Goodbye Elon, Hello Steve Cohen: Point72 To "Get Big" In Crypto

On Wednesday afternoon, the world's 2nd richest man, Elon Musk, infuriated over 21 million bitcoin faithful (that's how many Americans are said to own the cryptocurrency) with his faux ESG concerns when he stunned everyone when he announced that he was shocked, shocked to learn that bitcoin mining uses electricity (just what do you think all those Teslas run on, Elon) and won't accept it any more as payment, bitcoin tumbled as much as 10% overnight, sliding from a high of $55K to as low as $47 before rebounding, dragging the entire cryptocurrency space with it and TSLA stock too.

But with Elon out - and good riddance to that primadona - a far more reputable financial presence appears set to fill his place. The Block Crypto reports that , Steve Cohen's Point72 is set to make a "sizable entrance" into the crypto market, according to several people familiar with the firm's business.

The $17BN+ Point72 is said to be taking a very holistic approach to the $2 trillion crypto market, "investing from both its venture capital arm, Point72 Ventures, and deploying long/short strategies on the hedge fund side." The fund is among several large investment firms currently eyeing the market, and follows in the footsteps of Eric Peters' One River Asset Management which last December became one of the first major institutions to announce a major allocation to bitcoin, when it revealed it had invested $600MM in bitcoin and ether, an investment that has returned multiples since then.

As for Point72, the firm is poised to "get big in crypto," according to one source who spoke with Cohen. Another source corroborated that view, noting the firm is trying to bring on the right talent.

Another hedge fund, Izzy Englander's $50BN multi-strat, pod-based Millennium, has been dabbling in the crypto market via exposure from Grayscale's Bitcoin Trust, according to TheStreet. We also reported previously that Ray Dalio's Bridgewater, the world's biggest hedge fund, has also warmed up to the market, although it has yet to unveil its allocation into crypto on behalf of its clients.

Point72 recently raised $1.5 billion after suffering losses from its stake in Melvin Capital, which found itself on the losing end of the surge in GameStop. At the time, Business Insider reported the new capital would help the firm "take advantage of new opportunities in the market."

Colonial Pipeline paid hackers nearly US$5M in ransom

Colonial Pipeline Co. paid nearly $5 million to Eastern European hackers on Friday, contradicting reports earlier this week that the company had no intention of paying an extortion fee to help restore the country’s largest fuel pipeline, according to two people familiar with the transaction. The company paid the hefty ransom in untraceable cryptocurrency within hours after the attack, underscoring the immense pressure faced by the Georgia-based operator to get gasoline and jet fuel flowing again to major cities along the Eastern Seaboard, those people said.Once they received the payment, the hackers provided the operator with a decrypting tool to restore its disabled computer network. The tool was so slow that the company continued using its own backups to help restore the system, one of the people familiar with the company’s efforts said.

A representative from Colonial declined to comment.

The hackers, which the FBI said are linked to a group called DarkSide, specialize in digital extortion and are believed to be located in Russia or Eastern Europe.On Wednesday, media outlets including the Washington Post and Reuters reported that the company had no immediate intention of paying the ransom. Those reports were based on anonymous sources.

Ransomware is a type of malware that locks up a victim’s files, which the attackers promise to unlock for a payment. More recently, some ransomware groups have also stolen victims’ data and threatened to release it unless paid -- a kind of double extortion.

The FBI discourages organizations from paying ransom to hackers, saying there is no guarantee they will follow through on promises to unlock files. It also provides incentive to other would-be hackers, the agency says. Such guidance provides a quandary for victims who have to weigh the risks of not paying with the costs of lost or exposed records.

A report released last month by a ransomware task force said the amount paid by ransomware victims increased by 311% in 2020, reaching about $350 million in cryptocurrency. The average ransom paid by organizations in 2020 was $312,493, according to report.

Colonial, which operates the largest fuel pipeline in the U.S., became aware of the hack around May 7 and shut down its operations, which led to fuel shortages and lines at gas stations along the East Coast.

Myanmar coup latest: Junta sells off scarce dollars as kyat crashes

10:15 p.m. Even as Japanese journalist Yuki Kitazumi is set to be released from detention, another local reporter faces imprisonment. A Myanmar court has sentenced Min Nyo, a reporter of independent broadcaster Democratic Voice of Burma, to three years in prison, Kyodo reports, citing his employer. Min Nyo was arrested on March 3 while covering an anti-coup demonstration in the central Bago region and was charged with inciting social unrest, Kyodo reports.

9:00 p.m. Myanmar authorities will drop the charges against detained Japanese reporter Yuki Kitazumi, who was arrested last month on suspicion of spreading false information, state television reports. State TV says that while Kitazumi "violated laws," he will be released in light of the friendship between Myanmar and Japan and the interest of their future relations. Kitazumi's release follows a request made by a special envoy of Japan for national reconciliation in Myanmar, the broadcaster says. Ric Grenell, who served as acting director of National Intelligence in the Trump administration, is blasting Susan Rice and says she is acting as a “shadow president.”

His comments came during an interview on CPAC Now. An excerpt of the interview was posted on Twitter by the Conservative Political Action conference.

“Susan Rice has been appointed as domestic policy adviser,” he said. “ That’s a joke. She doesn’t know anything about domestic policy.

“So, she’s a foreign policy expert that’s been placed in the domestic policy role. And that is just a clear signal that all of our international issues, our foreign policies, are going to be treated like domestic policy.

“This is a problem for the Democratic Party. The foreign policy mess that they are creating is a mess because they are placating the far-left domestically. It’s part of that cancel culture.

