On 14 June 2026, Swiss citizens will vote on the popular initiative: ‘No to a Switzerland with 10 million! (Sustainability Initiative)’.

The initiative in brief

At the end of 2025, approximately 9.1 million people were living in Switzerland. Since the introduction of the free movement of persons in 2002, the population has grown by around 1.7 million. This is mainly due to immigration. The number of people immigrating depends primarily on the labour market. When the economy is strong, companies struggle to find enough workers within Switzerland. Companies, as well as public institutions like hospitals and care homes, often recruit the skilled workers they need from the EU.

The ‘No to a Switzerland with 10 million! (Sustainability Initiative)’ calls for a cap on the permanent resident population: Switzerland’s population must remain below 10 million until 2050. If the permanent resident population exceeds 9.5 million before 2050, the Federal Council and Parliament will need to take measures, particularly in the areas of asylum and family reunification. The Federal Council would also need to invoke or negotiate exemptions and safeguard clauses in international agreements that contribute to population growth. If the 10-million threshold is exceeded, Switzerland would have to terminate these agreements, including the one with the EU on the free movement of persons after two years. This would also render the other agreements under Bilateral Agreements I null and void. Switzerland’s participation in the EU’s Schengen and Dublin agreements would also be called into question,thereby jeopardising close cooperation in the areas of security and asylum.

Obama reveals $100 million HIV research initiative

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama announced a new initiative at the National Institutes of Health in pursuit of a cure for HIV, saying his administration is redirecting $100 million into the project to find a new generation of therapies.

"The United States should be at the forefront of new discoveries into how to put HIV into long-term remission without requiring lifelong therapies, or better yet, eliminate it completely," Obama said.

Obama made the announcement Monday at a White House event marking World AIDS Day, which was Sunday _ and as health leaders and philanthropists gathered in Washington to determine how to replenish the major global health fund that combats AIDS and two of the world's other leading killers in low-income countries.

Obama pledged that the U.S. would contribute up to $5 billion over the next three years to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria _ as long as other countries do their part and contribute $10 billion. The U.S. matches contributions to the Geneva-based Global Fund on a 1-to-2 funding ratio set by Congress.

"Don't leave our money on the table," Obama said Monday.

The Global Fund is trying to raise $15 billion to cover its programs from 2014 to 2016. The fund supports HIV therapy for more than 5 million people, as well as treatments for tuberculosis and malaria, and the distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets.

Also Monday,billionaire Bill Gates said he planned to nearly double his foundation's contribution to this next round of the Global Fund, to $500 million. Gates had already pledged $300 million, but told a small group of reporters at the National Institutes of Health that he would match an additional $200 million from private sources in an effort to draw in new donors.

Gates donned a biohazard suit and respirator for a close-up look at how NIH scientists are hunting new therapies for increasingly drug-resistant tuberculosis. He emerged from the laboratory energized about promising candidates _ but with a sober message for policymakers: Defeating global killers like TB and AIDS requires adequate funding of both the delivery of today's treatments and the research required for better ones.

"We're deeply disappointed" in cuts to the NIH's budget, Gates said.

Earlier this year, NIH lost $1.5 billion of its $31 billion budget to automatic spending cuts known as the sequester, after years of budgets that didn't keep up with inflation. NIH is scheduled to lose another $600 million from a second round of sequester cuts set to take effect next month. That in turn limits how much the NIH can devote to different diseases.

"Investing in research has huge paybacks," Gates said.

Asked how she coped while Glover traveled hundreds of thousands of miles from Earth, Maxwell credited her faith.

“God is the center of our life, and that keeps me rooted and grounded,” she said. “But those fears, because he’s my child, they’re in there. I stay on my knees, and I pray a lot.”

Glover said family support has been critical throughout his career, from his childhood in Southern California to his latest mission around the moon.

“It was everything,” he said. “My mom and my dad both supported me fully, and I felt that support my entire life.”

Glover, who logged 178 days on the International Space Station before being tapped for Artemis II, described training for the lunar mission as unlike anything NASA had prepared crews for before.

With no existing playbook for a crewed deep-space flight, his team was developing procedures and training protocols simultaneously while also preparing the public for what was coming.

“We put as much time into being good teammates, just working together the best that we could, as we did in learning to fly the spaceship,” Glover said.

The night before launch, he said, he slept well. Pre-mission tradition includes what the crew calls the “ultimate dinner,” not a last dinner, a concession to superstition, where astronauts choose their own meal, prepared by chefs in quarantine.

Glover had lamb chops, spinach and sweet potatoes, the same meal he chose before his first spaceflight.

The 10-day mission covered a 680,000-mile round trip, reaching a maximum distance of 252,756 miles from Earth.

