House Will Vote on Whether to Make Washington D.C. a State Tuesday

The House of Representatives will vote Tuesday on whether to make Washington, D.C., a State.

The House Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), voted the bill, H.R. 51, out of committee by a vote of 25-19 to create D.C. statehood Wednesday.

The ultimate argument seems to be whether the 23rd Amendment guarantees the federal Capitol at least three electors in presidential elections, Rep. Any Biggs (R-AZ) suggested Wednesday.

Biggs’ view is supported by legal scholars, who opposed D.C. statehood’s feasibility without a Constitutional amendment to the 23rd Amendment. The Office of Legal Counsel in 2007 believed it was unconstitutional, the Justice Department under former President Reagan and former President Carter stated the transformation was unconstitutional, and so did Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, when he sat on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Additionally, twenty-two state Attorneys General sent a letter Tuesday to President Joe Biden and Congress arguing Washington, D.C., cannot transition into a state via legislation, but only through the method of a Constitutional amendment.

Opposition to D.C. statehood is argued on three classical points:

Our nation’s capital was always meant to be unique. The founders wanted it to be a federal district, existing beyond the confines or influence of any one state.

H.R. 51 would require Congress to ignore the plain command of the 23rd Amendment.

Even those who support D.C. statehood admit district residents enjoy special benefits due to where they live and would enjoy an outsize influence in Congress.

The legislation is among those radical proposals the Democrats introduced in Biden’s first 100 days include: packing the courts, amnesty, reparations, federalized elections, D.C. statehood, and banning the Electoral College.

The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced that Joel R. Levin, the Director of its Chicago Regional Office, will leave the agency at the end of May.

Mr. Levin has served as Director of the Chicago office since May 2018, overseeing the agency’s second-largest regional office of more than 260 attorneys, accountants, investigators, securities compliance examiners and other personnel involved in the investigation and prosecution of enforcement actions and the performance of compliance examinations. The nine-state region overseen by the Chicago office is home to roughly 20 percent of the nation’s population, and exercises jurisdiction over more than 2,000 investment advisers and investment companies with over $10 trillion in assets under management, and over 500 broker-dealers with more than 35,000 branch offices.

“Throughout his tenure, Joel has demonstrated an abiding commitment to every aspect of the work of the Chicago Regional Office, including examining registrants, holding wrongdoers accountable, and educating the investing public. Joel can be very proud of all that our Chicago office staff has accomplished on behalf of investors under his strong leadership,” said SEC Acting Chair Allison Herren Lee.

Texas Congressman Unveils Bill to Designate Certain Mexican Cartels as Terrorist Organizations

Texas Congressman Chip Roy (R) is expected to file a bill that would designate the most violent cartels in Mexico as foreign terrorist organizations. The bill comes amid Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s similar requests for the designations.

The bill would focus on the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas and the Metros faction of the Gulf Cartel; the two main criminal organizations linked to the current immigration surge at the Texas border. In 2019 Roy also called for a similar measure asking the U.S. Department of State to designate certain cartels. The changes would allow for more asset freezes and apply diplomatic pressure on Mexico City to crack down on the organizations.

According to a series of exclusive interviews with Roy during a series of border trips, the Gulf Cartel and the CDN faction of Los Zetas have profited from the current border crisis while kidnapping, extorting. and abusing migrants.

Both the Zetas and the Gulf Cartel are linked to mass graves and clandestine incineration sites in Mexico.

Hospitals In Cuomo’s State Denied Lifesaving Drug To People Dying Of COVID After It Showed Amazing Promise

Courts in New York had to step in to order hospitals to administer a drug that likely saved the life of people dying of complications from COVID-19.

The drug called Ivermectin, a commonly used drug to treat parasitic infections, has been shown in 50 studies, 26 of them randomized controlled trials, to have an incredibly high rate of success in treating COVID and its inflammatory response in the immune system at all stages of the virus with no side effects.

John Swanson, 81, of Genesee County, New York, like so many elderly Americans, was given no legitimate preventive or early treatment options for this now very predictable inflammatory response to COVID-19. He wound up on a ventilator at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia and, according to the court affidavit, was “on death’s doorstep.” The Buffalo News reports that, according to attorney Ralph C. Lorigo, Swanson was given one dose of ivermectin and began breathing on his own, was then taken off the ventilator, and began to show great progress. However, the hospital, with no other legitimate treatment options to offer, refused to give him follow-up doses.

