Russian Arctic LNG Tankers Keep Red Sea Route Despite Middle East Turmoil

Russia’s Arctic LNG shadow fleet appears to be operating largely undeterred by escalating conflict in the Middle East, with at least seven tankers recently transiting or currently en route through the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb strait en route to and from Asia, even as many global shipping operators reroute to avoid the region.

While traffic through the Red Sea corridor has thinned amid rising tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran, vessels lifting Russian liquefied natural gas from the Arctic have continued to use the shortcut to Asia, ship-tracking data over the weekend show.

The movements contrast with mounting uncertainty over Qatari exports, which must pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint that has seen slower traffic and heightened security concerns in recent days.

At least seven LNG carriers linked to Russia’s Arctic LNG trade have either recently passed through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb strait or are currently sailing toward the corridor en route to China, according to AIS data reviewed this week.

Southbound LNG carrier La Perouse has completed its transit of the Suez Canal and entered the Red Sea, while northbound Arctic Pioneer is approaching the canal after passing through the Red Sea.

Further south, Arctic Mulan and Iris are sailing east after clearing the Bab el-Mandeb strait. In the Indian Ocean, Nova Energy and Arctic Vostok remain on course for the Red Sea and Suez, while Arctic Metagaz is heading toward the canal from the Mediterranean.

Several global container lines and LNG carrier operators, by contrast, have opted to divert vessels around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa to reduce exposure to potential escalation.

Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project, led by Novatek, has faced sweeping Western sanctions since last year, forcing it to rely on a limited pool of ice-class Arc7 carriers and a growing network of conventional LNG carriers operating outside mainstream Western financing and insurance channels. After loading in the Arctic, cargoes are typically transshipped onto conventional tankers for onward delivery to Asia.

Access to the Red Sea corridor significantly shortens the voyage to China compared with a detour around southern Africa, reducing sailing times and tonne-miles. For Novatek, whose fleet of conventional LNG carriers is limited, avoiding the longer Cape route is critical to maintaining cargo rotation and freeing vessels for additional liftings.

Major energy and container shipping companies have cited security risks in the region as grounds for rerouting. The Cape of Good Hope diversion adds roughly 10 to 15 days to voyages between Europe and Asia, depending on speed and weather, increasing fuel costs and tightening vessel availability.

In contrast, Russian-linked LNG carriers have so far continued to transit the Red Sea, suggesting that the shadow fleet – often operating with non-Western insurers, opaque ownership structures and flags of convenience – may face fewer commercial constraints than mainstream operators bound by stricter risk assessments and compliance policies.

Currently, China’s Beihai LNG terminal remains the only confirmed buyer receiving cargoes from Arctic LNG 2. The terminal has not been sanctioned by either the United States or the European Union more than six months after accepting its first cargo from the project, potentially easing concerns among counterparties about immediate secondary sanctions exposure.

Any prolonged disruption to traffic through Hormuz could reshape buying patterns in Asia. Qatar is one of the world’s largest LNG exporters, and sustained delays or perceived risks to its shipments could prompt Asian buyers to seek alternative volumes, including discounted Russian cargoes.

For now, Russia’s Arctic LNG flows appear operationally intact despite broader turmoil. Whether that resilience translates into expanded market access in the months ahead remains to be seen.

Cruise Lines Navigate Gulf Conflict Amidst Continued Iranian Strikes

Given the centrality of the oil trade to the GCC states, tankers have rightfully received the most attention of any vessel class in the new conflict in the Gulf. But cruising is increasingly popular in the region, and at least half a dozen cruise ships are in the affected area - including some which may be staying longer than expected due to ongoing Iranian strikes.

One of these vessels is newly homeported in the region. The Saudi cruise ship Aroya Manara (ex name World Dream) is currently moored in Dubai, and independent operator Aroya is deferring plans for a round-trip cruise through the Strait of Hormuz to visit Muscat.

Many others are temporarily based in the UAE or Qatar. German firm TUI Cruises has two vessels berthed in the area - the Mein Schiff 4 in Abu Dhabi and the Mein Schiff 5 in Doha. Abu Dhabi was attacked by Iran in a missile strike over the weekend, and passengers aboard Mein Schiff 4 were able to see Iranian drones hit the water from on board the vessel. Mein Schiff 5 is scheduled to conduct a series of round-trip cruises in the Gulf, and was slated to depart Doha on Saturday.