Glover described re-entry at Mach 39.5, nearly 40 times the speed of sound, with a panoramic window view of the fireball surrounding the capsule.

He said he stayed focused on what he might need to do if something went wrong, and was largely at peace.

During the 45-minute communications blackout as the crew passed behind the moon, Glover said they paused briefly, shared maple cookies from Canada, and went back to work, recording lunar surface observations before the Earth reappeared in the window.

“When the earth set behind the moon, we said some nice words to the earth, and then we went right back to work,” he said.

On the broader experience of traveling that far from home, Glover said space functions as a catalyst for perspectives already inside you.

Looking out at the moon against deep space, with Earth small and vivid in the distance, he said the contrast is difficult to explain to someone who hasn’t seen it.

“The earth is an anomaly,” he said. “You look out in the universe and you see that those pictures of the moon up close with the earth kind of hanging off way in the distance — one looks inviting, it’s colorful, it looks like special effects put into a movie. The rest of this looks like nothing.”

Glover’s visit to Southern California this week includes a stop at Ontario High School Friday morning, a trip up the coast to Cal Poly, where he and his wife met and where several of his four daughters are currently students, and events in the Sacramento area, including a visit to NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View.

NATO’s answer in January 2025 was Baltic Sentry, a standing patrol of frigates, aircraft and naval drones dedicated to watching the seabed. It mostly worked.

The region went quiet for nearly a year, until December 31, 2025, when Finnish police boarded the cargo ship Fitburg, en route from Russia to Israel, on suspicion of anchor-dragging a telecom cable between Helsinki and Estonia.

Apparently the Finnish special forces have stopped taking New Year’s Eve off. No court has issued a final ruling on any of these cases, and the operators have generally denied wrongdoing, but the operational pattern is consistent enough that nobody in a NATO uniform treats it as coincidence anymore.

Russian submarines never left the neighborhood

Anchors are only half of the Baltic’s underwater problem, and frankly the easier half, because a tanker on the surface is visible to anyone with a radar. Submarines are the other half.

On April 10, 2026, Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighters intercepted a Russian Kilo-class submarine transiting the Kattegat toward the Baltic and tracked it in coordination with allied forces, according to a Swedish Armed Forces press release.

With Sweden and Finland inside NATO since 2024 and 2023, a Russian boat now gets watched from the moment it enters the corridor, handed off between coastal radar, ships and aircraft like a package with tracking enabled.

Transiting in international waters is perfectly legal, and nobody alleges otherwise.

The concern, as Army Recognition frames it, is that rising Russian submarine activity overlaps with a seabed full of fragile, expensive infrastructure that has already been damaged repeatedly.

Drones like the Iver3 feed into distributed underwater sensing networks designed to detect and track exactly this kind of activity. A robot that loiters below the surface for hours does not get tired, does not need a galley, and does not show up on anyone’s deck-watching photos.

So the surveillance gap that submarines have exploited for a century is quietly shrinking.

BALTOPS turned 55, and the robots are the new kids

The exercise hosting all this is no pop-up. BALTOPS has run annually since 1972, and the 55th edition kicked off on June 4 when some 20 NATO ships departed Gdynia, Poland, per the US Navy.

Fifteen allied nations are taking part through June 19, under the command of the US Sixth Fleet together with STRIKFORNATO, drilling the classics: submarine hunting, mine clearance, air defense and amphibious landings.

What is new is the doctrine layered on top, with dedicated uncrewed units treated as core capability rather than science fair projects.

And the shopping spree backs it up. The same Navy flying Iver3s off Latvia just took delivery of the Australian-built Speartooth drone submarine, a long-range strike and surveillance machine that ships inside a standard commercial container.

The AUKUS pact, fresh off its latest restructuring, quietly funded a whole program of seabed drone payloads aimed squarely at protecting cables and pipelines.

Canada’s defense agency, meanwhile, owns a hydrogen-powered drone that parks itself on the seabed for 16 days to stare at a single cable junction.

Three different programs, three different navies, one conclusion: the seafloor stopped being neutral ground, and everyone is buying robots for it.

The week that mattered was a boring one

Nothing exploded off Liepaja, no cable was cut during the exercise, and the most dramatic published image is a few sailors in a small boat lifting a six-foot yellow tube out of gray water.

That is sort of the point. The contest for the Baltic seabed has so far been fought with anchors, ambiguity and deniability, and the counter to ambiguity is not a bigger torpedo.

It is a fresh, accurate map and someone checking it every day. A week of drone runs off Latvia buys exactly that: yesterday’s seabed picture, so that the next “whoops, my anchor” finally has a witness. The witness runs on batteries and fits in a pickup bed.

