The yen is a whisker away from sliding to the lowest in about 24 years as investors ramp up short bets on Japan’s beleaguered currency. The dollar-yen rose 0.2% to 134.46 in early Asia trading Thursday-it's backed off a little- less than one yen away from its 2002 high of 135.15. It’s the fifth straight day of declines for the yen, as the Bank of Japan keeps local yields capped to boost a moribund economy while US equivalents climb on rising interest-rate expectations. “Ultimately, we think the fate of the yen depends mainly on monetary policy in the US and Japan,” James Reilly, economist at Capital Economics, wrote in a note. “We forecast the yen to depreciate to 140 per dollar over the coming months.”

The military has not confirmed how many people were on board, but they said initial reports that there was nuclear material on the aircraft were incorrect. A Marine unit of five, including the pilot, are feared dead after their military aircraft crashed in the California desert.

The MV-22B Osprey crashed in Imperial County near Highway 78 and the town of Glamis - 30 miles north of the Mexican border, and 150 miles east of San Diego.

The aircraft belonged to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, headquartered in Miramar, San Diego.

Australia’s Biggest Bank Sees RBA Cutting Interest Rates in 2023

Australia’s largest lender expects current aggressive monetary policy tightening to weigh heavily on the economy and force the Reserve Bank to reverse course and cut interest rates in the second half of 2023. Commonwealth Bank of Australia on Thursday downgraded its GDP growth forecasts and now predicts the A$2.2 trillion ($1.6 trillion) economy will expand 3.5% this year, down from a previous 4.7%, and then slow to a “below‑trend” 2.1% in 2023, compared with 3.1% seen previously. The RBA “looks very intent on dropping the inflation rate quickly,” said Gareth Aird, head of Australian Economics at CBA. “But this will come at the expense of growth in aggregate demand, particularly household consumption.”

Australia’s central bank surprised markets and economists this week with a 50 basis point rate rise to 0.85% and signaled its intention to rapidly normalize policy. Governor Philip Lowe said the RBA’s board will do “what is necessary” to ensure that inflation returns to its 2-3% target band.
