The warhead of an Iranian missile hit a site just several dozen meters from the Old City of Jerusalem, and just several hundred meters from the Western Wall and the Temple Mount, during the course of Saturday, police announced on Sunday.

According to police, an explosion was heard and smoke was seen rising from a site just west of the Old City on Saturday morning, shortly after the beginning of the latest armed conflict with Iran.

The impact site appears to have been the Sultan’s Pool outdoor events venue, which lies just a few dozen meters to the west of the Old City and just under a kilometer west of the Temple Mount, as the crow flies.

Police and sappers conducted searches of the area and found the warhead from an Iranian ballistic missile, along with “incendiary and explosive materials” scattered nearby, the police said.

The warhead was then neutralized by sappers from the police’s Jerusalem District.

President Donald Trump broke his silence Sunday on the first US casualties of the Iran war in an exclusive phone interview with the Daily Mail.

Three US service members were killed in the fighting. They have yet to be identified publicly.

'They're great people,' the president said. 'And, you know, we expect that to happen, unfortunately. Could happen continuous - it could happen again.'

Trump acknowledged that the three casualties were the first in his second term, as the January capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduroand the June bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities were pulled off without a single American death.

'We've done pretty well,' he noted, adding, 'But they're great people, with outstanding records, outstanding.'

Trump also revealed a potential timeline for the war with Iran - suggesting fighting could go on for the next four weeks.

'It's always been a four-week process. We figured it will be four weeks or so. It's always been about a four-week process so - as strong as it is, it's a big country, it'll take four weeks - or less,' the president explained.

He said he hasn't been surprised by any of the outcomes of the strikes thus far.

The president, as he said he would during that interview, addressed the American people again via a Truth Social video later Sunday afternoon.

He vowed to 'avenge' US troops killed in the war in Iran, issued a new ultimatum to the enemy and implored America to back his battle for 'freedom' in his second address to the nation in 48 hours.

'America will avenge their deaths and deliver the most punishing blow to the terrorists who have waged war against basically, civilization,' Trump said from his Mar-a-Lago resort on Sunday after the deaths of three service personnel in Kuwait.

He said his people had been in touch with the families of the deceased service members.

'And I'll be meeting with their families at the appropriate time,' he said.

Trump said he'd 'maybe' travel out to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware for the solemn dignified transfer of the troops' remains or invite the families to the White House.

He also remained hopeful that a democracy could grow in Iran after the US and Israeli strikes end.

'I do,' he answered. 'It'll be very interesting to watch, but a lot of things could happen and a lot of very positive things could happen.'

Retired US General Jack Keane said on Fox News on Sunday that several Persian Gulf states are preparing for offensive operations in coordination with US Central Command.

Keane said the states are already defending themselves, with some preparing for combat and one reportedly having already begun operations. He added that two others are “about to get going.”

The operations, Keane said, will involve “coordinated, selected targets” under the oversight of Admiral Cooper and Central Command, and will contribute to the “offensive nature” of ongoing military actions in.

Australian motorists could face petrol price hikes in as little as a week amid deadly conflict in the Middle East, the NRMA has warned.

The US released footage of B-2 stealth bombers armed with 2,000 pound bombs that struck Iran’s ballistic missile facilities.

The US deployed B-2 stealth bombers on Saturday night, according to CENTCOM.

This is the second time the US has used B-2 bombers in an effort to neutralize Iran.

Last year, B-2 Bombers dropped at least 6 30,000-pound bunker busting bombs on the Fordow nuclear plant. The US claimed it totally obliterated the underground plant.

“Last night, U.S. B-2 stealth bombers, armed with 2,000 lb. bombs, struck Iran’s hardened ballistic missile facilities. No nation should ever doubt America’s resolve,” CENTCOM said.

Earlier Saturday morning, Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei and more than 40 top Iranian leaders were killed in the US-Israel military operation.

The US also sunk 9 Iranian naval ships.

