Florida’s JAXPORT boasts record container volumes in May
May was a record month for container volumes at JAXPORT, the Florida port serving the greater Jacksonville area and beyond. Total container movements rose by 37% year-over-year in May to more than 128,900 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), beating a previous record of 123,700 TEUs set in October 2019.
For its 2021 fiscal year, which runs from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30, container volumes are up by 15% year-to-date to nearly 950,000 TEUs. Of that, JAXPORT’s two largest trade lanes for containers increased by double digits percentage-wise year-to-date. Volumes from Puerto Rico are up by 19% and volumes from Asia are 18% higher. The port also said its automotive volumes are rebounding from supply chain disruptions that occurred as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since October 2020, JAXPORT’s automotive volumes are 15% higher fiscal year-to-date, with the port moving 435,361 autos. This figure puts JAXPORT on pace to surpass 2020 volumes, according to the port.
JAXPORT describes itself as Florida’s largest container port by volume and one of the top vehicle-handling ports in the nation. May’s record container volumes comes as JAXPORT is in the middle of a five-year strategic plan that seeks to expand the port’s capacity to handle more container traffic. These expansion projects include berth enhancements and a federal project that will deepen the Jacksonville shipping channel through Blount Island from 40 feet to 47 feet. That deepening project will finish in 2022. JAXPORT is also planning to spend $72 million in phased yard improvements at Blount Island to allow for more containers there.
These efforts will allow JAXPORT to simultaneously accommodate two post-Panamax ships, the port said. JAXPORT has said it is seeking to grow its offerings for trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic services. “The investments that we’re making in our port facilities ensure that we can continue to provide the efficient service our customers have come to expect from Jacksonville,” said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green in a release. “JAXPORT has developed a reputation in the marketplace for our ability to get vessels in and out of port quickly, a position we are proud to have maintained throughout the supply chain challenges that have impacted our industry over the last 18 months.” In addition to the channel deepening, JAXPORT is also seeking to acquire property surrounding the port for more automotive processing and warehouse space for breakbulk and bulk products, according to its website.
JAXPORT said on Monday that Moody’s Investor Service earlier this month gave the port an A2 credit rating due to the port’s diversity of business, generally stable revenue and “favorable long-term growth outlook for local and regional cargo markets in Florida and the Southeast.”

A magnitude 3.9 earthquake shook up the San Francisco Bay Area on Monday night at 6:29 p.m. local time, in a quake felt across the region. As of Tuesday morning, no injuries or damages have been reported, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.
The U.S. Geological Survey identified San Lorenzo as the earthquake's epicenter, in a shock rated as a 4.2, before being downgraded to 4.0 and ultimately 3.9, the Associated Press reported.
The outlet clarified that Ashland, near San Lorenzo, was initially named as the epicenter, per the geological survey.

U.S. Army leaders say the next war will be fought in mega-cities, but the service has embarked on an ambitious effort to prepare most of its combat brigades to fight, not inside, but beneath them.
Late last year, the Army launched an accelerated effort that funnels some $572 million into training and equipping 26 of its 31 active combat brigades to fight in large-scale subterranean facilities that exist beneath dense urban areas around the world.

Sterling transactions blocked on crypto exchange Binance, users say
Customers of the Binance cryptocurrency exchange said on Tuesday they were unable to deposit or withdraw sterling from the platform, days after British regulators cracked down on some of its activities in the country.
Britain’s financial watchdog last week said Binance, one of the world’s biggest crypto exchanges, cannot conduct any regulated activity and issued a warning to consumers about the platform. Binance said the move would not have any impact on the services offered by its main site, Binance.com, which can still be accessed by UK-based users despite the Financial Conduct Authority’s move. But users said on Twitter that they were unable to withdraw or deposit sterling at the exchange, both via the Faster Payments network or bank cards. A “down for maintenance” message appeared, some said. Others complained that Binance had given no information beyond that.
Faster Payments, which enables mobile, internet and other payments between UK bank accounts, did not respond to emailed questions from Reuters. Binance did not respond to a request for comment. “I tried to withdraw Fiat but it’s blocked and it just says maintenance. Typically when there’s maintenance Binance announce it on their socials etc,” one Twitter user told Reuters on condition of anonymity. “No explanation or anything was given. Frustrating.” Others tagged Binance’s CEO Changpeng Zhao as they complained the problem remained unfixed. “@cz_binance how come you not fixing withdrawals for U.K. Binance users,” asked Peter Englefield, a country DJ in Leeds, northern England.
Binance, which is coming under increasing scrutiny by regulators globally, offers services ranging from digital token trading to derivatives, as well as emerging technology such as tokenised versions of stocks.
Separately, Britain’s Natwest Group has capped the daily amount customers can send to cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance, because of concerns over investment scams and fraud, a spokesperson told Reuters on Tuesday.

