Morgan Stanley profit surges, flags nearly $1 billion Archegos loss
Morgan Stanley reported a 150% jump in first-quarter profit on Friday that sailed past Wall Street expectations, while disclosing an almost $1 billion loss from the collapse of private fund Archegos. The Wall Street powerhouse said in a statement that the one-off losses were related to a credit event and subsequent losses from “a single prime brokerage client” that it identified as Archegos on a call with analysts.
Morgan Stanley was one of six banks that had exposure to Archegos Capital Management, a family office fund that defaulted on margin calls late last month and triggered a firesale of stocks across Wall Street.
The bank also reminded investors that it had resumed its share buyback program in 1Q of 2021, and repurchased $2.1BN outstanding stock. As with Goldman and JPM, equities revenue reflected “notable strength in derivatives, driven by continued client engagement and elevated volumes,” the bank said, but also included a “loss of $644 million related to a credit event for a single prime brokerage client, and $267 million of subsequent trading losses through the end of the quarter related to the same event.”

A group in Arizona is recruiting volunteers from all quarters of the voter spectrum to observe a complete hand audit of every vote cast in Maricopa County in the November 2020 election. The Arizona Senate is having the audit conducted by an outside party; what the group in Arizona is doing is enlisting observers from among the interested voting and partisan groups in the state.
There was a previous audit by the county of equipment used in the November election, but it was not an audit of ballots. Its sole charter was to audit the performance of equipment. Generic implications that the vote itself has been forensically audited already — frequently conveyed by vague language in news reporting — are incorrect.
There is no legitimate reason to insist that the full audit of ballots not be done. The shrieking demon chorus is out in force on social media claiming that performing an audit is the same thing as falsely alleging election fraud. It’s not, of course. No audit is, per se, an allegation of fraud. What every audit is, per se, is a measure to police potential fraud and ensure against it.
It can justly be said that only cheaters are relentlessly determined to prevent such ordinary and sensible measures.

China opens its borders to multi-billion dollar gold imports
China has given domestic and international banks permission to import large amounts of gold into the country, five sources familiar with the matter said, potentially helping to support gold prices after a months-long decline.
China is the world's biggest gold consumer, gobbling up hundreds of tonnes worth tens of billions of dollars each year, but its imports plunged as the coronavirus spread and local demand dried up.
With China's economy rebounding strongly since the second half of last year, its appetite for gold jewellery, bars and coins has also recovered, and since January domestic prices have been higher than global benchmark rates, making it profitable to import bullion. GOL/AS
The People's Bank of China (PBOC), the nation's central bank, controls how much gold enters China through a system of quotas given to commercial banks. It usually allows enough metal in to satisfy local demand but sometimes restricts the flow. In recent weeks it has given permission for large amounts of bullion to enter, the sources said.
"We had no quotas for a while. Now we are getting them ... the most since 2019," said a source at one of the banks moving gold into China. Around 150 tonnes of gold worth $8.5 billion at current prices is likely to be shipped, four sources said. Two of the sources said the bullion would be shipped in April. Two others said it would reach China over April and May.
The bulk of China's gold imports typically come from Australia, South Africa and Switzerland. The size of the shipments signals China's dramatic return to the global bullion market. Since February 2020, the country has on average imported gold worth around $600 million a month, or roughly 10 tonnes, Chinese customs data show.
In 2019 its imports ran at about $3.5 billion a month, or roughly 75 tonnes.
The People's Bank of China did not respond to a request for comment.
China's absence made little difference to gold prices early in the pandemic when Western investors fearful of economic catastrophe stockpiled vast amounts of bullion traditionally seen as a safe asset pushing it to a record high of $2,072.50 an ounce.

