Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said early Tuesday that an attack against Iran was urgently necessary because Iran was building new underground sites to shield its missile and nuclear programs from attacks.
US President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff, meanwhile, revealed that Iranian negotiators boasted “to us directly, with no shame,” in talks earlier this year, that they had evaded international safeguards to enrich enough uranium so as “to get to a place where they could deliver 11 nuclear bombs.”
In an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu said, “The reason that we had to act now is because after we hit their nuclear sites and their ballistic missile program [in June 2025]… they started building new sites… underground bunkers that would make their ballistic missile program and their atomic bomb program immune within months.”
“If no action was taken now, no action could be taken in the future,” he said.
Netanyahu’s comments came less than nine months after he declared, at the end of the June war, that Israel had “achieved a historic victory” over Iran that would “abide for generations.”
In his Fox interview, the prime minister denied that the US and Israel were engaging in an “endless war” against Iran, insisting that the operation would end quickly.
“I hear people are telling you that you’re going to have an endless war here — You’re not going to have an endless war because… this terror regime in Iran is at its weakest point” since its founding, Netanyahu said.
“This is going to be a quick and decisive action,” he asserted.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Tuesday, discussing the sharply deteriorating situation around Iran, the Ukraine conflict, and the fate of Hungarian nationals captured while fighting for Kiev.
According to a Kremlin readout, the two leaders reviewed current issues in bilateral cooperation and the implementation of agreements reached during Orban’s visit to Moscow in November, which was focused on energy security and peace efforts.
Putin and Orban also discussed the “sharply deteriorated situation around Iran and throughout the Middle East region, including in terms of possible consequences for the state of the global energy market.”
The discussion comes as US-Israeli strikes on Iran have entered their fourth day, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and triggering Iranian retaliatory attacks on US bases across the Gulf, disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and spiking oil and gas prices.
On Ukraine, Putin noted Hungary’s “principled position in support of a political-diplomatic settlement of the conflict, as well as its overall desire to pursue a balanced and sovereign course in international affairs.”
Budapest has long been at odds with the EU over Hungary’s refusal to send weapons to Kiev and its opposition to sanctions on Moscow.
The leaders also addressed issues concerning Hungarian citizens mobilized into the Ukrainian armed forces who have been captured by Russia.
Hungary had previously raised concerns about ethnic Hungarians from Ukraine’s Transcarpathia region being conscripted and killed in the conflict.
Putin and Orban agreed to continue contacts at various levels, the Kremlin said.

Zelensky comments on next round of Russia-US-Ukraine talks

Moscow, Kiev, and Washington are expected to hold the next round of talks on the Ukraine conflict later this week, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has said, adding that the negotiations could begin as early as Friday and could be moved from the United Arab Emirates to Türkiye or Switzerland.
Russia and Ukraine have been engaged for months in a US-mediated process that is reported to be approaching the final phase.
At the last round of talks in Geneva in mid-February, Ukrainian delegation head Rustem Umerov said, political and military working groups “discussed security parameters and mechanisms for implementing possible solutions.”
Chief Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky described the talks as “difficult but businesslike.”
The sides are expected to work on proposals that could be submitted to the leaders of the three countries for consideration, according to Kiev. A date for the next round had not been set until now.
“The meeting was expected during the period between March 5 and 8,” and is now expected to be held March 5 or 6, Zelensky said on Monday.
It is unclear whether the talks will still be held in Abu Dhabi as previously planned, the Ukrainian leader said, citing the ongoing conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran.
The sides held two previous meetings in a similar format in Abu Dhabi in January, before the talks in Geneva in February.
Asked about how the US strikes on Iran could affect the negotiations and Moscow’s trust in Washington, the Kremlin said it is willing to continue the talks.
“It is in our interests to continue the negotiations,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Monday. Russia still “highly appreciates” America’s mediation efforts, he said, adding that Moscow is “analyzing the situation and drawing relevant conclusions.”
“We trust only ourselves,” Peskov added.
The US and Israel launched the bombing campaign just days after indirect talks between US and Iranian delegations on Tehran’s nuclear program.
Russia condemned what it called a “premeditated and unprovoked act of aggression.”

