China nears launch of third carrier, turning up pressure on Taiwan

China reportedly plans to launch its third aircraft carrier as early as this month, allowing Beijing to maintain a constant military presence in the East and South China seas and erode U.S. clout in the region.

Expected to be named Jiangsu, following the convention of naming carriers after coastal provinces, the vessel is China's second domestically built aircraft carrier. It will likely be commissioned as early as 2024, giving China the world's largest fleet of carriers after the U.S.

Satellite photos taken by Maxar Technologies indicate changes at the shipyard where the carrier is being built. Those changes suggest the vessel could be afloat in weeks or even days. "Its launch will be a seminal moment in China's ongoing modernization efforts and a symbol of the country's growing military might," the Center for Strategic and International Studies said in a report. The carrier is also China's first to be outfitted with an electromagnetic catapult. The system can launch aircraft in quick succession using a limited amount of deck space, leaving room for more aircraft and increasing the vessel's strike capabilities. China's other two carriers, the Liaoning and the Shandong, use ski jumps. These are easier to build but take up more space.

Electromagnetic catapults are currently only used in the newest U.S. nuclear-powered carriers. They require sophisticated technology to operate and are prone to breakdowns. "The U.S. military has had a difficult time with developing and operating the catapult," a Japanese government source said. "It's hard to believe that China will put it to practical use." There are also doubts on whether the new Chinese carrier, which runs on conventional fuel, can power the energy-intensive system. Still, having three aircraft carriers will significantly expand China's strategic options, allowing the country to have one vessel on a mission, another in training and a third undergoing repairs. It could deploy a carrier strike group, including destroyers and submarines, to multiple regions at once.

China deployed the Liaoning to waters south of Okinawa in May, where it staged over 300 plane takeoffs and landings. The new carrier is expected to boost Chinese military demonstrations in the South China Sea, where Beijing faces numerous maritime disputes, as well as in the East China Sea, home to the Japan-administered Senkaku Islands claimed by China as the Diaoyu.

Mebby this who was being forced yesterday-because is was down and did NOT get back up at all.

Connected to Andreas Halvorsen at Tiger Global-used to be CIO there-they have a Bitcoin fund too so that is doing great YTD.../s

The D1 site is all effed up as if you try to access the 'Private Equity Funds' it 404's you...

The rest of them are just basic information

Plus 'Bob' in cap#2 is looking pretty bad right now and just habbens to be one of the two heads of Global Compliance

https://d1-capital.com/team/

Hedge Fund D1 Sinks Nearly 23% This Year on Public, Private Bets

D1 Capital Partners, the hedge fund firm that wagers on public and private companies, has tumbled 22.5% this year through May, according to people familiar with the matter. The fund fell 4% last month, with its portfolio of stocks sinking 13% while its book of private investments was about flat, the people said, declining to be identified because the information isn’t public. The returns are for the fund’s biggest share class which invests half of its assets in equities and the rest in startups.

A spokesman for the New York-based firm declined to comment. Dan Sundheim’s firm is the latest hybrid hedge fund to post disappointing returns this year amid turbulent markets. The S&P 500 Index has sunk about 13% in the first five months of 2022.

For the year, D1’s public market portfolio fell 44%, while its book of closely-held companies dropped 8%, the people said.

https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/hedge-fund-d1-sinks-nearly-23-this-year-on-public-private-bets-1.1774379

So this Dan Sundheim used to be the CIO at Viking Global which he left in 2017 to start up D1 and Viking Global's Founder is Andreas Halvorsen who is one of Julian Robertson's 'Tiger Cubs'....probably this thing was being margined on Friday.

