Joe Biden's Tuesday visit to Iowa
Joe Biden will be in Iowa Tuesday to discuss his economic agenda and will announce lifting restrictions on E15 gasoline sales to help ease fuel prices. Biden's trip comes as gas prices reach record highs and his approval numbers in the Hawkeye State and across the country crater. The president will direct the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to use an emergency waiver to allow summer sales of gasoline with 15% ethanol, called E15, to help boost fuel supplies, a senior administration official said Monday. Biden will make the announcement at a Poet ethanol plant in Menlo, a town of fewer than 400 people about 50 miles west of Des Moines. The move is expected to cut prices for U.S. motorists by at least 10 cents a gallon, the White House said. E15 is currently banned in some states from June 1 to Sept. 15 because is believed to contribute to smog during warmer weather. Supporters of ethanol say that is unfounded.

Biden's Sister Blames Trump For Hunter Biden's Legal Problems
President Joe Biden’s younger sister defended Hunter Biden on April 11, claiming that her nephew’s legal issues are just political attacks by former President Donald Trump intended on bringing down her brother. Valerie Biden Owens, a longtime campaign manager for Joe Biden, made the remarks in an interview with “CBS Mornings.” She was asked by host Gayle King whether Hunter Biden was “a problem for the family.” In response, Owens said, “No.”
King pressed on, pointing out how Hunter Biden’s business dealings have come under scrutiny. Owens responded by saying that the attention to her nephew’s business activities was born out of the 2020 presidential election. “The only race that I wasn’t enthusiastic about Joe getting involved in was the 2020 presidency,” Owens said, “because I expected, and was not disappointed, that it would be ugly and mean, and it would be an attack on my brother Joe, personally and professionally, because the former president is very intent on bringing my brother down.” “I assumed from the beginning that the former president and his entourage would attack my brother by going and attacking my family,” Owens added. “[Trump] thought the weak link would be to attack my brother’s child.” Owens then went on to defend her nephew. “Hunter has written in exquisite detail about his struggle with addiction, his walk through hell, and I am so grateful that he’s been able to walk out of hell. But I don’t think that there’s a family in this country who hasn’t tasted it,” she told King. King then interrupted Owens, reminding her that their discussion should center on Hunter Biden’s business deals.
In the end, Owen seemed to dismiss any allegations of wrongdoing against her nephew. There hasn’t been a ‘there’ there since it was mentioned in 2019 or whenever it first was,” Owens said. Citing Treasury documents, a 2020 Senate report found that there was “potential criminal activity relating to transactions among and between Hunter Biden, his family, and his associates with Ukrainian, Russian, Kazakh, and Chinese nationals,” while Joe Biden was vice president during the Obama administration.
The report pointed out how Hunter Biden made “questionable transactions” with Chinese nationals connected to the Chinese regime and military. The younger Biden was found to have tried to broker a $120 million oil agreement in 2014 and 2015 between a Chinese state-owned oil company and Kazakhstan’s prime minister at that time, British newspaper the Daily Mail reported in February, citing emails obtained from his alleged abandoned laptop.
In March, Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) presented bank records on the Senate floor showing a Chinese energy company made payments to Hunter Biden. On April 8, 95 House Republicans wrote a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, urging him to appoint a special counsel to investigate the younger Biden. “It is increasingly clear that Hunter Biden took advantage of his father’s position as Vice President to develop business relationships with clients in Ukraine, China, and Kazakhstan,” the lawmakers said. “A special counsel would also ensure there is no bias in the investigation or undue influence from the White House.”

Used car prices jump 40%: CarMax
CarMax sold 194,318 used vehicles during 4th quarter, down 5.2% from 204,928 a year ago.
Inflation may have consumers re-thinking whether they need that used car.
CarMax experienced a slowdown in fourth-quarter used car sales volume as its average retail selling price jumped 39.7% year-over-year to $29,312, an increase of approximately $8,300 per unit. CarMax sold a total of 194,318 used vehicle units during the fourth quarter, down 5.2% from 204,928 used vehicle units a year ago. Comparable store sales for its used vehicles fell 6.5% year-over-year. Meanwhile, the company sold 149,095 wholesale vehicle units, up 43.8% from 103,676 wholesale vehicle units a year ago. The average wholesale selling price surged 85.2% year-over-year to $11,495, an increase of nearly $5,300 per unit.
"We believe a number of macro factors weighed on our fourth quarter unit sales performance, including declining consumer confidence, the omicron-fueled surge in COVID cases, vehicle affordability, and the lapping of stimulus benefits paid in the prior year period," CarMax said in its earnings release Tuesday. Overall, CarMax's net earnings for the fourth quarter fell 22.8% year-over-year to $159.8 million, or 98 cents per share, while net revenue for the quarter rose 48.8% year-over-year to $7.7 billion. Looking ahead, CarMax has revised its five-year financial targets for vehicle sales and revenue introduced in May 2021. The company now anticipates selling between 2 million and 2.4 million vehicles through its combined retail and wholesale channels and generating between $33 billion and $45 billion in revenue by fiscal 2026.
The latest quarterly figures from CarMax come as inflation rose 8.5% year-over-year in March, the fastest pace since December 1981, when inflation hit 8.9%. Used car and truck prices, which have been a major component of the inflation increase, are still up 35.3% from the previous year, but actually declined by 1.8% in the one-month period between February and March.