The status of atomic installations across the country is unclear amid the continuing US-Israeli attacks, Russia’s state nuclear corporation chief says
Moscow has lost contact with the leadership of Iran’s nuclear sector amid the US and Israeli attack on the country, Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, has said.
On Tuesday, Rosatom’s Director General Alexey Likhachev said the operations at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in southern Iran have been suspended due to airstrikes in its vicinity, with some 639 Russian personnel remaining at the facility. The company has been the key contractor at the plant, currently constructing its second and third power units.
While Rosatom continues to work with Iranian officials at the plant, the company has lost communications with the leadership of the country’s nuclear sector, and the status of other nuclear installations in the country remains unclear, Likhachev noted.
“The station is certainly under threat, as explosions are already being heard kilometers away from the station’s physical perimeter. They aren’t aimed at the station but at the military installations located there, but the threat is clearly growing,” Likhachev stated.
The situation at the power plant remains “under control,” Rosatom’s head added. On Saturday, Rosatom stated it had evacuated nearly 100 people from Iran, including nonessential staff and employees’ children. According to Likachev, the company plans to evacuate an additional 150-200 personnel from the facility “when the situation allows.”
The plant currently contains a large stockpile of fissive materials, including 70 tons of nuclear fuel and more than 210 tons of depleted fuel, Likhachev stated. Any hit on the stockpile is bound to result in a catastrophic incident of, at least, “regional” proportions, he warned.
Russia has played a key role in Iran’s civilian atomic program, notably at the Bushehr plant. The construction of the power plant was started in the mid 1970s by a West German company, but was suspended in the wake of the Islamic Revolution in 1980. The project was revived by Rosatom in the 1990s, with the Russian nuclear energy giant launching the plant’s first power unit in the early 2010s.

Satellite images show no technical grounds for halting Russian oil transit, the Hungarian prime minister has said
The Druzhba oil pipeline remains fully capable of transporting Russian crude, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said, urging Ukraine to immediately restore shipments.
The Soviet-era pipeline, part of which runs through Ukraine, went offline in January after Kiev claimed it had been damaged by Russian strikes – accusations Moscow denies. Hungary and Slovakia, both heavily reliant on Russian energy, have accused Kiev of deliberately cutting them off for political reasons and inventing obstacles for restarting oil flows.
In a video message on Facebook on Monday, Orban said Budapest had obtained new satellite intelligence confirming the pipeline remains functional. He spoke after an emergency Security Council meeting on the issue.
“Based on the satellite images and operational information available to us, it is clear that the Druzhba oil pipeline is operational… Therefore, there are no technical obstacles to restarting the line,”Orban said.
“We once again urge Zelensky to restart the pipeline and, in order to resolve the disputes, allow Hungarian and Slovak inspectors to inspect the site… Zelensky is engaging in plain extortion against Hungary. Hungary will not back down, and we will break the oil blockade.”
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said satellite images “clearly show”Zelensky is “lying,” saying that there is no technical reason to block the pipeline. He added that in light of the uncertainty in maritime oil transport following US-Israeli strikes on Iran, shutting a functioning land route amounts to an attack on Hungary.
Zelensky, who earlier blocked a joint Hungarian-Slovak delegation from accessing the site, mocked Orban as a “magician,” arguing that underground facilities cannot be assessed via satellite imagery. Orban later called the remarks “unacceptable” and said he would raise the issue with the European Commission, demanding it enforce Kiev’s transit obligations.