SEC Charges JPMorgan Unit Neovest for Operating as Unregistered Broker-Dealer
The Securities and Exchange Commission said it has charged Neovest Inc., a JPMorgan Chase & Co. unit that provides an electronic-trading platform, for operating as an unregistered broker-dealer. The commission on Tuesday said this is the first such charge against a provider of an order and execution management system. It said Neovest agreed to pay $2.75 million in penalty, though the company didn’t admit or deny the SEC’s findings.
The SEC said Neovest agreed to cease and desist from committing violations under a section of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. “Neovest has taken a number of steps to enhance its security measures in recent years and remains a leading broker-neutral electronic trading platform. There is no evidence that client data was compromised in any way,” a JPMorgan Chase spokesman said. Neovest’s platform lets customers route orders for stocks and options to more than 360 brokers, the SEC said. It said Neovest operated as a registered broker-dealer before JPMorgan Chase acquired the company in 2005, but it then continued to operate the order and execution management system even after Neovest withdrew its broker-dealer registration following the acquisition.
Neovest, during the time it didn’t register as a broker-dealer, replicated a database containing customer-authentication information, including user names and passwords, to one of its most active customers and didn’t supervise the customer’s use of the database, according to the SEC. The commission said that by not registering as a broker-dealer, Neovest didn’t offer customers protections such as inspections and examinations by the SEC and the requirement to set policies and procedures to protect customer information.

Joe Biden and Jill Biden will travel to Surfside, Florida, on Thursday to visit the site of a deadly condominium tower collapse.

As of Tuesday, eleven people were confirmed dead and 150 were unaccounted for, according to local officials. The White House previously said Biden would wait to visit Surfside until he was certain that the security and logistics that accompany a presidential visit would not interrupt the search, rescue and recovery efforts underway at the Champlain Towers. Thursday’s visit “is being closely coordinated with officials on the ground, to ensure it does not divert any critical local resources from the search and rescue operations, or have any negative operational impact,” Psaki said. In recent days, evidence has come to light indicating the 40 year-old condominium building showed signs of major structural damage as far back as 2018. Biden supports a federal probe into the cause of the building collapse, Psaki said this week. The federal government wants “to play any constructive role we can play in getting to the bottom of it and preventing it happening in the future,” she added.
On Tuesday, Psaki said the National Institute of Standards and Technology is the agency authorized to conduct federal investigations into building collapses. Six scientists from NIST were on the ground in Surfside Tuesday, she said. Alongside the NIST scientists, teams from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the FBI were also on the scene of the collapse.

France's Macron announces 7 bln euros public funding in healthcare
President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday announced a 7 billion euros ($8.33 billion) public funding plan to invest in healthcare as France aims to improve its health system after the COVID-19 pandemic put hospitals under pressure.
Under the plan, state-owned Banque Publique d’Investissement (BPI) will invest 2 billion euros in start-ups and small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) in the healthcare industry. France will also invest 2 billion euros in research for emerging and infectious diseases, biotherapies and digital health. “We have under-invested in research”, Macron told a conference on healthcare innovation at the Elysee Palace. “Today our system doesn’t work.”
Macron wants to make France the leading European country in healthcare innovation by 2030. He has committed to lift administrative hurdles to speed up organisational changes in the healthcare system.
