g'morning wakes and all u early risers out there, in case i've gone....
frb here, internet seems ok for now so long as it's plugged in not wifi - problems are exotic and hard to fix, re internet updates not installing properly (win fail) and therefore 'puter not connecting to the net at all. Guy rebooted prolly 15x to get even some of the updates done - and then it failed again after ethernet was unplugged for awhile. Just mentioning in case anyone else runs into the same thing, it's pretty bizarre and cable companies don't wanna touch it.
Found a guy who can prolly not only fix dat but other stuff i been puttin' off getting fixed due to 'conspiracy virus' for a year. So in the end, all should be well.
hope things went well yesterday for you, real estate deals are not for the faint of heart.

Wells Fargo profit beats estimates as bank frees reserve funds
Wells Fargo & Co reported first-quarter profit ahead of Wall Street estimates on Wednesday as the bank reduced its reserves by $1.6 billion and costs tied to its years-old sales practices scandal stabilized. The San Francisco-based lender did not report material restructuring and remediation charges in the quarter as Chief Executive Officer Charlie Scharf undertakes what he has said will be a “multi-year journey” to overhaul the bank.
The fourth-largest U.S. lender said profit rose to $4.74 billion, or $1.05 per share, in the three months ended March, from $653 million, or 1 penny per share, a year earlier. Analysts on average had expected a profit of 70 cents per share, according to the IBES estimate from Refinitiv. The loan loss reserve release added 28 cents to the earnings per share.
The slight year-earlier profit was caused by an exceptionally large provision for potential loan losses, as U.S. banks braced for unpaid bills due to the COVID-19 pandemic shuttering the economy and pushing millions out of work. Since then, an ultra-loose monetary policy, trillions in stimulus support and an accelerated vaccination program have largely put the world’s largest economy on a more solid footing.
Earlier in the day, JPMorgan Chase & Co said it released more than $5 billion in reserves in the first quarter, helping the largest U.S. bank’s earnings jump almost 400%.Wells Fargo reported overhead, or efficiency ratio, which measures cost per dollar of revenue, of 77%, from 74% a year earlier. Pre-tax, pre-provision profit fell 13% to $4.07 billion. Changes in pre-provision profit are more important this quarter than usual because they are not impacted by different judgments banks make about future loan losses, analysts have said.
Wells Fargo has been operating under penalties from regulators since 2016 when details of a sales scandal emerged and led to the departure of two chief executives and billions of dollars in litigation and remediation charges and a Federal Reserve imposed asset cap of $1.95 trillion. The asset limit has kept Wells Fargo from freely increasing loans and deposits to boost interest revenue and better cover costs. Other banks’ balance sheets have swelled. Last year Scharf said he was looking for $10 billion of costs to cut over several years from Wells Fargo’s roughly $54 billion annual expense base because its overhead ratio was worse than at peers. “Charge-offs are at historic lows and we are making changes to improve our operations and efficiency, but low interest rates and tepid loan demand continued to be a headwind for us in the quarter,” Scharf said on Wednesday.

Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff has died in a federal prison
Bernie Madoff, the financier who pleaded guilty to orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, has died in a federal prison, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Wednesday. Madoff died at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, apparently from natural causes, the person said. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity.
Last year, Madoff’s lawyers filed court papers to try to get the 82-year-old released from prison in the COVID-19 pandemic, saying he had suffered from end-stage renal disease and other chronic medical conditions. The request was denied. Madoff admitted swindling thousands of clients out of billions of dollars in investments over decades.
A court-appointed trustee has recovered more than $13 billion of an estimated $17.5 billion that investors put into Madoff’s business. At the time of his arrest, fake account statements were telling clients they had holdings worth $60 billion.

Dr. Zhong, who is often looked at as “China’s Fauci,” is a pulmonary specialist and a long-time Communist Party member.

“On the panel, Fauci and Zhong both expressed hopes that COVID-19 restrictions worldwide would continue well into the future,” the reported continued. “Zhong argued that ‘mass vaccinations’ are the ‘commonsense’ approach to engendering herd immunity in the population, but ‘to do that … will take about two or three years time with global collaboration.'”

