Elite German unit probed over drugs, harassment and Nazi salutes – media

The scandal comes amid Berlin’s recruitment drive to transform the armed forces into the “strongest conventional army in Europe”

Dozens of soldiers in an elite German army unit are under investigation for abuse, bullying, Nazi salutes, and drug use, according to local media.

Fifty-five suspects in the 26th Parachute Regiment, one of Germany’s top-tier units, are being probed over allegations ranging from sexual misconduct to violent extremist rituals, Der Spiegel and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reported last week.

Armed Forces Inspector Christian Freuding visited the regiment’s base in Zweibrucken on Monday, and is due to brief parliament’s defense committee on the investigation later this week.

The allegations surfaced in October after a small local newspaper received an anonymous tip that soldiers there were giving Hitler salutes and photographing colleagues in showers.

The army later confirmed it has been quietly investigating abuse reports at the regiment since early 2025, following complaints from female paratroopers. They described cases when male officers broke into showers and toilets, assaulted and subjected them to vulgar remarks, pornographic jokes, and rape threats. One account said a paratrooper needed emergency surgery after blows to the genitals during training.

Other accounts described far-right rituals, including parties in Nazi-style uniforms with Hitler salutes, reportedly “common” among some of the paratroopers along with anti-Semitic insults such as “Jewish pig.”

Media reports claim the probe also revealed additional offenses, including 16 cases involving hard drugs, mainly cocaine. Around 200 abuse cases have been brought to prosecutors’ attention in total, with dismissal proceedings launched against 19 paratroopers and three reportedly already removed from service.

The scandal has sparked accusations of official inaction and a cover-up. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius only commented publicly late last month, saying he was “appalled” by the “shocking” revelations and giving the impression he had only just learned of the probe.

The reports come amid a major recruitment drive in Germany. Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged to transform the armed forces into the “strongest conventional army in Europe” and make it “war-ready” by 2029, citing an alleged Russian threat. This month, Berlin launched a program to attract 18-year-olds to a new voluntary military service, which critics see as a first step toward reinstating conscription, suspended since 2011.

Moscow has long dismissed claims of a Russian threat as “nonsense” used to justify inflated military budgets. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused German leaders of reviving ambitions to turn Germany into “the main military machine of Europe,” warning of “clear signs of re-nazification.”

Russia open to further contact with Trump’s envoys – Lavrov

President Vladimir Putin has met with Steve Witkoff six times, and will likely accommodate his request for more talks on Ukraine, the diplomat has said (Good Russia has gotten back to the point.)

Moscow is open to further contact with US President Donald Trump’s senior envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Lavrov noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin has already met with Witkoff six times.“I am sure that if they express… interest [for another meeting], then this interest will be met with understanding,”he added.

Also on Wednesday, Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources, claimed that Witkoff and Kushner expect to meet with the Russian president, possibly by the end of the month. According to the publication, the plans have yet to be finalized.If the talks take place, Witkoff and Kushner will present Washington’s latest draft plans for settling the Ukraine conflict to Putin, it added.

Trump’s senior negotiators last visited Moscow in early December 2025. Later that month, Witkoff and Kushner met with Putin envoy Kirill Dmitriev in Miami. Both sides characterized the talks as “constructive.”

US negotiators concurrently held a separate round of talks with Kiev’s representatives and officials from several European countries in Florida.

US-mediated efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict have intensified in recent months, after Trump’s initial peace plan was leaked to the media in November 2025. The roadmap reportedly envisaged Kiev ceding the remainder of Donbass to Moscow, as well as renouncing its NATO membership aspirations and capping the size of its military, among other points.

Last month, Ukraine and its European backers presented a 20-point counter-proposal, which has significantly watered down or distorted the original US-drafted proposal.

“The spectrum ranges from a military option, namely strikes against regime targets, to cyber support against the regime, to providing Starlink systems to help protesters,” one source told the Post.

“While the Trump administration does not believe that the Iranian regime is collapsing, it definitely sees problems and cracks that did not exist a week ago,” the source added.

However, the British newspaper, The Telegraph, dampens expectations that immediate military action is on the agenda:

US media reported that officials would on Tuesday give Mr Trump options for a number of non-lethal measures, including amplifying anti-government criticism online and deploying secretive cyber weapons against Iranian military and civilian sites.

Marco Rubio, the secretary of state, Pete Hegseth, the US defence secretary, and General Dan Caine, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, are expected to attend the briefing.

Commanders in the region have told officials that they need to “consolidate US military positions and prepare defences” before carrying out any military strikes against security services responsible for the bloody crackdown on demonstrations.

A report in the Washington Post corroborates The Telegraph report that the Trump administration is just starting to weigh courses of action:

Options under review, the Journal reported, could include deploying cyberweapons against Iranian military and civilian sites, imposing additional economic sanctions on the Iranian government and launching military strikes.