Daniel Sundheim

In January 2021, the firm lost $4 billion (20% of its capital) due to the GameStop short squeeze

>The golden Boy at Tiger losing his ASS (and has been all year) and look for the next victims to come from that list

This one (D1) is connected to that list of Cubs via his stint as CIO at Tiger Global-see cap#3

> so someone is getting margined again-and it is likely one of the 'Cubs' because they all do/did the same thing. We won't know who until after it is done...but the drop is NOT because Elon is laying off 10%

He also is a minority owner in the Charlotte Hornets along with recently margined and closed down Melvin Capital founder Gabe Plotkin...Mike sure knows how to pick 'em

this from September 2019

Michael Jordan sells minority stake in Hornets Sports & Entertainment

Gabe Plotkin, Daniel Sundheim set to join HSE as partners.

Michael Jordan, who gradually assumed near-total control of Hornets Sports & Entertainment since purchasing the team in 2010, will be adding a pair of partners in the near future.

The team announced Saturday evening that Gabe Plotkin, Founder and Chief Investment Officer, Melvin Capital, and Daniel Sundheim, Founder and Chief Investment Officer of D1 Capital, will join HSE in a transaction subject to NBA approval. The organization oversees the Charlotte Hornets as well as the Spectrum Center.

“I’m excited to welcome Gabe and Dan as my partners in Hornets Sports & Entertainment,” said Jordan in a statement. “While I will continue to run the Charlotte Hornets, make all decisions related to the team and organization, and remain the team’s NBA Governor, Gabe and Dan’s investment in the franchise is invaluable, as we continue to modernize, add new technology and strive to compete with the best in the NBA. Both Gabe and Dan are industry standard-setters and proven leaders, with a belief in philanthropy and a passion for the game of basketball. They share my commitment to Charlotte and the Carolinas, and I look forward to working with and learning from them.”

and from May 19th nice guy 'Gabe' is still charging his clients he fugged over by getting stuck in the GME short squeeze.

Melvin Capital clients fume at Gabe Plotkin over fee charges

Melvin Capital said it is finally shutting down after getting clobbered by Reddit investors last year — and now clients are doubly angry because its founder Gabe Plotkin is still charging them fees, The Post has learned.

Plotkin — whose massive short positions in “meme stocks” like GameStop made him a surprise punching bag for day traders during the throes of the pandemic — told investors in a Wednesday letter obtained by The Post that he will continue to charge fees to clients through June 1.

One angry client speculated that Plotkin has spent most of April and May considering whether or not to keep the fund open instead of making investors money, adding that the continued fees were “beyond greedy.”

“I’m sure he spent the last two weeks on lawyers and paperwork and not on the fund or making us money,” the source fumed. “Meanwhile he’s charging us fees for the entire month?”

The source adds that Plotkin can afford to reimburse the management fees for May. “The guy has made billions over the last many years — he’s not pinched for cash.”

Investors will begin getting some money back as soon as May 31 and will receive the rest of their funds the first three weeks of July, according to Plotkin’s letter.

SAM899 USAF C-32AJ.C.O.S. Mark Milleydeparted Stockholm Int'l after about 10 hours on the ground

U.S. warship arrives in Stockholm for military exercises, and as a warning

ABOARD USS KEARSARGE, Port of Stockholm — If ever there was a potent symbol of how much Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has altered Europe, the sight of this enormous battleship — bristling with 26 warplanes and 2,400 Marines and sailors, and moored among the pleasure craft and tour boats that ply this port — would certainly be it. “No one in Stockholm can miss that there is this big American ship here in our city,” said Micael Byden, supreme commander of the Swedish armed forces, standing on the amphibious assault ship’s deck in the shadow of a MV-22 Osprey under a clear sky Saturday. “There are more capabilities on this ship than I could gather in a garrison.” In this perennially neutral country that is suddenly not so neutral, the USS Kearsarge, which showed up just two weeks after Sweden and Finland announced their intention to seek membership in NATO, is the promise of what that membership would bring: protection if Russian President Vladimir Putin turns his ire toward his Nordic neighbors.

