NEMS (short for NanoElectroMechanical System)

are devices that integrate electrical and mechanical functionality at the nanoscale,

i.e., at or below 100 nanometers.

They are the advanced level of miniaturization after MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical System)

NEMS has several fascinating attributes:

provide access to fundamental frequencies in the microwave range,

force sensitivities at the attonewton level, heat capacities far below a yoctocalorie,

active masses in the femtogram range, mass sensitivity at the levels of individual molecules

— the list goes on.

NEMS mostly contains apparatuses like actuators, sensors, resonators, beams, sensors, and motors.

These components transform one form of energy into another, which can then be easily measured and utilized.

Early Examples of NEMS

The invention of Multi-gate MOSFETs in 1989 allowed several companies, including Intel, IBM, AMD,

and Samsung Electronics, to create ever-smaller microprocessors and memory cells.

MOSFET is now considered the basic building block of modern electronics.

MOSFET is also one of the most manufactured devices in history.

As of 2018, about 13 sextillion (or 13 thousand trillion) MOSFETs were manufactured.

How Are NEMS Devices Manufactured?

NEMS can be fabricated using two complementary approaches:

Top-down approach:

It uses conventional microfabrication techniques, such as electron or optical beam lithography and thermal treatments, to build devices.

Bottom-up approach:

It uses the chemical characteristics of molecules to organize or assemble them in the desired conformation.

These approaches rely on the concepts of molecular recognition

(specific interaction between two or more molecules) or molecular self-assembly (without external direction).

The bottom-up approach can also be found in nature. For example, biological systems exploit chemical forces to produce cell structures required for life.

Researchers try to imitate this behavior of nature to create clusters of certain atoms that can self-assemble into some useful structures.

One good example of such approaches is the manufacturing of

carbon nanotubes using a metal-catalyzed polymerization technique.

Materials Used For Making NEMS

1. Polydimethylsiloxane is the most used silicon-based organic polymer.

This silicone elastomer is known for its unique properties. It is thermally stable, chemically inert, mechanically configurable,

optically clear, and in general, non-toxic, inert, and non-flammable.

Since it can form a tight seal with silicon, it can be integrated into NEMS, configuring both electrical and mechanical characteristics.

The adhesive forces of polydimethylsiloxane better perform under varying humid environments and possess a lower coefficient of friction compared to silicon.

Polydimethylsiloxane’s low friction coefficient and hydrophobicity make it a perfect material to be incorporated within NEMS research.

It is also gaining attention in NEMS technology due to its time-efficient and inexpensive manufacturing.

2. Carbon-based materials: Carbon allotropes, specifically graphene and carbon nanotube, are widely used in NEMS technology.

While Graphene NEMS can operate as mass and force sensors, the carbon nanotubes NEMS have been widely utilized in nanomotors

(that generate forces on the order of piconewtons), switches, and high-frequency oscillators.

3. Biological machines

Molecular nanotechnology is an emerging field of nanotech that explores the possibility of engineering biological machines,

which could rearrange matter at an atomic scale.

BioNEMS includes biological and synthetic structural elements (of nanoscale size) for biomedical/robotic applications.

APPLICATIONS:

Communications. Due to unique mechanical properties (which enables high-resonance frequencies and high-frequency tunability

NEMS resonators, including graphene resonators provide a promising basis for ultrafast communication systems.