The CIA and Mossad seem to have forgotten that in order to effect a successful regime change they must have the military and the security services under control. Let’s assume that there were a total of one million protestors scattered among the cities of Iran. That’s still only a little more than 1% of the total population of Iran. While many Iranians are angry or disillusioned with the government of President Pezeshkian’s mishandling of the Iranian economy, that does not mean the majority of Iranians are ready to blame the Ayatollah Khameni.

What are the indicators that the US will strike Iran? The US should have at least one carrier task force in the region, at least a couple of squadrons of fighter/bombers, and the hardening or evacuation of US military bases in the region. So far there is no sign of such activity.

Trump Blasted Federal Prosecutors at White House Event, Calling Them Weak

President Trump criticized a group of U.S. attorneys at a White House event last week, calling them weak and complaining they weren’t moving fast enough to prosecute his favored targets, according to people familiar with the exchange.

Dozens of U.S. attorneys, who lead prosecutors’ offices around the country, went to the White House Thursday for what was supposed to be a ceremonial photo shoot. After Attorney General Pam Bondi introduced the group of prosecutors, Trump criticized them as ineffective, saying the group was making it difficult for Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche to do their jobs, the people said.

The exchange came a day before federal prosecutors sent grand jury subpoenas to the Federal Reserve on Friday, related to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s testimony last summer about the central bank’s building-renovation project.

Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, who was in attendance at the White House event, said in a social-media post Monday that the Fed subpoenas came after her office hadn’t gotten answers to multiple information requests. The inquiry opened in November. A lawyer in Pirro’s office sent two emails to the Fed last month—one before Christmas and another 10 days later—seeking information about the renovation, according to a person familiar with the matter. The emails didn’t refer to any deadline or criminal investigation.

“None of this would have happened if they had just responded to our outreach,” Pirro said in the post. “This office makes decisions based on the merits, nothing more and nothing less.”

The Justice Department referred questions to the White House, which didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

A spokesman for Pirro’s office declined to comment Tuesday. Pirro posted a group photo from the meeting on her Instagram account.

Powell in a video statement on Sunday called the probe politically motivated. A Fed spokesperson declined to comment.

Among his grievances with prosecutors, Trump complained that the Justice Department hadn’t yet brought a case against one of his most prominent Democratic adversaries, Sen. Adam Schiff of California, the people said.

The department has been investigating whether Schiff engaged in mortgage fraud. The senator has called the probe a bogus attempt at political retribution.

The president criticized some specific prosecutors by jurisdiction and said he felt betrayed, the people said.

Asked about Powell during a press gaggle on Tuesday, Trump said, “Well, he’s billions of dollars over budget. So, he either is incompetent, or he is crooked. I don’t know what he is, but he certainly doesn’t do a very good job.”

Trump’s blowup at Justice Department prosecutors comes as the president ramps up pressure on the agency to more aggressively pursue his priorities. He has complained repeatedly in recent weeks about Bondi, calling her an ineffective enforcer of his agenda.

The president’s pressure campaign has rattled people within the department, including some lawyers brought on by the administration. Late last year, Trump forced out a conservative U.S. attorney in Virginia who told supervisors he had not found enough evidence to prosecute New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI director James Comey. Former Trump lawyer Lindsey Halligan stepped into the job and quickly brought charges against both individuals, only to see the cases dismissed by a judge who ruled Halligan was unlawfully appointed.

The subpoenas to the Federal Reserve have further demoralized Pirro’s office in Washington, where lawyers have left in droves or been fired since Trump’s return to the White House, according to people familiar with the office.

Pirro, a former Fox News personality, took the job in May. Though an unconventional choice, she had experience as a prosecutor, serving as district attorney of Westchester County, N.Y.

Pirro faced an early test with the killing of two Israeli embassy staffers in the heart of Washington, D.C., and prosecutors saw her rising to the moment with a polished, professional demeanor. But the relative stability she brought to the office eroded in the late summer as Trump deployed federal agents and National Guard members into the streets of Washington, with Pirro directing prosecutors to charge defendants with the most serious federal charges possible. Immigrant Secret Service Agent Leaks JD Vance's Travel Details

Journalist James O’Keefe published a shocking report Tuesday about how a Secret Service agent assigned to Vice President JD Vance’s security detail leaked details about his travels to one of O’Keefe’s undercover reporters.

Furthermore, the agent, Tomas Escotto, only became a citizen in 2018, he voted for Joe Biden for president in 2020, and he “hates ICE,” according to O’Keefe’s report, which comes on the heels of a man attacking Vance’s Cincinnati home with a hammer earlier this month.

Escotto, who may have broken the law with his leaks, has reportedly been placed on administrative leave and has had his security clearance revoked.

