Biden Sends Patriot Missiles To Slovakia As Replacement For Ukraine S-300 'Donation'
Following on the heels of NATO member Slovakia announcing it would transfer a sophisticated anti-air missile system to Ukraine, namely the Russian made S-300, the White House announced it would replace Slovakia's "donated" weapon system with a Patriot missile defense system.
Joe Biden in an afternoon statement said, "I have directed my administration to continue to spare no effort to identify and provide to the Ukrainian military the advanced weapons capabilities it needs."
Biden said further, "I want to thank the Slovakian government for providing an S-300 air defence system to Ukraine, something [Ukrainian] President [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy has personally raised with me in our conversations." To enable this transfer and ensure the continued security of Slovakia, the United States will reposition a US Patriot missile system to Slovakia."
It's an interesting arrangement which allows nearby Eastern European countries to get heavier weapons systems to Kiev faster, also allowing the US to remain less immediately involved in the transfer, though Moscow is likely to be incensed and provoked regardless. Last month there were reports that Poland could provide MiG fighters to Ukraine, and get them replaced with US F-16s - but the plan was shot down by the Pentagon as premature.
"I salute the generosity of the Slovak government in providing an S-300 air defense system to Ukraine. At my direction, and at the invitation of Slovakia, the U.S. will reposition one Patriot missile system, manned by our service members, to Slovakia". https://t.co/0exeGooH8j — Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III (@SecDef) April 8, 2022
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin indicated the US-manned the Patriot battery should arrive in Slovakia within "the coming days".

DWAC continuing to give bull trap lessons today-down-1.72 or 3.58% =17 and was green for less than 15 minutes today. Dunno if tha 17 means anything but there.
Black dots on Cap#2 also way below avg. volume on all three with the SP500 just barely over half of avg-also big uptick in volume in last few minutes on all three majores-just not as visible on NAS because of the big blocks earlier. Anyone 'holding' over the weekend is a complete nutjob.
Even Morgan Stanley sees the Softank scenario playing out nao-yer a little late but at least 'at' the party-and this is just backing up what has been reported in here for a while but they get "paid" to do this ...I don't
One potential culprit - as reported over the weekend - was the ongoing liquidation of Softbank's "Nasdaq Whale", the SB Northstar unit which was behind the historic August 2020 meltup in stocks when its management team consisting of former Deutsche Bank traders sparked a marketwide gamma squeeze. Well, in an ironic twist, it may very well be the case that the recent crash in tech stocks was the result of Softbank's unwind. So whether due to frontrunning of Softbank or for any other reason, Morgan Stanley's Prime Brokers notes that Hedge Funds sold more longs and added to shorts last week, taking net leverage down 3 points to 45% (just the 14th percentile since 2010), or as the bank puts it, "Pure defense... it’s been a combination of consistent long selling in single names (mostly within TMT):"

As we have previously explained - the broad Equities de-risking signal is not curve inversions (although it is a critical part of the overall sequencing, of course)... but instead, is when we get the steepening after inversion. This pivot from “bear-flattening” / inversion into “steepening” tells you that the market has “smelled the recession,” rushing to price-OUT Fed HIKES and instead, price-IN Fed EASING thereafter, unwinding that hard “bear-flattening” we’ve been immersed within on the “tightening” policy pivot.

Interest-Rate Surge Ripples Through Economy, From Homes to Car Loans
The market is finally getting the message that the era of cheap money is ending. Just look at mortgage rates. At the beginning of 2022, the average interest rate on a 30-year mortgage hovered above 3%. Today it stands at 4.72%, according to Freddie Mac . That translates into sharply higher borrowing costs for Americans looking to buy a homeand it is only the beginning.

Citigroup's stock set to produce 'bullish engulfing' pattern at a time of 'bullish technical divergence'
Citigroup Inc.'s stock C, +1.70% rose in afternoon trading, reversing an intraday loss of as much as 0.4%, putting it on track to produce a "bullish engulfing" candlestick chart pattern that many technicians believe precedes a trend reversal. On Thursday, the stock had opened at $50.56 then closed at a 17-month low of $50.03. On Friday, the stock opened at $49.84 then rallied to trade recently at $51.05, to completely engulf the previous session's open-close range. When this pattern appears at the low of a significant downtrend, many believes it suggests bulls have taken control. This comes at a time of bullish technical divergence, as lows in the Relative Strength Index, a momentum indicator, over the past month have risen from 24.30 on March 8 to 24.92 on Thursday even as the stock's price lows have decreased from $54.87 on March 8 to $50.03 on Thursday, another sign that momentum may be swinging to the bulls. The stock has dropped 15.5% year to date, while the S&P 500 SPX, -0.27% has slipped 5.6%. Citigroup is slated to report first-quarter earnings before the April 14 open.

What Is a Bullish Engulfing Pattern?
A bullish engulfing pattern is a white candlestick that closes higher than the previous day's opening after opening lower than the previous day's close. It can be identified when a small black candlestick, showing a bearish trend, is followed the next day by a large white candlestick, showing a bullish trend, the body of which completely overlaps or engulfs the body of the previous day’s candlestick.