While the reasons behind these closures vary, many have cited similar issues, such as increased prices, as factors for the closures.
The exact closure lists for all pharmacy closures this year are not known.
CVS HEALTH
CVS Health has announced more than 270 pharmacy closures recently amid news of cost cuts.
The business closed all of these pharmacies last year, and 900 locations between 2022 and 2024.
At the time, the reasons were cited as “population shifts, consumer buying patterns, store and pharmacy density, pharmacy care access, and community health needs,” per what a spokesperson told Newsweek.
CVS Health has also fallen victim to state law in Tennessee that would prohibit a person or entity from owning or controlling a pharmacy and a pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) at the same time.
And CVS-owned pharmacies have also fallen on hard times, namely when Omnicare, LLC, a subsidiary of the pharmacy chain, filed for bankruptcy.
RITE AID
Rite Aid has lost hundreds of locations in recent months, too, as it slowly fell into bankruptcy.
The company announced the closures of 111 pharmacies last summer, which included 39 each in the states of California and New York.
Locations also closed in Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland.
Rite Aid has been forced to sell off large chunks of its footprint to its rivals, including CVS.
CVS has already purchased 64 stores in Idaho, Oregon and Washington, and the list of Rite Aid is nearing 500 overall.
WALGREENS
Walgreens‘ closures have been more isolated compared to the other two, but hundreds of jobs have still been lost.
Last month, Walgreens closed a distribution center, with 469 people in Illinois and another 159 in Texas losing their jobs.
It came after Sycamore Partners acquired the company for approximately $23.7 billion and split it into five pieces: Walgreens, Boots, Shields Health Solutions, and VillageMD.
In January, Walgreens closed a location in Columbia, South Carolina.
And in October, Trader Joe’s replaced a former Walgreens in Boston, Massachusetts’ West Roxbury neighborhood.

The Iranian supreme leader was killed on Saturday while he was “having breakfast,” US President Donald Trump has said
Israeli intelligence hacked nearly all of Tehran’s traffic cameras to prepare the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Financial Times has reported, citing sources.
The US and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday, killing Khamenei and other senior officials.
The cameras in the Iranian capital had been hacked for years, with feeds encrypted and transmitted to Israel, the outlet wrote on Monday.
One camera, installed on the street where Khamenei’s compound was located, provided an angle allowing analysts to track the vehicles and routines of security personnel. The data was reportedly processed to build what spies call a “pattern of life” of officials and their guards.
Israel also disrupted components of mobile phone towers near the compound to block potential warnings, according to the FT.
The attack on Iran had been planned for months but the operation was adjusted after US and Israeli intelligence confirmed that Khamenei and his senior officials would be meeting in his compound in Tehran on Saturday morning. The US reportedly had a human source in Tehran who provided confirmation.
Khamenei was having breakfast with senior aides at the time of the strike, US President Donald Trump told Fox News on Monday. They were “thinking they were safe because it was in broad daylight,” he added.
Trump framed the campaign, dubbed Operation Epic Fury, as necessary to dismantle Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Tehran has insisted the strikes were entirely unprovoked and has retaliated with missiles and drones targeting Israel and US bases across the Middle East.
According to the FT, over the years, “Israel has assassinated hundreds of people overseas, including militant leaders, nuclear scientists, chemical engineers – and many innocent bystanders.”
(I find this last paragraph ironic, that it seems like Russia is outraged about the same thing Israel does, they all do this around the world.)

Ukrainian forces have struck elements of air defense systems, military infrastructure and drone control points of the Russian army in temporarily occupied areas of the Luhansk, Donetsk regions and in Crimea.
According to Ukrinform, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported this on Facebook.
"As part of efforts to reduce the military-economic and air defense potential of the Russian aggressor, units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out a series of strikes on targets in temporarily occupied territories," the statement said.
As a result, a radar station belonging to an S-300 surface-to-air missile system was hit in the village of Tytarivka, occupied Luhansk region.
Strikes also targeted a Sopka-2 air target detection radar and a Kasta-2E2 radar in temporarily occupied Crimea.
In addition, Ukrainian forces struck the location of a repair unit belonging to a Russian motor rifle brigade in Zachatívka, occupied Donetsk region. Enemy drone control points were also hit near the towns of Rodynske and Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region.
Earlier reports said that Ukrainian forces struck 13 oil and gas facilities in the Russian Federation in January-February.