Bitcoin falls as Turkey bans cryptocurrency payments
Bitcoin fell early on Friday, after Turkey’s central bank decided to ban the use of cryptocurrencies for payments from the end of the month.
The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) cited a number of reasons for the ban, including a lack of “supervision mechanisms” and “central authority regulation” for crypto assets. It said that market values can be “excessively volatile,” adding that digital wallets can be stolen or used unlawfully and that transactions were irrevocable. Turkey isn’t the only country looking to take tough measures on digital assets. India is reportedly set to propose a law banning cryptocurrencies and making trading or even holding assets punishable with a fine. Foreign selling in Treasuries in February hits highest since December 2018
Foreign outflows in Treasuries hit their highest in more than two years in February, according to data from the U.S. Treasury released on Thursday, as investors sold government debt on expectations that yields would go higher as the economy emerged from the pandemic. On a transaction basis, foreign investors sold $65.46 billion in Treasuries in the month, the largest outflow since December 2018, compared with outflows of $49.13 billion the previous month. Investors have sold Treasuries in nine of the last 12 months.
Foreign holdings of Treasuries overall declined to $7.098 trillion in February, from $7.119 trillion the previous month. In January, foreign ownership of Treasuries gained the most in six months. Japan led the slide in foreign holdings in February, with $1.258 trillion, from $1.276 trillion in January, which, analysts said, may have been related to the country’s March fiscal year-end. Japanese investors tend to sell U.S. assets and repatriate those proceeds back to their home country for balance sheet purposes, with the approaching fiscal-year end. Japan remains the largest non-U.S. holder of U.S. government debt.
China, on the other hand, raised its holdings of U.S. government debt, with $1.1 trillion, from $1.09 trillion in January. Data also showed foreign investors bought $13.99 billion in U.S. equities in February, from $11.868 billion in January. Foreigners have purchased U.S. stocks for 10 straight months. U.S. corporate bonds had a net inflow of $14.49 billion, from $18.87 billion in January.
Overall, net foreign acquisitions of U.S. long-term and short-term securities, as well as banking flows, amounted to a net inflow of $72.6 billion in February, from a revised $105.8 billion in January.

The International Monetary Fund won’t hand over $5 billion of special drawing rights (SDR) to Venezuela to bolster its reserves as part of a massive injection of resources to member nations, due to an ongoing dispute over whether President Nicolas Maduro is the legitimate leader of the country.
Venezuela in theory would be among the biggest recipients in terms of percentage of gross domestic product of a proposed $650 billion in special drawing rights that the IMF is planning to give countries to boost global liquidity. This is part of an effort to help emerging and low-income nations deal with mounting debt and Covid-19. Some Republicans in Congress, including Senators Pat Toomey and John Kennedy, have urged U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to oppose the creation of the reserves, saying they would reward Maduro, among other U.S. adversaries. But Venezuela won’t be able to access the assets, which most nations will receive via a transfer to their central banks if they are approved as expected by the Fund’s board of governors in the coming months, according to the IMF. That’s because the U.S. and more than 50 other countries regard opposition leader Juan Guaido as the nation’s legitimate leader, following sham presidential elections in 2018. “The ongoing political crisis in Venezuela has led to a lack of clarity in the international community as reflected in the IMF’s membership regarding official government recognition,” IMF spokesman Gerry Rice said in reply to questions from Bloomberg News. Venezuela isn’t able to access its existing SDR holdings and won’t be able to use new ones “until a government is recognized,” Rice said.
The decision is the latest setback for Maduro’s regime, which has been largely cut off from a global financial network due to U.S. sanctions. After seven years of economic contraction following a collapse in global oil prices, the IMF’s handout of $5.1 billion would have been equivalent to 81% of the nation’s existing international reserves. Maduro administration officials are considering whether to invite IMF officials to inspect the government’s economic data a step known as an Article IV evaluation in an effort to mend the relationship following a 14-year data blackout that left most economists guessing the depths of the nation’s monumental collapse, according to three people with knowledge of the matter. Yet, because the Maduro government is barred from having contact, discussions or access to financing from the IMF until it’s recognized as the official government, that Article IV evaluation can’t presently take place. Press officials for Venezuela’s presidency did not respond to requests for comment.
While the IMF suspended Venezuela’s access to SDRs in 2019 citing political chaos, the relationship between the two has long been contentious. In 2007, late President Hugo Chavez pledged to cut ties with the Washington organization, contending that the Fund merely served U.S. interests. “This is the kind of initiative that a country like Venezuela could really take advantage of in the face of the ongoing crisis,” said Temir Porras, a former senior economic aide to Chavez and Maduro. “It’s time for a more pragmatic approach, not just to immediately attend to urgent health needs, but to contribute to the stabilization of our economy.”
Venezuela SDR holdings had fallen more than 99% from their allocated level as of last month, down to just $12.5 million from $3.6 billion in 2009, when it was a recipient of reserves during the global financial crisis, according to IMF data. More than two-thirds of Venezuela’s foreign reserves are in the form of gold, which has been difficult to sell because of U.S. sanctions.

