Somalia Ends All Agreements With UAE, Ask It To Quickly Leave Country

Somalia has annulled all security and defense agreements with the United Arab Emirates citing alleged breaches of the country’s sovereignty, national unity, and political independence, the country’s Council of Ministers announced on January 12.

In a statement, the council said that the decision was taken based on “reports and strong evidence regarding wrongful actions that undermine the sovereignty, national unity, and political independence” of the Horn of Africa country.

All ministers agreed during a cabinet meeting to annul all agreements and cooperative arrangements with the UAE concerning the ports of Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo, the statement added, noting that the ministries also approved a draft law on protecting Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial unity, along with an arbitration bill.

The bill would bar regional administrations and private entities from entering into agreements with foreign parties without prior notification to, and approval from, the federal government and oversight by the relevant ministry, according to the statement.

Tensions between Somalia and the UAE began to rise last month when Israel recognized the breakaway region of Somaliland.

Abdu Dhabi, which cultivated deep economic and security ties in the northern Somali region in recent years, was suspected of playing a role in the Israeli decision.

The centrepiece of the UAE strategy in Somaliland is a $442 million investment by Dubai-based logistics company DP World to develop and operate the Port of Berbera.

The direct reason behind the Somali decision was, however, an investigation by the country’s Immigration and Citizenship Agency that was launched after the Saudi-led Arab Coalition in Yemen announced that the UAE had spirited a separatist leader out of Yemen via Somalia.

The coalition said last week that Aidarous al-Zubaidi, head of Yemen’s Southern Transitional Council, fled the southern Yemeni city of Aden by sea to Somaliland, before flying from there to Abu Dhabi. Somalia said at the time that if the allegation were proved true it would represent a serious violation of its sovereignty.

The UAE ignored the Somali announcement, but DP World said on January 13 its operations at Berbera port were continuing under existing agreements.

“DP World remains focused on the safe, efficient operation of the port and on delivering trade facilitation and economic benefits for Somaliland and the wider Horn of Africa region,” it said in a statement to Reuters, adding that questions on “political decisions, intergovernmental discussions, or diplomatic positions should be directed to the relevant authorities.”

Over 500 Ukrainian orphans abused in Türkiye

Recently, Donbass-based journalist Christelle Néant wrote about a report published on a pro-Ukrainian website which broke the story of 510 Ukrainian children who had been evacuated by a Ukrainian oligarch in 2022 from Dnepropetrovsk to Türkiye, where the benevolent foundation which brought them there allegedly allowed its staff to beat the children, sexually assault them, and deny them food if they refused to perform on camera to raise funds for their lodging. These are just some of the reported violations of the orphans’ rights.

The details of the report show that the children suffered physically and psychologically. Additionally, two underage teens were impregnated by staff at the hotel they stayed in, with educators allegedly aware of the interactions.

According to Néant, the orphanage director’s response to the fact of one of the teens in her care becoming pregnant was to blame the girl: “This young girl comes from an asocial family. Well, this way of life is already inscribed in every cell, in the blood of these children.”

“In almost 10 years of work in Donbass,” Néant wrote, “I have conducted or filmed many humanitarian missions to orphanages in the region.

And never ever have I heard a director make such vile remarks about one of the children in her care. Even the most difficult and recalcitrant were cared for with pedagogy, love, and patience.”

Ukraine hunting down children

In April 2023, Christelle Néant and I interviewed Artyomovsk civilians who had recently been rescued by Russian soldiers.

In addition to being deliberately shelled by Ukrainian forces who knew they were sheltering in the basement of a residential building, the civilians we spoke to told us about Ukrainian military police hunting for children.

The evacuees told us some of these police went by the name ‘White Angels’, and were taking childrenaway without their consent or that of their parents.

Around that time, more reports came out about these abductions or attempted abductions, including an 11-year-old girl who spoke of how White Angels, who introduced themselves as military police, came to the basement she was sheltering in with a photo of her, looking for her, and saying they needed to take her away, because “Russia killed her mother.” According to the girl, her mother was alive and with her.

