In many Swiss cantons, and in particular in all the French-speaking cantons except Geneva, a breakdown of emergency numbers was observed during the night from Thursday to Friday.
The emergency numbers of several cantons were victims of a telephone failure during the night from Thursday to Friday (symbolic image).
Emergency numbers were affected by blackouts, total or partial, in much of Switzerland during the night from Thursday to Friday. In French-speaking Switzerland, disturbances were recorded in all cantons except Geneva.
Numbers 112, 117, 118 and 144 cannot be reached in the cantons of Friborg, Vaud and Jura. In the canton of Neuchâtel, emergency numbers are no longer reachable from mobile phones while in Valais, it is the emergency center of the cantonal police which is affected by the disturbances, according to Alert Swiss

Suppose you are in the business of generating passwords, it would probably be a good idea to use an additional source of entropy other than the current time, but for a long time, that's all Kaspersky Password Manager (KPM) used. In a blog post to cap off an almost two year saga, Ledger Donjon head of security research Jean-Baptiste Bedrune showed KPM was doing just that. "Kaspersky Password Manager used a complex method to generate its passwords. This method aimed to create passwords hard to break for standard password crackers. However, such method lowers the strength of the generated passwords against dedicated tools," Bedrune wrote.
One of the techniques used by KPM was to make letters that are not often used appear more frequently, which Bedrune said was probably an attempt to trick password cracking tools. "Their password cracking method relies on the fact that there are probably 'e' and 'a' in a password created by a human than 'x' or 'j', or that the bigrams 'th' and 'he' will appear much more often than 'qx' or 'zr'," he said. "Passwords generated by KPM will be, on average, far in the list of candidate passwords tested by these tools. If an attacker tries to crack a list of passwords generated by KPM, he will probably wait quite a long time until the first one is found. This is quite clever." The flip side was that if an attacker could deduce that KPM was used, then the bias in the password generator started to work against it.
"If an attacker knows a person uses KPM, he will be able to break his password much more easily than a fully random password. Our recommendation is, however, to generate random passwords long enough to be too strong to be broken by a tool." The big mistake made by KPM though was using the current system time in seconds as the seed into a Mersenne Twister pseudorandom number generator. "It means every instance of Kaspersky Password Manager in the world will generate the exact same password at a given second," Bedrune said. Because the program has an animation that takes longer than a second when a password is created, Bedrune said it could be why this issue was not discovered. "The consequences are obviously bad: every password could be bruteforced," he said. Bedrune added due to sites often showing account creation time, that would leave KPM users vulnerable to a bruteforce attack of around 100 possible passwords.
Well duh you see we are not compromised, we are just using certain less often used letters more often to trick password cracking tools, kek, it was to improve security somehow, it was just a bug, we swear.

FDA Moves Toward Monopoly Medicine
A well-organized, coordinated campaign from the FDA and Big Pharma is threatening access to the supplements you depend on. Using the false premise that supplements are unsafe, the FDA is working to gain more power over the regulation of supplements in order to further solidify Big Pharma’s monopoly over medicine. These efforts must be opposed.....
The stated purpose for mandatory listing is to improve the FDA’s ability to root out these kinds of bad actors who sell dangerous products, since the agency claims it has little information about the thousands of products on the market. It is a laudable goal, but the FDA already has the authority to go after companies that break the law and use illegal ingredients, including those referenced in the news articles this week. The agency can, and has, enforced this law, as it should.
Using safety as a justification to give the FDA more power over supplements is a smokescreen because we know that supplements are overwhelmingly safe. The report language refers to 23,000 hospitalizations from supplements. To put this in perspective, acetaminophen alone causes 50,000 emergency room visits and 25,000 hospitalizations every year. So, even if we accept the government’s figure, all dietary supplements cause as many hospitalizations as a single drug. Properly prescribed drugs are estimated to cause 1.9 million hospitalizations a year.
Do supplements really cause 23,000 hospitalizations per year? This number comes from a 2015 Department of Health and Human Services-funded study, and we issued a critique when it was released. More details are provided in that coverage, but we’ll briefly note here that over 20% of the cases analyzed were the result of unsupervised children swallowing pills and 40% of cases among those 65 and older were caused by choking.
The idea that supplements are unsafe and more regulation is needed doesn’t pass the laugh test. So why would the FDA want more power to go after supplements which are overwhelmingly safe, during a pandemic in which the evidence shows supplements can help support health?
We believe this is about extending Big Pharma’s monopoly power over medicine. A mandatory list could be used by the FDA to target and eliminate supplements that have not yet complied with the agency’s over-reaching “new supplement” policy. Recall that the FDA’s “new supplement” guidance seeks to impose drug-like pre-approval requirements on all “new supplements” that came to the market after 1994. The “new supplement” policy has not been completed yet, having languished in draft form since 2011. But the FDA just indicated that its goal is to complete this policy by the end of June 2022.....
Action Alert! Write to Congress and tell them to oppose any effort to establish a mandatory list for supplements. Please send your message immediately.

The number of legal challenges Google is facing continues to grow as a coalition of attorneys general from 36 states and the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit against the search giant on Wednesday alleging the company is engaged in anti-competitive behavior and monopolizing the Play Store.
Google is currently facing three other federal antitrust lawsuits, including one from the Justice Department that alleges the company's dominant search engine has allowed it to become a "monopoly gatekeeper" of the internet. But Wednesday's lawsuit is the first to challenge Google's new policy to force all app developers who want to use the Play Store to pay a 30% commission on sales. The new policy from Google will go into effect in September.
"To collect and maintain this extravagant commission, Google has employed anti-competitive tactics to diminish and disincentivize competition in Android app distribution," the lawsuit claims. It adds, "Google has not only targeted potentially competing app stores, but also has ensured that app developers themselves have no reasonable choice but to distribute their apps through the Google Play Store."...

To support state and local communication and outreach efforts, ASPE developed state, county, and sub-state level predictions of hesitancy rates using the most recently available federal survey data, the Household Pulse Survey from May 26-June 7, 2021. This page includes an interactive map, a pdf file with a methodological description, and datasets for download. Additionally, this page includes an issue brief that explores vaccine hesitancy among different geographic areas and sociodemographic groups, models which factors are associated with vaccine hesitancy, and examines changing trends over time.
The interactive map below shows estimates of the percent of the population in each county that may be vaccine hesitant. Additional data, including estimates of strong vaccine hesitancy and demographics can be viewed by clicking on an individual county. For estimates of vaccine hesitancy by PUMA, please click here. PUMAs are Public-Use Microdata Areas, local areas of roughly 100,000 people, as defined in the American Community Survey.