U.S. stops short of declaring Vietnam, Switzerland, Taiwan currency manipulators
The U.S. Treasury Department on Friday said Vietnam, Switzerland and Taiwan tripped its thresholds for possible currency manipulation under a 2015 U.S. trade law, but refrained from formally branding them as manipulators under a separate law. Switzerland rejected Treasury’s assessment and denied that it engaged in any form of currency manipulation.
An official with Taiwan’s central bank said the U.S. decision showed that there was continued good communication between Taipei and Washington on the issue and that U.S. authorities understood Taiwan’s “special situation.” No immediate reaction was available from Vietnam.
Treasury said no other major U.S. trading partner met the relevant 1988 or 2015 legislative criteria for currency manipulation or enhanced analysis during the review period.
Treasury urged China to improve transparency regarding its foreign exchange intervention activities, the policy objectives of its exchange rate management regime, the relationship between the central bank and foreign exchange activities of the state-owned banks, and its activities in the offshore yuan market.
Treasury said it found that 11 economies warrant placement on Treasury’s “Monitoring List” of major trading partners that merit close attention to their currency practices: China, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Ireland, Italy, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Mexico. All except Ireland and Mexico were included in the December 2020 report to Congress.
Reaction in the foreign exchange market was muted, with the Swiss franc modestly stronger and the Mexican peso only slightly weaker.

Russia will ask 10 U.S. diplomats to leave the country in retaliation for Washington's expulsion of the same number of Russian diplomats over alleged malign activity, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday. The U.S. government on Thursday imposed a broad array of sanctions on Russia, including curbs to its sovereign debt market, to punish it for interfering in last year's U.S. election, cyber hacking, bullying Ukraine and other alleged malign actions. On Friday, Lavrov, speaking at a news conference with his Serbian counterpart, laid out Russia's response.
Apart from expelling 10 U.S. diplomats, he said Moscow would place eight U.S. officials on a sanctions list and end the activity in Russia of U.S. funds and NGOs which it believes interfere in the country's internal affairs. He said Russia was also considering possible "painful" measures aimed at U.S. business in Russia.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had earlier on Friday called the U.S. sanctions unacceptable, even as it left the door open to dialogue. U.S. President Joe Biden, after imposing the sanctions on Moscow, had called for a de-escalation in tensions and said it was vital the White House and Kremlin kept communication lines open. Biden has proposed that he and Putin meet for a summit.
"(Putin) has repeatedly said we're ready to develop dialogue as much as our counterparts are ready to do so. In this sense it is probably positive that the views of the two heads of state coincide," Peskov told reporters before the Russian counter sanctions were unveiled. "Their views categorically do not coincide when it comes to creating mutually beneficial relations and taking each other's interests into account," Peskov added however.
Fears of U.S. sanctions had caused volatility on Russian markets for weeks and prompted the rouble to fall sharply. The national currency recovered much of that ground though as it became clear the sanctions had stopped short of crippling measures that would ban U.S. banks from holding Russian debt.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a statewide stay-at-home order on April 1 last year locking down the Sunshine State for 30 days amid a global panic about the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus outbreak. Sitting in his office exactly a year later, he told The Epoch Times that the lockdowns were a “huge mistake,” including in his own state.
“We wanted to mitigate the damage. Now, in hindsight, the 15 days to slow the spread and the 30—it didn’t work,” DeSantis said. “We shouldn’t have gone down that road.”
Florida’s lockdown order was notably less strict than some of the stay-at-home measures imposed in other states. Recreational activities like walking, biking, golf, and beachgoing were exempted while essential businesses were broadly defined.
“Our economy kept going,” DeSantis said. “It was much different than what you saw in some of those lockdown states.”
The governor nonetheless now regrets issuing the order at all and is convinced that states that have carried on with lockdowns are perpetuating a destructive blunder.
After the 30 days of the initial lockdown in Florida lapsed, DeSantis commenced a phased reopening. He faced fierce criticism at each stage from establishment media and his own constituents beholden to the lockdown narrative.
The governor fully reopened Florida on Sept. 25 last year. When cases began to rise as part of the winter surge he did not reimpose any restrictions. Lockdown proponents forecast doom and gloom. DeSantis stood his ground…..