FBI Seattle Announces 'No Drone Zones' for FIFA World Cup 2026™

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has established a “No Drone Zone” for FIFA World Cup 2026.

Unsafe and improper use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) or drones poses a physical hazard to other aircraft and individuals on the ground and can violate federal law. 

The FBI is working with the FAA to enforce temporary flight restrictions (TFRs), using federally authorized capabilities to detect, track, and assess unauthorized drone activity, with personnel from both agencies deployed full-time to identify drone activity that could threaten aviation safety, critical infrastructure, or public safety at and around event venues.

FBI Seattle, together with our partners from Seattle Police Department, King County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol, the Port of Seattle, and DHS agencies, including the Federal Air Marshal Service, have developed a new public service announcement, emphasizing the importance of drone operators checking for active flight restrictions.

One-minute and 30-second versions of the public service announcement are available for download.

TFRs will be in place for all U.S. match venues and associated event sites. In Seattle, the TFRs will cover Seattle Stadium (Lumen Field) and a radius of 3 miles around the stadium.

The TFRs will be in place 3 hours before the match until 3 hours after the conclusion of the match on the following dates:

Spencer Pratt has blamed his political rivals for a huge blaze which broke out at his California crystal business.

The fire erupted at Pratt's company office in the Pacific Palisades late Thursday afternoon, the California Post reported.

Multiple units with the Los Angeles Fire Department rushed to the building, located inside the Highlands Circle complex on Palisades Drive and battled the flames.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

But Pratt, who was booted out of the Los Angeles mayoral race just days ago, claimed the fire was 'very suspicious.'

He told the Post that he thinks it was started because of 'contentious election tomfoolery.'

'I want to be careful not to compromise an arson investigation, but this incident is very suspicious.

Then-National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Dr. Francis Collins, around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, acknowledged that he secretly assisted with a paper stating the virus that causes COVID-19 "is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus," according to a newly released missive.

"This is work that Tony, Jeremy, Larry, and I helped with, but are appropriately not mentioned explicitly in the paper," Collins said in the March 6, 2020, email to NIH officials, which was released by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on June 11.

Tony refers to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the longtime head of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases through late 2022. Jeremy refers to Jeremy Farrar, at the time the director of the Wellcome Trust. Larry refers to Dr. Lawrence Tabak, an NIH official.

Collins noted the conclusion that stated, "The analysis of public genome sequence data from SARS-CoV-2 and related viruses found no evidence that the virus was made in a laboratory or otherwise engineered." SARS-CoV-2 is the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

The first COVID-19 cases appeared in Wuhan, China, in 2019, near a laboratory that was conducting enhanced experiments on coronaviruses funded by the NIH.

Collins was responding to an email from Kristian Andersen, one of the authors of the paper, which was titled "The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2." Andersen and other scientists said in the paper, published on March 17, 2020, in Nature Medicine, that they analyzed data and concluded that it came from nature.

To date, no natural source has been identified for the virus. The Trump administration maintains the virus came from the Wuhan lab.

The paper did not mention any contributions from Collins, Fauci, Tabak, or Farrar, who made at least one critical change to the document, according to emails released by lawmakers in 2023. It thanked American virologist Michael Farzan "for discussions" and the Wellcome Trust "for support." Nature did not return a request for comment by the time of publication. Collins did not respond to a request for comment.

Collins told lawmakers in 2024 that his role "was for information, not for me to edit," that he never edited or suggested edits to the paper, and that, to his knowledge, neither did Fauci or Farrar. He also said he is not a virology expert.

69 Arrested In 'Operation Hands Down' Targeting Central California Gangs

Authorities announced dozens of arrests, drug and firearm seizures, and thousands of dollars in cash confiscated in a large-scale operation targeting gangs in California's Central Valley.

The multi-agency effort, dubbed Operation Hands Down, served 43 search warrants at various locations throughout the San Joaquin Valley, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) stated in a June 10 press release.

More than 500 law enforcement members joined the operation, leading to 69 arrests and the confiscation of 73 guns, 55 pounds of methamphetamine, 3 pounds of cocaine, a small amount of powdered fentanyl, and nearly $165,000.

"This marked the culmination of a two-month undercover operation focusing on Mexican Mafia and Sureño gang members committing various crimes," the CDCR stated.

The arrests are expected to lower the amount of gang violence seen across the Central Valley, the department added.

Among those arrested was Stefan Coronado from Stockton, California, who was identified as a secretary for the Mexican Mafia, Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni said during a press conference.

Coronado allegedly oversaw criminal street gang activity within the Fresno County Jail from around 2023 to early 2026, including collecting taxes from inmates, facilitating communications between gang members, and acting as a Mexican mafia representative to influence the Sureño gang.