The British Royal Air Force base Akrotiri in Cyprus was indeed targeted by a “suspected drone strike” earlier in the night, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed, without clarifying whether there was any damage or casualties.

“Our armed forces are responding to a suspected drone strike at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus at midnight local time,” an MoD spokesperson told the media. “Our force protection in the region is at the highest level and the base has responded to defend our people.”

The incident took place shortly after PM Keir Starmer said the UK had agreed to allow the US to use British military bases for “defensive” strikes against Iran.

Rory Amon, 36, returned to the witness box today to defend a slew of child sex charges relating to various acts done to the teen in 2017.

The boy, who was 13 years old at the time, met the future politician through a gay dating app before the alleged rape and sexual abuse took place.

Amon says he drove to the teen's Sydney apartment on July 22, 2017, believing the youth was 17-years-old.

Today, he told a NSW Supreme Court jury he had met the boy outside the unit complex before being led to the underground car park's bathroom.

He was hazy on the details about what happened next but said he likely would have asked the boy for a kiss.

Iran Tries to Intimidate Shipping With Attacks in the Strait of Hormuz

Iranian authorities are attempting to close the Straits of Hormuz by warning traffic over Channel 16 that the Straits are closed. When these attempts failed, the Iranians resorted to mounting attacks, and three vessels having been struck so far as of March 1.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Centre in Dubai issued a warning at 0700UTC on February 28 that the Iranian authorities were contacting ships on Channel 16 and warning them that the Straits were closed. The UKMTO however said that such calls were not an authorized means of closing the Straits.

The UKMTO recommended merchant traffic proceed through the TSS, but exercising caution and keeping a distance from naval vessels providing a protective presence in the Straits. It acknowledged the situation was fast-changing.

The Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) naval coalition based in Bahrain has declared the situation in the Strait of Hormuz "critical," and warns that while the strait is not formally closed, "active kinetic hazard conditions" exist in the area. The CMF warned of high levels of GPS signal disruption, adding to navigational risk, and cautioned watchstanders to cross-check GPS rather than relying upon it for positioning - an everyday safety standard not always followed in practice.

A Kpler marine traffic playback of traffic late on February 28 showed however that there was still heavy eastbound traffic using the Straits throughout the day, although not too many ships were trying to use the northern, in-bound channel of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS).

But on March 1, AIS data showed the area of the TSS largely devoid of traffic, with heavy concentrations of vessels at anchor off Dubai and Khor Fakkan, on the approaches to the west and east sides of the TSS (respectively).

The Omani Maritime Security Centre reported that the Palau-flagged oil tanker Skylight (IMO 9396737) had been hit five nautical off the Musandam peninsula, well within Omani territorial waters, injuring four crew and prompting the evacuation by the Royal Navy of Oman of 20 others. The Skylight was an odd target for the Iranians to choose as it has been previously sanctioned for providing bunkering support to dark fleet tankers.

UKMTO and other sources have reported three further incidents. The crude oil tanker MKD Vyom was struck on the eastern approaches, 50 nm north of Muscat, reportedly killing one crewmember in the engine room. UKMTO reports that the product tanker Hercules Star has been hit at a position off Mina Saqr. And unconfirmed open-source intelligence reports suggest that the product tanker Sea La Donna has been struck somewhere near Abu Dhabi.

Heavy GPS disruption makes vessel position identification difficult, as many of the affected vessels' AIS signals show obvious signs of spoofing (irrational speeds, positions on land, ring-shaped movements).

Amidst ongoing back-and-forth strikes between Iran, its neighbors and U.S. forces, Ukraine has carried on with its campaign of long-range attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. On Sunday, Ukraine's drone operators appear to have hit an oil terminal at the port of Novorossiysk once again, the latest strike in a series of actions intended to slow down Russia's revenue-generating energy exports and shrink the Kremlin's war chest.