The Biden administration is still seizing land along the U.S. southern border for Donald Trump’s border wall despite announcing that he was not going to finish it.
The administration insists they’re in the midst of a “review of federal resources to build the wall” and are allowing Trump-era court cases to proceed, including land seizure cases. That review was supposed to be concluded 60 days after Biden’s inauguration — March 20. The president made the announcement of the wall cancellation with great fanfare and publicity. And yet land has continued to be seized.
“I’m … very, very disappointed in Joe Biden. I thought he was a man of his word but apparently, he’s not keeping his word,” Reynaldo “Rey” Anzaldua Cavazos, a member of the family whose land was taken, told Politico. “He said not one more foot of wall and no land forfeitures. We took him at his word and we want him to keep his word.”
Despite Biden’s promise to quickly reverse Trump’s immigration policies, he has yet to act on many of them — from failing to increase the cap on refugees to rescinding a ban on most migrants at the southern border. But fewer issues carry as much symbolic weight as the border wall. And his actions there threaten to further complicate his pledge to offer a kinder, gentler immigration system where everyone is welcome.
“They can have all the excuses they want but it’s real dicey to look at what they’re doing right now,” said a person who consults with the White House on immigration policy who has grown frustrated. “It’s a lot of stuff Trump was doing.”

White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Friday defended United Nations Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield amid criticism over comments that the American founding documents are "weaved" with White supremacy.
Greenfield made the comments in question at a speech for the liberal National Action Network's 2021 virtual convention, as she addressed the U.S. effort to rejoin the controversial U.N. Human Rights Council. She said the U.S. needs to approach "issues of equity and justice" internationally "with humility" because of past American moral struggles.
"We have to acknowledge that we are an imperfect union and have been since the beginning," she said. "I’ve seen for myself how the original sin of slavery weaved White supremacy into our founding documents and principles."
Psaki was asked about Greenfield's comments Friday and any resemblance to moral attacks against the United States by Chinese diplomats last month in a meeting with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and others in Alaska.

Cache of docs set to be unsealed in Ghislaine Maxwell case

A cache of sealed documents prepared by Manhattan federal prosecutors in the Ghislaine Maxwell sex-trafficking case is set to be released Friday afternoon, a judge said in court papers.
Maxwell’s lawyers and prosecutors had been arguing over what material in the documents should remain confidential — which has kept the documents under seal since they were filed in February.
In her order, Judge Nathan said some of the proposed redactions fought for by the Maxwell team were “unnecessary and overbroad,” as they are already included in public court files.
“The Government is therefore ORDERED to docket its omnibus memorandum of law, along with the corresponding exhibits, by 3:00 p.m. today, consistent with the Court’s orders regarding redactions,”