On April 2, state Supreme Court Justice Frederick J. Marshall ordered the hospital to administer the follow-up doses at the request of Swanson’s wife.

As of late Friday afternoon, his attorneys described Swanson as “stable.”

“I definitely think the Ivermectin is helping him,” Sandra Swanson told The Buffalo News, but she said she is upset and frustrated that hospital officials would not allow her to visit with her husband.

“They held the phone to his ear, and I read him a long list of people who are praying for him every day, about 20 people,” she said. “But I need to see him.”

There have been at least two other instances where New York judges had to force local hospitals to administer lifesaving treatment to those who appeared on their way to death.

It is shocking how 13 months into this pandemic, the medical profession has nothing to offer but a ventilator, keeping loved ones away from seeing the patient, and blocking the only known lifesaving treatments.

What is even more bewildering is the fact that the World Health Organization’s own data show that early-use ivermectin is even more effective, reducing mortality by 81%. Were every vulnerable person to use it preventively, one can only speculate that the results would be even better, because the key to fighting the inflammatory response is to pre-empt it from getting off the ground.

Florida Legislature passes ‘anti-riot’ bill

The GOP-controlled Florida Senate on Thursday passed a controversial “anti-riot” bill, sending it to the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who began advocating for the bill last year following the unrest that hit many U.S. cities last summer over the deaths of Black people at the hands of police.

The legislation—H.B. 1—would strengthen and create new penalties for crimes committed during a “riot” or violent protest. It would also punish local governments that interfere with law enforcement’s efforts to control riots and establish a citizen’s appeal process when cities and counties attempt to reduce police budgets in response to riots.

This measure was passed the same week as a new wave of Black Lives Matter protests have hit a Minneapolis suburb after a recent high-profile killing of a Black man, Daunte Wright, by police. These protests have seen some violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement, as well as destruction of property.

While the bill’s supporters have argued this bill is about “law and order,” opponents have charged that H.B. 1 restricts the freedoms of speech and peaceful assembly and that it’s meant to attack the Black Lives Matter movement, something which H.B. 1 supporters have denied.

“Can I tell you that this bill is not about racism? Not entirely, I can’t know,” said GOP Senator Ed Hooper, according to CBS News. “But I do believe in my heart that, at the end of the day, we are a nation and a country of law and order.”

Opposing H.B. 1, the American Civil Liberties Union said the legislation would give police broad discretion over what’s deemed a protest and a riot, per CBS News.

“The bill was purposely designed to embolden the disparate police treatment we have seen over and over again directed towards Black and brown people who are exercising their constitutional right to protest,” said Micah Kubic, the executive director of ACLU of Florida, according to CBS News.

The bill passed 23-17, mostly along party lines after more than two hours of heated debate. Only one Republican senator, Jeffrey Brandes, voted against it.

After the bill’s final passage Thursday evening, DeSantis said he looked forward to signing the bill. According to NBC News, he is expected to do so as early as next week.

“This legislation strikes the appropriate balance of safeguarding every Floridian’s constitutional right to peacefully assemble, while ensuring that those who hide behind peaceful protest to cause violence in our communities will be punished,” the governor said in a statement. “Further, this legislation ensures that no community in the state engages in defunding of their police.”

GameStop CEO Sells $12 Million of Stock in Video-Game Chain

GameStop Corp. Chief Executive Officer George Sherman, who is expected to leave the struggling video-game retailer, sold almost $12 million in shares, benefiting from a run-up in the stock fueled by day traders.

Sherman sold 76,097 shares of the company on April 15 for $156.44, a regulatory filing Friday showed, delivering proceeds of $11.9 million.

Representatives of GameStop didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Activist investor Ryan Cohen, the company’s incoming chairman, is spearheading a turnaround effort at GameStop, which is seeking a new CEO to replace Sherman, people with knowledge of the matter have said. Sherman earlier this week forfeited about $98 million in compensation after failing to meet performance targets.

Shares of GameStop have become a favorite of Reddit-reading day traders this year, sending the stock soaring, despite shrinking sales and losses in the latest fiscal year.