German president says Kyiv rejected his offer to visit Ukraine
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Tuesday that he had offered to visit Ukraine with other EU leaders, but Kyiv had told him his trip was "not wanted". The snub comes as Steinmeier, a former foreign minister, is facing criticism at home and abroad for his years-long detente policy towards Moscow, which he has since admitted was a mistake. Speaking during a visit to Warsaw, Steinmeier said he had planned to travel to Kyiv with the presidents of Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania this week "to send a strong signal of joint European solidarity with Ukraine.
"I was prepared to do this, but apparently, and I must take note of this, this was not wanted in Kyiv," he told reporters.
Germany's topselling Bild newspaper quoted an unnamed Ukrainian diplomat as saying: "We all know of Steinmeier's close relations with Russia here... He is not welcome in Kyiv at the moment. We will see whether that changes."

Mkt Fag: Nasty reversal on the indices...muh margin calls next?-prolly not-cause leverage is mistaken for brians edition
Got off to a decent start-the shorts squeezed on the open-lather, rinse, repeat on that and the excuse earlier was "muh inflation wasn't as bad as it could have been"- see here >>133041, >>133057, >>133060
Got the end o' the day stick save into the close to make it "not as bad" but inflation don't lie...only Wall Street does. Still a big exit here though- >>133061...they "know". Add in a few shorts covering cause it wasn't just "longs" buying the close-but it made it appear better than the nasty reversal you just saw all day. NASDAQ volume really picked up into the close and the same pattern continues-big volume on open followed by lower than picks up into close a "U" shape if you please. And all three majors well under daily averages volume-wise: been that way for a few weeks excepting the "launch" during FOMC week mentioned below. Small caps (RUT-Chicago Options ) was the only decent one today as it only went red for a short period of time and it still moves around after the majors close. They also couldn't get those shorts to cover enmasse (the "Most shorted Stocks")-but some did into close-already mentioned.
The latest to "speak" Fed Head Brainard just repeated the overused cliche that "We are ready to get to work"...the dollar responded by climbing...again after the cliff dive at 8:30am EST when those "lower than expected" CPI #'s released-see cap #4
Go here if you want the real skinny on inflation-haz always had the truth and calculates it using the older methodology they have changed many times over the last 30 years-it still isn't 100% spot on but it's better than most: https://www.shadowstats.com/
You all shop and see what is habbeneing-you don't need the MSM to tell you what you have witnessed over the last year and a half. The fugen idiot at Blakcrock said this " “Predicting where we would have been today several months ago would have been next to impossible, particularly given some of the exogenous shock to the system we’ve witnessed Rick Rieder, BlackRock Inc.’s chief investment officer of global fixed income”-BULLSHIT it was already heading this way because all you fuggers already priced in rate cuts starting in 2023 back in February-so GFY- >>126758 pb. It the huge shit pile of derivatives that has gotten us here and effectively kept the petro-dollar "alive" cause it died in the late 90's and it's only becasue of that has it remained "viable". over $48T in OTC derivatives at JP Morgan sez you are ALL FOS and that is just ONE example. Whatever "turd" they lay tomorrow (JPM) the stock will go up-mebby not on the same day but they always do the opposite because the crowded trade is to be short these numbnuts so the don't want to "pay out" on that cause they don't have the $$ on that level-why you saw the markets sky during the FOMC announcement week as that was a crowded trade short and evicerated any short positions still left going into the OpEx expiry.
The U.S. consumer price index rose 1.2% last month, the biggest increase in 16-1/2 years and cementing the case for a 50 basis points interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve next month. The figure marks the fastest rise since December 1981 and follows a 7.9% annual increase in February-see below on bond market. It rose 8.5% in March compared to the same month last year. Oil up-see cap#5 because OPEC said they couldn't replace the supply loss from Russia-they about 10% of total oil production-not a problem but somehow it is. They are just driving the price up for the coming Aramco IPO by playing coy-"see you need us...". The Yen still climbing towards that ¥130 spot and solidly over 125 now. Got to ¥125.73 at about 2:38am EST then backed off
XLF-the bank ETF got juiced upwards too but has also had a nasty reversal-JP Morgan 'announces' tomorrow (and it's equity is down almost 16% YTD) and likely just take loss reserves and apply it to bottom line while also buying back shares-old, tired game that. And the 10 year gettin whipped around as it was up over 2.8% (2.832% just before 4am EST)-before plunging after the CPI print...imagine that.