Russian Telegram news channel Astra reports that Ukraine hit an oil terminal in the harbor overnight on March 1-2. The attack also damaged four buildings and five private homes, Astra said. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Open-source researchers have identified the position of at least one strike: the Transneft Sheskharis loading terminal on the east side of the bay, just next to the Vostochnyy Rayon naval harbor. The terminal was previously hit last year, along with Russian energy export infrastructure at nearby Tuapse and Temryuk.

Additional, unconfirmed bystander videos from the scene showed a large fire burning on the waterfront, adjacent to a container STS crane. Audio in the background had the sound of ongoing air defense antiaircraft fire.

The Sheskharis terminal inside the harbor is operated by Russian midstream giant Transneft, and it handles Russian oil quasi-sanctioned under the G7 "price cap" measure, to which the U.S. is a party. Transneft is also a business partner with U.S. oil majors in the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, the mega-pipeline that carries Kazakh oil across Russian territory to a single point mooring buoy terminal located outside of the harbor, about 10 nautical miles to the west of the Sheskharis site.

After previous Ukrainian attacks on the Caspian Pipeline Consortium marine terminal and the pipeline itself, the Trump administration formally complained to Ukraine's ambassador to Washington and instructed Ukraine to avoid damaging U.S. interests. On February 24, Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. Olga Stefanishya said that the White House's complaint centered on "American investments which are being performed through Kazakhstan."

Ukraine has also attacked the CPC's pumping stations, and it hit multiple oil tankers bound for the CPC terminal in January, interfering with Kazakh and U.S. oil interests.

As tensions rose in the Middle East immediately prior to the pre-emptive American and Israeli attack on Iran on February 28, there were indicators of an imminent attack. International airlines abandoned routes through Iranian airspace the previous day, as the USS Gerald Ford (CVN-78) carrier strike group neared the Israeli coast. But the regular Iranian Navy (Nedaja) appears not to have adjusted its deployments and has not conducted a wholesale dispersal to sea from its home ports until hours before the attack.

U.S. Central Command announced on March 1 that U.S. forces struck an Iranian Jamaran-class corvette [sic]. According to the report, "The ship is currently sinking to the bottom of the Gulf of Oman at a Chah Bahar pier." Donald Trump posted online on the afternoon of March 1 that nine Iranian ships had been damaged or sunk. He also said the naval headquarters had been destroyed.

Over previous days, there has been a return to home ports of Nedaja ships which had been out on deployment. Moudge Class frigate IRINS Dena (F75) has completed its participation in the Indian International Fleet Review, and Exercise MILAN-2026 which followed. Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, the Nedaja commander, on February 27 welcomed home the 103rd Naval Flotilla on its delayed return from participation in Exercise Will for Peace 2026 off Cape Town. The flotilla docked at the Konarak Naval Base in Chah Bahar rather than in Bandar Abbas, although the IRGC Navy participant the converted oil tanker, IRIS Shahid Mahdavi (C110-3) appeared to have moved on to its regular mooring in the Bandar Abbas roads.

On February 25, Nedaja frigates IRINS Sabalan (F73), Sahand (F74), Jamaran (F76) and Zagros (H313) were all alongside in the Bandar Abbas Naval Harbor. An unconfirmed report late on February 28 suggested that IRINS Jamaran had been attacked. Also present in the inner harbor was the one Kilo Class submarine believed to be semi-operational IRINS Taregh (S901), and a second still undergoing deep refit in dry dock IRINS Nooh (S902); the whereabouts of the third Kilo Class submarine IRINS Yunes (S903) remains uncertain since it left dry dock some months ago.

Unusually, not one of the Bandar Abbas and Hengam Class logistic vessels was in port. At this time on February 27, IRINS Kurdestan (K442) was on its pier in the Outer Harbor, but by the next day it had moved to a position just outside the outer basin, and its place at the pier had been taken by the converted tanker IRINS Makran (K441),

An IRGC Navy (Nedsa) catamaran corvette, probably IRIS Shahid Nazeri, used as a headquarters ship, was moored as it normally is, in the western basin of the Naval Harbor, and the two Nedsa converted oil tanker drone carriers, IRIS Shahid Mahdavi (C110-3) and IRIS Shahid Bagheri (C110-4) were on February 27 anchored in their normal positions in the Bandar Abbas roads, about 4nm south of the Naval Harbor.