TUI has temporarily suspended sailings for both vessels, but it is unclear when passengers or crew will be able to depart: with airspace restrictions in place, travel in or out of the GCC is currently difficult.

Shipping giant MSC's cruise division has one vessel currently moored at Doha, MSC Euribia. The ship has about 5,000 passengers on board from its previous voyage, but it will not be departing as planned for its next seven-night cruise in the Arabian Gulf. Instead, it will be staying in port "due to the current situation and the air space closure in the Middle East."

Privately-held Celestyal Cruises, based in Athens, operates two cruise ships; both are in the Gulf, west of Hormuz. The line said in a statement Sunday that the next departures for Celestyal Journey (departing Doha) and Celestyal Discovery (departing Dubai) have been canceled: both were due to sail on Monday, but the line intends to put passenger and crew safety first in light of current circumstances. Guests of the Journey have the option to stay aboard or to go ashore in Doha, but authorities in Dubai have instructed Celestyal Discovery not to disembark passengers for the time being. The UAE has suspended all flights to and from Dubai amidst ongoing Iranian missile and drone attacks, so passengers would have few options for onward travel.

Houthis vow to resume attacks following Iranian strikes

With the US and Israel attacking Iran on Saturday, Iranian allies, the Houthis from Yemen, have vowed to resume attacks on commercial shipping in and around the Red Sea, bringing to a close a four-month cessation of violence at sea.

Shipping organisation BIMCO suggested ships with business connections to US or Israeli interests are more likely to be targeted, but other ships may also be targeted deliberately or in error.

BIMCO advised that ships already in the area should seek refuge in territorial waters of neutral states in the area such as United Arab Emirates or Qatar, and some ships may also want to try to leave the area entirely.

BIMCO said it expects insurance rates to increase manyfold.

The US has established a maritime warning zone in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, North Arabian Sea, and the Strait of Hormuz to protect against inadvertent targeting of neutral shipping. Commercial shipping is advised to navigate with caution and avoid navigation within this zone, if possible.

I saw that too, it is coming online soon. Why not both? Think about Iran, launching drones from tunnels. They open the doors, pull out, fire, and then go back into bunkers. Descend drones could manage that better than an energy weapon with limited range, also without frying the electronics of friendlies. We have a huge advantage in air superiority, why not use it to our advantage. Without the energy requirements to launch a drone from the ground, we can make them dirt cheap if launched from a C130. They energy to maintain altitude and payload capacity would reduce requirements exponentially. With the right avionics, game controllers and players, you could loiter a huge area, and playout all waiting games due our air superiority.

Offshore infrastructure joins shipping on Iran’s expanding target list

Iran has reportedly hit an unnamed oil platform and a jackup rig located within the United Arab Emirates part of the Persian Gulf, increasing the number of targets in its offensive.

The attack on the platform came after Iran warned all countries in the region to stop supporting military operations by Western forces.

According to local media outlets, smoke could be seen coming from the facility. Emergency response teams are currently assessing the structural integrity and environmental impact of the hit.

This strike follows three confirmed strikes on merchant ships to date, resulting in one seafarer’s death and others injured, and many ports in the region were forced to suspend operations for periods of time over the weekend.

The Iranian forces also hit residential areas in Dubai, Bahrain, and a US naval facility at the Middle Eastern country’s Salman Port, which houses the US Navy’s Central Command and Fifth Fleet.

Also, I did a post about getting those 16 inch guns online from battleships, and having them shoot sand gathered from the ocean floor as cheap ammo. If they can shoot a shell the weight of a small Volkswagen, 26 miles, sand should not be a problem with the right ordinance to create a shield of protection from drones and could probably reach 50 miles out. Just a thought.

Trump wanted to get them back online because they are just rotting away and those old ships have hulls that are around 16 inches of pure steel if not more. If we lost an F15E in Kuwait, it has to be because it was doing drone operations and somehow friendly or not so friendly fire mistaked it as the enemy. An F15E should not be doing drone operations, in reality. I know they have air burst rockets designed for it, but it does not seem the proper tactic. It would have to fly slower and lower, making it more vulnerable, and it is not cost effective. We really should have something more like a smaller, lighter, fast, unmanned attack drone, something configured like the design of a fast osprey, that can shoot shotgun rounds. Something that can be up +12-24 hour shifts, and fast enough to intercept any propellered drone.