A group of banks led by JPMorgan Chase & Co. is struggling to sell a $585 million junk bond to help fund the acquisition of building materials business Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope Inc. by buyout firm KPS Capital Partners, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Pricing discussions on the unsecured notes have increased to a yield of up to 11%, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the transaction is private. Trudeau criticizes Alberta's approach to opioid crisis
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the Alberta government is ignoring science in its approach to the opioid crisis. During a Tuesday stop in Edmonton Trudeau said he discussed the rise in drug poisonings across the province with Mayor Amarjeet Sohi Monday night, adding they are both “extremely worried.
“**We know science-based, community-based solutions are a huge part of it, that’s why as a government we continue to push for safe consumption sites. It’s unfortunate to see Alberta seems to be going in the opposite direction away from the science-based and harm-reduction approach,” said Trudeau. “The reality is, here in Alberta, we’ve seen far too many tragedies around the opioid epidemic,” said Truedau.
His comments come after Edmonton’s city council decided Monday to look into applying for an exemption to federal rules controlling the simple possession of illicit substances in hopes of curbing drug poisoning deaths. Trudeau was asked whether Edmonton council, if it moves forward with the effort, can expect to get approval by 2023. “We will welcome their application when it comes in,” said Trudeau, who added the federal government is already working through a similar application from British Columbia. “We’re going to make sure we’re grounded in science, grounded in supporting people,” said Trudeau.
In response, Eric Engler, press secretary to Mental Health and Addictions Associate Minister Mike Ellis tweeted that Trudeau’s comments were “shameful” for not recognizing the importance of recovery.

Asian shares gain as U.S. inflation data not as bad as feared
Asian shares rose on Wednesday boosted by U.S. inflation figures that fared better than markets' worst expectations - and caused U.S. yields to pause their march higher - though Chinese shares remained pressured by COVID-19.
________
They all think this is as bad as it will get.....or at least that is what they are saying-I don't think they believe that at all.

Did CPI Just Peak?
all the usual suspects coming out and saying it..

JP Morgan must be laying a huge turd in the morning but somehow they will "shine it up".
They spent $18.408B buying back it's own stock in 2021
https://ycharts.com/companies/JPM/stock_buyback
As already mentioned shorting any of the bank stocks is a crowded trade so it is very likely that no matter what they announce it will go up- they are already projected to have a $1B loss of just Russian exposure
from April 9th
JPMorgan could lose $1B from Russia exposure, buybacks to slow down, Dimon says
https://seekingalpha.com/news/3820302-jpmorgan-could-lose-1b-from-russia-exposure-buybacks-to-slow-down-dimon-says
That's ok again as mentioned they will just "apply" loss reserves to that and it will all be just fine.
Our Futs are already up see cap #4.
begin remaining part of ZH article
And with both Goldman and JPM also jumping on the "peak inflation" bandwagon, all we now need is for central bankers to climb on board and to conclude that this time inflation - no longer transitory mind you - has finally peaked. That will be the clearest signal yet that a lengthy period of brutal stagflation is now inevitable.

>The figure marks the fastest rise since December 1981 and follows a 7.9% annual increase in February. It rose 8.5% in March compared to the same month last year.
Share market sentiment was also capped by gains in oil and other commodity prices after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that on-and-off peace negotiations "have again returned to a dead-end situation for us", which also hurt the euro. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.5% and Japan's Nikkei (.N225) jumped 1.54%. S&P500 futures gained 0.2% and Nasdaq futures gained 0.57% in Asia trade. Data published on Tuesday showed U.S. monthly consumer prices increased by the most in 16-1/2 years in March as war in Ukraine boosted the cost of gasoline to record highs, cementing the case for a 50 basis points interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve next month. The inflation data sent U.S. yields lower on Tuesday snapping seven straight sessions of gains, though they regained a little ground late in the day and into early trade on Wednesday. Brent crude briefly dropped below $100 earlier this week, but rallied sharply on Tuesday, and gains continued into Wednesday trade. Corn futures rose to a one month high and wheat futures reached a three week peak. Chinese share markets gave back their gains from Tuesday afternoon when tourism and consumer goods stocks had jumped on reports that COVID-19 curbs could be eased in some pilot areas.

China’s High-Yield Bond Market Losses Deepen: Evergrande Update
China’s offshore high-yield credit market has reached a critical juncture, falling back again in recent days after key metrics showed stress reaching record levels earlier in March. Distress in the nation’s $870 billion offshore debt market remained at the highest level, Bloomberg’s China Credit Tracker shows. Losses deepened to a fresh low, while average yields on junk-rated debt, dominated by builders, rose to a new high of 24.9%. Rising defaults in the much-larger onshore market also spurred higher stress levels, according to the tracker. Elsewhere, fourteen Chinese cities have loosened grips on home purchases in April, including some in the Yangtze River Delta that are popular among buyers. The easing of curbs comes as Chinese developer Sunac China Holdings Ltd. on missed its first payment since last year.