Along with the application and production of GFNs increasing, the risk of unintentional occupational or environmental exposure to GFNs is increasing [26]. And recently, there are some investigation on GFNs exposure in occupational settings and published data showed that the occupational exposure of GFNs had potential toxicity to the workers and researchers [27–29]. GFNs can be delivered into bodies by intratracheal instillation [30], oral administration [31], intravenous injection [32], intraperitoneal injection [33] and subcutaneous injection [34]. GFNs can induce acute and chronic injuries in tissues by penetrating through the blood-air barrier, blood-testis barrier, blood-brain barrier, and blood-placenta barrier etc. and accumulating in the lung, liver, and spleen etc. For example, some graphene nanomaterials aerosols can be inhaled and substantial deposition in the respiratory tract, and they can easily penetrate through the tracheobronchial airways and then transit down to the lower lung airways, resulting in the subsequent formation of granulomas, lung fibrosis and adverse health effects to exposed persons [2, 29]. Several reviews have outlined the unique properties [35, 36] and summarized the latest potential biological applications of GFNs for drug delivery, gene delivery, biosensors, tissue engineering, and neurosurgery [37–39]; assessed the biocompatibility of GFNs in cells (bacterial, mammalian and plant) [7, 40, 41] and animals (mice and zebrafish) [42]; collected information on the influence of GFNs in the soil and water environments [43]. Although these reviews discussed the related safety profiles and nanotoxicology of GFNs, the specific conclusions and detailed mechanisms of toxicity were insufficient, and the mechanisms of toxicity were not summarized completely. The toxicological mechanisms of GFNs demonstrated in recent studies mainly contain inflammatory response, DNA damage, apoptosis, autophagy and necrosis etc., and those mechanisms can be collected to further explore the complex signalling pathways network regulating the toxicity of GFNs.

Large Explosion Rocks Iranian Oil Field Near Iraq Border, Leaving Multiple Dead

Iranian state media is reporting that a severe explosion has rocked an oil field in the western Ilam province which borders Iraq on Tuesday afternoon identified as the Cheshmeh Khosh field.

English language Mehr News cites "reports coming in saying that two people have been killed while another is injured" and featured a photo showing a massive fireball rising above the facility. Bloomberg subsequently cited local reports which updated to "Three oil workers killed and four injured in explosion on pipeline that transfers oil from the Cheshmeh Khosh field."

It's a relatively small field, with official sources estimating an average of 18,000 barrels per day of crude oil production capacity.

Iran's oil producing regions have been known to experience occasional serious accidents and fires, but with the final rounds of nuclear negotiations happening in Vienna, and with Israel being behind past 'sabotage' incidents, naturally there remains the possibility of attack.

The new Tuesday incident comes after yesterday a large mysterious fire was reported outside Tehran.

"A large fire was reported at a warehouse or factory next to a highway near Tehran on Monday afternoon, with the purpose of the warehouse and the background of the incident as of yet unclear," The Jerusalem Post reported.

Comcast Joins Ranks Of ‘Big Brother’, Suspends User’s Internet Service Over Downloaded Content

Censorship is shifting from content to individuals. Comcast made a value judgement over a user’s downloaded files and suspended his service altogether, punishing him by denying access to all Internet content.

This is tantamount to a utility company shutting off a customer’s electricity because they didn’t like their consumption patterns. I have already warned TN readers over government plans to take censorship down to the ISP and hardware levels, where you could be summarily shut out of the Internet altogether. After Comcast suspended a user’s Internet access for downloading copyrighted material, some people are asking whether in the near future similar punishments could be inflicted for accessing ‘offensive content’.

A Comcast Xfinity subscriber was informed that his Internet service had been suspended for 8 hours due to downloading torrents and that it wouldn’t be restored until he contacted the company.

“This alert is to let you know that this month, we again received notifications of alleged copyright infringement associated with your Xfinity account. That means your Internet service may have been used repeatedly to copy or share a movie, show, song, game, or other content without any required permission,” said the email to the customer.

The user was told that further violations would result in another 12 hour suspension and that, “Further notifications may result in your Xfinity Internet account being suspended again or terminated.”

ISP Cox also previously handed out a 6 month suspension against a user after receiving multiple complaints.

“Such terminations have the potential to disrupt everything from distance learning to telework and telemedicine,” reports Torrent Freak.

Indeed, now that things like grocery shopping, banking, housing, government services and other basic life necessities are mainly conducted online (exclusively in some cases), cutting off someone’s Internet access isn’t far removed from cutting off their power or water supply.

And if major ISPs are willing to bow to the entertainment industry by metering out such draconian punishments, what’s to say they won’t do the same when pressured by governments or woke mobs?

“If Comcast is cutting people’s internet off for civil copyright infractions, whose to say they won’t start cutting people off for “hate speech” next?” asks Chris Menahan.