As is typical with O’Keefe’s journalism, Escotto was apparently catfished by the undercover female reporter—meeting her on the dating app Tinder. Footage shows Escotto spilling the beans about his job to the reporter during a dinner date. He later texted her photos of sensitive locations, as well as details of Vance’s travel plans—telling the reporter in on Dec. 26 that the vice president would be in Ohio for four to five days before traveling to Florida for the weekend.

FBI Raids Home of Washington Post Reporter Who Obtained and Published Illegally Leaked Information From Pentagon Contractor

The FBI raided the home of a Washington Post reporter who obtained classified and illegally leaked information from a Pentagon contractor.

Feds executed a search warrant at the Alexandria, Virginia, home of WaPo reporter Hannah Natanson on Wednesday morning as part of an investigation into a Maryland system administrator who has a top security clearance.

The FBI seized Natanson’s cell phone, two laptops (one personal and one work-related), and a Garmin watch.

Natanson is not the subject of the investigation.

According to The Washington Post, Natanson was at home at the time of the raid.

The contractor who stashed the classified documents at his home, Aurelio Perez-Lugones, is currently in jail.

FBI agents reportedly found classified intelligence reports in Perez-Lugones’ lunchbox and basement.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi said the search was conducted at the Pentagon’s request.

Bondi also said that the Trump Administration will not tolerate any leaks.

“This past week, at the request of the Department of War, the Department of Justice and FBI executed a search warrant at the home of a Washington Post journalist who was obtaining and reporting classified and illegally leaked information from a Pentagon contractor,” US Attorney General Pam Bondi said.

“The leaker is currently behind bars. I am proud to work alongside Secretary Hegseth on this effort,” she said.

“The Trump Administration will not tolerate illegal leaks of classified information that, when reported, pose a grave risk to our Nation’s national security and the brave men and women who are serving our country,” Bondi said.

The story of the Honeydogsbegins in Minneapolisin the early 1990’s with two combative yet musically harmonious brothers, songwriter/guitarist Adam and drummer Noah Levy who wanted a band in which their favorite music-soul, American roots music, British pop, and punk–could coexist.

The band name has it’s origins in the Levy brothers’ Dickensian childhood. Mrs. Levy grew tired of caring for the demanding, precocious younger brother, Noah. He spent much of his lonely toddler-hood being babysat by the bee farm in their backyard and watching elder brother Adam play cardboard guitar to KISS records. Noah's earliest friends were bees—and what was the bee hive rack called in which those buzzing surrogate nannies made their home?…A honeydog.

The Levy brothers found a kindred spirit in bassist Trent Norton who hadrecently returned from a couple years touring the former Soviet Unionand Western Europe in various bands. Together with John Fields and a few guests, Trent, Adam and Noah made the exuberant, eponymous debut, The Honeydogs (1995).

The band toured extensively in those early years, with the brothers Levy beating the fraternal crap out of each other across the Lower 48.

Guitarist Tommy Borscheid’s union with the band in 1995 helped fashion the band’s rough-and-tumble early signature sound on Everything, I Bet You (1996) for which Billboard magazine hailed them as “Alt Country’s Next Big Thing” in the mid 1990’s. “But Country was only one facet of what we are doing or interested in,” Adam says. “We liked Bowie and Jobim as much as the Flying Burrito Brothers and Merle Haggard.”

In the early days, Levy penned tunes like“Miriam,” a tribute to his late grandmotherand her life immersed in social justice work. In “John Brown” Levy imagines how the abolitionist, if still alive, would view our current state of race relations. “Freak Show at the Fair” tapped into the alienation of people with disabilities and reflects on the society which excludes them.

Courted and signed by the majors, The Honeydogs produced Seen A Ghost (1997), their largest selling record. They were strange halcyon days, recalls bassist Norton “We toured with INXS weeks before Michael Hutchence’s death. We were feted and flown around the country and promised the moon.”

But their creative wanderlust and Levy’s ever-expanding songwriting and stylistic vocabulary led them down more obscure, albeit fertile, musical paths. The follow up to Seen a Ghost was Here’s Luck (2000), recorded immediately following two tragedies in the band—the departure of guitarist Borscheid and Trent Norton’s near death seizure. With howling guitars, soaring strings, melotrons, and dark psychedelia, Here’s Luck was a paean to the music business sausage grinder and the band’s indefatigable spirit.

With the addition of the angular, modernist/minimalist guitar work of Brian Halverson and the colorful, unfettered genius of Jeff Victor’s keyboard playing, the band’s live and recorded sound began to evolve.

Their 2003 release, 10,000 Years, received widespread critical accolades as “the Sgt Pepper of the new millennium, “Levy’s masterpiece” and “a rock opera that would make Peter Townsend cry”. Its conception and creation in 1999 predated 9/11 and eerily anticipated terrorist attacks on the West. Inspired by Levy’s 17 years of work with youth offenders, welfare-to-work participants and immigrant populations,10,000 Years created a fan in Aimee Mann who released the record on her label and brought the band out on tour.