The osprey design would be perfect because it can hover to defend an area, then convert for faster travel. The F15E in 2020 cost is about $138 million dollars. You could probably make well over 100 osprey unmanned drones for every one F15E. With the ability to hover, you could protect a much larger area as opposed to the F15 monolithic solution.

Energy weapons can also have collateral damage too, in sensitive areas like cities, or other friendlies in the theater of operation just as a gun would. US Military:

I have come to a conclusion. Build this asap. Think about it. If you can build a smaller Osprey type of unmanned drone for about $1 million a pop that could engaged whether in flight, hovering, or stationary, would give our personnel in all divisions, the advantage that they need. To hold position, loiter, defend, and attack. Being unmanned, the nose could hold multiple types of directed weapon at various angles of attack without jeopardizing lives. I think 500 of those networked and deployed vs 5 F15Es would give us a dispersion factor that a single solutions could not match, Marines could use something like this too. 100 hold positions on the ground, as 100 hover, covering and discovering, as new stationary positions are acquired, and as the full flight use the speed to suppress. Many new types of orchestrations could be utilized. I think most loses now a days are coming from cheap one way drones. We need to use our fighter for air superiority and against hardened targets, which is what they were designed for. Once air superiority is achieved, this would be the best solution.

Ukraine seeks share of EU arms-industry boom

Ukraine will set up 10 export hubs across Europe to sell surplus military equipment produced by domestic firms.

The move could allow Ukrainian manufacturers to scale production and capture a share of the sky-high profits enjoyed by European arms makers, potentially creating a new source of revenue for Ukraine’s wartime economy.

According to president Volodymyr Zelensky’s remarks on Monday (9 February) at the Kyiv Aviation Institute, the centres will be located in northern Europe as well as the Baltic states.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, European weapons producers, such as Rheinmetall and Helsing, have enjoyed a surging high of profits and soaring valuations, fuelled by rearmament efforts across the continent, amid concerns that Russia could attack other countries.

Last week, Czech arms maker CSG completed the biggest initial public offering in defence-industry history, making its owner, Michal Strnad, the richest man in Central and Eastern Europe.

The European Union last year introduced the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program, designed to provide financial support to member states to accelerate defence readiness by enabling urgent and major investments. Ukraine can participate as a partner in joint procurement projects conducted by EU member states under SAFE.

Ukrainian officials and defence industry have actively pitched Ukrainian firms’ capacity in ammunition, FPV (first-person view) drones, drones with extended range, and missile systems as contributions to EU joint-procurement projects.

Countries set to receive funding include Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Spain, Croatia, Portugal, and Romania, with combined project values running into tens of billions of euros.

For example, Romania alone is slated to receive more than €16.6bn, while Belgium’s allocation tops €8.3bn.

A second group of eight national plans — including those from Poland, Italy, and Finland — has cleared a procedural hurdle in Brussels and is on track for formal approval by EU ministers on 17 February.

Zelensky’s shift on arms exports

This concern is one of the reasons Zelensky has been cautious about opening foreign markets to domestic companies. In October 2024, he ruled out such a move because of the risk that technology could reach the Russian Federation, but instructed then–defence minister Rustem Umerov to develop models for selling Ukrainian UAVs abroad, according to the news website Dengi.

In October 2024, Zelensky told Ukrainian TV that the exports would be possible only to Ukraine’s allies in the Ramstein group, which coordinates military support for Kyiv, Reuters reported.

In 2025, the president’s rhetoric began to shift. In June, he announced the first agreements with partners under the ‘Build with Ukraine’ programme, which involves exporting military technologies and opening production facilities abroad.

In September 2025, Zelensky continued to advance the initiative, announcing the possibility of controlled exports of surplus weapons to partners. In November, the commander-in-chief said that by the end of the year Ukraine would open two export offices, in Berlin and Copenhagen.

According to Umerov, now secretary of the national security and defence council, the first real contracts are expected in the second half of 2026, the Ukrainian website Dengi reported.

Additionally, Zelensky also announced on Monday that drone production in Germany will begin in mid-February.

“This is a fully operational production line. In the U.K., similar production lines are already running. These are all Ukrainian technologies,” he wrote on Telegram.