Reports of these abductions also emerged in Avdeyevka, Kupyansk, Slavyansk, Chasov Yar and Konstantinovka, as well as in Ukrainsk and Zhelannoye.

Néant wrote of a July 2023 conference on Ukraine’s crimes against the Donbass children, in which Liliya and her daughter Kira from Schastye, in the Lugansk People’s Republic, spoke.

They gave evidence of how, “at the start of the special military operation (when Ukraine controlled Schastye), around ten children were taken from a school in Schastye to western Ukraine by the headmistress of the school, on orders from Kiev, without informing their parents.”

The children were even forbidden to call their parents, Néant wrote, “But Kira knew her mother’s telephone number by heart and managed to call her to let her know that they were in Lviv and then Khoust.

Thanks to Liliya’s determination to find her daughter, we discovered how Kiev ‘exports’ the children it abducts.” Ukraine had forged a new “original” birth certificate for Kira. The girl said she and the other children were to be sent to Poland.

Former SBU officer Vasily Prozorov spoke at the same conference, where he explained, according to Néant, “that one of his investigations had revealed that some of the children abducted by Ukraine are sent to pedophile networks in Great Britain, via a whole network of Ukrainian and British officials or former officials who work together.

On the British side, members of MI6 and the Foreign Office are involved.”

Prozorov, she wrote, spoke of “another of his investigations on organizations registered in EU countries involved in ‘exporting’ children from Ukraine under the pretext of providing them with shelter.

These organizations take unaccompanied Ukrainian children out of Ukraine. What happens to them afterwards is unknown.”

Evacuees from Kherson reject ‘abduction’ claims

In November 2022, in the southern Russian seaside city Anapa, I met numerous people displaced from Kherson who were being lodged in hotels and apartments in the city.

The first site I visited was a few minutes by taxi outside of the city, one of many hotels along the coast. The hotel director showing me around said they don’t call them refugees, “we call them guests of the building,” and spoke affectionately of them, how grateful they were to be there, far from any shelling. Just under 500 refugees had been living there since October, she told me.

No guards monitored the entrance/exit; the refugees walked around tidy grounds. But in any case, I asked about their freedom of movement, or lack thereof.

“They move freely, of course. We don’t prohibit them from going out. Many aren’t here now because they’re in town, looking for jobs, getting documents. Children are at school.”

With my hired translator, I spoke with two Kherson women, a young mother and her own mother, to hear their stories.

“We were living with explosions at night, it was very scary, not only for myself, but for my children and for my grandchildren,” the older woman said. “When you go to bed, you don’t know if you will get out of bed in the morning. We were forced to leave.”

I asked who was shelling them. “Word of mouth transmits very clearly, and people around us spoke about it. We were bombed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Russian soldiers protected us.”

The younger woman said she used to speak with the Russian soldiers there. “They are friendly. We wanted to hug them, because we felt protected. They helped us, gave us humanitarian aid, brought it to the house.”

Some minutes’ taxi ride away, I visited an apartment complex that could have served tourists in summer. There, fifty buildings housed around 1,500 refugees who had also arrived in October, mostly from Kherson Region.

My translator and I walked around, passing playgrounds, a pharmacy, a library, a swimming pool, a gym, a small petting zoo with peacocks, and a kindergarten. Near a playground, I spoke with a mother sitting on a bench with two of her four children.

“In the early days, there was bombing. We spent two and a half weeks in the basement. It was unbearable, the children were very afraid.” One of her daughters became ill. “She had acute inflammation of the lower jaw, we think due to hypothermia. We took her to Simferopol and she had surgery.”

In Anapa, she said, her children hadfull medical examinations. “We were helped by the mayor of the city of Anapa. We are grateful for everything.”

I mentioned that according to Western media, she and her family were kidnapped by Russia. She replied that her husband’s parents had demanded to see the children, having been told that children were being separated from their parents in Russia.

“His mother called three days in a row, saying, ‘Where are the children?’ We answered, ‘They went to the cinema. They’re playing, etc.’ She said, ‘Show me the children, they say that they took your children from you.’”