On February 27, the last good quality imagery available of Bandar Abbas Naval Harbor area, showed that this disposition of the ships in the harbor was largely unchanged.

Minutes after Defrin finished his press conference, Defense Minister Israel Katz posted that Hezbollah Chief Naim Qassem is now in the IDF's crosshairs.

IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Effie Defrin on Monday said that it was still possible that the IDF might invade southern Lebanon in response to Hezbollah's rocket attacks overnight.

Russia’s Arctic LNG shadow fleet appears to be operating largely undeterred by escalating conflict in the Middle East, with at least seven tankers recently transiting or currently en route through the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb strait en route to and from Asia, even as many global shipping operators reroute to avoid the region.

While traffic through the Red Sea corridor has thinned amid rising tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran, vessels lifting Russian liquefied natural gas from the Arctic have continued to use the shortcut to Asia, ship-tracking data over the weekend show.

The movements contrast with mounting uncertainty over Qatari exports, which must pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint that has seen slower traffic and heightened security concerns in recent days.

At least seven LNG carriers linked to Russia’s Arctic LNG trade have either recently passed through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb strait or are currently sailing toward the corridor en route to China, according to AIS data reviewed this week.

Southbound LNG carrier La Perouse has completed its transit of the Suez Canal and entered the Red Sea, while northbound Arctic Pioneer is approaching the canal after passing through the Red Sea.

Further south, Arctic Mulan and Iris are sailing east after clearing the Bab el-Mandeb strait. In the Indian Ocean, Nova Energy and Arctic Vostok remain on course for the Red Sea and Suez, while Arctic Metagaz is heading toward the canal from the Mediterranean.

Several global container lines and LNG carrier operators, by contrast, have opted to divert vessels around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa to reduce exposure to potential escalation.

Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project, led by Novatek, has faced sweeping Western sanctions since last year, forcing it to rely on a limited pool of ice-class Arc7 carriers and a growing network of conventional LNG carriers operating outside mainstream Western financing and insurance channels. After loading in the Arctic, cargoes are typically transshipped onto conventional tankers for onward delivery to Asia.

Access to the Red Sea corridor significantly shortens the voyage to China compared with a detour around southern Africa, reducing sailing times and tonne-miles. For Novatek, whose fleet of conventional LNG carriers is limited, avoiding the longer Cape route is critical to maintaining cargo rotation and freeing vessels for additional liftings.

Major energy and container shipping companies have cited security risks in the region as grounds for rerouting. The Cape of Good Hope diversion adds roughly 10 to 15 days to voyages between Europe and Asia, depending on speed and weather, increasing fuel costs and tightening vessel availability.

In contrast, Russian-linked LNG carriers have so far continued to transit the Red Sea, suggesting that the shadow fleet – often operating with non-Western insurers, opaque ownership structures and flags of convenience – may face fewer commercial constraints than mainstream operators bound by stricter risk assessments and compliance policies.

Currently, China’s Beihai LNG terminal remains the only confirmed buyer receiving cargoes from Arctic LNG 2. The terminal has not been sanctioned by either the United States or the European Union more than six months after accepting its first cargo from the project, potentially easing concerns among counterparties about immediate secondary sanctions exposure.

Any prolonged disruption to traffic through Hormuz could reshape buying patterns in Asia. Qatar is one of the world’s largest LNG exporters, and sustained delays or perceived risks to its shipments could prompt Asian buyers to seek alternative volumes, including discounted Russian cargoes.

For now, Russia’s Arctic LNG flows appear operationally intact despite broader turmoil. Whether that resilience translates into expanded market access in the months ahead remains to be seen.

Cruise Lines Navigate Gulf Conflict Amidst Continued Iranian Strikes

Given the centrality of the oil trade to the GCC states, tankers have rightfully received the most attention of any vessel class in the new conflict in the Gulf. But cruising is increasingly popular in the region, and at least half a dozen cruise ships are in the affected area - including some which may be staying longer than expected due to ongoing Iranian strikes.