Police also arrested Eduardo Roberto Garcia, a suspect believed to be a high-ranking and influential Sureño gang member associated with the Mexican Mafia, who is now facing murder charges, Zanoni said.

Zanoni said Garcia is also being charged with assault in a previous case in which he allegedly attacked a female bartender in the city of Sanger and rendered her unconscious. The incident was captured on surveillance camera, according to Zanoni.

"It highlights the violent nature of Garcia and his gang activities," said Zanoni. "The investigation significantly disrupted organized Sureño criminal street gang activity throughout Central California while exposing the continued influence of the Mexican Mafia over both street-level criminal operations and violence occurring within our custodial facilities."

Additionally, eight Sureño gang members currently being held in the Fresno County Jail have been charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and gang enhancements for their alleged involvement in two separate stabbing attacks inside the facility, he said.

US withdraws long-range military capabilities from NATO

The move comes at a particularly tense moment, with US Donald Trump increasingly angry at NATO allies over their refusal to join his war on Iran.

The US is planning to withdraw access to deep strike capabilities for NATO allies as part of its wider plan to pull out of Europe's security architecture.

The Trump administration informed NATO allies last year it would cut military assets available to Europe even during times of war or invasion, but until now, the details of exactly how the Pentagon intends to scale back access to such assets were unclear.

According to sources, everything linked to deep strike capabilities will be cut, Euronews has learned. Specifically, this includes US long-range bombers such as the B2 and B-52. Naval assets, including missile-launching submarine and aircraft carriers, will also be withdrawn and re-directed to other theatres.

According to reporting from the New York Times, the US is also planning on reducing the number of F-16 and F-15E fighter jets available to NATO from roughly 150 to 100 and maritime reconnaissance aircraft from 26 to 15, as well as withdrawing all eight aerial refuelling tanker jets previously available to Europe.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Friday announced that she is declassifying evidence of US-funded biolabs and gain-of-function research around the world as one of her final acts before stepping down as DNI.

“After months of searching through intelligence community holdings and files, today I’m releasing longstanding US government funding of more than 120 bio labs in over 30 countries,” including Ukraine, she said in a video statement.

She said the labs in Ukraine “likely housed dangerous pathogens,” and the US Intelligence Community previously warned that they were at risk of compromise due to the ongoing war.

“Until now, evidence regarding the full existence and funding of these laboratories had been knowingly withheld from you, the American people,” Gabbard said. “Many of these US government-funded bio labs are currently or have previously engaged in research using hazardous and highly contagious pathogens, and in some cases included dangerous gain-of-function research with very little visibility or oversight.”

“We’re learning new details, for example, on clinical trials that are underway at these facilities, and that are raising significant ethical, financial, and security concerns regarding the supposed public health initiatives and US national security. Now, despite the obvious potential for catastrophic global impact that research on dangerous pathogens in biolabs can have, politicians, so-called health professionals like Dr. Fauci, as well as entities within the Biden administration’s national security team, lied repeatedly to the American people about the existence of US-funded and supported biolabs,” she added.

Gabbard previously said her office was working with NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to investigate whether the United States funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology that caused the COVID-19 pandemic. In April, former Anthony Fauci advisor David Morens, who oversaw gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses in Wuhan, was indicted on charges of conspiracy against the United States; destruction, alteration, or falsification of records in federal investigations; concealment, removal, or mutilation of records; and aiding and abetting.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence published declassified documents, detailing US concerns with Ukrainian biolabs amid the Russia-Ukraine war, US funding and building of labs in Ukraine, and the diseases, including highly infectious viruses, that the US paid Ukrainian scientists to study.

Kirill Dmitriev, Russian presidential special representative for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries and CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), recalled that reports about US biological laboratories had long been dismissed despite later acknowledgments from US officials.

"Russia has been telling the truth about biolabs while the deep state and legacy media denied it. One of many examples how Russia’s truth is obfuscated by the powerful and well-funded false narrative machine," Dmitriev wrote on X. He also called on Wikipedia to revise its article on biological laboratories in Ukraine, which describes the issue as a conspiracy theory.

Earlier, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said that research involving "dangerous pathogens" at US-run biological laboratories abroad could potentially lead to a global catastrophe. According to declassified materials, the United States helped establish more than 40 biological laboratories in Ukraine linked to the US defense industry.

The Pentagon said in June 2022 that the United States had supported 46 biological laboratories in Ukraine, maintaining that the cooperation was conducted for peaceful purposes. Russian authorities have repeatedly expressed concern about the activities of US-funded laboratories in Ukraine. Dmitriev argued that Gabbard's remarks effectively confirmed the validity of those concerns, noting that she had acknowledged the research conducted at such facilities carried an obvious potential for catastrophic global impact.