Details matter

Whereas legacy media continue to push the “Evil Russia child kidnapper” narrative, there is ample evidence that Ukraine is guilty of doing precisely what it accuses Russia of.

The is also a significant absence of evidence regarding the ‘20,000 kidnapped children’ claims still being pushed.

Will media investigate the reports of abuse of Ukrainian children in Türkiye? Surely not. It wouldn’t suit their scripted anti-Russia bias.

After the Clintons on Tuesday refused to testify in the House Oversight Committee's probe into late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, committee Chairman James Comer said he would pursue contempt charges.

Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a letter posted on X that they do not plan to appear for their scheduled depositions this week.

The Supreme Court heard oral arguments Tuesday on whether state bans preventing transgender girls and women from competing in female school sports violate the Constitution.

"Today,my attorneysare arguing a crucial Supreme Court case pushing back against the trans agenda," Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote on X. "Our position: states have the authority to ban men from participating in women’s sports. This is common sense. We are fighting to protect girls and women in the locker room and on the playing field — and we will be successful." (You would think Bondi being a woman would have led the case there. If I was one of those women athletes, I'd consider that insulting. And if won, she'd love the limelight.)

The Supreme Court is considering a case that combines two separate cases from Idaho and West Virginia, Little v. Hecox and West Virginia v. B.P.J., involving transgender students Lindsay Hecox and Becky Pepper-Jackson, who were prohibited by state law from competing on girls’ sports teams.

The legal issue centers on whether state bans on transgender girls competing in girls' school sports violate Title IX's prohibition on sex discrimination in education or the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clauseby singling out transgender status instead of biological sex.

The High Court's conservative majority appears poised to hand a victory to the states.

During oral arguments, Associate Justice SamuelAlito pressed the attorney representing the transgender athletes, getting her to concede that a male simply declaring himself a woman is not enough to guarantee the right to compete on a girls’ sports team. In other words, demonstrating that barring a so-called transgender woman from the girls’ team constitutes discrimination based on transgender status, not just sex, undermines the argument that Title IX’s protections for “sex” automatically extend to gender identity. A key argument for those fighting to expand protections for "transgender" individuals.

The Court’s newest member, a liberal justice, fared far less impressively, delivering what could be described as a word salad, as Idaho Attorney General Michael Hurst struggled to answer her question in full.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet with a First Nations advocacy group Jan. 13 to discuss a potential oil pipeline from Alberta to the B.C. coast.

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson and Housing Minister Gregor Robertson will accompany Carney to Prince Rupert, B.C., for the meeting with the Coastal First Nations-Great Bear Initiative, a non-profit advocacy group that includes a number of members of B.C. coastal First Nations.

The meeting will be Hodgson and Carney’s first with the advocacy group, which opposes any lifting of the oil tanker ban on B.C.’s north coast and the construction of any oil pipeline to northern B.C. tidewater.

Ottawa signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Alberta on Nov. 27 proposing to build one or more pipelines from Alberta to B.C.’s north coast if a private proponent comes forward. The MOU also liftss various Trudeau-era energy regulations, along with “adjustments” to the oil tanker ban as necessary for a future pipeline.

In return, Alberta has pledged to increase its industrial carbon tax, reduce methane emissions, and put in place an extensive carbon capture system alongside the new pipeline.

For now, Alberta is acting as chief proponent in developing the pipeline proposal to carry 1 million barrels per day of crude oil to B.C.’s north coast for export to Asia.

Iranians are using Elon Musk’s Starlink service to share protest videos globally, despite government jamming and confiscation efforts.Iran has intensified efforts to jam Starlink, which is banned, leading authorities to search for and confiscate dishes in western Tehran.

The internet shutdown, implemented after protests over an economic crisis, has further affected Iranian businesses already facing sanctions and inflation.

Iranians are using Elon Musk’s Starlink service to share protest videos globally, despite government jamming and confiscation efforts.With the government shutting down the internet and throttling phone services, Iranians are leaning heavily on Elon Musk’s Starlink service to share videos of growing protests and the regime’s escalating crackdown with the world.