Summarizing the big bank data dump this morning, Bloomberg's Jenny Surane writes that "as usual, you see a bit of push and pull between banks’ divisions that cater to Main Street and those that focus on Wall Street."
And this quarter, she concludes "it seems as though Wall Street took the win. Again."
*Goldman Sachs posted record profit, helped by a standout performance from its traders and dealmakers. The firm just a few months ago had expressed some real skepticism about the trend of blank-check firms going public. But that didn’t scare it away from the business, which helped boost equity underwriting revenue by more than 300%.
*JPMorgan’s traders also had a strong quarter, with revenue climbing a whopping 25% (analysts were expecting volume and revenue to moderate across the industry). But those results were overshadowed by weak loan demand. In a conference call, JPMorgan’s top executives warned that consumers who received the most recent stimulus checks are simply setting aside the funds for savings or paying down debts rather than going out and spending it. The firm also warned that expenses will be slightly higher this year than it previously thought.
*Wells Fargo doesn’t really have much of a Wall Street operation to lean on, so it’s got nowhere to hide from stubbornly low interest rates and tepid demand for loans. The firm’s net interest income dropped a whopping 22%, and CEO Charlie Scharf warned that low rates would continue to be a drag on earnings.

Ford, GM, Other Michigan Companies Denounce State Senate Voting Bills
The businesses released a joint statement Tuesday saying they are united for principles such as equal ballot access, and against moves that limit voting in “historically disenfranchised communities.”
“Our nation is strongest when we stand together,” the corporations said in the joint statement. “We call on our elected officials to adopt these principles as they proceed in the spirit of inclusion and equality.”
The statement also criticized measures in the 39-bill package from the state Senate, which includes controlling absentee ballot applications and counting; improving election clerk training; empowering poll watchers to better observe electoral activity; and more.
Voters would have to show identification to get an absentee ballot, and governments would be prohibited from providing prepaid postage on ballot envelopes.
But Michigan Senate Republican leaders viewed the legislation not as an effort to disenfranchise communities, but as a bipartisan effort to bolster voter integrity in communities.
Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey (R-Clarklake) said that he is looking to work with colleagues across the aisle on these bills, adding that the legislative process has only just begun.
“At all times, we must use logic, not political sentiment or ‘wokeness’ to build good public policy that will serve all Michiganders and safeguard our democracy,” he said in a statement. “If having an ID is viewed as an obstacle to voting because there is a problem with getting ID, let’s solve that problem.”
Companies are also protesting voting bills in other states. American Airlines, for example, protested Texas state Senate Bill 7, an election integrity bill, because the company said it “limited voting access.”

Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Mexico and Guatemala amid the ongoing migrant crisis on the southern border, but has no plans to visit the US states affected by the havoc, she revealed Wednesday.
Harris made the announcement while speaking to reporters from the White House ahead of a virtual roundtable she was hosting with experts on the Northern Triangle countries — El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras — after being asked if she planned to visit the border.
“The president has asked [Homeland Security] Secretary [Alejandro] Mayorkas to address what is going on at the border, and he has been working very hard at that and is showing some progress,” the vice president replied, explaining why she would not be traveling to the region.
“I have been asked to lead the issue of dealing with root causes in the Northern Triangle, similar to what then-Vice President [Joe Biden] did many years ago,” she continued, going on to note that she had spoken with the presidents of Mexico and Guatemala before stopping herself to note, “Well, I’m probably saying too much.”