Top US general, in Stockholm, signals support for Sweden and Finland’s NATO bids

Top US General Mark Milley said Saturday that the United States is determined to support Sweden and Finland as the countries pursue NATO membership, a statement underscored by his visit to the USS Kearsarge after it became the largest US warship ever to dock in Stockholm. “It’s important for us, the United States, and it’s important for the other NATO countries to show solidarity with both Finland and Sweden in this exercise,” Milley said ahead of NATO’s annual Baltic Sea naval manoeuvres. He was speaking during a joint press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson. The “Baltops 22” naval exercise — set to run from June 5 to 17 and involve 14 NATO countries as well as Sweden and Finland — takes place this year in the shadow of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

they all do/did the same thing so one by one getting picked off and it depends how much leverage they used and how they structured the ownership. The first one Archegos (Bill Hwang ) was massively levered and then hid the ownership of the equities at the banks via his scheme to not show it on his books-they happily complied and took it on (and then probably leveraged THAT too) but as soon as it the markets turned-and they din't really drop that much in his (Archegos') case they started ditching them so he was probably at 200:1 or moar-and then whatever the banks did to it after they took it on-cause you know they did

It's one big ball of fat-bloated paper that is itching to tank-no wonder they are over $2T a day and $35-45B of Securities 'lending' thrown into that fat stinking pile

That's why I say sideways or flat doesn't cut it-gotta go up-and lookout when it drops a few points then it just starts the feedback loop.

The drops we've had are nothing in the big picture-you noe that..been around long enough to see capitulation once mebby twice right?

These people have never seen it at all and think 5% is the end of the world....wait-but that is only if it is allowed and right now it's not being allowed so we get shit like friday.

The other days where it drops and just stays there

There is nothing special about ANY of them-all think leverage=brians.

That worked for a while but now not so much

Love watching them get taken out but not the part where everyone else feels it.

hello SEC right?

Mebby those two shoulda listed to this from the other day >>137170 pb

But they, SEC, make fun of the retail people that got burned by all that-those fuggers did NOTHING different.

France's Macron draws ire for saying world must not 'humiliate' Russia

French President Emmanuel Macron warned against humiliating Russia, despite its “historic” mistake of invading Ukraine, in an interview published Friday by French press.

"We must not humiliate Russia so that the day when the fighting stops we can build an exit ramp through diplomatic means," Macron said. "I am convinced that it is France's role to be a mediating power." The French president said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion is a “historic and fundamental mistake for his people, for himself and for history.”

Macron’s comments sparked outrage from Ukrainian and American officials alike, many calling the leader’s comments tone-deaf and embarrassing. “Calls to avoid humiliation of Russia can only humiliate France and every other country that would call for it. Because it is Russia that humiliates itself,” Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s minister of foreign affairs, wrote in a tweet Saturday. “We all better focus on how to put Russia in its place. This will bring peace and save lives.”

and this shit literally writes itself-does he not remember his tweet WAY back in February

“Emmanuel Macron is humiliating himself,” U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., also tweeted Saturday. “Russia has already been humiliated, and true to their reputation the French are trying to raise the white flag.”

London Transport Advises Against Monday Travel Because of Strike

London’s transport operator warned of “severe disruption” on Monday as a 24-hour strike is expected to shut down much of the city’s Tube network. Transport for London is advising people to avoid traveling all day tomorrow and before 8 a.m. on Tuesday “unless necessary,” according to a statement on Sunday. While some train services will run, TfL expects “severe disruption” across the Tube network, with many stations especially those in central and south London closed.

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers has called the strike over what it says are proposals that will lead to 600 job cuts and changes to working agreements and pension arrangements. TfL says no such proposals have been made. “No changes have been proposed to pensions and nobody has or will lose their job as a result of the proposals we have set out,” TfL Chief Operating Officer Andy Lord said in the statement. “My message to the RMT is this -- it’s not too late to call off tomorrow’s strike action.” TfL met the union at the conciliation service ACAS earlier this week and is “keen on further talks.”

Transport for London’s revenue plunged after the coronavirus brought about dramatic changes to commuting habits, normalizing working from home for many professions. The transit authority secured a fourth emergency funding extension from the UK government in February, and is due to negotiate a long-term settlement later this month.

