fourth weekly draw, the longest run of declines since September, if confirmed by official figures due later Wednesday.

Michael Vachon, an adviser to Soros, did not dispute the comment,

though he stressed that there was no transcript of a private gathering to check.

Vachon also clarified that the longtime progressive giver was not referring to a primary challenge to the president.

"Mr. Soros fully supports the president as the leader of the Democratic Party," said Vachon.

"He was not suggesting that we seek another candidate for 2012.

His comments were made in a private, informal conversation that was about the need for progressives to be more forceful in promoting their agenda.

Hackers Start Returning $600 Million Stolen In Record-Breaking DeFi Hack

The hacker now appears to be asking for donations for his (or her) decision to return their ill-gotten gains...Just as crypto-bulls were celebrating the recent market rally, news of a record-setting $600MM hack of the cross-chain protocol Poly Network spoiled the party by reviving security concerns that have dogged the crypto universe, in one way or another, since the collapse of Mt. Gox back in 2014. Across the world, hodlers were left to look on helplessly as the hacker transferred the funds to a handful of addresses, which immediately became the focus of intense scrutiny as the world speculated about the identity of the hackers.

Well, as it turns out, the whole thing was for show, because the hackers have already started returning the stolen coins after contacting the Poly Network early Wednesday morning to say they were ready to return the money...In response, Poly Network’s Twitter account provided three separate wallet addresses for the hacker to return the stolen coins to the network. “We are preparing a multisig address controlled by known Poly addresses,” Poly Network noted in a response message also embedded in an ethereum transaction, as the screenshot shows.

So far, nearly $4.8MM of the $600MM in stolen funds had been successfully returned. So far, we have received a total value of $4,772,297.675 assets returned by the hacker.

Details are still sketchy, but cross-chain developer O3 Labs suggested the hacker might be a "white hat" looking to draw attention to security flaws. This wouldn't be the first time a hacker returned stolen coins.

According to data obtained by crypto journalist Colin Wu, the hacker has also returned $2.65MM in stolen Shiba Inu and Fei that were also stolen during the hack. The hack initially targeted Ethereum, Binance Chain, and the Polygon network.

Crypto security experts celebrated the hacker's decision, with Dr. Tom Robinson, co-founder and chief scientist at Elliptic, telling Zero Hedge that "this demonstrates that even if you can steal crypto assets, laundering them and cashing out is extremely difficult, due to the transparency of the blockchain and the use of blockchain analytics. In this case, the hacker concluded that the safest option was just to return the stolen funds. "

Still, the growing popularity of DeFi (decentralized finance) networks and tokens is making the sector an attractive target for hackers. One research firm estimated nearly $300MM has already been stolen in other hacks.

For now, it looks like the hackers will return the entirety of the stolen funds. Next time, they might not be so lucky.

Deer infections, vaccination nudges and predicting ‘breakthrough’ COVID cases

One-third of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the northeastern United States have antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 — a sign that they have been infected with the virus.

The findings, reported in a preprint on 29 July (J. C. Chandler et al. preprint at bioRxiv https://doi.org/gmc8t6; 2021), represent the first detection of widespread exposure to the virus in a population of wild animals.

There are concerns about the emergence of new animal ‘reservoirs’ — animal populations that harbour SARS‑CoV-2. Previous laboratory experiments have shown that white-tailed deer can become infected with the coronavirus and transmit it to other deer. In the wild, the animals live in herds, which could make it easier for the virus to spread.

Scientists at the US Department of Agriculture in Fort Collins, Colorado, and Ames, Iowa, tested 385 deer blood samples collected as part of regular wildlife surveillance between January and March 2021 in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois and New York state. They found that a striking 40% of the samples contained SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, which are produced in response to infection. None of the surveyed deer showed signs of illness.