Pelosi’s House Democrat Margin Shrinks as Republican Representative Sworn In
April 14, 2021
House Democrats’ majority shrunk as Rep. Julia Letlow (R-La.) is slated to be sworn into office on Wednesday.
Letlow is joining the lower chamber after her husband, Luke Letlow, died of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus earlier this year. Julia Letlow won a special election in March.
With Letlow being sworn in, Republicans have 212 seats in the House compared with the Democrats’ 218 seats. Tie votes fail in the House, which means that Democrats cannot pass legislation if three or more of their members defect and the Republican Party fully opposes them.
And specifically, with such a narrow majority, it means that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) can only afford to lose two Democrat votes on a bill on any legislation opposed by all Democrats. It will leave Pelosi and her caucus with a small room for error on bills including President Joe Biden’s infrastructure package, another COVID-19 stimulus bill, policing bills, or gun-control legislature.
If some moderate Democrats disagree with the party on more left-wing agenda items, such items likely won’t pass.
So far, three Democrats have left the House of Representatives to join the Biden administration, including presidential adviser Cedric Richmond, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge, and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.
Last week, longtime Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) died after a battle with cancer. There is one vacant seat for Republicans after Rep. Ron Wright died in February.
Four special elections are scheduled over the next several months, including three in districts that were previously held by Democrats.
A special runoff election in Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District for Richmond’s seat is scheduled to be held on April 24, as the two candidates who are facing off in the district—which has been solidly Democrat for years—are both Democrat candidates. On May 1, a special election will be held in Texas’ 6th Congressional District to fill Wright’s seat, while days later, on June 1, a special election will be held for the 1st Congressional District for Haaland’s seat.
The special election for Fudge’s seat, which is in Ohio’s 11th Congressional District, will not be held until Nov. 2
In the coming months, Democrats who won recently in centrist districts such as Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) or districts that were won by former President Donald Trump will be key swing votes.
But with such a small majority, it means that two Democrat members can try to veto certain legislation, while progressives can try to use their leverage to block bills they don’t view as leftist enough.
Despite this, top Democrats in the House have expressed optimism that they can push through favored bills.
“Frankly, we’re doing OK as Democrats as you look at this quarter,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said in March.
Pelosi, similarly, said in March that advancing her agenda is “not going to be a problem.”

Re: Cape Canaveral area traffic today, as requested by Planefags.
Ok guys, that took less time than I thought it would.
Checked both major BF sites (vesselfinder and marinetraffic) and not much showing. Marinetraffic is imo has better info for this particular data request, but there's not much showing as surface targets (skunks) that seems unusual. There are a few "unknowns" in the area but they seem to lean toward probably being fishing/sport craft. One of my skunks due east is likely USCG or Navy, but no ID available (of course).
The real oddity is that TWO Disney cruise ships appear to be at anchor off the Space Coast, the DISNEY FANTASY and the DISNEY DREAM. Both are 4,000 passenger cruise liners, and they are both homeported right there at Port Canaveral.
So, the oddity is, why the anchorage??? Are they cleaning the pier, are the ships waiting for pratique (infectious disease clearance) or something else? Or is it actually common practice?
I've no idea, but in all the years I was afloat in the Navy, as well as the cruises I've taken, I cannot recall EVER ONCE seeing a cruise ship at anchor that didn't have some issue. Those things don't make money just dropping the hook and hanging around homeport.

According to this article, though, none of the Port Canaveral cruise ships are likely to embark passengers again until July. I suppose they could be using this as an opportunity to do some refresher training, or maybe they ran out of room and the Disney boats have to spend their time doing the bobbing cork routine (highly doubtful to me, but wtf knows?)

Powell: QE taper likely "well before" interest rate increase
The Federal Reserve will reduce its bond purchases before it commits to an interest rate increase, Fed chair Jerome Powell said on Wednesday.
“We will reach the time at which we will taper asset purchases when we have made substantial further progress towardsour goalsfrom last December,” Powell said in comments to the Economic Club of Washington. “That would in all likelihood be before, well before, the time we would consider raising interest rates. We have not voted on that order but that is the sense of the guidance.” A decision on whether the balance sheet would subsequently be allowed to shrink has not been made yet, Powell said.

The former Minnesota police officer who was captured on camera fatally shooting Daunte Wright during a traffic stop will face charges in Wright's death, authorities said Wednesday.
Kim Potter, a 26-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, will be charged with second-degree manslaughter in connection with Wright's death, Washington County Attorney Pete Orput announced.Wright, who is Black, died of a gunshot wound to the chest, according the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office, which classified the manner of death as a homicide.