Europol supports takedown of cocaine trafficking network linked to Los Lobos cartel
Joint operation in Ecuador, Belgium, and the Netherlands results in significant seizures and arrests
Europol supported law enforcement authorities from Belgium, Ecuador, and the Netherlands in dismantling a large-scale international drug trafficking network linked to the Ecuadorian ‘Los Lobos’ cartel. The investigation, which started in January 2025, resulted in the arrest of 16 suspects - including a high-value target (HVT) - and the disruption of a complex money laundering and corruption scheme. Authorities cited four more suspects for questioning at a later stage. More than 100 police officers were involved in the action together with 40 representatives of the judicial authorities.
Leading up to this action day, around four tonnes of cocaine were seized by law enforcement on several occasions:
572 kilograms in Ecuador;
2.6 tonnes in February 2025 in Vlissingen, the Netherlands;
1.1 tonnes on 2 June 2025 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands;
3.165 tonnes in Belgium.
Overall, today’s action day led to the following results:
16 persons arrested;
4 cited for questioning;
26 house searches;
4 hand guns and 2 rifles seized;
USD 810 000 in cash seized;
several vehicles seized.
The investigation was led by Ecuador (Unidad Nacional de Investigación de Sustancias Químicas) and supported by Europol, Belgian and Dutch law enforcement authorities as well as the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (Guayaquil Resident Office, The Hague Country Office, and Bucharest Country Office).

Iranian media said members of the Assembly continued their deliberations using a different voting method and were meeting in what it described as a 'secure environment'
Earlier in the day, Israel said it targeted the building of the Assembly of Experts in the central-western city of Qom, the clerical body responsible under Iran’s constitution for choosing the next leader of the Islamic Republic following Khamenei’s killing.
Iranian media accounts disputed that version. Fars reported that no meeting took place at the building due to security concerns and that the site was empty.
“No meeting was held there,” the agency said, citing security fears and the need to protect the lives of representatives.
According to Fars, members of the Assembly continued their deliberations using a different voting method and were meeting in what it described as a secure environment. The report, quoting informed sources, said the final stages of selecting a new leader were underway and that an announcement could come within hours or days.
Ayatollah Ali Movahedi Kermani, a member of the Assembly of Experts, said earlier Tuesday that “the selection of the new leader will not be prolonged.”
Regarding whether Khamenei had indicated preferred successors, Fars cited sources as saying he had not named any candidates and had left the decision to the Assembly. Over the years, however, he had outlined leadership traits, including opposition to what Iran describes as U.S. arrogance, courage and integrity, justice, awareness of timing and managerial strength.

An employee of the U.S. State Department was fatally shot by a Virginia trooperfollowing a deadly stabbing on the Capital Beltway in Virginia Sunday afternoon.
In an update Tuesday, Virginia State Police said the women who were wounded didn’t know the knife-wielding man before the road-rage incident, which happened in the southbound lanes of Interstate 495.
Michele Adams, 39, of Fairfax, died from her wounds and another three women were taken to the hospital with serious injuries Sunday.
A dog who was stabbed to death belonged to the man armed with a knife, according to a news release from police
A state trooper said he shot and killed Jared Llamado, of McLean, in self-defense after the 32-year-old allegedly confronted him with a knife.
A State Department spokesperson confirmed to WTOP that Llamado worked as a foreign service officer.
“We are aware of the tragic incident that involved a Foreign Service Officer and occurred on Sunday, March 1, in Fairfax County, Virginia. We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy,” a spokesperson told WTOP in an email.
Llamado died at a hospital after being shot by the trooper, who wasn’t injured.
According to his LinkedIn, Llamado had been working at the State Department for about a year and half in a technology role.
The spokesperson directed questions about the incident to Virginia State Police, who are investigating the incident.
Police believe the stabbings happened after a vehicle crash on the Beltway at exit 52, near the Little River Turnpike.
Law enforcement has offered few details about the crash except to say that the women were not inside Llamado’s vehicle. The women who were wounded but survived include a 36-year-old, 37-year-old and 40-year-old.
The investigation shutdown the main lanes of the Capital Beltway Outer Loop, before Little River Turnpike, for hours Sunday.
Police said Llamado is the only suspect in the stabbings, which are not believed to be related to terrorism.

According to the source, regular deliberations are continuing in a secure environment, and the final stages of the process are underway.
Khamenei did not designate a successor, leaving the decision to the Assembly of Experts, the IRGC outlet said citing the unnamed source.