But Iran has intensified efforts to jam the service, which is banned in the country,and users are being hunted.

Over the weekend, authorities began searching for and confiscating Starlink dishes in western Tehran, said Amir Rashidi, director of digital rights and security at Miaan Group, a U.S. nonprofit opposed to internet censorship.

“It’s electronic warfare,”Rashidi said. He said disruptions are worst in parts of Tehran where protests are taking place and in the evening, when the demonstrators gather.

The battle over information—while secondary to the confrontations taking place nightly in dozens of cities across Iran—has potentially serious consequences. President Trump has threatened to intervene in response to a crackdown by the regime.

More than 500 people have been killed in the unrest, according to the group Human Rights Activists in Iran. Another rights group, Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, circulated video footage Sunday showing a large number of bodies at a morgue in south Tehran. SBA Investigating $1.2 Trillion On Payments As Part Of Fraud Probe: Loeffler

Federal officials are reviewing approximately $1.2 trillion in payouts to root out fraudsters, according to Kelly Loeffler, administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA).

“Federal contracting and the fraud that happens within it in Washington, D.C., around these programs are probably the worst kept secret in Washington,” Loeffler said during an interview with “American Thought Leaders” host Jan Jekielek.

She highlighted patterns of fraud impacting the government, including the widespread abuse of the SBA’s 8(a) business development programs that offer funding for small businesses, including education and child care organizations, revealed in Minnesota

“It’s a huge cost to the American people when these programs are defrauded,” Loeffler said. “So, we have a whole path, we’re cracking down on that.”

An investigation looking back 15 years will include audits—the first in the program’s 45-year history, according to the administrator.

Approximately 7,000 borrowers—representing about $400 million in fraudulent payouts—were suspended in Minnesota last year.

Fraud Spread Nationwide

Officials will next use the investigative framework “to go state by state” and identify illegitimate payouts that were “very much driven during COVID,” she said.

Businesses asked to reduce operations—or shut down entirely, in some instances—were negatively impacted during the pandemic, which Loeffler said necessitated federal intervention.

“It was devastating, and would have been even more devastating had that federal assistance not come out,” she said. “And most small businesses were legitimate and used it for good, kept their employees on the payroll, and made a huge difference locally.”

Others saw the influx of federal benefits as a chance to reap rewards, which, combined with limited oversight, led to widespread abuse of the program, she said.

“There’s a certain group of actors that saw opportunity in disaster and defrauded the government,” Loeffler said. “What we know now is they come back to the trough.”

President Joe Biden’s administration forgave thousands of loans that were flagged as potentially fraudulent, she noted.

“They were not ever further investigated,” Loeffler said. “Those cases were closed; those loans were being forgiven.”

Federal investigators are now reviewing each loan to determine if further action is warranted.

“No more sweeping this under the rug,” Loeffler said. “We’re going to hold people accountable.”

In one message Sunday, the government told people to rely on news from the Mehr agency, which is affiliated with the security services. Another text called on Iranians to join a pro-government demonstration Monday at the University of Tehran, a stronghold of recent protests. “The Iran government invites the people to join a demonstration in support of the regime and against US & Israel,” it said. The rest of the country relies on Starlink to send out footage of the demonstrations. “It is the only way,” said Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, co-founder of Iran Human Rights, both based in Norway. He said he received footage of protests in Mashhad, Iran’s second largest city by population.

A user in Tehran, who spoke to The Wall Street Journal through a Starlink connection early Sunday,said he had uploaded protest videos taken by relatives. He then sent them to third parties abroad who posted them on social media. People who have Starlinks don’t let it be known and only upload videos to people they trust, he said over his crackling and distorted Starlink connection.

The government’s efforts to interrupt the service have slowed down Starlink access but haven’t stopped it, said Mehdi Yahyanejad, co-founder and board director at NetFreedom Pioneers. The U.S. group helps people in authoritarian nations get access to the internet.When Iranian users get good connections, often in the morning or midday, they transmit as many videos as they can, Yahyanejad said.