Current CEO George Sherman appears to be losing his position as well as his incentive shares, Reuters reports, with inside sources saying the company is seeking a new CEO. Sherman was picked as CEO exactly two years ago in April 2019. He is also a member of the company's board. There is no indication at this time he will leave the board of directors.

GameStop is reclaiming Sherman's 587,000 incentive shares as a forfeit "based on attainment of 0% of stated performance target," according to the related Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing. Sherman retains ownership of 1,774,422 shares after the forfeit, worth around $291.3 million at yesterday's closing price.

Business Insider reports GameStop's Chief Merchandising Officer, Chris Homeister, is also forfeiting 119,000 shares worth approximately $19.9 million. Homeister still retains a 388,000-share stake in the company. GameStop is in the process of shedding its debt and transforming itself into an online retailer, while Sherman's experience is mostly in brick-and-mortar retail, explaining his likely replacement as CEO.

Thousands of "highly confidential" photos entered as evidence into the Ghislaine Maxwell court case may temporarily stall the hearings, as her lawyers have requested time to pour over the new trove of information.

There are tens of thousands of pieces of evidence included in Ms Maxwell's trial, and the new release of 2,100 photos will only add to the mountain of evidence the alleged sex trafficker's lawyers will have to pour over before she goes to trial.

Ms Maxwell's lawyer sent a letter to Judge Alison Nathan requesting more time to review the materials.

The trial is set to begin on 12 July.

Ms Maxwell was hit with two additional charges of sex trafficking late last month after a new accuser levied claims against her. As a result, Ms Maxwell's lawyers have asked to "re-review" the existing evidence to consider the latest charges.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Expands Mask Mandate to 2-Year-Olds

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) doubled down on her restrictive coronavirus strategy by requiring young children to wear masks.

Michigan Capitol Confidential reported the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), headed by Elizabeth Hertel, who just returned from an Alabama beach vacation, issued the order.

Children under the age of 5 had previously been exempt. But now, kids at camps and child care must be covered.

“A good faith effort is made to ensure that children aged 2 to 4 years wear a mask when participating in gatherings,” the order said.

The mandate noted at this point, children under 2 are exempt. It expires May 25.

The order came days after Hertel arrived back from a spring break vacation to Gulf Shores, Alabama and another top Whitmer aide, Tricia Foster, was found to have vacationed in Siesta Key, Florida.

Critics questioned whether there were different rules for top officials. Whitmer responded, “What directors do on their personal time is their business, so long as they are safe.”

On Thursday, the governor appeared on MSNBC and blamed the Republican-controlled legislature and even former President Donald Trump himself for the situation.

After two days of declines, the number of new COVID-19 cases in Michigan bounced back with the second highest daily increase on record and the largest one-day total so far this year.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 8,955 new COVID-19 illnesses on Friday for a total of 779,777. Only the 9,779 new cases on Nov. 20 was a higher daily increase for the state.

State health officials reported 40 deaths attributed to the coronavirus on Friday, which increase Michigan’s total COVID-19 deaths to 16,771.

The news station said 2.393 million people, or 29.6 percent of the population, have been vaccinated.

Biden's Border Approval Ratings Among Hispanics and Independents Crash and Burn

President Joe Biden’s approval rating remains strong, something the left loves to point out as they urge Biden to “go big.”

The problem is that, if you look beyond the raw approval rating, you see a big problem for the president further down in most polls: the numbers on how Americans think he’s dealing with the situation at the southern border. And, no, as much as the media tries to paint it that way, it’s not just cantankerous old white conservatives. It turns out the border crisis is pretty unpopular across the board.

In a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday, 55 percent of adult Americans said they disapproved of Biden’s handling of the influx of migrants at the southern border. Only 29 percent said they approved.

Looking deeper, the numbers on the border crisis were worse than you might think.

Yes, there were the statistics you might expect. Eighty-eight percent of Republicans disapproved of the job Biden was doing, compared to only 6 percent who approved. Meanwhile, 58 percent of Democrats approved of how he was handling the crisis, while 21 percent disapproved.

However, two demographics that Biden should be winning over on this weren’t exactly pleased.