An explosion occurred early Tuesday in the waters between Malta and Libya involving a vessel allegedly part of Russia’s “shadow fleet”, Times of Malta reported on Tuesday.
The vessel involved was named as the LNG tanker Arctic Metagaz, and multiple explosions were reported before crew evacuation. The crew were rescued and transferred to another vessel, but there have been no confirmed distress signals.
Although not officially confirmed, sources told the Times of a possible drone attack, with the EOS Risk Group reporting a suspected drone strike.
The aforementioned “shadow fleet” has been under US and UK sanctions since 2024. It departed Murmansk on 24 February with a likely route toward Suez.
Automatic Identification System was switched off for approximately 300km, suggesting an evasion of monitoring.
In a statement, the Armed Forces of Malta said that earlier on Tuesday afternoon, its Rescue Coordination Centre “was informed of a distress situation outside its Search and Rescue area involving the merchant vessel MT ARCTIC METAGAZ while transiting the central Mediterranean.”
“Upon receipt of the alert, RCC Malta initiated verification procedures and efforts to establish the exact position of the vessel.
The vessel was located, and coordination actions were undertaken in line with international search and rescue obligations, including broadcasts to shipping and liaison with relevant international authorities,” the AFM said.
Survivors were subsequently located within the Libyan SRR in a lifeboat during the search effort. All crew were reported safely onboard the lifeboat, the army added.
The ship was reportedly carrying liquefied natural gas; however, sources told the Times that environmental damage to Malta is unlikely.
Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg said on social media that he was closely following the incident and that he had met both Prime Minister Robert Abela and Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri together with the PN’s Home Affairs Shadow Minister Darren Carabott.
He said that they had offered their assistance to the government and asked to be kept informed about what is happening.
“This particular moment requires us to rise above partisan politics and work together hand-in-hand,” Borg wrote.

Drone gang behind majority of London prison drops jailed

A gang that used drones to smuggle drugs and mobile phones into prisons have been sentenced to a combined 22 years imprisonment, following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police.
The group was so prolific officers believe they were responsible for the majority of drone drops in prisons across London in the time they were offending, bringing in contraband that fuels violence and puts the safety of staff and other prisoners at risk.
Officers from the Met’s specialist crime unit began investigating drone drops after receiving intelligence in December 2025.
They then worked closely alongside the Prison Service to build evidence and identify the gang responsible. Within three months they were arrested, charged and remanded.
The investigating team used tactics including surveillance outside prisons, analysis of phone data that showed the suspects in the vicinity of prisons and downloaded the flight data of drones that had been found in or around prisons.
Ultimately, this led to them identifying the seven-person team of drone pilots, co-pilots and taxi drivers as well as lookouts. They thought they were successfully evading the police by regularly changing drivers and operating in the middle of the night.
However, they were being closely monitored by specialist crime officers who identified over 50 drone drops in the three months they were monitoring them.
Officers decided to take action and intercept the gang after they established prohibited items were being smuggled into prisons using the drones, significantly increasing the threat posed.
The suspects were covertly pursued by officers and in the early hours of 26 February 2025, four men were arrested less than a mile from HMP Norwich. When searching their car officers found a knife, a drone and cannabis.
Detective Inspector John Cowell, who led the investigation, said:
“This highly organised gang thought they were outsmarting the police and prison authorities. What they didn’t know is they were subject to sustained specialist surveillance by Met officers, who identified those responsible and brought them to justice.
“We will continue to work closely with the Prison Service to tackle the gangs who bring violence and drugs to our prisons. Criminals should be under no illusion we will use every tool available to us to put them behind bars.”
Minister for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending Lord Timpson, said:
“We are closing in on the criminals who think they can exploit our prisons from the sky. Anyone trying to smuggle drugs, weapons or phones into jail using drones should be in no doubt — we will track you down, we will catch you, and you will face the full force of the law.
“I pay tribute to our diligent prison service staff and policing partners for their relentless work in smashing this operation and bringing those responsible to justice.”
The gang targeted prisons including Wormwood Scrubs, Brixton, Pentonville, Wandsworth, Norwich, Leicester, Onley and Bedford.
Packages smuggled in included class B drugs, mobile phones, chargers, and SIM cards.