Starlink terminals are illegal in Iran and had to be smuggled in, often on small boats from Dubai or across the border from Iraqi Kurdistan.They started to show up in big numbers at the end of the last big wave of protests in 2022, when Musk said his company would seek an exemption to sanctions for his terminals.

Yahyanejad said his organization, NetFreedom, sent thousands of Starlink kits to nonprofits in the country. Others were brought in via commercial intermediaries.

Iran has pushed the U.S. through the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations agency, to ban Starlink service within its territory.The U.S. and Starlink have resisted enforcing the ban beyond cutting off terminals identified by Iran.

The internet shutdown is deepening the economic crisis that triggered the protests.Businesses in Iran—already struggling with sanctions, inflation and now widespread strikes—have been hit by the loss of online services and the frequent interruption of domestic calls, Iranians abroad who have spoken to their contacts in Iran said.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez declared Sunday that the island nation would defend itself “to the last drop of blood,” responding to pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to strike a deal with Washington.

President Trump had spoken about Cuba in a Truth Social post earlier in the day, urging that “they make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is warning that the federal government is about to crack down on migrant welfare recipients who send money overseas — and BlazeTV host Sara Gonzales is shocked that it was ever allowed in the first place.

“And from now on, anyone who wires money out from one of these money service businesses has to check a box saying whether they are on public assistance. And if you are on public assistance, we are going to start pushing that you cannot wire money out of the country,” Bessent told Laura Ingraham on Fox News.

“Well, what if they lie and they don’t tell us they’re on public assistance?” Ingraham asked. “That’s a crime, lying on a federal form.”

“We’re going to follow it up, and we are going to push that you can no longer do that. The American people, our generosity has been taken advantage of,” he responded.

“Our generosity is funding al-Shabaab and Iranian interests. ... This is really bad,” Ingraham chimed in.

“The money is supposed to go for alleged asylum seekers and their families and children, and if you were wiring the money out of the country, one of two things must be true: You are getting too much money and your benefits should be cut, or you are part of this conspiracy,” Bessent said firmly.

“If the federal taxpayers are paying for you to live here, you’re not allowed to send their money. It’s not even your money. Their money, my money, you’re not allowed to send overseas. That should not be controversial at all,” Gonzales comments on “Sara Gonzales Unfiltered.”

“If you are so broke that you need taxpayer dollars, you are not allowed to send it overseas. You’re not allowed to send it to your family overseas. You’re not allowed to send it to terror groups overseas. You’re not allowed to send it to anybody overseas,” she continues.

And the amount of immigrants receiving benefits from taxpaying American citizens is not a small number.

“You’ve got over half of immigrant-headed households that receive cash, food, medical care, or housing benefits from taxpayers. Over half, according to the Center for Immigration Studies,” Gonzales says.

“We know that over half of these people are taking more than they are bringing to the table,” she continues, pointing out that money sent or brought back by migrants is “almost three times as much as global foreign aid.”

“Look at that chart: 822 billion versus 288 billion in foreign aid. ... This is just these people coming here, taking from us, and then sending it back home or sending it to their favorite terror group,” she adds.

Iran FM calls riots ‘Daesh-style crimes,’ extension of US-Israeli war

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described the recent riots targeting Iran as atrocities resembling those committed by the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group, saying they marked a continuation of the US’s and the Israeli regime’s imposed war against the country in June.

The top diplomat made the remarks on Tuesday during an online meeting with the Islamic Republic’s ambassadors to the European Union’s member states.

Araghchi reiterated his earlier condemnation of Washington’s and Tel Aviv’s interference in Iran’s internal affairs, referring to the allies’ providing riotous elements with arms, intelligence, and logistical support to try to divert economic protests across the country towards unrest.

He described the goal sought by the riots as weakening and destabilizing of the country, while expressing gratitude towards Iranian security forces for restoring calm by successfully confronting the perpetrators.

The foreign minister also thanked the Iranian nation for staging millions-strong demonstrations throughout the nation on Monday in support of the country’s Islamic establishment and condemnation of the foreign meddling.