Japan to expel eight Russians, including diplomats, as Kishida announces new sanctions
In a surprise move, Japan announced Friday it will expel eight Russian diplomats and trade representatives, a significant policy change that will likely prompt a similar move from Moscow. The Foreign Ministry made the announcement ahead of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s news conference apparently to soften how the news will be received in Moscow. During the news conference Friday evening, Kishida did not speak at length about the expulsion of the diplomats, merely saying that Japan made the decision after “comprehensive judgment.” Kishida, however, announced a sweeping new round of sanctions, declaring that Japan will phase out imports of Russian coal, ban imports of Russian machinery, lumber and vodka, bar new investments in Russia and freeze assets held by major Russian lenders Sberbank and Alfa Bank. Japan will also freeze the assets of an additional 400 or so military personnel and lawmakers and some 20 military-related organizations, including state-run companies, Kishida said.
But keeping the LNG project..... >>132135 pb Japan will not abandon Sakhalin-2 LNG stake, PM Kishida says
Compared to some Western countries, Japan had been taking a milder stance against Russia on energy-related sanctions, partly because of its dependence on imports of fuel. But with mass killings of civilians in Bucha and other Ukrainian cities being met with international condemnation, Japan apparently felt it needed to harden its position further to be in line with its allies. The latest measures are to hold Russia accountable for "cruel, inhumane" acts following its invasion of Ukraine, Kishida said, adding that Russia has committed "war crimes that are absolutely unforgivable." Earlier in the day, Vice Foreign Minister Takeo Mori summoned Russian Ambassador to Japan Mikhail Galuzin to notify him of Tokyo’s decision to expel eight Russians working at the embassy and the Trade Representation of the Russian Federation in Japan. Galuzin is not among those being expelled.
Following Japan’s latest announcement, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a news conference that Moscow will consider retaliatory measures. Moscow is expected to expel Japanese diplomats in kind. Western countries including the United States, Germany and France have already expelled Russian diplomats and embassy workers, with the number totaling 325. While a steady stream of expulsions followed Russia’s initial invasion of Ukraine in February, the exposure of severe human rights abuses in the wider Kyiv region prompted a further 206 expulsions since Monday alone.

Dear Japan:
EU Countries On Global Hunt for Coal as Russian Ban Looms
Thermal coal imports from Colombia totalled 1.3 million tonnes in March, rising by 47.3% year-on-year, Braemar data showed.
Imports from the U.S. in March totalled 809,000 tonnes, rising by 30.3% year-on-year and at their highest level since October 2019.
Imports from South Africa also picked up with 287,000 tonnes arriving in March versus no shipments in March last year.
Australia has also found renewed buying interest from Europe, with thermal coal imports totalling 537,000 tonnes in the first quarter of this year, versus no shipments over the same period in 2021, Braemar said.
But Indonesia and Australia, among the world’s top coal exporters, have hit their production limits and are unlikely to meet Europe’s demand for additional supplies if the European Union bans Russian coal imports, mining executives said.
https://gcaptain.com/europe-global-coal-hunt-russia-sanctions/
Ships Sail For South African Coal After Russia Sanctions
Europe’s surging demand for coal is reviving an infrequent trade lane for shipments from South African mines.
The fossil fuel typically heads east from Richards Bay Coal Terminal, the continent’s biggest export hub. Of the 59 million tons of coal shipped from the South African port last year, only 4% went to Europe and more than 86% was delivered to Asia.
There may have been a shift in that balance since Feb. 20 as a handful of bulk carriers have headed west round the Cape of Good Hope after calling at Richards Bay, according to ship tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.
https://gcaptain.com/ships-south-africa-coal-russia-sanctions/
Let's do some figuring here:
Australia & Indonesia maxed out on production. EU coal prices sky rocketing so South Africa selling for Euros and not weakened Yen more attractive by the day. Colombia should hit capacity fairly quick as EU orders pour in. The Resident is continuing Hussein's polcy or destroying American energy production, oil, gas, and oh yes coal mining so expect US decreasing outputs to go to EU, none left for you..
No buying from North Korea because of the sanctions already on them, but NK is heating/power coal, not quality enough for steel making. Canada is on the same track as US coal-wise, demonized the stuff so rgulate out of production to make Greta happy.
I calculate not enough coal for anything, gas, if you can get any (again, US production going down and heading for EU anyway) more expensive than coal. Liberals are absolutely against nuclear powewr and would pitch fits if any new nuke plants were to be proposed. Then solar panels on alll city rooves are fine, until typhoon season and clouds mess those up. Wind turbines all around the coasts mean fishing boats can't work and all kinds of bad can happen to them anyway. Not enough open land for the turbines and panels.
Result of calculations: You are screwed.

IMF Creates New Account to Help Ukraine as Canada Pledges Funds
The International Monetary Fund is establishing a new account designed to give donor nations a secure way to provide support to stabilize Ukraine’s economy after Russia’s invasion.
The IMF board of directors approved the move on Friday, the institution said in a statement. The account would receive loan or grant resources from donors in either reserve currencies or special drawing rights, the IMF’s reserve asset, and disburse support into Ukraine’s account at the fund, the institution said. The so-called “administered account” is set to allow interested countries to pool and to channel resources to help Ukraine meet balance-of-payments and budget needs arising from the war while supporting macroeconomic stability. Bloomberg News earlier this week reported the IMF’s plans to create the account. “Donors will benefit from the IMF’s tested infrastructure to quickly deliver authenticated payments,” the fund said.
The government of Canada proposed in its recent budget has proposed up to CAD 1 billion ($795 million) to be disbursed through the account, and it will be available for any other IMF members or intergovernmental agencies and organizations that wish to use it as a vehicle to provide financial assistance to Ukraine, the IMF said. The IMF last month approved a $1.4 billion emergency loan for Ukraine designed to help the country. The Washington-based fund warned that the recession could eventually be in the range of 25% to 35%, based on data about real-time contractions in other nations ravaged by war. The support also comes amid a slew of international efforts to bolster Ukraine’s budget and raise money for both its armed forces and civilians. The Ministry of Finance has raised about $1.2 billion through the sale of domestic war bonds since the invasion started. It has separately received support from institutions and governments including the European Union and the World Bank.