Britons have been enjoying a four-day weekend for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, triggering an exodus to destinations including Dublin and Spanish sun-spots such as Palma de Mallorca. Many travelers will return home Sunday, testing the capacity of road networks and airports’ ability to process arrivals.

Treasury Yields Staring Down 3% Threshold Await CPI for Next Cue

The fate of the world’s biggest bond market is hanging largely on a single question: Has inflation in the US already peaked?

NO...see here >>137292 lb under Securities Lending Ops-they have shot the wad and CPI will come in at or just below 9%-then what nikkas?---so Fugged

They (bond market) already told you Kenny's Chicken is back on last week...cap #3 >>137291 lb

Then they will start lowering them probably in early 2023 because they need to buy that G.I. Joe with the Kung-Fu Grip (ala make it look good for Christmas season)-they told you THAT in February this year >>126758 pb

Treasury yields have swung back at forth since last month as traders try to game out whether the Federal Reserve will need to stick with an aggressive series of interest-rate hikes or have room to ease up if the economy slows enough to snap the steepest inflation in four decades.

The Friday release of the May consumer-price index report may help clarify the outlook, potentially holding the key to whether the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield stages another retreat or retests May’s high by pushing back over the psychologically key 3% level. It flirted with that Friday, when the yield rose as much as 8 basis points to 2.98% after the monthly jobs report underscored the economy’s continued strength.

With wages rising steeply amid a tight labor market, swaps contracts are pricing in certainty that the Fed will raise its target rate by a half-percentage point at its June and July meetings. But there’s still no strong consensus on whether policymakers will continue that pace at the September meeting or enact a quarter-point move, a step they may take if they’re worried about driving the economy into a recession or feel confident inflation is coming down. Treasury yields rose across the board Friday after the Labor Department reported that US firms hired at a faster-than-expected pace in May. It also showed that average hourly earnings were up 5.2% from a year earlier, down slightly from 5.5% in April but still well above pre-pandemic levels. The May CPI figure is forecast to show an annual increase of 8.3%, matching April’s pace and down from as much as 8.5% in March.

Kishida looks to be first Japanese leader to attend NATO summit

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is planning to attend a NATO summit slated for late June in Spain, a development that would make him the first Japanese leader to take part in a gathering of the Western alliance, a government source said Saturday.

Kishida's attendance at the June 29-30 event in Madrid (see here for linky on Summit >>137395 ) is dependent on the domestic political situation leading up to an Upper House election likely to be held July 10, the source said

Through Kishida's participation in the NATO summit, officials hope Japan will strengthen coordination with the United States and European countries in response to Russia's war in Ukraine and possible contingencies over the Taiwan Strait. Kishida plans to travel to the Spanish capital after attending a three-day summit of the Group of Seven industrialized nations from June 26 in Germany, according to the source. Australia, New Zealand and South Korea have also been invited to attend the NATO summit as partner countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

South Korea has sounded out Japan about the first in-person meeting between Kishida and President Yoon Suk-yeol on the sidelines of the summit, the sources said, as the two countries have been struggling to improve their relations strained by disagreements over wartime issues Kishida and Yoon held phone talks in March after Yoon won the presidential election, agreeing to meet directly at an early date. Attendance by Japan and the other non-NATO countries would give out a strong message of solidarity to the international community over the Ukraine crisis. There are, however, mixed views in the government and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party over Kishida's participation as the NATO summit's schedule clashes with the expected June 22 kickoff of official campaigning for the Upper House election. Some government officials think Kishida's summit diplomacy with Western and Indo-Pacific leaders helps boost public support for his ruling coalition. But some LDP lawmakers believe the prime minister, whose support rates are already relatively high, should focus on campaigning in as many electoral districts as possible before the election.

As of May 22, the Kishida Cabinet's approval rating stood at 61.5%, the highest level since he took office last October, according to a Kyodo News survey.