He also emphasized the importance of Europe-based Iranian diplomats’ accurately portraying the atrocious nature of the recent terrorist activities targeting the nation to local governments, the Iranian diaspora, and public opinion.

The comments came after riot ringleaders and operatives under their directorship sought to hijack the protests that had begun in late December.

Also on Monday, Araghchi verified during a meeting with Tehran-based diplomats that recordings had proven how these elements had been trying to cause as many casualties as possible to try to pave the way for renewed foreign aggression against the Iranian territory as threatened recently by US President Donald Trump.

Iranian officials have vowed to duly address protesters’ legitimate concerns, but have emphasized, at the same time, that the country would not tolerate efforts at tampering with its stability and sovereignty.

The State Department designated the Lebanese branch a foreign terrorist organization, the most severe of the labels, which makes it a criminal offense to provide material support to the group. The Jordanian and Egyptian branches were listed by Treasury as specially designated global terrorists for providing support to Hamas.

"These designations reflect the opening actions of an ongoing, sustained effort to thwart Muslim Brotherhood chapters' violence and destabilization wherever it occurs," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement. "The United States will use all available tools to deprive these Muslim Brotherhood chapters of the resources to engage in or support terrorism."

Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent were mandated last year under an executive order signed by Trump to determine the most appropriate way to impose sanctions on the groups, which U.S. officials say engage in or support violence and destabilization campaigns that harm the United States and other regions.

Muslim Brotherhood leaders have said they renounce violence. Trump's executive order had singled out the chapters in Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt, noting that a wing of the Lebanese chapter had launched rockets on Israel after Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack in Israel that set off the war in Gaza. Leaders of the group in Jordan have provided support to Hamas, the order said.

The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in 1928 but was banned in that country in 2013. Jordan announced a sweeping ban on the Muslim Brotherhood in April. Nathan Brown, a professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University, said some allies of the U.S., including the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, would likely be pleased with the designation.

"For other governments where the brotherhood is tolerated, it would be a thorn in bilateral relations," including in Qatar and Turkey, he said. Brown also said a designation on the chapters may have effects on visa and asylum claims for people entering not just the U.S. but also Western European countries and Canada. "I think this would give immigration officials a stronger basis for suspicion, and it might make courts less likely to question any kind of official action against Brotherhood members who are seeking to stay in this country, seeking political asylum," he said.

Trump, a Republican, weighed whether to designate the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization in 2019 during his first term in office. Some prominent Trump supporters, including right-wing influencer Laura Loomer, have pushed his administration to take aggressive action against the group. Two Republican-led state governments — Florida and Texas — designated the group as a terrorist organization this year.

A senior US State Department official has taken aim at new hate speech laws in Australia, claiming one detail could cause 'deeply perverse' outcomes.

Sarah Rogers, the Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, raised concerns over a clause in the Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill.

It will become a federal offence to publicly promote or incite racial hatred that makes a person feel intimidated, harassed, or unsafe.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese intends to bring in the new law in the wake of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack on December 14.

Activist Drew Pavlou said on X there was a clause in the proposed legislation that exempts people who directly quote from religious texts, providing a loophole for extremists while potentially criminalising legitimate criticism of government policy.

'The Australian government now plans to introduce five year prison sentences for amorphous acts of "hate speech" - defined in such broad terms that it might cover even the most basic calls to lower migration or deport jihadist extremists,' he wrote.

'Meanwhile the Australian government have introduced a special carve out clause in the hate speech legislation to allow Muslim extremists to continue preaching hate so long as they can argue that they are directly quoting or referencing the Quran.'

Rogers shared the post and said she hoped 'this isn't what Australia intends'.

A statute that imprisons you for calling to deport jihadist extremists – but provides safe harbor if you *are* a jihadist extremist – would be deeply perverse,' she wrote.

'This could be a clumsy effort to avoid the disgraces seen in Europe+UK, where citizens are jailed for quoting the Bible or even praying silently.