“They’re beating up on Israel because it pleases the far-left. They are trying to reach out to Iran and pretend like the Iranian regime should be respected because it pleases the far progressive left. This is the upsidedown world of the Biden administration. President (Joe) Biden is too weak to stop the progressive left from taking over the domestic and foreign policy. (Vice President) Kamala (Harris) does not understand what’s going on…

Rice is the former national security adviser for President Barack Obama. At one point she had emerged as a serious contender for consideration for Biden’s running mate in 2020.

Rice has faced criticism over her role in the failed Benghazi response that left four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador, dead.

She was also implicated in the unmasking of Americans in intelligence reports during the presidential transition. Some of those Americans turned out to be Donald Trump associates. Rice has denied any wrongdoing.

Grenell was interviewed for CPAC Now by Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union, and by Mercedes Schlapp, his wife and former White House director of strategic communications for the Trump administration, Fox News noted.

The White House did not immediately respond to an email from Fox News. Grenell had previously predicted Rice would assume the role as “shadow president.”

“We got a vice president who needs to spend most of her time in the Senate because it’s a 50-50 type. So Susan Rice is extremely excited that vice president Harris is preoccupied in the Senate and the shadow presidency of Susan Rice is front and center,” he said shortly after Biden was sworn in.

Many universities and other schools are requiring that students must be vaccinated for COVID-19 before they are allowed to return to campus. This is not only blatant discrimination but it also forces students to waive their rights to informed consent, which is flatly illegal. ⁃ TN Editor

Dear Deans, Governing Boards and Trustees,

On behalf of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, I am writing to ask you to reconsider your new policy mandating COVID-19 vaccination of students prior to returning to campus. Institutions of higher learning are divided on this issue, although, at first glance, the policy may seem prudent, it coerces students into bearing unneeded and unknown risk and is at heart contrary to the bedrock medical principle of informed consent.

There are multiple reasons to reverse your policy. I ask you to consider the following:

Young adults are a healthy and immunologically competent and vibrant group that is at “extraordinary low risk for COVID-19 morbidity and mortality.”

College and University students, however, are under significant mental health strain already from COVID-19 fears, circumstances, distance learning problems and the imposition of government health policy restrictions.

Even though the FDA granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for three COVID-19 vaccines, they are not FDA approved to treat, cure or prevent any disease at this time. Clinical trials will continue for at least two years before the FDA can even consider approval of these vaccines as effective and safe.

The COVID-19 vaccines on the market in the U.S., mRNA (Moderna and Pfizer) and DNA (Johnson & Johnson – Janssen), have caused notable side effects, pathology and even death (4.178 deaths per VAERS as of May 5, 2021). These adverse reactions result in absence from school and work, hospital visits, and even loss of life.

College-age women may be at unique risk for adverse events following administration of the experimental COVID vaccinations currently available. According to the CDC, all cases of life-threatening blood clots, subsequent to receiving the J&J vaccine, reported so far in the United States, occurred in younger women. The vast majority of cases of anaphylaxis have also occurred in women. In addition, “women are reporting having irregular menstrual cycles after getting the coronavirus vaccine,” and 95 miscarriages have been reported to the U.S. Vaccine Adverse Effects Reporting System (VAERS) following COVID vaccination as of April 24, 2021.

Recent research data demonstrates that the spike protein, present on the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the induced primary mechanism of action of COVID-19 vaccines, are the primary cause of disease, infirmity, hospitalization and death.

Please reverse your decision to mandate experimental COVID-19 vaccines before more students are harmed and make the vaccines rightfully optional. Both unvaccinated and vaccinated students should be permitted on campus. Thank you for your time and attention. We would appreciate hearing back from you as soon as possible and welcome further discussion with you and other leaders at your institution.

US withdraws 120 military personnel from Israel as violence continues

The US has withdrawn approximately 120 military and civilian personnel from Israel, who were in the country to plan upcoming exercises, according to a report.

Citing a Department of Defence official, CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr says that the group left on a C-17 aircraft to return to a base in Germany.

The continuing violence and lack of commercial air travel options were given as reasons to leave early on military transport.

This morning, the C-17 was recorded landing in Tel Aviv from Ramstein US Air Force Base in southwestern Germany.

Due to the escalation of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, many flights have been redirected from Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv to Ramon Airport, which is near the Red Sea resort Eilat.

The airport says it is operating after a brief halt when Hamas fired a rocket that missed the airfield but landed in the area.

United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines have cancelled flights between the United States and Tel Aviv, according to data by flight tracker FlightAware.

As airstrikes continue on Gaza, and dozens of rockets are fired by Hamas militants back into Israel, the death toll is mounting, with seven dead in Israel and 87 killed in Gaza, including 18 children.

The Israeli military is reportedly set to approve plans for a possible ground invasion of Gaza, with additional troops, including infantry and armoured brigades, already in position on the border of the Palestinian territory.

Senator Rand Paul: “Dr. Fauci Could be Culpable for the Entire Pandemic”

On Tuesday the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee held a hearing on the efforts to combat COVID-19.

As Cristina reported earlier, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) ripped into Dr. Fauci about funding the Wuhan laboratory in Wuhan, China.

In May 2020, TGP reported this: The leader of the US task force overseeing the country’s response to the China coronavirus, Dr. Tony Fauci, was the one who funded the Wuhan bat virus work and kept it going.

Since May 2020, The Gateway Pundit has been reporting on Dr. Anthony Fauci’s likely illegal funding of coronavirus projects at the Wuhan Virology Center.

It is clear that they successfully isolated the coronavirus in the lab and were actively experimenting with species-to-species transmission.

Rand Paul confronted Fauci on Tuesday: “Dr. Fauci, do you still support funding of the NIH funding of the lab in Wuhan?”

Arrogant Fauci shot back at the Kentucky lawmaker: “Senator Paul, with all due respect, you are entirely and completely incorrect that the NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain of function research in the Wuhan institute.”
