Brazil's Supreme Court agrees Lula convictions are void

With the corruption convictions thrown out on a legal technicality, the former president could take on current leader Bolsonaro in elections next year.

Brazil's Supreme Court confirmed a decision to annul criminal convictions against former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The decision came after Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin determined in early March that the lower federal court where Lula was tried lacked jurisdiction — overturning the conviction.

A total of eight justices voted to uphold Fachin's decision on Thursday, while three voted against.

The 75-year-old politician, who governed Brazil between 2003 and 2011, was convicted as part of a far-reaching corruption probe known as Operation Car Wash. In 2017, he was convicted for bribery after accepting a seaside apartment from a construction company in exchange for lucrative government contracts. The following year, another court found him guilty of corruption and he was sentenced to a total of 26 years on charges of taking bribes.

Lula spent a year and a half behind bars until the Supreme Court ruled he and others could appeal their cases without serving time. The former Brazilian president and his supporters maintain that the anti-corruption probe was politically motivated. Lula has not been acquitted as the convictions were overturned on procedural grounds. The judges could still decide to refer the cases against Lula to the federal courts in Brasilia or Sao Paulo.

But with no convictions currently, Lula is now eligible to run once again. He is a favorite among opponents of current President Jair Bolsonaro to take on the right-wing leader in 2022 on behalf of the left-wing Workers' Party that governed Brazil from 2003 to 2016. Lula is probably the party's most prominent politician; he served two terms as president and had run for the job three more times prior to that.

Early polls suggest that a race between him and Bolsonaro would be tight.

Beijing Pursuing ‘Offensive Decoupling’ Against West: Former Senior Official

While the Trump administration drew fire for propelling economic decoupling with the Chinese regime, it is in fact Beijing that is pursuing a campaign of “offensive decoupling” against the world, according to former deputy national security advisor Matthew Pottinger.

“Beijing intends to decrease China’s dependency on the world while making the world increasingly dependent on China—and then use the resulting leverage to advance Beijing’s authoritarian political aims around the globe,” Pottinger, who served under the Trump administration, said at an April 15 hearing of U.S. Congress’s U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.

Decoupling has been the Chinese regime’s strategy ever since they joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, Pottinger said, but this plan of “offensive decoupling” was made “very explicit” in the Chinese regime’s latest economic blueprint, approved in March, for the next five years.

“Beijing does want to decouple, but the purely on its terms,” he said. This tactic has been played out through the Chinese regime’s economic coercion of Australia—which currently exports more than a third of its goods to China—in response to Australia last year calling for an independent investigation into the origins of the pandemic. Since then, Beijing has slapped import restrictions on a range of Australian goods including beef, coal, barley, and wine.

The kind of decoupling that the regime does not want is the one that cuts off its access to advanced technology from the United States and other Western countries.

“They still want to have access to our technology, they want to have access to our laboratories and our intellectual property,” Pottinger said.

“The thing that scares them, that gives them night sweats, is the fear that at some point, we might pull the plug on their ability to gain so much access to our cutting edge technology.”

To counter the Chinese regime’s aggressions, the United States should do more to cut off the flow of American capital into Beijing’s military-industrial complex.

A recent analysis by the Commerce Department based on publicly available data shows that U.S. public and private equity investments in Chinese- and Hong Kong-domiciled companies from 1992 through the end of 2020 totaled $2.3 trillion in market value.

“Somehow, Wall Street missed the memo that Beijing is waging an existential fight whose objective is ‘the eventual demise of capitalism and the ultimate victory of socialism,’ to quote Chairman Xi,” Pottinger said.

Then-President Donald Trump in late 2020 issued an executive order banning U.S. investments into a Pentagon list of Chinese companies owned or controlled by the regime’s military. Pottinger recommended the order be codified into law by Congress and for the list to be expanded to include Chinese companies that are on the Commerce Department’s “entity list.” Dozens of Chinese entities have been added to this trade blacklist over national security or human rights concerns.

didn't get a computer yet.

all 3 of mine went down at the same time, each with something different. got the tiny one w/no software working, but screen is way too small, i'm not 25 anymore.....

found a guy to work on main one (desktop) starting Sunday, ordered a laptop (since that also gave out), but had a hard time getting what i wanted, u don't wanna hear the details (jus like i don need to hear real estate stuff, right? haha)

i can do a little here but eyestrain is too much to spend a lot of time on this machine - can only make caps in Paint.

just followed twitter tonite, most new comes thru there

usually on weekends, i do a lot of extra stuff which is fine, this weekend won't be able to do that. Figured we'd just do mebbe a bread a day on sat and sun, won't hurt, it's still good. can cover nights sat and sun, just can't do a lot of

note gathering, etc.

i'll get a new computer on monday (prolly late in the day). even wo/software can do a lot more than on this baby machine.

we doing good work here and i think we'll pick up some more support gradually but no need to burn out meanwhile.

eyestrain went down dramatically when i got a 32" monitor.

tiny keyboard isn't too bad but 10in monitor is - haha - just about impossible. get eyestrain just about immediately. speaking of which, think i'll get off.

hope tthings are going well with the 'island paradise' paperwork. pain in the neck but worth it if u got the right situ. i'm grateful for the good things in muh life, got what i need to get thru.

if i was ever insufficiently grateful for my desktop, any trace of ingratitude is now gone. looking forward to get everything put back together.