'But the problem with 'hate speech' laws – one problem of many – is that they're enforced by the kinds of people who coddle actual violent zealots, so long as they seem subaltern.'

Rogers described 'religious freedom' as a 'core value of our administration'.

'But protecting speech *only* if it's religious, while arresting people for secular rejoinders, may distort the public sphere in ways that even progressive censorship enthusiasts dislike,' she wrote.

A spokeswoman for Attorney-General Michelle Rowland defended the legislation.

'The Albanese government's proposed legislation will crack down on those who spread hate, division and radicalisation in our community, and builds upon the government's existing hate speech laws,' she said.

'These laws seek to get the balance right, while avoiding unintended consequences – cracking down on hate speech without undermining freedom of speech or religion.

Manitobans can now carry their health card on a phone as the province launches a digital option aimed at making health care faster, safer, and more convenient.

Premier Wab Kinew, Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara, and Innovation Minister Mike Moroz announced the rollout Monday.

“Digital health cards put Manitobans in control of their own information, make it easier to access care, and support a safer, more responsive health system,” Kinew said, noting the province has moved from paper cards to plastic and now to digital.

The digital card works with MediNav, Manitoba’s online appointment system, allowing residents to book clinic visits and carry their health information all from a mobile device.

Asagwara said the government has eliminated previous delays in health card processing.

Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland on Wednesday at the White House to discuss Trump's interest in acquiring Greenland, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting has not yet been formally announced.

Denmark's foreign minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, said earlier Tuesday that Vance would host a meeting with him and his Greenlandic counterpart, Vivian Motzfeldt, in Washington this week, with Rubio in attendance.

Løkke Rasmussen, a former Danish prime minister, has been foreign minister since 2022 in the government of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. At a joint news conference with Frederiksen in Copenhagen on Tuesday, Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reiterated that Greenland isn't for sale, Danish media reported. He said that the island is part of the kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland doesn't want to be owned or ruled by the U.S.

Frederiksen also said Greenland isn't for sale and underlined Denmark's willingness to invest in Arctic security. She said it hasn't been easy to stand up to unacceptable pressure from a close ally and there are many indications that the most difficult part lies ahead.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte refused to be drawn into the dispute, insisting that it was not his role to get involved."I never, ever comment when there are discussions within the alliance," Rutte said, at the European Parliament in Brussels. "My role has to be to make sure we solve issues."

He said that the 32-nation military organization must focus on providing security in the Arctic region, which includes Greenland. "When it comes to the protection of the High North, that is my role."

Tensions have grown this month as Trump and his administration push the issue and the White House considers a range of options, including military force, to acquire Greenland. Just over four years after Facebook changed its name to Meta, the company is scaling back its virtual reality ambitions.

Meta is cutting about 10% of staff who focus on metaverse-related VR projects as part of its Reality Labs unit, CNBC confirmed.

Russian-flagged tanker seized by US spotted near UK – media

The final destination of the Marinera remains unknown, according to British press reports

The Russian-flagged tanker Marinera, which was captured by the US military in international waters in the North Atlantic, has been spotted off the shores of northeastern Scotland, several British media outlets, including BBC and the Sun, reported on Tuesday.

The vessel was interdicted on January 7 northwest of Scotland. The Pentagon claimed that the ship, formerly known as Bella 1, had been involved in “violations of US sanctions” against Venezuela. The British military provided “support” in seizing the tanker.

The ship was pictured being escorted by a US Coast Guard vessel and British tugboats in the Moray Firth – a large triangular inlet located north and east of Inverness – the media outlets said as they published several photos of the tanker. A British government official told BBC that the tanker had “entered UK waters to be replenished with essential supplies.” The vessel is then expected to sail elsewhere, the official said. According to the media reports, its final destination remains unknown.

Russia previously acknowledged the capture of the vessel. The Transport Ministry stated that the Marinera had received a temporary permit to fly the Russian flag on December 24. It also accused Washington of violating the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which ensures freedom of navigation in international waters.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said last week that the American authorities had been repeatedly notified through official communication channels that the oil tanker was sailing under the Russian flag. Moscow also strongly objected to the threat of prosecution of the tanker’s crew on US soil voiced by American officials.