George Floyd’s girlfriend was Daunte Wright’s former teacher, according to Wright’s aunt, who spoke at a press conference Tuesday in Minneapolis with members from both families whose loved ones died following encounters with Minnesota law enforcement.
Ben Crump, a prominent civil rights attorney representing the families of Floyd and Wright in their separate cases, held a press conference outside the Hennepin County Courthouse on Tuesday amid the ongoing trial for Derek Chauvin.
"And the craziest thing to find out today is that my family has connections to this man, to this family. His girlfriend was a teacher for my nephew," Daunte Wright’s aunt, Naisha Wright, said at the press conference. "My nephew was a lovable young man. … My nephew’s blood is on your hands."
Late Tuesday into early Wednesday marked the third consecutive night of civil unrest in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, as violent demonstrations have also spilled into nearby Minneapolis. The Minnesota National Guard has bolstered its presence as the trial for Chauvin nears its ends and closing arguments are expected next week.
Naisha Wright did not name Floyd’s ex-girlfriend. But Courteney Ross, 45, testified during the trial for Chauvin two weeks ago that she and Floyd continued an on-again, off-again relationship since meeting in 2017 at a Salvation Army shelter where he worked as a security guard. She told the court they both grew addicted to opioids after initially being prescribed them for pain.

Bain joins CVC in Toshiba bid, with KKR also in the running
U.K. private equity firm CVC Capital Partners is joining forces with U.S. peer Bain Capital to draw up a proposal for the buyout of Japan's Toshiba, Nikkei has learned. U.S. private equity firm KKR is also considering its own buyout offer, while multiple U.S. and European funds are seeking investment opportunities.
Toshiba said on Wednesday that Nobuaki Kurumatani has resigned as CEO and that Chairman Satoshi Tsunakawa has been appointed as his successor. Management under the new leader will be tasked with reviewing the offers in a transparent manner.
CVC plans to submit a revised offer to privatize Toshiba that includes the participation of Bain Capital by Friday. Bain, which led the buyout of Toshiba's semiconductor unit Kioxia in 2018, has strong ties with the Japanese company. Bain has $130 billion in assets under management.
Tsunakawa on Wednesday said that the revised offer CVC will be considered once a formal proposal is received. However, any foreign investment will come under close scrutiny by the government which had revised and tightened a foreign exchange and trade law in May last year for national security reasons. Nuclear energy was classified as a sector key to Japan’s national security and Toshiba, which is involved in that business, was designated a strategically important company.
But Toshiba's significance to the country was clear even in 2017 when Singapore-based Effissimo Capital Management came under regulatory review after it ended up with a stake of more than 10% in the Japanese company which had issued shares.
CVC is hoping to invite government-linked Development Bank of Japan and Japan Investment Corp. into its bid, although it has yet to begin detailed negotiations with the two entities. It hopes those ties will help it to better assess Tokyo's view of the deal in terms of foreign investment regulations.
KKR, which is considering its own proposal, is also thought to be keen on seeking support from JIC and DBJ. The challenge foreign parties face is in adding a local partner to smooth the deal over and help investors clear regulatory hurdles so that Toshiba’s management and its employees will be open to being bought out.
U.S. private equity fund Apollo Global Management and Canada’s Brookfield Asset Management are also considering participating in the buyout.
An independent committee consisting of Toshiba's 11 board members will review the buyout offers.

On Friday Joe Biden will for the first time host a foreign leader at the White House and the stakes couldn't be higher, given he's reportedly urging Japan’s prime minister Yoshihide Suga to come out publicly and more forcefully alongside the United States in full support of Taiwan against what's seen as hostile Chinese encroachment on the democratic island. A bombshell new report in FT details that Biden will seek Japan's cooperation in a joint statement which shines light on "rising Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific region" at a moment Tokyo is among other regional US allies attempting to ward off expansive Chinese territorial claims. In Japan's case it's currently attempting to warn off Beijing from the Senkaku Islands, which is poised to escalate dramatically at any moment, given the Tokyo government just authorized its Coast Guard to be able to use deadly force should incidents with Chinese fishing vessels become threatening.