According to the poll, only 27 percent of Latinos said they approved of Biden’s border policies, compared with 55 percent that disapproved. That’s slightly worse than the average — and from a group that, if you believe the cultural narrative, should be more accommodating toward illegal immigration.

Among independents, Biden fared worse. Only 22 percent approved of his handiwork, compared with 64 percent who disapproved.

In fact, the only two demographics included in the poll who approved of Biden’s job were Democrats, as mentioned, and black Americans, with 56 percent approval vs. 28 percent disapproval.

Also worth noting, the job Biden was doing regarding the border crisis was unpopular across every age demographic — and even more unpopular among young Americans than older ones. (Twenty-four percent of respondents 18-24 approved, while 57 percent disapproved. Compared that to those who were over 65, with 35 percent who approved against 50 percent who disapproved.)

The numbers came in spite of the fact Biden won lukewarm approval overall from the 1,237 individuals polled by phone between April 8-12; 48 percent approved of the job he was doing against 42 percent who disapproved. The poll had a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.

i love having a desktop built, had several -10 yrs ago, got 16gig ram, fast board (within reason), way before it was the norm. just swap up stuff from time to time. Also in a small box than normal, can fit box in a small footprint. have used two cheapie laptops (used lenovo for $300 and baby computer for less than half that), worked fine until just now. getting desktop fixed plus a full-functional laptop for first time in a dozen years now coz can't really afford not to have a 'puter when all my time is spent here, don't wanna be messing around.

Credit Suisse Is Sued Over Greensill Capital and Archegos

Credit Suisse Group AG was sued by a pension fund that alleges the bank misled investors and let “high-risk clients” including Greensill Capital and Archegos Capital Management take on too much leverage, in one of the first lawsuits since the twin debacles.

The pension fund, City of St. Clair Shores Police & Fire Retirement System, filed the suit on Friday in federal court in Manhattan.

In it, the fund alleged that Credit Suisse had “concealed material defects in the company’s risk policies and procedures and compliance oversight functions and efforts to allow high-risk clients to take on excessive leverage,” exposing the bank to “billions of dollars in losses.”

The meltdown at Archegos, the family office of investor Bill Hwang, unfolded as some of his biggest wagers started to move against him -- positions he’d built with significant amounts of borrowed money. Archegos relied on that leverage to supercharge its returns, setting Hwang up for the financial disaster that befell him and roiled the market. Archegos started out in 2013 with more than $200 million, a significant fortune but a modest sum in hedge fund terms. Within a decade, it had grown to some $20 billion, according to people who did business with Archegos, marking one of the fastest accumulations of private wealth in the history of modern finance.

Much of that stratospheric leap took place in the past year or two, as Hwang began to employ more and more leverage to boost his returns and as banks, eager for his lucrative trading business, obliged by extending him credit. Hwang, a name that few even on Wall Street had heard of until now, was suddenly worth more than Ray Dalio, Steve Cohen and David Tepper.

When the banks saw Hwang’s bets turn south, they required Archegos to put up more money to cover the decline. When it couldn’t, they began to liquidate his portfolio, which included Chinese technology companies and U.S. media giants such as ViacomCBS Inc. and Discovery Inc.

The rout has inflicted billions of dollars in losses on some of the banks, notably Credit Suisse and Nomura Holdings Inc. Others, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley, got out early.

Liberty University Sues Jerry Falwell Jr. for $10M Months After He Resigned amid Sex Scandal

Liberty University has filed suit against Jerry Falwell Jr., accusing its disgraced former president and chancellor of, among other things, leading a "scheme" to keep his alleged sex scandal from the school.

The suit, published by POLITICO, is seeking more than $10 million in damages amid claims that Falwell's multiple "indiscretions" damaged the reputation of the evangelical Liberty, which Falwell's father founded in 1971.

Falwell Jr. is accused of failing to inform Liberty — from which he resigned in August — of the threat posed by Giancarlo Granda, a former Miami pool attendant who told Reuters that he had an affair with Falwell's wife Becki while Falwell "enjoyed watching from the corner of the room."

Both Falwell and Becki have confirmed her affair with Granda took place, though both have denied Falwell's involvement, and have accused Granda of trying to blackmail them, which he has denied in the past and denied once again in a statement to PEOPLE in October