On their newest effort,Amygdala (pronounced uh mig’ dull uh), the band again teamed up with long time friend, collaborator and producer, John Fields, recording a marathon 5 day session in Minneapolis in fall of 2005. Guitarist Brian Halverson describes the session as “more raw and organic than the last few records.”

The amygdalae are almond-shaped groups of neurons in the brain which regulate emotions, specifically fear. All of Levy’s songs on Amygdala explore fear, obsession, addiction, and the idea that emotional experience forms human memory.

Amygdala continues the Honeydogs’ expansion of their sonic and stylistic palette record-to-record and features a revitalized lineup, including keyboardist and sonic wizard Peter J Sands and Minneapolis veteran drummer Peter Anderson. Halverson, along with Sands, create an eerie Stockhausen/Eno-esque sonic backdrop for Levy’s acidic lyrics and undulating melodies. Drummer Anderson brings a combination of rock raggedness and artful cadence to Amygdala.

Among the guests on the new album are Aimee Mann and Dan Wilson (Semisonic).The journey for the Honeydogs from one-time American roots music torch bearers to contemporary art rockers has been a long and fruitful one and Amygdala is the Honeydogs’ most experimental yet accessible work to date.

US opens missile facility in Qatar amid Iran tensions

President Donald Trump earlier signaled support for protests in the Islamic Republic and threatened new strikes

The US has opened a new air and missile defense coordination cell at a key airbase in Qatar amid rising tensions with Iran and President Donald Trump’s promises to assist protesters in the Islamic Republic.

In a statement on Tuesday, US Central Command said the facility at the Al Udeid Air Base, which houses some 10,000 troops, will be comprised of American and allied personnel and seeks to “enhance integrated air and missile defense.” The new cell is also intended to tighten information-sharing, threat warning, drills and joint responses for air and missile defense, US officials said.

Reuters reported, citing three unnamed diplomats, that some personnel had been advised to leave the base by Wednesday evening for unknown reasons. The agency noted that the US took the same measures ahead of strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last summer, while the Al Udeid Air Base came under a retaliatory attack from Tehran at the time.

Anthony Fauci privately acknowledged “impressive data” showed stronger immunity from a COVID-19 infection than vaccination while publicly pushing mandated shots, newly released documents show.

Former President Joe Biden’s top pandemic response officials discussed a thorough study from Israel showing the superiority of natural infection in August 2021, simultaneous with the initiation of federal vaccine mandates via an Aug. 24 Pentagon memo, according to documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act by Protect the Public’s Trust, indicating officials who helped compel COVID shots had contemporaneous scientific evidence they were unjustifiable for millions of Americans. The officials distorted the evidence in public statements, repeatedly saying vaccination is necessary for immunity.

“What does it say about our own institutions that, despite billions spent every year, Americans had to rely on Israeli research for their health information, and that our own officials tried to bury what didn’t fit their preferred narrative?” Protect the Public’s Trust Director Michael Chamberlain told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “There’s been a lot of handwringing about reforms and personnel actions by the new leadership at HHS, but this is just more evidence that the public health bureaucracy was ripe for a thorough housecleaning.”

The revelation comes amid an ongoing investigation under President Donald Trump’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary into deaths following the COVID vaccines in children and young adults. Further details could uncover whether people died from shots mandated by Biden administration officials aware of their redundancy for people with prior immunity.

“This is the evidence right here showing that our nation’s scientific leaders were not acting scientifically, and there needs to be accountability,” said Stephanie Edewaard Weidle, executive director of Feds For Freedom, to the DCNF. “We in the medical freedom fighting world, we already knew this, but to see it spelled out in these FOIA documents just makes it worse. People lost their jobs and their lives were turned upside down based on the argument that natural immunity was not enough.”

‘Look Rather Impressive’

Privately, Fauci and National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Francis Collins acknowledged the strength of an Israeli study, featured in the news division of the prestigious journal Science, showing people who had recovered from a natural infection were 13 times more protected against subsequent infections than those vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine. Publicly, the NIH launched a public relations blitz for indiscriminate vaccine mandates.

“The data [in the Israeli study] as reported in the news article look rather impressive . . . . but I would imagine that it is more complicated than we think . . . . [I]t is conceivable and possibly likely that those who have had a serious systemic infection develop a high level of immunity that even surpasses that of full vaccination,” Fauci conceded in an Aug. 27, 2021 email with the subject line “RE: Post infection protection vs vaccine immunity.”

Despite awareness of the “impressive data” showing the strength of natural immunity by August, Fauci advocated for broad vaccine mandates in media appearances throughout the fall.