One of these vessels is newly homeported in the region. The Saudi cruise ship Aroya Manara (ex name World Dream) is currently moored in Dubai, and independent operator Aroya is deferring plans for a round-trip cruise through the Strait of Hormuz to visit Muscat.

Many others are temporarily based in the UAE or Qatar. German firm TUI Cruises has two vessels berthed in the area - the Mein Schiff 4 in Abu Dhabi and the Mein Schiff 5 in Doha. Abu Dhabi was attacked by Iran in a missile strike over the weekend, and passengers aboard Mein Schiff 4 were able to see Iranian drones hit the water from on board the vessel. Mein Schiff 5 is scheduled to conduct a series of round-trip cruises in the Gulf, and was slated to depart Doha on Saturday.

TUI has temporarily suspended sailings for both vessels, but it is unclear when passengers or crew will be able to depart: with airspace restrictions in place, travel in or out of the GCC is currently difficult.

Shipping giant MSC's cruise division has one vessel currently moored at Doha, MSC Euribia. The ship has about 5,000 passengers on board from its previous voyage, but it will not be departing as planned for its next seven-night cruise in the Arabian Gulf. Instead, it will be staying in port "due to the current situation and the air space closure in the Middle East."

Privately-held Celestyal Cruises, based in Athens, operates two cruise ships; both are in the Gulf, west of Hormuz. The line said in a statement Sunday that the next departures for Celestyal Journey (departing Doha) and Celestyal Discovery (departing Dubai) have been canceled: both were due to sail on Monday, but the line intends to put passenger and crew safety first in light of current circumstances. Guests of the Journey have the option to stay aboard or to go ashore in Doha, but authorities in Dubai have instructed Celestyal Discovery not to disembark passengers for the time being. The UAE has suspended all flights to and from Dubai amidst ongoing Iranian missile and drone attacks, so passengers would have few options for onward travel.

Iran has reportedly hit an unnamed oil platform and a jackup rig located within the United Arab Emirates part of the Persian Gulf, increasing the number of targets in its offensive.

The attack on the platform came after Iran warned all countries in the region to stop supporting military operations by Western forces.

According to local media outlets, smoke could be seen coming from the facility. Emergency response teams are currently assessing the structural integrity and environmental impact of the hit.

This strike follows three confirmed strikes on merchant ships to date, resulting in one seafarer’s death and others injured, and many ports in the region were forced to suspend operations for periods of time over the weekend.

The Iranian forces also hit residential areas in Dubai, Bahrain, and a US naval facility at the Middle Eastern country’s Salman Port, which houses the US Navy’s Central Command and Fifth Fleet.

Arshad Khatana, a Leeds mosque chairman and Labour Party member, has been administratively suspended from the party pending an investigation into allegations of holding "abhorrent" and "shocking" views, including antisemitic rhetoric and support for extremist conspiracy theories.

Rachel Reeves, the UK Chancellor, has been criticized by Reform UK’s Treasury spokesman Robert Jenrick for her longstanding association with Khatana, including being pictured with him 27 times since 2010 and visiting his home. The escalating war in the Middle East has ratcheted up fears of prolonged disruption to global trade via key maritime corridors like the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Container shipping giants have suspended operations through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and rerouted vessels around the southern tip of Africa, following U.S. and Israel strikes on Iranover the weekend.

Danish shipping company Maersk said in a statement that it would suspend all vessel crossings in the Strait of Hormuz until further notice, warning that services calling ports in the Arabian Gulf may experience delays.

Located in the gulf between Oman and Iran, the Strait of Hormuz is recognized as one of the world’s most important oil choke points. In 2023, oil flows through the waterway averaged 20.9 million barrels per day, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, accounting for about 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption.

Maersk, widely regarded as a barometer of global trade, said the situation in the Middle East had also prompted it to pause future trans-Suez sailings through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait until further notice.