The ship’s crew was made up of Russian, Ukrainian and Indian nationals. Washington agreed to set free the two Russian crew members following a request by the Kremlin.

The US first set its sights on the tanker in late December after it reportedly tried to approach Venezuela. At the time, the captain refused a demand to board by the US Coast Guard, and changed course towards the Atlantic, prompting the American military to take up pursuit.

Questions Arise Over $5.8 Billion In Rental Assistance

Topline: The federal government is unable to verify that $5.8 billion in rental assistance paid to more than 204,000 recipients in 2024 was not fraudulent, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s latest annual report.

Key facts: HUD spent $15.2 billion on project-based rental assistance in 2024, which pays local housing authorities or private businesses and nonprofits to build affordable housing. That included $4.3 billion in “questionable payments” to nearly 113,000 groups that may have been ineligible for funding, according to the financial report — a mistake rate of over 26%.

HUD also gave $33.9 billion directly to families to help with rent payments, but the financial report claims $1.5 billion sent to almost 92,000 people was “questionable.” The estimates include $77 million paid to 29,715 dead people and $150.3 million paid to 9,472 people with invalid Social Security numbers.

But most of the flagged payments — $5.2 billion — were sent to people or businesses with inactive registrations in the System for Award Management. The federal government is generally not supposed to pay money to anyone not registered on SAM.gov. The online platform allows officials to ensure that a business is legitimate, not a fictional company trying to steal money from the government.

Most of the recipients that did not register on SAM.gov were likely legitimate businesses that mistakenly did not follow federal procedure, not organized criminals intentionally breaking the law. Contrary to viral claims on social media, the payments are not all known to be fraudulent.

Still, HUD would have been able to better screen applicants if it was using the Treasury’s Do Not Pay list, which tracks entities with missing paperwork, debt to the government, a history of fraud and more.

The software agreement that gave HUD access to the list expired in 2019, during President Donald Trump’s first term. It remained inactive throughout Joe Biden’s time as president and was not renewed until May 2025, according to HUD’s inspector general, who blamed both presidents for “weak governance around Do Not Pay implementation” in a May 2025 report.

In 2024, HUD sent $212 million to 11 entities on the Do Not Pay list, the inspector general found.

Background: In its latest financial report, HUD relied on what it called “innovative methods and advanced analytics” to analyze millions of payment records, unlike past audits that use a sample of a few hundred records.

The estimates have never been completed because of “a lack of necessary data, no effective technology platform for collecting supporting documentation, and unsuccessful attempts to manually review information,” according to the financial report.

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) will conduct Exercise FALCON VIRGO, a live-fly air defense exercise, on January 14, 2026, between midnight and 2 a.m. EST in the National Capital Region.

Under the direction of the Continental U.S. NORAD Region, NORAD aircraft participating in the exercise include F-16 fighter aircraft, U.S. Coast Guard MH-65D Dolphin helicopter, U.S. Air Force UH-60 helicopter, and Civil Air Patrol C-182 aircraft.

Some portions of the exercise may involve flights at approximately 1,000 feet and may be visible from the ground. In the event of inclement weather, the exercise is scheduled to commence the next day at the same time.

NORAD routinely conducts exercises with various scenarios, including airspace restriction violations, hijackings, and responses to unknown aircraft. All NORAD exercises are carefully planned and closely controlled.

FALCON VIRGO is a routine exercise in support of Operation NOBLE EAGLE, encompassing all air sovereignty and air defense missions in North America.

Since its inception, NORAD aircraft have identified and intercepted potential air threats to North America, in the execution of its aerospace warning and aerospace control missions, and maintain a watchful eye over Canadian and U.S. internal waterways and maritime approaches under its maritime warning mission.

Just a little correction Scott - we were not anti-VAXXERS because those things were not a vaccine. They were an mRNA experimental therapeutic - and they were absolutely not “Safe & Effective” which was another one of their lying mantras.
