Medical ghostwriting - Big pharma is manufacturing medical article behind the scenes for marketing purposes. Medical journals are not what they seem. Peer review is not trustworthy.

What is medical ghostwriting?

Worst-case scenario - pharma does a trial, someone writes the manuscript for the trial, pharma pays the med communication co to approve draft of the manuscript; then marketers approve the manuscript. Then they find suitable authors - honorary. Academics at research centers are paid to put their names on the papers. THIS IS FRAUD.

Medical journals have evolved into medical "laundering" operation. 'Dirty' (ghost written) manuscripts are converted to 'clean' manuscripts. ONLY THEY ARE NOT.

Opinion leaders - Their names end up as the first author on journal articles.

writer - the one who drafted the manuscript (name is eventually dropped)

author - the one who gets credit

Many of the journals have become dependent on Big Pharma money. - They also buy many copies of these journals. So they are conflicted. As a result, they publish a mix of articles. Some of the articles are real, some are fraudulent - but the latter are so well written it's almost impossible to tell the difference now.

Medical journal editors and ghostwriters go to the same conferences. Symbiotic relationship.

VIOXX scandal - problems were known re strokes/heart attacks during the trials. One of the ghostwritten manuscripts downplayed heart attack dangers. One of the lead authors said "i went with the data that Merck gave me."

Adverse events - Ghostwriting helps hide them. You can describe the adverse events in different ways - depending on its CODING, it can be 'hidden'. In one study, they coded suicidal events as 'emotional ability'.

Other ways to manipulate a study -

1. study design

2. conduct of the trial (typically outsourced)

3. reporting of the trial

You can have cheating at every stage.

Last 20-30 years - the risk/benefit ratio is not in favor of the drug.

Big Pharma uses a combo of fear and our trust in pharma to promote drug use.

Role of FDA - industry becomes a client to the regulators - thus no rigorous regulating - and the problem of the revolving door.

COVID 19 "vaxxes" - rushed to market fast

There's every reason to be skeptical. "Is what we've got marketing or science?"

What kind of trust are willing to put in this?

yes, there is definitely a gap between clinical medicine and statistically-based studies. The latter have much higher prestige, deserved or not. But what blew my mind was the degree to which the scientific method has been corrupted. Yes, it had limitations but was at least a useful tool within certain parameters, because of the ethics of those conducting the experiments (and the social pressure from peers to NEVER fudge the data - even if the interpretation might be at issue). But even that is now so far corrupted that there is really is no longer a scientific method upon which to rely.

In the long run, might be an improvement, since one of the key assumptions - independence of conditions - was kinda blown outta the water by quantum physics. Need a new kind of science - quantum science.

Goldman Sachs Reported to U.K. Regulator Over Spanish FX Trades

Europe’s largest wine exporter has filed a complaint against Goldman Sachs Group Inc. with the U.K. financial regulator in the latest round of an escalating fight over currency trades that the Spanish firm says cost it millions of euros.

Lawyers for J. Garcia Carrion SA, whose brands include Pata Negra and Mayor de Castilla, this week sent a report summarizing its case against the bank’s international unit to the Financial Conduct Authority.

The complaint, filed on June 15, alleges that Goldman Sachs International “incited the sale of unauthorized speculative derivatives unconnected to Garcia Carrion’s business, with obscure implicit fees, and without regard to the relevant regulation relating to communicating risks and the volume of the client’s business,” a spokesman for the company said in an emailed statement. The company is already suing the New York-headquartered investment bank in the U.K. over the sale of foreign exchange derivatives, part of a wider case involving allegations that its former finance director entered into unauthorized trades with a range of banks, including BNP Paribas SA and Deutsche Bank AG. Goldman Sachs, which is fighting the claims and has denied any wrongdoing, is itself suing JGC in the U.K in order to recover $6.2 million it says the Spanish firm owes it, according to a court filing. “For years J. Garcia Carrion S.A. profited without complaint from its use of FX derivatives with Goldman Sachs to manage its international currency exposure,” the bank said in a statement. “The company’s refusal to make the payments due under the transactions in 2020 on the basis that these transactions were unknown to it and were beyond its capacity and authority was unjustifiable and left us with no option but to commence legal proceedings to recover the amount owed.”

The widening controversy could roil what has proven to be a lucrative business for investment banks in the region. Questions over Deutsche Bank’s sale of such risky products to Spanish companies has already led to executive departures and an ongoing internal investigation.

Spokespeople for the FCA, Deutsche Bank and BNP Paribas declined to comment.