This waterway is a narrow maritime pinch point that sits between the Horn of Africa and the Middle East, linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait was estimated to account for 12% of seaborne oil trade and 8% of liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade in the first half of 2023.

Maersk said all sailings on the Middle East-India to Mediterranean and Middle East-India to east coast U.S. services would be rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope.

Peter Sand, chief analyst at Xeneta, said higher container shipping rates should be factored in for the Middle East region at least for as long as the conflict persists, adding there is “no real alternative” to ocean freight.

“The risk of geopolitics has shown its ugly face with higher frequency and more severity over the past years than ever before,” Sand told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” on Monday.

“I think it’s fair also to say there is a little bit of fatigue also in the industry because you draw 10 contingency plans only to tear them all up because there is a new twist and a new angle to it.”

Even if oil tankers are only temporarily blocked from the Strait of Hormuz, it can ratchet up global energy prices, raise shipping costs and create significant supply delays.

The Strait of Hormuz is also key for global container trade. Ports in this region such as Jebel Ali and Khor Fakkan are transshipment hubs that serve as intermediary points in global networks.

Alongside Maersk, German container shipping firm Hapag-Lloyd

said over the weekend that all vessels transiting through the Strait of Hormuz would be suspended, citing the safety and security of its crews.

France’s CMA CGM said Saturday that it had instructed all of its vessels inside the Gulf and bound for the region to proceed to shelter. Passage through the Suez Canal has also been suspended until further notice, CMA CGM said, with vessels rerouted around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope.

MSC, the world’s largest container shipping company, said Monday that it had ordered all vessels operating in the Gulf region to proceed to designated safe areas, adding that it would closely monitor further developments.

‘Extremely cautious’

Amrita Sen, founder and director of market intelligence at Energy Aspects, said on Monday that the key question is what happens to the Strait of Hormuz.

She estimated that approximately 15 million barrels of oil and approximately 80 million tons of LNG traversed the waterway last year.

“We don’t think that’s very likely,” Sen told CNBC’s “Europe Early Edition” when asked whether Iran would seek to shut off the strait completely.

Steve Eisman of “The Big Short” famesaid investors should ignore the U.S.-Iran war as it could be a long-term positive for markets.

In fact, when the investor was asked Monday by CNBC’s Joe Kernen on “Squawk Box”whether he would change anything because of the conflict, he responded with, “Not a single trade.”

“I think long term, this is very, very positive,” Eisman said. “People react because of what’s happening, oil prices are obviously up. But if it goes well, two months from now, prices will be back to where they were.”

The stock market was in turmoil Monday after the U.S. in a joint attack with Israel attacked Iran over the weekend and killed the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a strike that triggered retaliatory attacks from Tehran.

Historically, geopolitical conflicts have little lasting effect on stocks. In data going back to 1980, the S&P 500 on average is unchanged the day after such an event, according to Barclays’ trading desk. Studies show stocks tend to recover within a month after the start of a conflict.

But sharply higher oil prices, and the potential for the conflict to spread across the region, could pressure the stock market for longer this time. Stocks were already close to record highs ahead of the conflict, but the pace of the bull market had begun to slow on concerns about AI’s overall impact on the economy.

In expressing his own views on the conflict, “The Real Eisman Playbook” podcast host and former Neuberger Berman money manager said he’s supportive of Trump’s actions against a regime he called a “death cult.”

However, he also acknowledged the conflict may take longer than expected.

“This is going to take time,” he said.

President Emmanuel Macron said Monday France would increase the number of its nuclear warheads as he laid out how the European Union’s only atomic arsenal could protect the continent.

“An upgrade of our arsenal is essential,” he said from France’s Ile Longue nuclear submarine base. “That’s why I ordered an increase in the number of nuclear warheads in our arsenal.”

Macron added however that France — which holds the world’s fourth-largest nuclear arsenal, estimated at around 290 warheads — would no longer be disclosing details on its contents.
